My friend who lives in chile just got a 4S and she insists that iMessages isn't free for her. I keep trying to explain what iMessages is to her but she still insist her carrier charges for it. Her carrier is Movistar. Anyone here from chile or anyone know anything about this or is she just being retarded?

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a To-Do List application?

My father received an iPad 2 for Christmas and is need of a good To-Do application. It doesn't need to be anything fancy. Simple and easy-to-use is preferable.

Any suggestions?

omnifocus is overkill but it's what I use because it has online sync with other clients and it's very powerful. desktop replacement class software.

another to try: todo looks like a paper PIM. cutesy but still a good app. i think it's 5 or 10 bucks.

things is popular but i think it's a bit pricey for the functionality it offers.

I don't know if any of the free or sub 5 dollar apps are good, though

Is Itunes Match an effective way of getting music back after a reformat? I want to format my hard drive and just get the service for the year, but I'd like to re-download my library back to my computer after I format.

Not sure if it has an option for that, or if it will only let me download songs I purchased off Itunes.

Being retarded unless she can't tell teh difference between when she's sending an SMS to someone and an iMessage. iMessage works the same as posting to a website, the carrier doesn't packet inspect to see which one of the myriad servers is receiving the message on the other end.

If you get Match and push all your songs up to the cloud (which takes a while if most of your collection doesn't match), you can actually go to a brand new machine and restore your entire library.

Absolutely I just did that a couple of weeks ago. Feels good man.

I'm hoping this is the right thread for this. I got an iPad 2 and I transferred some music there through iTunes (only because I have to because it's so damn bad), now the thing is I have loads of albums with various artists, so even turning off the "sort by artist" option in settings, in the music app the tracks are divided by artist in the album tab, instead of just showing the entire album once.

I tried everything, I googled like mad found various people complaining, few offered solutions, some claimed them to work but to me, nothing did.
The tags are correct and the album names are the same, I tried putting them all as a compilation, choosing the option to sort by album, everything... nothing works! In fact when I choose several tracks, go to info and choose these options and click OK, if I go back to the info, it's like nothing was saved!

I really don't know what to do and this is incredibly annoying, I'm loving the iPad as a whole, but iTunes and the Music App are really bringing the experience down.

Please help, I really don't want to have to individually delete artist info for thousands of songs because in 2012 Apple can't get these simple things working when they're supposed to have intuitive software.

EDIT: Oh and I'm using windows 7.

Did you try this:

choose all the tracks for one album, and select get info.

put in the “album artist” field as the main artist on the album. that should consolidate everything.

for stuff like soundtracks where there is no main artist, the checkbox in the get info/ options tab to sort as compilation should be saved.

if none of these things are working or get saved to files… make suer the files aren’t read only? try reinstalling iTunes?

in typical conditions, this is the stuff iTunes handles just fine. if making those selections isn’t working then there’s a very rare problem at hand.

I did that and it doesn't work, I just installed iTunes although I can install it again and I saw many people complaining about it on the web. It's like the options are all there, but nothing works.

there’s an option for the music app on the ipad 2 to sort by album artist. that should be checked on (just covering all our bases here)

but it really seems like this is more of an iTunes problem because you said metadata wasn’t being saved. that’s super weird and makes me think there’s some weird write privilege issues with the files and/or the iTunes database file. can you expand on that? like, if you select get info on a track and change the artist name or album name, does it actually change when you hit "OK”? If that’s not working then there’s nothing the ipad can do.

is it only some metadata fields in iTunes that don’t work or all of them? you said the sort as compilation tag didn’t stick but what about basic song name and album name tags? or ratings?

can you set the compilation flag on some other albums to see if it works there (even if it’s just a simple album with one artist)

check the read/write status of the iTunes database file and the songs within windows explorer (I assume the song files are all located within the iTunes media library subfolder and not on some external drive or scattered around your hard drive)

Wait... I need to have the songs on the iTunes library? Can't they just be from the hard drive, I just dragged them to the iPad from the hard drive. I mean, if it allows that option and says nothing about it why should I need to do that? If that's the problem, then easily solved if not, I'll carry on the troubleshoot (thank you so much), because I have a huge library and it would probably take a while on my dinosaur computer to add it to itunes.

