Facetime, multitasking on the phone, notifications on the phone (this is a BIG upgrade if you your phone frequently and don't like being interrupted for text messages or whatever), Siri, vastly improved photo and video recording, more capability for running high-process apps (games and such).

I don't know whether that makes it worth it for you.
In addition to all of that, the new phone is *MUCH* faster overall. Miles beyond a 3G and much quicker than an iPad 1. In addition, the high resolution screen really does improve the everyday usage experience. It's just more pleasant to use overall.

Because the world suddenly changed when the 4S came out that removes the advantage of physical buttons in gaming right?
That hardly supports the thesis that there are no good iOS games...

But people were telling him to leave his DS at home and only to game on the iPhone. One should be able to understand the need or want to bring a gaming device with physical buttons with them because touch interface can limit the types of games that work well on it and the type of games that you play.

I think the response was to what he actually said.

But that conversation follows the original basis of someone telling him to leave the DS at home. One should surely be able to understand that there are a number of games and genres that work better with physical buttons. So, I can easily see how someone is serious about it. An iPhone is not a perfect substitute for a DS, 3DS, PSP, Vita, etc....

I don't think anyone said it was.

Joking... right?

Nope. In the year I've owned my iPhone and the three years I've own an iPod touch, I've downloaded maybe two to three dozen games, but I've yet to be wowed by anything on the platform. Either it feels like a flash game (Angry Birds, Cut the Rope) and gets old quickly, or it's a game that plays terribly with touch screen buttons (Platformers, Racing Games).

If I want to play videogames on the go the iPhone is the worse possible way to do so.

Surely they were. Suggesting to leave the DS at home and to just game on the iPhone is suggesting that. Someone questioning him on laughing about that suggestion also in a way is saying it too.

I think they were suggesting ways to save space in his pockets... Out of all the functions that he needs on the go: Keys are necessary (to open locks, start cars), wallet is necessary (to pay for things, provide ID), phone is likely necessary (to stay in touch). The gaming device is obviously the least necessary of these, and the phone can double that function if you really need to save space.

This hardly seems a contentious statement.

Have you tried any Cave shooters, by chance? Those play beautifully on the iPhone (easier to play that the real thing, in fact).

Sure, and someone could suggest leaving the phone at home or the keys, but that doesn't work out either for him. Clearly he feels there's a need for a handheld game system that doesn't get filled by iPhone gaming, so why is it so hard to understand that someone would want to carry the device around and then try to act like he isn't serious when saying an iPhone doesn't cut it?

I don't think it's hard to understand at all. It's completely understandable, actually. What I struggle to understand is how anyone could view the suggestion to leave the gaming system at home as anything other than just practical, friendly advice.

Those of you posting screen caps of your phone screens, how are you uploading them from the phone?
Home + Sleep button simultaneously will take a screenshot and store it in your camera roll.

Tried the free versions of 'em. They suffer the same problem that Space Invaders Infinity Gene does - your fingers/thumbs inevitably end up covering up a portion of the screen (which isn't good for a bullet hell shooter) and you just don't have any real tactile response to what's happening on screen. (I.E. The controls feel "floaty")

When Space Invaders IG hit XBLA it felt like a whole new game just because of how well I could finally play the game.

So then why are we even questioning him by laughing off the idea if it's so easy to understand?

Did a few 3G data speed tests on my new Verizon 4S. The speedtest numbers are not brilliant, a little lower than what I was getting on my AT&T 4, but what I care about is real-world performance. Web browsing and data speed in apps seems perfectly good to me, snappier than usual in many places. It does seem a little slower with data-heavy jobs like downloading content and apps.

Who's laughing off his idea? AbsoluteZero laughed off the suggestion to leave the DS... that's the only laughing I see.

Let me rephrase that since it wasn't clear. Why are we questioning the fact that he laughed off the notion of leaving the DS at home? It's a perfectly reasonable concept of why he would laugh off the concept.

I was the one who said he should leave the DS at home and if you couldn't tell I was saying it tongue in cheek from the post, I'm sorry I didn't spell it out much more clearly. I suggested games on the iPhone, again tongue in cheek, as a replacement.

Now that said, I find it odd that someone is outright dismissing the iPhone as a gaming platform. I agree, there are plenty of games where physical buttons are better, and I never suggested otherwise, but there are also quite a few good games in the App Store that work really well with the touch interface.

I was asking if he was joking about the lack of games though, because there are some extremely well done games that can be super addicting and a lot of fun to play while on the go.

