while we're talking about uk mobile coverage, whats your opinion on t-mobile?
Without having been or either T-Mobile or Orange (and in the same area) it's not really possible to give an answer on that. Doesn't one network fail over to the other if there's no coverage? If that's the case I'm sure it's as good as the others - as always you're going to get better receptions from different carriers in different places.

I'm not sure if there's a website where you can search for that kind of thing. Would be great if you could search by carrier and postcode and see information that's specifically useful to you.

Hey,

got the 64gb iphone4s. I have an ipad2+1. Finding it hard to fill it out - not even bothering to set up emails on it as I have the ipad. so, what sort of apps should I fill it up with. Right now; outside of page 1+2 with some apps (foursquare/facebook+misc) - its mostly a bunch of games that I know I won't be playing on iphone.

RECOMMEND APPS. please :P

Incipio Feather case arrived today:

Beware of the incipio feather cases, while I don't believe iPhones will have an issue, my iPad 2 has light scratching on the back from imperfections in the case.. My advice is to feel for any bumps and scratch them out.

I'm back to naked.

Naked is really the way to go. Looks the best by far and also means the phone is as thin as can be. These phones are built tough and if you are reasonable you won't get any scratches.

Cases however do cause damage because grit and dirt gets in between the case and the side of the phone and scratches it. I've seen a couple of really badly scratched phones from using the bumper and other cases. Basically means they ruined the exterior of the phone when the whole point in their mind of the case was to prevent "damage".

So in conclusion, just go naked and try it out. Don't just use a case because you feel you need to.

My 4th iphone, never had a case, never had a problem. I don't know what the hell people are doing with their iphones that they feel the need for a case.

I think that the best options is to have a bumper because:

1. Holding iP4/4S is much more comfortable
2. You can put your phone on a table, and it won't get scratched, as surface of iPhone doesn't even touch it. It also works for pockets.
3. IMO iP4 looks sexy in a bumper.

I would leave it naked if not for the fact that over the course of two years, I have dropped my 3GS about five times and two of those occasions were on hard concrete. The case saved my phone.

Yes, that is a shame, but I do worry about dropping it. Mind you, in the year and a half I used the iPhone 4 I only dropped it two times on accident. However, without the bumper, I'm not confident it would have survived.

Furthermore, when placing the phones on a flat surface, the bumper raises the glass to prevent contact.

Normally this. I just wanted a case so I could put the phone on any surface without it being scratched. No biggie, naked looks the best by a mile.
Why would putting the iPhone on a "surface" scratch the glass? It's not exactly normal glass after all, and I assume you're not using sandpaper topped tables?

My bad, I misread. I don't think you can set it to not sleep when plugged in, you can obviously change the timeout on the lock, but that's not ideal.

Well, obviously once you've put it on a surface, the next logical step is to play iPhone paper football with it.

Are the Apple bumpers OK? Lots of reports of

- Scratching the antenna band
- Colour fading
- Dirt/Sand/Trouser junk going inside the bumper and scratching the case
- Going blue from putting in jeans pocket
- Not being able to dock it

I'm sure there are quite a few common "surfaces" that'll scuff it lightly. Am I wrong? I hope I'm wrong, that would be awesome.

In my experience every piece of electronic equipment, gadget, whatever has scratched.

As such, screen protectors went on every surface of the phone within the hour it came out of the box.

This is a problem with most cases unless they're designed to be easily removed.

Glass is incredibly durable and hard. It should be difficult to scratch provided you don't drop it.

The only things that scratched my 3GS were dropping it. Hell, I even put it face down on tables on a regular basis without problem.

It's nice to keep it pristine for as long as possible but things break/wear down/scratch. Covering a nice product up to preserve it from wear makes me feel like I'm renting it.

Just got my 4gs in the mail and I'm going to go caseless.

All stores are selling unlocked phones right now as the unsubsidized ATT phone when purchased as a device only is actually an unlocked phone. I have verified this myself.

That's great news, thanks!

Does AT&T unlock iPhones post-contract these days? (living in Japan, so I'm not sure of the answer)

I pre-ordered at Softbank on Sunday the 9th and they called me today, Monday the 17th, to let me know that my phone is in.

Oh my goodness this thing is f'ing amazing. My gf nearly collapsed when I told Siri, "Send my girlfriend a message saying 'I love you'"... Ahahahahaha!

Also, really love the white.

Screen protectors that are designed to prevent scratches are the biggest fucking scams ever.

I started with one on my 3GS and after a year or so, I took it off and now a year later, there isn't a single scratch I can see on the surface of it. As long as you're not deliberatig shoving it into a bag/places full of sharp objects like keys or whatever, it should be fine.

Obviously almost everything can scratch, but after two naked years the screen on my 3GS is completely devoid of any scratches or nicks. If you were to look at the rear you'd see a load of hairline scratches where the phone has been pretty roughly treated (within reason) and yet the screen is completely clean.

If you expect to treat the phone excessively roughly then I'm sure a case makes sense, but it's hard to recommend a case if your greatest fear is placing it on a surface. As has been said, reasonable care and attention (which most people treat these things with anyway, it's not like they're cheap/expendable) should be fine.

I'm actually getting a pouch because a friend here has one and it looks great, but the phone itself will be naked.

On the Mohs hardness scale glass is around a 6; this is harder than many common materials in our environment, including most steels, aluminum and of course wood products. Sand may scratch it, of course, but most other materials we use every day won't.

Just 4 million iPhone 4S sold in a single weekend huh? And that number doesn't include the discounted iPhone 4 or the free 3GS...

Apple is teh d000medz! That's what they get for releasing such an underwhelming phone.

;P

Quick question: is there a definitive answer to the whole "push versus fetch" debate when it comes to checking email and battery life? I did a quick search and there are differing opinions on which is more efficient. It doesn't make a huge difference to me as I rarely come close to killing my battery - just curious if anyone knows the answer. Thanks!

My battery life is still horrible. Down to 90% after 18 minutes of usage. Also, lots of reports on twitter now of really bad battery life. I wonder if I got a bum phone.

What are you doing on your phone? Max brightness intense gaming or just browsing the internet or what?

Almost regardless that seems overly quick to me, but curious.

Ah, but therein lies the problem, I'll often shove my iPhone into the same pocket my car keys are in without realizing it.

I am a naked proponent and a case never touched my 3GS in 2 years I heavy use. The back was worn to shit as well as the bezel but the screen was fine. However, my camera lens was scratched to living hell making my pics terrible. I place my phone back down on a surface or in my pocket (never with other items) screen against leg. The 4S lens seems just as prone to take abuse. Lastly, 4/4S is one of the least ergonomic handheld devices I have ever owned. The Incipio feather is the perfect compromise. Love the mate red case with my white phone. Just clean your case and phone from time to time to avoid abrasion. Also don't put our phone in a crummy bag or poker. Front left pants pocket is exclusive to phones for me.

Keys/wallet in left pocket, phone in right pocket. Always!

I was always under the impression that Push was always a bigger battery hog. I've got my phone set to fetch every hour and I do it manually if I need it more regularly than that. Battery life is pretty solid this way for me.

Typically my 3DS is in my left pocket, keys in my right pocket, wallet in right rear.

That leaves the left rear, but I'm afraid I'll put the phone back there one day and forget its there and crack the screen by sitting on it.

Throw the keys in there with the 3DS, all the important crap is covered up anyways, right? Scratch it to hell!
