Oh, thank you - those camera changes are pretty neat! Please pardon my ignorance, but how do I access the camera straight from the lock screen? Tried every combination of buttons possible...

I had similar issues with my Facetime awhile back

There are different password requirements lately, and if you had a weak password before it may be time to update it to be stronger across the board... that's how I fixed my problem sort of

Camera also seems to load up faster and is way more stable than it was in iOS4. At least so far. I'm amazed how quick from starting camera to the point that you can take the picture takes place.

Double tap home, even if the screen is off. No need to hit the power/lock button first.
 
Ok, here's a new one. I just looked down at my phone and up at the status bar, I see the GPS icon is displayed. I'm not sure what is forcing it to be on.
 
Could it be that the capacity in iTunes or on the iPhone is fucked up?
For "Other" it says over 10GB.

And I can't see my music on the iPhone (but in iTunes) which is over 10GB.

Edit: Now I can see it on the iPhone, too. Weird..

Got it working, only problem is that gmx is not pushing mails (gmx pro does, a paid service, wtf?!). So i set up gmail to get the mails from gmx, but since it only searches for them once every coulpe of minutes im going to have quite the delay on every mail... I hate myself for not switching to gmail years ago.

Instead of Gmail fetching, any idea if gmx in the settings allows you to define an address to forward e-mails to? That would be instant rather than waiting for Gmail to fetch.

So music, contacts, mail, calenders, reminders, bookmarks, notes, docs/data don't factor in the 5GB icloud storage? Does your photo stream factor in?

Also when I click iCloud Backup to turn on, it says: "Your iPhone will no longer backup to your computer automatically when you sync with itunes," but can I still manually back up my iPhone with itunes on my pc?
 
Okay, so for the first time ever, my phone just says "Searching..." and has no signal.

Could it be my network is actually down? Or is this a nasty effect of iOS 5? :o

Genuinely in 3 years of having an iPhone, I've never had this happen before, ever....

Edit: It took me six tries with my iPhone 4 to get the iOS upgrade to work. Even though I got the obscure Restore failed error message during the sixth time as well, the upgrade worked then. I was then sad to find out that the Reminders app icon has grey lines instead of words.
 
Hey, is anyone having problems with iMessage? I've been testing it with a few friends here and there, and receiving/sending seems to be spotty. Sometimes I won't receive texts from one guy, and then one guy won't receive texts from me, but then one conversation with another friend works scot-free.

Yes, I'm having problems, too!

I tried iMessage with my gf and it initially worked. But when I disabled WiFi and 3G on my phone, the iPhone of my gf still thought that I was connected to iMessage and didn't send a sms. When I connected to my WiFi again, I received it.

Shouldn't the iPhone recognize when someone leaves wireless?
 
This whole having two accounts thing with one being my iTunes purchases and the other being my MobileMe account has really fucked me up. I can't verify my me.com email address on my me.com account because it was attached to my old iTunes account (which I have changed to another email address which is a pain in the ASS). I did this so I could make my MobileMe (now iCloud) account actually have my me.com address as the verified email address but still after I have taken my me.com address off of the iTunes account it will not allow me to verify the me.com address on my iCloud account. Therefore since I can not verify my me.com email address on my me.com account I cannot use iMessage which is FUCKING RETARDED.

Apple needs to let us merge our iTunes and MobileMe accounts already for FUCK'S SAKE.

I lied about the iPOd Touch 4g thing going so well after iOS5 upgrade, while the upgrade itself was fine, it did weird stuff with my media after the restore... I was alway missing huge chunks of photos and I had to resynch over and over, now my photo app caused my whole device to freeze had to force quit and reboot several times

Not sure if it's just a problem cuz I am using Windows 7 64 bit with itunes

Well, I can't speak for why they don't have it allowed for the phone, but syncing, for me, is something essential that you should do even if you don't use your computer for contacts, unless you're syncing them over the air somehow.
By syncing, I have them all in another place if the iPhone backup is corrupted or unusable, PLUS I have a Time Machine backup. I couldn't lose them if I tried to, and that's not a bad thing in the slightest.
So really, it's just to have another place to pull the data from if everything shits the bed, so to speak. And the fact that people refuse to do it or think "a backup is enough"... yeah, if you have your phone. If it breaks, what then? Sucks to be you, shoulda synced with something that you could use to read the info elsewhere when you needed it.

