Iesabel had an update that tweaks performance, gameplay and fixes texture bugs.

Which means the devs are pretty reliable and we can expect good things I guess. Game runs smoother, though it still chokes when using spells. Game looks stupid good on highest graphics setting and wouldn't mind let's say pinch to zoom to appreciate the detail every now and then. It was pretty cool in torchlight, I like details like that I guess.

About the PvsZ2 - the IAP looks like bullshit to me - and it's only the "plants" section that really annoys me - I dont care about the extra help, but that freezing plant was a classic from the original. Really uncool, people are going to rage over this.

So...I saw the update and bought Isabel.
I'm always glad to support indies and the price and no IAPs made it a no brainer.
It's cool, very nice looking and fun to play...but I concour it's like a beta in the current state.
Besides the horrible menus, the game is gorgeous but it lacks fluidity at least in iPad 3, no post processing, all zoomed in and minimized UI. The game is fun, pacing is nice and I already found some great looking loot, but I wonder how MUCH better the game could be with some updates.
And I meanit could be really epic, considering it has even multiplayer (which I haven't tried yet).

I hope John Sundell won't mind, but I'm really enjoying the polish and the 'simplicity' yet complexity of Sword&Arrows that I felt forced to alert Pocket Tactics for some media exposure.
Just had some turns and I think I'm already loving it.

Thanks-got it setup and downloaded PxZ2. I'm personally loving it so far-there are some tweaks in game play-and seeing a map, Mario World Style of the levels threw me for a loop.

In regards to IAP-I can explain some. There is a new feature in the game called "Plant Food"-you don't have to use this, but using this on one of your plants will make it do a Super Move-like the Peashooter will do a barrage of peas for about 3 seconds.

You can hold 3 containers of plant food at a time-and occasional glowing zombies will drop more when they are defeated. At least at this point in the game, the amount of plant food seems plentiful-I'm also willing to bet you don't even need it-but if you get yourself in a bind, and a tough zombie is coming your way down a lane with a weak defense, you can use this to save your plant. If you DON'T have plant food, you can pay with your coins (that you normally accumulate in battle, like the first game) to use more. It looks like in addition to earning more coins through normally playing the game-you can purchase more through IAP.

ADDITIONALLY-there are "upgrades" you can buy - and it looks like it's only with IAP-but they seem pretty cool-here are some screenshots I took. Also - it looks like you can pay to unlock some plants early-and I actually wonder if some of these are ONLY access via IAP, which would suck because it's some classics like the jalepeno and the Snowshooter.

I just downloaded this.

Interestingly, it downlaoded some 'content' on first boot, and then said it was applying a patch.

MAYBE it's just content, but if it really is a patch, it's interesting how they chose to go their own route outside teh appstore. Even more interesting that they did it around Apple's policies. Again, I'm guessing it's not REALLY a patch, just content.

The big boys have been doing it for quite some time. Glu was the first company I noticed applying their own patches. I'm sure such a practice would result in an account suspension for a smaller developer, though.

Yeah it is really annoying. At least PvZ2 doesn't stop you from playing until it is done. You can apply the patch when returning to the main menu.

I guess they need to be fixing those pesky f2p exploits.

The game itself is very...well it is plants vs zombies. It does look great.

I hate that shit. I prefer to choose when/if I want to update.

Beat Deus Ex: The Fall. Reviews will be running on IGN and elsewhere beginning towards the end of the day tomorrow. Can't say anything before then.

I'll say that most of the preview coverage you might have read stands up / remains accurate, though.

The original game launched at $20. Just buy the freezing plant...

I laughed.

But to be honest I don't see it as a big deal and I generally hate IAPs. If a game is free and you can see it all upfront? I really have no issue.

When is App Store Update returning, Justin?

Uh....can someone actually clarify how to spell this "lesabel" game? I've seen 3 different spellings here, and I've tried searching on App store/Google and none of the names provided here turns up any results.

What gives? What's the actual name of the game...?

It starts with a capital i . I too had trouble finding it at first, thought it was Lezabel as someone mistakenly wrote here :p

Beaten...but it is iesabel. For some reason I've been saying it as Jesabel. No idea how you are supposed to pronounce it?

I just wrote up my impressions on Kavinsky in the thread made on it earlier today but it will probably get buried so I'll post them again for you guys. Here's a direct link to my post - http://neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=69295636&postcount=33

And here is what I wrote:

I'm back with impressions...

Kavinsky is most definitely the WORST game I've played on ios and very well could be one of the worst games I've played in my entire life. It's a side-scrolling beat 'em up with some driving/AR sections thrown in for variety sake.

