After 5 tries my 3gs is updated. Now waiting for 100 apps to get copied back to the phone.

Camera pics and videos were not deleted by the restore.

Also I couldn't activate icloud for a while because I had to verify my email. And it took a few minutes before it was sent to my inbox...

Everything looks good so far.

If you're up for making a FAQ that has more info than the two current links (not sure where you got six), then go for it Marty.

Sync your device to get what you have currently back on your PC.

Sorry five links. That last FAQ has barely any info in it. I wish I did have time to do one, but I currently don't. I'm just saying based off the beta thread and now here, it would seem like a good idea for someone to put together something. Maybe if I get more time I'll take a crack at it, but hopefully someone else will be able to pick up the task.

So just to confirm. I'm on the latest beta (not the GM), so do I have to manually download and restore? It's not coming up as an update in iTunes.

after 4 tries, finally got the phone updated. not even gonna try the ipad tonight...

and i just got an error when trying to get the lion update. well, wasted a whole evening on this rigamarole now :/

oh, and i still can't migrate my mobileme to icloud!

I am probably LTTP on this but Wifi Syncing only works if my iPod Touch is plugged in to a power outlet? WTF really? whats the point then, since it still has to be plugged into something.
Lame Apple :(

Other than the fact that Tobor is going to remind you that anyone who reads text on a computer screen instead of a glorious iPad is crazy, no one has ever really made a suggestion as to why they haven't released iBooks for the desktop.
Meus is the only guy on GAF I've ever seen ask about it, that should say something. :P

I think it's possible they'll do it eventually. If so, it's probably at the bottom of a list of priorities a mile long. Meus shouldn't hold his breath waiting for it, I like him and don't want to see him turn blue and die.

Oh, I totally understand the issue with the scale of the updates they're releasing. But wouldn't it be wiser to stagger these releases? That's what I thought they'd do since they released iTunes 10.5 yesterday. They have to know that dropping 5 or more major updates at once will cause a gigantic cluster-fuck.

Just a little foresight would go a long way.

Yeah, but then a different group of people would complain that others get it and they don't.

I think I'd prefer a queuing system. You request an update and it puts you in line. That way it downloads fast for each person instead of super slow for everyone, and you just end up waiting a bit for it to start.

I imagine their servers have some sort of queuing though. On this scale it basically has to.

The fuck? The first link is Apple's official page to get an overview of iCloud. The second is just a video, which I included since some people might not have time to read everything in the overview. The third is a link to the iCloud web apps, which I thought would be handy to include.

The last two are the help and FAQ which we're discussing. You're ridiculous. I include links because they're helpful.

Have you tried doing a manual wi-fi sync? Go to Preferences -> General -> iTunes Wi-fi Sync -> Sync Now. Let us know if that works without being plugged in. I'm at work or I would test it myself.

Oh, hey, something I've not seen in any of the documentation, but would love to know since it's the main thing stopping me going PC-Free - can you now update podcast subscriptions on the device without syncing? Delete the ones that have been heard and download new episodes if available? That's the only reason I even have iTunes on my PC at all anyway right now - I'd love to clear it out if I can.

Welcome to the party.

The last 5 or 6 pages of this thread are filled with nothing but bitter tears and broken dreams.
Really? I thought it was the updating part that people had trouble not the backing up.

I'm glad everyone else is having this problem, I thought I was the only one :(

You know, for people who post on a gaming message board, the lack of tech-saviness and inability to follow simple instructions and read warning dialogs here blows my mind. Everyone constntly bitches at Apple for dumbing down everything, yet apparently it's never enough. People constantly asking the same things over and over, easily answered on Apple's official site. Be mad at yourself, not apple. It's what it told you it was going to do. You can just restore from backup. Or redownload from iCloud. All your apps are there. No need to throw a fit.

Agreed. But I'm not going to lie, there have been PLENTY of times I go to just sync ONE new album to my iPhone 10 minutes before I leave to catch my train and everything just goes to hell with the sync. For no reason. LMAO. But that's why I love backups. No matter what happens the only thing that's lost is time. Not my data. Restore always works.

My point was that you're experiencing some sort of iOS 5 installation fuck up, just like the rest of us.

iPad2 backup took no more than 10min. WHY DOES THE IPHONE TAKE SO BLOODY LONG

A lot more iPhones are being used than iPads?

Look, you posted me five links for information on iCloud. I went to the FAQ one which doesn't have a lot of info. I went to the help one which still was missing info. I stopped there since I didn't want to trace through the other links to see if the info I was looking for was there. It may be, it may be not. But when I brought up a central source for info, you pasted me a bunch of links. My point was it would be nice to have one central FAQ that covered it all rather than trying to figure out which links have what info that might answer your question. If you only wanted to bring up the two links when responding to my post, why did you post the other three links which weren't relevent to the discussion of a FAQ?

Wow, I don't remember there being such an overload issue with previous releases. I guess I'm glad I'm at work and forced to wait, because otherwise I'm sure I'd have hammered on that update button like everyone else.

I wish that a few of these Newsstand apps would let you see a preview of the magazines etc that are on offer. I don't want to pay £2.50 for a magazine that'll look crappy on my iPhone.

Reading through the last few posts has got me scared. It took forever to download this thing. It better work.

Then a friend texted me and it cancelled my backup...... FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

I'm going to wait until sometime in January or February, sometime in the wee hours of the night to upgrade to Lion and iOS5.

I have iOS 5, my girl as iOS 5, but when I text her the bubble isn't the blue color, isn't the blue color supposed to signify the texting to another iOS 5 device?

I envy everyone who's having problems updating their phone. I'm having problems updating iTunes itself, and am yet to get to having trouble with updating the device.

I won't try it a third time this evening. I'm going to sleep now and will try it tomorrow..

I don't want to jinx it but I've been reading a book, cruising gaf, and kept trying for the last couple of hours and it's finally verified with apple. Let's see if it mucks up the restore part of the firmware... Fingers crossed.

successful update on first attempt from iOS 4.2.10 to iOS 5 Verizon iPhone 4! :)

just a question...

is there a way to get rid of the weather and stock icon on the home screen? being as though the weather and stock are now widgets in the notification center.

I don't know why I bother. I posted the five links when replying to you to illustrate to you that I had posted help/faq in the OP. I didn't post the five links to direct you to go to all five links. It was a quick copy/paste job.

The help and faq don't cover all the information, no, but they do a good job. I disagree with your opinion that the Macworld FAQ doesn't have much information.

Anyone having problems with photo stream in iPhoto? I've got everything set up, took a photo on my phone but it's not showing up on my Mac.

Yay, finally support for subtitles for Netflix on AppleTV. Also love the WSJ addition.

Photostream for AppleTV is ridiculously awesome. So easy for my parents to check out photos Ive just taken.

I did but it just took a while for the photo to appear. I expected it to be almost instant but it was there about an hour later. I took a photo on my phone and it appeared on my iPad afterwards. have you enabled it in the iCloud settings on your phone?

An error occurred while restoring this ipad... hmm....

Would you like to continued restore? er... I guess so.
restoring ipad music and videos.
