iOS 5 & iCloud |OT|

Yeah I've somehow ended up with my Apple ID being my Gmail address, and my @me.com address pointing to the same account. But I can't edit my Apple ID to change my primary address to my @me.com address since it tells me that it's already being used as an Apple ID. So for the time being I'm stuck with using a Gmail address (which I actually don't have access to any more). Weird stuff but thankfully they're working on it last I heard.

Damn from reading this thread GAF must be the grumpiest place I've been to on the internets though, lol.

QUESTION -- I've synced my phone and iPad multiple times since I updated to iOS 5 but on iTunes, next to Backup it says my last back-up to my computer was at 6:15 PM yesterday.

For example, I just synced this morning.

Is there a difference between between syncing and backing up?

So have things settled down or are people still hanging when they try to update? I have the GM of iOS 5 downloaded but I know it has to connect to Apple's servers to verify so I don't know if I should wait still or go ahead.

do you have the backups set to iCloud? if so, iTunes syncing will skip the backup procedure. you’d ned to check the iCloud backup settings on the iPhone and ipad to check the latest backup.

(for the time being, I’m sticking with local iTunes backups to save on iCloud storage space and because the local ones are after to create and will be faster to restore from.)

This. Just a note that you can check the iCloud backup status in iTunes itself as well (and even swap between backups there). :)

Fuck Apple. The iOS5 update didn't work, I got an error message when it tried to restore from the backup. Now itunes won't sync, or even recognize my iphone. Stuck with a fucking brick.

I have it set to "Backup to this Computer" on the Summary page, not iCloud.

Is there somewhere else I need to check?

I had a similar problem. I disconnected it from the USB and reconnected it. iTunes recongized it again and continued with the update without any further problems.

So to clarify, the default option in iMessage is to not show that you or the recipient has "read" a message and in fact that must be turned on manually, in the settings?

Also Liu Kang said the camera's led could be used to flash when you've got a notification, is this true?

These are the two things I'll miss when I upgrade from my Blackberry.

Ok I need help.

I Downloaded the new update, but when I went to restore only my desktop purchased apps were on my phone.

Anything that I have purchased using my actual IPhone App store was gone. I then plugged my iPhone back in and it did another backup...so when I went to restore the phone, the earliest back up was after I had lost all my apps...

So I figured that when I signed on to the app store I could go to "purchased" apps and download what I had previously purchased, but it's not showing up. I even went to an app/game I had already purchased and it will not give me the option to download for free.

What the fuck?

I only have one apple ID, but my computer shares two phones. I'm not sure why this is happening but I'm really pissed.

Any help?

Unfortunately for me, that didn't work. Nothing is recognizing my iphone. Restarting my computer didn't do anything either. My iphone is stuck on the progress meter screen.

Is there any way to sync my "iCloud contacts" with my "In my iPhone/Computer" contacts?
I synced my iPhone contacts to iCloud, then synced my Mac with iCloud so they're all now one and the same.

"Send Read Receipts" are off by default in the Messages settings.

"LED Flash for Alerts" can be enabled in Settings - General - Accessibility. It makes the Camera flash blink twice when receiving a notification.

Thanks a lot, the LED thing specifically is great, that's such a handy feature I always wondered why it wasn't in the iPhone, seems it was.

It's handy if you leave your phone upside down.

I found it strange that the 4S didn't come with an upgraded front-facing camera with flash for this very purpose.

How do I get rid of Newsstand?
Won't let me put it in a folder.
You can't put it in a folder because it is a folder. Until Apple gives us the option to hide or delete it, we're stuck with it (unless you jailbreak your phone and use an app to hide icons).

You now have this "swipe down"-option with weather, notifications etc. Can I put more stuff in there?

Edit: Btw. the option to have the camera already in the lock screen is pretty nice and fast!

Well that sucks.

Could be worse I guess.

Oh, so the flash is on the back, damn. Yes that doesn't seem to make much sense.

It's this sort of thing that irritates me, I'll likely buy the 4S, then the 5 will be announced with an LED flash on the front and I'll upgrade.

I figured it out! It was an apple ID issue after all . Didn't even know I had two separate one.

Now begins the long process of redownloading all my apps....

I use the same apple accout on my phone, iPad and on the mrs iPhone so we can share apps. We gona run into problems with imessenger.

So... and what about Windows? :X
I believe the iCloud control panel for Windows has the option to sync up with Outlook Contacts (maybe others).

It's linked in the OP of this thread.

How do I manually set the notifications arrangement?
By default it is set to manual, but for some reason even when I arrange it differently within the menu by dragging, it always changes around randomly once I save the option and check again.

You dont need that with home sharing you can share apps with itunes.

There's some nice features I like.

When you scroll up to read through your messages the keyboard moves down to see all the screen. Great improvement.

The weather app now displays hour by hour updates... nice though you can get better weather apps.

iMessages are quicker than txt, let you know when someones typing in the same convo and in blue... nothing major but cool none the less (though sometimes the messages struggle to send and it seems to really kill my battery imessenging?)

Is there a way to keep the camera icon on the lock screen without double tapping Home.? Seems a bit pointless if by the time I've done that I might as well just screen unlock > camera.

Notification bar is nice, as well as quickly being able to listen to music from lock screen.

Browser is really fast now which is great.

Camera has nice improvements, being able to zoom, take photo from the + key, edit pictures. Though again there's beter camera apps anyways.

These are the main differences and improvements for me. Don't care for iCloud, Newsstand or Reminders.

Has anyone found any hidden features/improvements not listed like the fold down keyboard in messages?

Try DFU mode.

I did this recently when my iPad got stuck, and it did the job.

In 35 pages of people (mostly) successfully installing and using iOS 5, am I really the only person here who's phone cuts out when 3G is enabled?

The 4-finger pinch-to-close is the best feature of iOS5 for iPad. The Home button is always in the wrong place. Worth the hassle of updating for this feature alone.

Wait, what? You could always do this, no? Or am I missing a certain feature?

Still hate that you can't even see the notification pull down thing from the lock screen, WHY NOT?! Awesome overall though.

iPad2 ONLY. Despite it working perfectly well on iPad 1 in beta, this is another artificial restriction to 'encourage' upgrades.

I agree though, that closing, and swiping between apps is great. I'll enjoy it on my iPad 3 ;)

Really? Ha, Well I've only had my phone 1
year
. Better late than never :P

Wait.. WHAT?! FUCK, so no multitouch gestures on iPad 1? Four finger up for the app shelf? No swiping to switch between active apps? Nothing at all? If true... fuck you Apple.

PS. Anyone have a list of not so obvious new features? Like keyboard shortcuts, led flash notifications, imbedded dictionary, etc.

I love the Notifications app. I've already used it several times to remind me to do shit I think of while I'm out and about, when I get home. GeoFences are amazing. I wish my phone could use Siri to make it even better :(

Thanks. But I figured another workaround to get my iphone un-bricked.

It was a hassle, but I finally got iOS5 running. Didn't even lose my contacts.
The fuck happened to my vertical swipe? Of all the things to take out.