I've tried the "sort by album artist" option on and off (although if it did what the name indicates, by simply turning it off it should solve my problem), but now it's on.

I got confused by options sticking (because I've been going around this for ages), but yes, the album information tag changes I make get saved, it's just the check boxes next to them that don't and I though that was what activated the options. Is it? Basically if I check the info for a song individually the compilation flag is checked, if I see the info for all the tracks, no flag in any tab is checked but Compilation still is set to "Yes".

Basically, from what I gather, it's sorting it by artist regardless of what I do with album artist.

EDIT: Either way, in the iTunes library I chose to add all the tracks from my folder and it seems to have added everything I have on the iPad to the library.

Maybe a dumb question, but is Find My Friends always an app that you have to download separately? I thought it was supposed to be a now-included feature, but then when I got my iPhone 4S last week, it wasn't on the phone.

well, it looks like we found your problem.

Yes, iTunes writes the tags and the songs need to be part of the iTunes library.

Now, before you go about recopying thousands of files from your current directory structure into new directory structure, here’s what iTunes can do:

go to iTunes options.

go to advanced tab

uncheck the two options to "keep iTunes media folder organized" and “copy files to media folder when adding to iTunes” (note that I prefer to keep these checked for my library but if you don’t want to have iTunes recopy the files wasting time and forcing you to delete the old copies, you need to turn these options off)

NOW, go back to iTunes and choose from the menu File > add to library. pick the folder that has all your music in it. (alternately, you can drag your music from a windows explorer window and drop it to the iTunes window)

wait a bit. iTunes is not making copies of the songs but it is creating an index database file based on the current location of your song files.

Now, within iTunes you should see proper album sorting already since you have tags with compilations and album artists already set. If some albums are divided that you want collected, use the two tags I mentioned before (album artist or the “part of compilation” checkbox)

once this is done, you can sync the files to the ipad or, if you choose to manually manage music for the ipad, you can drag the songs from the iTunes window to the ipad icon in the source list (left hand column) in iTunes.

good luck

Oooh! Man, I wish they made that clearer! I'm adding stuff to the library now so it'll take a while, I'll report back when it's done. Thanks a lot, you're a life saver!
EDIT: Yeah that works! It's pretty stupid that the exact same options are in there whether you have the stuff on your library or not, even though they don't work. Thanks a lot, I mean it!

Is there anyway at all to have saves that sync across my iPhone and iPad (iCloud?) whilst still having the default sync to go onto iTunes on my PC, rather than doing the full thing over iCloud?

Thanks

jesus... itunes match is a DOG

wish I could just go back to how I was pre-match; ideally I'd like a refund but know that's not going to happen

I hav 700 fucking photos on my iPhone that are from photo stream, it's taking up so much space on my phone, why isn't there a way to delete these stupid photos? 1/2 of which are messed up blurred shots and screen captures that I only needed at the time.

Don't you have backups? What did it do? I'm pretty close to getting it.

the main issue is that it just doesn't match what it clearly is supposed to match. Out of approximately 8000 songs it's matched 80% of my songs, and I have to say I'm one of the lucky ones that's achieved that high of a correct match rate. It's called iTunes Match, and it just doesn't match. Apple doesn't offer the option to try and re-match songs that have been incorrectly uploaded. Many of my Beatles albums were half matched half uploaded for example.

Another problem is with the iTunes Match being used on iOS devices, missing and screwed up artwork. I've also encountered DLing songs from the match service on my iPhone where the song simply doesn't work, like a corrupt version.

Overall the service is still really glitchy and is basically in beta

edit: here’s how to free up space on the iPhone

On your iOS device, you can remove photos from the Photo Stream view by turning off Photo Stream and then optionally turning it back on. You can do this at Settings > iCloud > Photo Stream.
If you added any Photo Stream photos to other albums or the Camera Roll on your iOS device, you can locate and delete these photos manually, if desired.