But you get my point. I don't have sympathy for people having problems with their backups or losing data when you could literally have it backed up 3-4 times over by letting the phone do what it wants to do in the first place.

You can back up the entire device like on iTunes. I tried it with my iPad and 3.1 GB were instantly gone from iCloud. Maybe it's because of my comics, but really don't see why I need this in iCloud if I have a backup on my computer anyway.

Yeah, I had a similar problem. Thus far, everything is going relatively smoothly, but given that I now have three email addresses running things on this phone (Windows live for iTunes, MobileMe for Apple ID, Gmail for iMessage and FaceTime), I imagine this will end up in a huge clusterfuck.

The 30 second re-wind and fast forward options are still there for me.

You can also lock the image exposure (AE/AF Lock) to a point independent of the focus by tapping to focus and then holding your finger down for another second (then tap elsewhere to re-focus the picture).

You can choose what to backup, so you could in theory have your wife's phone to just backup to iTunes as normal if you want and use iCloud for yourself. I'm going to be doing some heavy experimenting on this myself once my 4S arrives.

Once you're on 5 it's OTA, but to get there (without buying a 4S) you need to connect up for the upgrade.

Ok what the fuck. I backed up my iPhone before the install. I synced. I got the update. Everything is goog except I can't get my contacts back! I restored, that didn't work. I tried to import from Sim Card. That didn't work. How the fuck do I get my contacts back?!

Oh believe me, I'm well versed in backing up data. I have a pretty elaborate storage and backup server that maintains all that and includes an automatic offsite backup in the event of the house being destroyed. So I'm well covered when it comes to my data. It's also the reason I don't bother with worrying about my contacts on the PC because I know that iTunes has backed it up, and then my server has backed it up, and then my server has sent it to an offsite storage. I just wish I could manage the groups from the phone =) At least I can configure it through iCloud.com.

As I said, that only covers you if the method that iTunes used to back up the data doesn't corrupt itself (which has happened... I worked for AppleCare during the launch of the original iPhone and now work at an AASP, I've heard it and seen it ALL). Then you're just as fucked as if you never had it. Actually extracting the contact data and parsing it out into a different database structure entirely IS important, which is essentially what syncing does.

Weather app pulls your location every 15 minutes if you have "Use Local Weather" enabled. Maybe that's it?

On the top of my head, likely culprits:

- Cover art
- App/Game temp data caches (new in iOS 5)
- App documents and videos (they're not counted among the regular "video" "game" sections.

It's most evident when photographing something that has a bright lightsource in the frame. Try locking the exposure on a lamp then moving the frame around to see the difference from not locking the exposure.
 
Wow, is backing up over WiFi as slow for you as it is for me? It says 45 minutes for me, but I only have 120 mb's of photos.

My setup also does versioning so even if at some point it gets corrupted, I can revert to an earlier version.

Once again... seen it all. iTunes backup, Time Machine backup performed since the beginning of time... CORRUPT FROM THE VERY FIRST BACKUP PERFORMED.

Do I need to explicitly state that iTunes' backup method is utter shit? I've been avoiding being so blatant, but it seems time to impart that knowledge to you.

iTunes backups are complete and utter shit. DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH YOUR DATA.

i just want to make my main MobileMe email address also the same address for people to contact me via iMessage and it won't let me fucking do it

Don't have an iPad here at work to check, but I'm pretty sure it's both. It's not a feature I've noticed missing ever since I started using Beta 1 back in June (use it semi-regularly).

I'm glad I only have one, and it's my main gmail address. Simple as pie. Not sure why everyone here has like 6.

The iPad's music app lost a crap-ton of functionality in ios 5 that the iPhone and iPod touch still retains. This TUAW article enumerates the missing or altered features. The comments section mentions more.

Unless I'm blind and the iPad's music app isn't missing all of those others, I'm going to stick behind my previous post stating that the 30-sec rewind and 2x buttons are MIA. Still miffed that the podcast section has been gutted.

I got one when the iTunes music store first started, and then when I first got an iPhone and set up MobileMe I was given a separate one for that without a choice of using my existing ID. So one ID has all my iTunes purchases like my apps, and the other ID has my email address, contacts and such.

This is very common actually.