Starting to get worried about battery life. My total usage has only been 58 minutes since its last charge and I'm already below 50% battery :\

I heard that some people were having battery issues but I didn't realize it was this bad. I think you got a defective phone. Go take it to an Apple store to swap it out. There's no reason the battery should drain that fast.

Think the battery indicator may be messed up?

If I plug it in at, say, 48%, it'll jump to 65% in just a few seconds. Crazy random shit like that.

so do you guys always use HDR when taking pics? my impression is to use it, and then decide whether or not it looks better than the non HDR version

There are a lot of games on the app store and like any platform most of them are shitty. I've found several good ones, but I have always felt the iPhone games that are good are limited to specific types that work well with the touch screen and to me it's quite a limited gaming device compared to the type of gaming you can get on a traditional handheld. Most games that use the virtual d-pad and buttons have always felt terrible to me. I would never think it's a reasonable substitute which is why I still buy portable systems. Most of the stuff on the iPhone is like playing your typical flash web game compared to playing a console game. The gap is that big to me in most cases.

I haven't had any battery issues here. It definitely keeps a charge better than my Droid did.

I haven't charged to full since yesterday morning, but I'm still at 55% right now. I used Safari a good amount, streamed some videos, messed around with various apps, did some calls, played with Siri, and even played a bit of Infinity Blade and Aralon yesterday.

Nice.. just did a 3g speed test at my work.

4Mb down. Did several tests last week on my 3gs and averaged < ~1mb.

Had the same results at home.. one test I did from Northgate Mall had my girlfriends HSPA phone getting almost identical speeds to my 4S. So 2 out of 3 tests have shown HSPA working great for me in 2 main areas that I use my phone.

Great! And I'd say it is the same for me. I'm very selective about what I buy, but still have managed to find some really good games that I've put a lot of time in with on the iPhone/iPad. Of course, it comes down to what you enjoy playing, but for instance, I've had great fun with Order & Chaos Online and Aralon in the RPG arena. I'm currently enjoying Starport: Oriion for some 4X strategy play. That one even includes iCloud save storage so you can seamlessly jump back and fourth from your devices. Galaxy on Fire 2 is fantastic for space exploration, Scrabble is fun multiplayer, hell, even Infinity Blade gets pretty addictive at times.

My point is, dismissing the App store for games is just as silly as telling someone to not bring their DS along. (As I said, my original suggestion was meant to be tongue and cheek) There are a lot of really good games, although it can admittedly be tough to find them sometimes. And when stuff like GTA3 is coming to the device, you know there is plenty of gaming potential to be had.

Mine hit 42% after 2:30 of usage. Most of which was the iPod app while I was on the subway. I am convinced something is wrong. I think I am going to make an appointment at the apple store.

Yeah, I've noticed the battery issue too.

Also, IMO, I think the handset volume is low compared to my old Blackberry. I went to my local Sprint Store and asked them about this, and the rep said he felt the same thing with his handset. I'm going to try out a coworker's 4S tomorrow to see if it's indicative of ALL iPhones.

And finally, I tried using Free Nav today. And I have to say, it wasn't as good as Sprint's Telenav. It told me to exit the free way and then get back on. Like seriously. And it doesn't tell you what your next major milestone/action is far enough in advance.

My brother is getting tired of me complaining. He has a 4S, but I think he's used to it as he's coming from a 3G or 3GS.

Switching back to my Droid temporarily while I'm without my iPhone 4 and I wait for Best Buy to get my iPhone 4s....

Best Buy, you're really fucking me over right now.

So I'm with AT&T now. I have an iPhone 4 and it is locked to AT&T. Is iPhone 4s unlocked, so that I can use it internationally with different carriers? or do I need to buy the factory unlocked directly from Apple?

anybody?

If you want an unlocked iPhone 4S, buy it directly from Apple for $649. Any version that you buy from a carrier for $200 is going to be locked to that carrier. If you are traveling overseas, Verizon or Sprint might let you temporarily unlock your phone but you should talk to them about that before committing to a contract.

As long as you keep your finger along the bottom of the screen, it's not an issue. It's not like you need to hover your finger over the ship.

Look, I agree that dedicated handhelds are much better at gaming than a touchscreen phone, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the games iPhone brings to the table. The fact is, it's a lot more convenient to play games on my phone than with a dedicated device. There are a lot of places where I play iPhone games that wouldn't be suitable for using a gaming system.

At no point did I say that it's wrong to enjoy iPhone games, you're welcome to your own opinion on the matter.

It's just not for me.

If I want to upgrade to an iPhone 5 when announced am I best buying this unlocked from Apple or going on contract through a provider?

Fuck.

Damn dude, I remember you posting about that on Friday...sorry to hear it has been such a pain.