I just signed up for iTunes Match and left it running overnight. Unfortunately, it appears
To have only matched 11 out of ~12k tracks, and there seems to be some random tracks that didn't get matched in the cloud.

Is this the norm? Is there anything I should do to try to get it to match things?

11k or 11? lol. If 11, something is very wrong. If 11k, that's pretty normal. I've found converting a track to AIFF (as detailed http://www.macworld.com/article/163675/2011/11/how_to_fix_itunes_match_error_tracks.html) sometimes can get a track matched that should've been.

Of course. I ventured into the apple support forums and it appears that they just launched iTunes Match in 20 or so countries in the last day. I guess it's simply crippled at the moment.

What country are you in? It is also possible that the songs are too low of bit-rate. I don't think it can match 128VBR for instance.

Nope. Nothing that I have is below 190 and most is well above that. I ripped my albums and did almost all the id3 tagging myself, along with the album arts and all that jazz. I seriously think the system is just getting slammed at the moment.

In iTunes when you click on Store - Update iTunes Match do you get any errors or does it get stuck at any point?

That's probably the case. I feel like I read something today about there being issues with it after launching in 19 countries on Monday, can't remember where though.

a .00009% success rate, sorry to hear that. That's obviously as bad as it gets, but like I said the service is basically in beta and the simple option of re scanning uploaded tracks so that can be matched is not available which is a huge problem.

Suddenly I can't paste anything anywhere I've tried (ex: ebuddy, safari, gmail). Any help?

So, I had recently restored my iPod but I decided to do it again. For now restoring has fixed the problem of not being able to paste.

Edit: Fuck you iOS. ...and just like that it's back to not working. Going to the apple store sometime soon.

Edit 2: it works fine if I copy a word and paste it in the gmail and ebuddy apps but if try to paste URL in those apps there is no paste option. Both of which used to let me paste urls. Could this be a problem with said apps?

so i'm getting ready to do a complete wipe of my iphone 4 and not restore from backup because it's run like dogshit for months and i'm tired of it.

will i lose progress on my games my doing this? is it dependent on the game? do most gamecenter games have a cloud progress that will just synch up upon re-installing the game? i have 281/285 dream jobs in tiny tower, and i REALLY don't want to lose that. thanks!

Anybody have ATT and have problems receiving text messages? My friends yell at me for not responding to their messages, but I never got them. I'm wondering if this could be OS related.

Most games don't have iCloud support (yet at least). Tiny Tower does upload your save via Game Center though, so if you re-download it and sign in to Game Center you'll get prompted to download your save file and continue from there.

thanks for the info. is there no way to do other game saves that aren't cloud supported in this situation, short of jailbreaking?

My wife's been having these issues, but she finally updated her phone and the problem seems to have gone away.

Any one have problem with video on ios5 ?
As in even when the setting is set to start playing where left off, all my videos restart form the beginning when i pause and press done. Never happen before ios5 . Search on goggle and see a few with the same problem but not a solution so far .

EDIT

Itouch 3G BTW

So I finally decided to take the iTunes Match plunge. I've got lots of old tracks at 128kbs quality that I would love to upgrade to 256. So I figured it would be worth it at least for a year.

So, I've got my iTunes library updated now. But when I go to turn on this feature on my iPhone is says "the music on this device will now be replaced from the iCloud".

Why the hell is it saying this? I don't want all the music on my phone replaced. I just want to be able to download some track to it. I've got some tracks on my phone that are in lossless quality, so I don't want them replaced with a 256 file.

Am I missing something?

I don't think there's any way around it. You have to replace your music completely with the cloud.

Unless if I'm missing something too.

edit: actually, I think I may have read somewhere that it doesn't change the files. I didn't come across it as my phone had no music

edit 2: your music will be fine: http://www.macworld.com/article/163607/2011/11/toggle_between_itunes_match_and_local_syncing.html

It won't erase the tracks on your iPhone. At least it didn't erase them on my iPhone.