The combat in this game is absolutely terrible. You're only given a virtual joystick (which actually works well for movement) and two input options - one for punching and another for kicking. There is no way to block so prepare to get gang raped when trying to take on multiple generic enemies at once. The controls feel sluggish and imprecise; it's almost as if there's a bit of lag between pressing a button and seeing the action performed on-screen. Movement takes place in a 3D space on a 2D plane but it's hard to hit enemies, I blame it on the touch screen controls, this game would definitely benefit from physical buttons and directional inputs. The boss fights at the end of the brawling levels are a joke, enemies have no discernible attack patterns and just come at you swinging until you take them down. However, this isn't hard to do considering there's no real penalty for dying. Your basic strategy basically boils down to mashing the punch button (the kick is way too slow and doesn't work half the time), if you die just revive, rinse, and repeat.

Like I said earlier they try to mix things up by adding in AR brawl segments. Here the game asks you to stand over a surface (preferable a magazine or book cover) on top of which your hero (Kavinsky) will appear next to his red testarossa. It's just a lame gimmick though, you end up trying to protect the car from random thugs who are inexplicably out to destroy your expensive vehicle and murder you with their bare fists. This leaves me wondering what the heck I ever did to deserve this, you would think I took a shit on their dead relatives grave and then went on a baby shaking spree. That's just my interpretation though, the game gives you absolutely no details when it comes to story.

7b0e318384db7082b2e167db19a6d890.png

The final portion of Kavinsky involves a driving section. This is without a doubt the worst part of the whole damn game. Basically it's Outrun or Crazi Taxi style - you have a timer and have to clear checkpoints scattered throughout the track to extend the time limit with the goal being to reach the end of the level. Simple enough right? Fuck no, this part is insanely difficult due to the piss poor controls. By default the game forces you to use the gyroscope controls which are terribly imprecise. Thankfully there's an option to control the car using arrows but that's also broken, they don't work half of the time and the car jerks around the track unpredictably when they do. It's literally a crap-shoot getting through these sections.

Not everything is bad about the game though. The music is amazing, French electro-house musician Vincent Belorgey provides the soundtrack which is sublime. I really got a retro 80s feeling listening to it. The atmosphere is great too, it's very reminiscent of Hotline Miami or GTA Vice City, you know, that 80s Miami take-on-the-world vibe oozes from the game. The graphics are excellent too and hey, it's a free game! However, these positives aren't even close to enough to outweigh the negatives I listed above. Expect to spend about an hour going through the six levels currently available (it looks like more will be added over time) but just remember though that you will never get that hour of your life back...I'm not sure Kavinsky is worth it.

Here's a download link to the game for any brave souls willing to play it: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kavinsky/id633263643?mt=8

Here is a youtube trailer of some gameplay - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znU5cJaFANw

Yeah, async in this game seems to work well. Not sure about the balance yet though (of course it doesn't help that I make stupid moves on every turn).

Eh....I can't recall how many times I left a building BEFORE having captured it, wasting moves.
I'm still learning too...but I'm enjoying it a lot so far.
Seems pretty solid and polished, love the art used....tempted to sneak in my iPhone at work just to play today :)

Yesterday afternoon I thought to myself 'I should probably reinstall Grand Prix Story, I never really bothered with it after the first ten minutes'. Boy, was that a mistake. I haven't stopped playing it since.

The great thing about GP story is the replayability. Wait till you start with the better cars.

Sorry for the plug, but just wanted to mention that a game I've been working on together with some friends has finally been released for iPad and iPhone: Swords & Arrows
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/swords-arrows/id560917620?ls=1&mt=8

It's basically like a medieval take on Advance Wars, ie turn-based strategy. You have a bunch of different units that you can purchase and upgrade with new abilities, and it's multiplayer only for up to 6 players (online too, of course).
We've been polishing and testing it a lot these past months and it's awesome to finally be able to release it to the world! There's also a map editor included, so you can create and share your own maps, and the game has full Game Center support, achievements etc.

Also, the game is free, so I hope you try it out at least! :)

First let me say I'm really enjoying this game, you did a great work.
It's 'simple' but very polished, and the more I play the more I discover there is MUCH more under the hood (like different terrains/speed, research trees and such).
Love the look and music, etc...

I would like to point out something really minor that I personally find really annoying and that clashes with the general sleekness of the app.
The notification sound!!!!
I know it's pretty minor, but if you can, please use a custom sound (a sword slash, whatever)...it makes the general feel much more polished (to me at least).

Anyway, the game seems really solid...can't wait to put much more time in it.

From TouchArcade (via Macrumours)

http://toucharcade.com/2013/07/10/n...running-iphone-only-apps-on-non-retina-ipads/

Previously, if you were to run an iPhone-only app on an iPad in 2x mode the iPad would pixel double the non-Retina assets of the app, basically the assets that were designed for the iPhone screens that came before the iPhone 4 and its high resolution Retina Display. As anyone who has ever done this knows, the experience is subpar, and while it's nice that you are able to run iPhone-only apps on an iPad at all the pixel doubling made things look pretty blocky and fuzzy.

