So, serious question here: What has Jonathan Ive and his team been doing for the past year? Ok, so there was the iPad 2, but I'm sure that design was finalized in January at the latest. There's been absolutely no new form factors after that for any Apple product, whether it be Macs, iOS devices, or even accessories. Absolutely NOTHING has been touched in terms of external design.

I'm honestly curious how Apple's design team have been spending their time, day in and day out. Do they just come out with a boatload of concepts for fun and end up scrapping 100% of them? Have they been sitting on a beach? It's not like Apple has a massive product line, and the iPhone is their most important product. Seeing as how Apple is the richest company on the planet, R&D money wasn't the issue, and neither was time (16months+), nor capability. So, what, then?

What you see next year are projects that are being worked on now. Ive's could be working on the 2012 iPhone or new Mac Hardware. Some Rumors have swirled that Apple will do a major revamp on their Mac line.

I'll just download iOS 5 to my current 4, no one will be able to tell the difference.

Oh they will when they notice you aren't talking to your phone like the rest of us.

So.. some people here thinks that iPhone 5 will be called iPhone 6 next year.

hilarious.

I think Apple should do away with the numbering system and just go with "iPhone." As a new gen is released rename the older gen "iPhone Classic."

sorry if has been answered before, but if I buy the iPhone from Sprint, will I be able to use it on GSM worldwide out of the box?

Lol that feature is nice, but something I know I wouldn't use a lot.

Anyways, how exactly can they limit Siri to only the 4S, its not a iOS 5 feature like multitasking was to the iOS4?

iPhone was the 1st.

iPhone 3G was the 2nd

iPhone 3GS was the 3rd

iPhone 4 was the 4th.

iPhone 4S is the 5th.

iPhone (the next one) will be the 6th.

They may or may not want to call it that for marketing purposes... but "6" would follow the pattern if you're being consistent. I think they'll just call it whatever they want.

Should I just wait for the iPhone 5? I'm currently rocking my old ass HTC Diamond and am looking to upgrade. I've never had an iPhone ever... I have an iPad though. lol

No reason not to get the 4S if you want an iPhone.. Next gen iPhone won't be out until next year.

I'd expect to wait a year or more for the next iPhone.

While waiting might make sense... there's always "a new one in a year." Might as well jump on board at some point rather than constantly waiting for the new model. There's always a new model coming....

For what its worth, I have had other Verizon world phones and they provide the information to unlock them if you call and ask

Will be picking this up next week, only decision I need to make until then is who I'd sign with. My contract with ATT ended in August, and I wasn't too happy with them in the end.

Well now I know for sure I am not upgrading this year, I can invest in a new screen protector...this huge ass air bubble has been irritating me for months.

If Sprint sticks to the Unlimited Data Plan, that is a no brainer IMO.

Except AT&T has the faster 3G, so if you browse instead of stream and use a ton of data it might make more sense to go that direction.

This is true, but anything for a cheaper phone bill trumps speeds for me. I'm more than happy with A&TT with the 13 months I have been with them(I honestly don't see the hate), but a cell phone bill of 100 plus just to have a iPhone alone is kinda steep.

Screw that, they should just go with internal code names. Hey what iPhone do you have, oh this little ole thing is the iPhone N94A. Rolls right off the tongue see.

You want them to turn into Nokia?

They should take a cue from Android OEMs and use horrific names like iPhone Fortunate or iPhone Extravagant.

I there any logical reason for them not to allow current iPhone 4 users to use Siri other than to make the 4S more attractive?
I doubt it.

Supposedly Siri was doing a lot of cloud computing on it's side when it was an app, and it had to rely on the 3g connection to work out it's algorithm.

Now it's just integrated into the phone. "Supposedly" a Siri employee said something about Siri needing the new processor.

Could be BS. Probably BS.

I'm sure it's optimised for the 4S, but it wouldn't have been an impossible task to put on 4. It's not like Apple haven't released software clearly not designed for older devices before.

Actually, if Apple followed this last time frame again (about 16 months), then we may not get the next phone until February or March 2013.

If Siri is, in fact, CPU-bound, I'd imagine that retrofitting it to run on the A4 would result in a fucking horrific experience given the nature of what it does.

I'm pretty sure they moved the launch of the 4S so that they could release it right before christmas.

They'll call it the 6 because it'll be the first 6-core phone, have a 6-inch screen and 6 antennas.

If anyone knew anything about transcription and understanding speech, they'd know it's not BS.

What were people expecting out of an iPhone 5 that this doesn't have? Bigger screen?

Expecting? Yeah, bigger screen and 4G.

Hoping? Removable battery. My 3GS barely held a charge when I upgraded. I still use it as an ipod, be nice if I could easily replace the battery.

Apple and their damned control are infuriating sometimes.

edit: and custom home screens, widgets, etc. More of what Android does besides just notifications.

Really? I just don't see the excitement. Definitely won't steer me back to iphone from android.

If you're a hardcore Android user, I don't see what Apple could do to ever tempt you. They aren't going to get into a spec war, they aren't going to release a new phone every quarter and they aren't going to cut their margins to make the high-end cheaper.

iPhone 4: Yes, it could be very resource intensive. No one can know for sure.
iPad2: Hmm. It seems really suspicious that the iPad 2 doesn't get it given how likely it is that the 4s and the iPad 2 have similar specs. I can see a lot of use cases where Siri would make much more sense on the iPad rather than the iPhone (home automation for example).

What possible big upgrade would make your switch? Surely the most important thing will be software rather than hardware.

You mean apart from the A6 CPU, dual core GPU, massively improved camera, improved antenna, world phone and the speech recognition?

Were you just after a redesigned casing?

I kinda doubt their claim that it needs the extra power is the only reason. If so, why not include it in the iPad 2 after the iOS5 update? That has an A5 too.
