IOS Gaming February 2015 | Under New Management

On level 19 of Dark Echo, almost two hours so far. I really like how the gameplay builds on the core mechanics of sound. For example, you learn that you can stomp to make louder sounds and reveal more of the environment. Then you learn that you can tap to walk slowly and sneak. Creatures can't hear you if you sneak past them. Then water is introduced. Water not only spreads sound farther but also slows you down. So now you're presented with a large pool of water with a creature between you and the exit. You can't outrun it. The only way past is to lure it down another passage with stomps, move away from the area where you stomped, then sneak past back to the water. So when you run through the water, you have enough of a head start that the creature can't catch you before reaching the exit.

There's also some weird stuff going on. A large Lovecraftian thing that appears sometimes. And someone else down here with you, sometimes you can see and hear his footsteps up ahead or in another passage.

So the sound thing - it's more about you making noise than relying on listening for direction, right?

I'm deaf in one ear so I can't play games like Papa Sangre (?) that require you to know what direction a sound is coming from.

From what I've read, sound is not essential to beat the game, but it is recommended to wear headphones for the optimal experience. It seems to be more of a visualization of sound through lines than anything. It'll probably be a bit more difficult to play without sound, but I don't know just how stereo-phonic the sound is in this game as compared to Papa Sangre...

Yeah, it's all about you making noise and the sound is visually represented on screen. It's not like Papa Sangre, this is very much a visual experience.

You could play it on mute, but you'd miss out on a lot of the atmosphere.

I was going to buy it on pc for 5 bucks, but now that the ios port has been announced rather play it on ios, wish EA could release theme hospital as well.

Try the original concept/prototype. It is linked from this thread, but I'll post it here:

That Super Bowl F2P ad thread is an interesting read, to say the least

What was the ad?

I think the only ad I've seen for a (paid) game on tv in the last year was Destiny. Some for the PS4/XBone launch, but they were more generic / console orientated.

Apart from that, regular ads for f2p games, in I guess prime time slots, your Clash of Clans, Candy Crush, Farmville, Boom Beach and the like...

There was a Clash of Clans one with Liam Neeson, one for Game of War, etc.
Here's the thread:

What is the best base defense / attack game anyway? Two of them got super bowl ads, that beach one is all over youtube ads, clash of clash is usually high up in the twitch charts and even PSN has Battle Islands. Am I missing out?

Huh, what game are you referring to?

Also Super Meat Boy, Braid, and Limbo would like to have a word with you

I'm speaking to all non-Metroid sidescrollers.

Those should have been Metroid games too.

Every sidescroller should be a Metroid game.

And if it refuses to be Metroid, then it will no longer exist.

One can never get sick of Metroid.

Off topic, but on the subject of Metroid-style games, Apotheon for PC/PS4 is freaking fantastic.

Back to iOS, you'll most definitely want to pick up Rex Rocket when it comes out. I've been beta testing it and with some tweaks before release, it should be an instabuy.

Still not Metroid.

Would pick it up if I could though, but alas, still no iPad.

I feel like there could be more Metroid-like games on iOS than there is now. Most are worried about virtual controls, but playing Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission on GBA4iOS works absolutely fine

What are the upgrades in Rex Rocket like? Do you find different weapons like the Ice Beam and Plasma Beam etc? Or do you have a dimpy laser that just gets stronger and stronger?

Awp, has the dev said anything about price or release date?

From the KS page and devlog
Guns, Guns, Guns!
- UP7A Standard Issue Blaster
- Tri-Bolt Laser Gun
- Rail-Gun
- Electro-5000
- Magnum Missile Launcher
- Auto-Laser
and more...

Grenades
- Remote Detonator
- Mini-Nova
- Sticky
- EMP
- Concussive
The teleporter is awesome too. Useful as both a tool for puzzles and platforming, and during combat and boss fights

And I'll take a precision platformer like SMB over Metroid any day.

Well, More_Badass covered the weapons question more than I even could playing it. As far as a release date or price, haven't heard any thing yet. But new versions are getting quicker and quicker so I'm betting sooner rather than later.

One problem with the quickness of the builds is that I never get as far into the game as I'd like because they wipe your progress. I joined the beta testing later in the process so that doesn't help.

Think I may skip the next version just to get further in as I'm also sure the vast majority of bugs early in the game have already been squashed.

What I have played has been a blast though and surprisingly challenging. Hoping the dev takes a few of my comments control wise into consideration but they work well overall with practice.

Still playing Dark Echo, almost to level 30. I like how the game continues to add onto its mechanic. You get stones that you can throw to distract enemies, and now there are pushing wall traps that you need to time your movement to get past

Just found out that Pixelbite has a new bundle of their games on the App Store. If you own some of their games already, it's worth checking out. I got the HD version of the original Reckless Racing as well as Reckless Racing 3 for free. If you have all of the RR games, there's a good possibility you can get Space Marshals free or steeply reduced in price.

Wish there was a way to see ALL bundles on the App Store. Only way I usually find them is just by chance if I searched for an app in the bundle. Searching for "bundle" doesn't work and returns a lot of crappy one app bundles of junky games.

Anyone know of a way to see all bundles?

I can't wait for Heroes and Castles 2 oh my, H&C is my favorite iOS game ever and the sequel is shaping up extremely impressively

Gunslugs 2 is really good, a definite big step up from the original, but it would be even better if it was Metroid

Sometimes you just want to play something focused and to-the-point, without having to deal with backtracking and upgrades and sprawling maps...

I have no shame in admitting that I downloaded and am actually enjoying Ramboat. Haven't played an arcade style runner in a while and this one's pretty damn good. And not too bad with the F2P model. Added bonus: it looks great.

And crap, I wish I could check out Midnight Star. Also getting the "no longer available" error.

Metroid is the greatest thing humans ever created or will ever create in the history of mankind. Okay, now back to IOS stuff

Started playing Nobody Said It Was Easy earlier and if you want to get your hard-as-nails retro platformer fix, I recommend checking this out

It's not auto-run, which I had expected after seeing some gameplay. You can only move in one direction and need to hit walls to reverse, but you can stop and decide when to move forward. This allows for level design that wouldn't be possible in games like Bitless and Run Roo Run.

The game really inpresses me with the variety of mechanics it introduces and how it smartly builds on its simple core gameplay. Oh, you thought simply dodging spikes and jumping gaps was tough? Now do that while controlling two people simulateously. Enemies to avoid, switching platforms, gravity swapping, and more. Controls are responsive and tight and the game is tough. You will die dozens of times.

Bloons TD 5 is free at the moment.

Have had it in my wishlist for long, and now that I've played it for a little while, I don't understand the praise.
Why are there so many different types of towers?
The upgrade paths are confusing to me.
The level progression too.

Honestly, I haven't been able to really enjoy a TD game since I played the first two Kingdom Rush games last year. Each one of them seems to have issues that KR games have long solved.

I once bought it as it’s always so high up on the ‘’top list’’ in the app store, but it’s probably the worst TD game I played on iOS…

You should try Cursed Treasure 2 or Sleep Attack TD.

Cursed Treasure 2 is on my wishlist.
Will get it once I clear some games in my backlog, or if it ever goes on sale.

Sleep Attack does look a bit weird. Is it worth it?

Sleep Attack is weird but it's a fresh take on TD games, it's good and hard!
Cursed Treasure 2 is more by the books but still a lot of fun.

Nobody said it was easy is really good, it's like Run Roo Run meets VVVVVV, and since VVVVVV was a Metroidvania, I give this game the Metroid seal of approval.