In iOS 7, however, Apple is doing something I'm surprised they didn't start doing a long time ago. They are having non-Retina iPads utilize the Retina assets of the iPhone-only app when running in 2x mode. Using the higher resolution iPhone assets provides a much cleaner and crisper experience on a non-Retina iPad.

:)

Edit:

Seems Rage of the Gladiator has been re-released as a F2P title. The original iOS release was in itself a Wii port, exhibiting Infinity Blade esque arena combat, was alright.

And concerning the notification sound, we'll look into changing it. :)

While you are at it...custom icon too :p (Like Carcassone, for example).

Swords and Arrows seems fun so far, I've been waiting for an Advance Wars type game to show up on ios for a while now! Good job Kiriku and company, I haven't run across any issues so far.

Yeah, we're actually four people! 1 programmer/designer (that's John), 2 artists and 1 guy doing sound and music (that's me).
And concerning the custom icon, unfortunately it seems like we can't change it right now. :/ But good news is, we're changing the notification sound and it will most probably be included with the next update.

Thanks, glad you like it! TBH we were a bit surprised ourselves by the lack of Advance Wars-like games on iOS, since we all love those types of games ourselves!

Not really an issue (I think), but I had a swordsman walk across water to reach his destination.

By the way, I'm really digging the music, congratulations.

You should post on TA too...there is thread where I left some impressions but it's easy to miss....I'm sure if a dev posts there too you can 'make some noise'....the game is really good and you will surely benefit from a larger player base playing.

If someone wants to play a game, my GC is Pitta (please specify from NeoGAF)....I can play at lunch/evenings European time pretty consistently.

Think you guys will like this: iOS 7 now allows purchasing of 50mb+ sized apps while not on WiFi for queued downloading. :)

No iPad 2 support for Deus EX: The Fall. That's weird considering it supports iPad Mini.

Oh well, guess it's time to upgrade.

Deus Ex: The Fall is out now - apparently everywhere:

Surely if it works on the iPad 3 and Mini, then the 2 should work also?

Woaaaah getting it now :O Feck, my backlog is only growing, but I want to play it as soon as I can.

Okay being pissy about the extra plants is not exactly cool either, but I wish the game did not have a freemium model still. Plants vs Zombies 2 is nice but the game seems to deploy Zombies before you even manage to get enough sun for your first attacking plant. The game has some really cool ideas but I'm not sure if I'm digging some design changes to accomodate the freemium model. So far it's okay though and it's too early for me to dismiss it.

Do you think Iesabel deserves it's place in OP? Even though it still feels bit rough on edges it's a very impressive game already and for me it's the best game of this type on iOS (not counting Bastion). And it doesn't have IAP. I think the devs deserve a bit of recognition for this.

Are there any IQ test kind of games on iOS you can recommend? Not like them crappy gameloft "Brain Challenges" that are so easy they almost seem like they are made to make you feel like you're smart but some proper stuff you can find on IQ tests?

I have the same feelings about PvZ2 at the moment, liking it enough to stick with it. It's in 'beta' as far as the F2P mechanics go now anyways, things can change for the better.

Iesabel has been in the OP since a few days now actually. :p

Next addition is probably Deus Ex and Swords & Arrows(?) - the latter really isn't my kind of game so let me know what you guys think (no pressure Kiriku :p, heja sveeeerige).

I think I'm over PvZ2. If you love it, there is a massive amount to sync your teeth into. If you don't? It is the same thing over and over again...

Unless you pay not to play it of course. Seems to me just stopping will achieve the same thing.

Well put together though and IAPs are not an issue. You just have to want to play it... A lot.

Oh I didn't check the OP, nice!

Deus Ex defo needs to be there, I played it for ten minutes or so and it's crazy how it looks, apart from cut-scenes the game looks like Deus Ex on my mac. Wow. The steering seems to be done well and gameplay seems fully featured (apart from body hiding). I have great hopes that this episode features at least one explorable city or something because in Human Revolution exploring Hong Kong while listening to old Aphex Twin was one of my favorite gaming moments this generation.

By the way, did anyone experience this? I was playing Real Racing 3, endurance, and the car in front of me literally disappeared right in front of me :O Like, it wasn't even a glitch because it just faded away rather than simply disappear. It happened just as I was going to take over it to earn extra time. Of course I didn't manage to catch next car and it all seemed like it was done on purpose - I find it really hard to get good result playing any race for the first time. This and the whole freemium bullshit made me delete the game - such a shame cause it otherwise it could be a much better title than RR2. Ugh.
