The screen on the new Nexus 7 is comparable to an iPad mini retina screen both in terms of color accuracy and pixel density.

For anyone on the fence between the mini and the Air in the US, Walmart is selling the Air for $475. Should be a pretty clear decision for most especially with the significant weight reduction in the air.

does walmart have any return policy for tablets opened?

I was going to get one but when I saw the price increase, I decided not to get one.

Does Walmart accept Apple Gift Cards for Apple products?

The Nexus 7 is $200 brand new on eBay. I'm so tempted to pick it up but the Mini man...the Mini.

Before the event I was set on the Mini. But after the price bump and the lack of a release date (and tight supply on top of that), I'm just going to get an Air on launch. Mini is still sweet, though.

Are comics harder to read on a smaller display like the mini?
The full size iPad was great for comics, but even that screen is not as big as a typical comic page. When it went Retina in the third gen, it meant that high-res comics could be appreciated in full-page view, and you simply had to hold the device closer to your face to see the detail of the art, or to read some particularly small text. Before Retina, a lot more zooming-in digitally was required to see the same amount of detail.

With the Retina Mini, the detail will all be there just like the full-size, and a full page high-res comic will look stunning, but it will be about half the size of a real page. So it would simply be a case of moving it even closer to your face, because the detail is all there, but at some point that might become uncomfortable. Do you really want a half-size comic? It might be better to view half-pages in landscape at a more realistic size.

Holy shit those are expensive lol. Wish I had use for a tablet though.

Once you own a good tablet you'll suddenly start finding good uses for it, that's how I felt.

bought a 3g iPad for gaming before I had an iPhone, use it 90% of the time for video streaming everywhere.

Hmm can't decide if I should get this or the iPad Air. My main concern is the screen size of the mini will be to small to enjoy comixology and the occasional movie

I found that the Mini was still great for comics (even with the non retina display). Movies… well, you might want the bigger screen if you’ll be watching a decent amount of them.

But comics are very nice and easily readable without zooming on the ipad mini screen. retina would just make it better.

Price is $50AUD more than I'd hoped, but even so, I'm mighty tempted to upgrade from iPad3 to this (though my partner isn't interested in the smaller size (lol), so she'll be getting the Air).

Looking forward to playing with one in a few days. Hopefully I won't have much trouble shifting the pair of 3's we have now.

Looks so nice...

I really want to be able to compare the Retina iPad Mini and the iPad Air side by side in store before I figure out which one I want.

Go to an Apple store or even a Best Buy. They'll have both units out and actually on to use (ie not dummy units) so you can compare things.

Only fail about going to the store to compare electronics is everything is tied down so it's hard to get an accurate feeling on weight.

The Nexus 7 is nice, but it's just not the same.

After using the Nexus 7 and the iPad mini (both 2012 models), Android tablets don't hold up. The experience is smoother on an iPad and the Apps makes all the difference. That's before you get to build quality, materials and overall niceness. iPads are in a different league of quality.

World of quality difference between last year's Nexus 7 and this year's.

Until Google makes it a point to invest time and money into developing a strong tablet app ecosystem for Android (they are taking tentative steps in this direction finally), they will always be a step behind. The blown up phone experience on 7" android tablets SUCKS and many top apps are still like this. Will it change over time? Sure, as more Android tablets in the 7" category are sold it get better no doubt...but it's changing very slowly. The 10" segment, forget it, Android tablets are dead in this market and a phone app stretched to 10" is unbelievably bad.

My only other major issue with Android 7" tablets is the 16:9 aspect ratio, I prefer 3:2. I wonder why there isn't many (any?) 3:2 Android tablets? Would it screw up the scaling of Apps?

Not really in the market for a small tablet right now, still happy with my nexus 7 (first model).

I really like the look of the new iPad Mini, but that pricepoint is really not justifiable. I mean, a 32Gb iPad Mini costs 479 euro, while a new 32Gb nexus 7 (2013 model) costs 255 euro.

I have this years N7. I still agree with the statements above. The N7 wasn’t as nice as the old iPad mini (app quality mostly lacking, smoothness of animations, build quality) and that was with the poorer screen and a 2 year old A5 in the mini.

With screens of equal quality and an A7, the iPad just pulls further ahead. But it’s gonna cost ya.

Agreed. The smoothness and ecosystem is worth the extra price. If you can't swing an extra $200, the Nexus is fine. But it'll be a sacrifice.

It's a good thing Apple leveled the playing field when it comes to smoothness with iOS7. =)

Any case recommendations? I'd go case-less but I need to take my Mini with me to classes and labs where it can be easily scratched/dinged.

I took a look today at both the iPad air and the iPad mini (non retina). For the price difference you are much better off with the air I think. The form factor doesn't bother me, I'm still using an iPad 1 and the Air is like a feather compared to it. Man that retina screen is gorgeous.
