Sure the initial upload took a while but now adding an album or single takes no time.
Eh, depends on your upload speed. I average about 250KB/s uploading to Google Music. Takes about 10 minutes to upload a 150MB album and then I have to stream or download it again when I use it on a device.

So is backing up your phone but iCloud is all the rage now.
Ok. That's why there are options.

Thought we were talking about syncing your music locally to your phone with wifi?
I guess I misinterpreted "Google Music uses data." Because I thought we were talking about WiFi too.

I guess it is true that iTunes can just shoot the music directly through WiFi without going through the internet. Forgot about that detail, was only thinking about the iCloud part of things.

I feel like a damn luddite for not using iCloud backup. I’m sticking with iTunes backups for the foreseeable future. it still backs up over wifi so all I need to do is charge anywhere and it’ll back up. it’s a faster operation and saves me in storage space.

… but it’s not the new hotness.

So if I wanted the 4S to be my first smartphone and I'm buying it off contract for 600 euro.
You guys think its worth it or do you think that next year iphone 5 will be so much better than its worth the wait on other year with my nokia (with just works fine but its just a dumb phone).

Siri is fantastic. I never thought I'd use her this much. She was offline for a few hours yesterday, and my 4S felt totally gimped. I never thought I'd use the dictation as much as I do, but now I miss it a great deal when I use my iPad.

It's interesting. The 4S felt much more functional and much less "magical" than any of my previous Apple toys, but it's slowly taking over more and more tasks that I previously delegated to other devices. Just like the iPad before it, I can't imagine going back to my pre-4S life. Less than a week and it already feels indispensable. It's a weird truth that I try not to examine too closely.

But when the iphone 5 is about to be released you'll be so close to the release of 5S that you should probably just wait for 6.

You'd have to be crazy not to get one if you're ready for an upgrade. The 4S just released, so you're never further away from a new product cycle. If it had been out for six months I'd say wait, but you're even buying off contract so you'll have no problem reselling if you want to upgrade next year. I don't see what you have to lose.

I say this as someone who could have bought an iPhone 4 six months into the cycle, but chose to wait. I though I was waiting six months, but ended up having to wait a year for the damn upgrade. If I'd known at the time, I'd have bought the 4.

Thanks for the advise, I did not think about the resell part yet.
I'm not very used to selling my stuff, I mostly use it until it no long works or keep it for when a new item breaks unexpectedly and I have a backup.

I have mixed feelings about Siri so far. When it works it's amazing and super useful and, yes, magical. But when it doesn't work, which has happened to me several times on basic recognition tasks, it can be very frustrating. But I think it's reasonable to assume that it's only going to get better. Having Siri read me my texts and replying via dictation in the car is pretty rad.

Yes, same here.

"What time is my appointment on Friday?"

"I couldn't find any appointments about "driving" on Friday."

Try saying it a different way. Same result. RAGE!

And no matter what I did, Siri would not give me directions to an address in a neighboring city. It's like the city didn't exist. I even tried telling her the zip code instead of the city name and she couldn't do it. So I just opened Maps and did it myself in half the time.

EDIT: I thought maybe it was my accent but French Siri couldn't do it either.

How does Siri compare to Dragon Dictate?
Been toying around with Dictate on my 3GS to see whether my swedish accent would fuck everything up completely.
Which it actually doesn't as long as I talk slower than usual (apparently I speak too fast, even in my native language?).

I'm 99% positive Apple is using a variation of Dragon Dictate.

Tried the UK Siri at all? I'm born and raised in the US, but I find that the UK Siri understands me better.

Nope, 4S not out over here until the 28th :(
Just trying to see if the speech-to-text apps can handle my accent.

Using Dragon Dictate I can't get the swedish version to understand even half of what I say. Why they even bother localizing the app here is beyond me.

US version seems to get it right 80 - 90% of the time, so it's not too bad.

Are you trying to get directions to a US city or an international one?
Cuz I don't think Siri can handle international just yet. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I dunno how you guys manage with the 2GB data cap. I've already used 1GB in a week and I have wifi on at home lol. Never used data on my old phone this much.

I wonder if Sprint will be able to maintain the unlimited plan :o

What were you doing that it used that much? Were you streaming stuff? I'm worried the 2gb limit wont be enough but I'd really hate to pay $50 for the 5gb plan.

What are you doing to go through that much data? Streaming videos/audio all the time?

I actually have the 250MB plan and I've never gone over once. I have my phone checking multiple e-mai addresses, use Internet regularly, use maps a ton, check movie times, and look up all kinds of information, and yet 250 has been fine for me for a long time.

I do have access to WiFi a good chunk of the time, and I don't do any major streaming of media while on the go.

What in the world are you doing to use up that much in a week.

Hmm..

- Streaming podcasts live cos of the shitty podcast management on iphone lol. I also listened to some shows on iheartradio for a few hours. Will stop this since there are podcast alternatives

- Watching youtube videos

- Downloading apps

- A lot of browsing cos I hurt my hand the other day and typing on a keyboard is killing me lol

- I text a lot and I did send some videos and pics over imessage when I wasn't home

That's about it. I only have siri, maps and weather using location services. 2GB just seems like it wouldn't be enough for me w/o MAJOR adjustments lol

I am paying $50 for unlimited with Sprint SERO :D

Sprint, lol. Just lost my 3G signal and am on some o symbol. Right in my apartment in a well covered area. What does o mean?

EDIT: Hmm. Google says GPRS. So terrible.

Instacast is your friend.

http://vemedio.com/products/instacast

2 bucks, but the best I've ever spent.

Yeah I am setting that up now. Looking at my previous bills, I was at about 200MB-400MB a month on my old phone and that was just browsing and texting

edit: What about Downcaster and Podcaster 4? Any opinions?

Never used those. Instacast was getting so many recs, I couldn't ignore it. Can't go back to syncing over iTunes. :yuck

It's only 2 buck, cloudy. Not exactly pricey.

Texting shouldn't be taking any data. iMessage will of course.

I think I might take my phone in, the thing heats up so much that I'm pretty sure its killing the battery and all of its internals.

Yeah but I don't like paying for apps and I want to get the best if I'm gonna pay lol /cheap

Wow, I really hates itunes. I spent like 3 hours the other day getting like 300 songs on my phone from CDs and manually doing the artwork. Well I sync my phone just now and it's all gone (Cos I'd unchecked manually manage music while trying to solve the artwork issues!)

I'd deleted the songs from the computer as well since I don't need them taking up space. WTFISTHISSHIT!

This has probably been brought up before, but what's the point of a lock screen when anyone could just pick up my phone and use Siri to send texts?

you deleted the songs in iTunes, then you synced the phone to iTunes. then the songs on the iPhone are gone.

that’s what happens.

you had to leave the “manually manage music” option checked and then drag whatever updated files from the iTunes window to the phone in the iTunes source list.

and unless you really, REALLY need the space, just keep your songs in iTunes. especially if you just spent time adding artwork and metadata to them! iTunes is the home base.

What's the point of settings when I can just bitch on the Internet?

Yeah I've thought about this too, even on my 3GS. The lock screen is so buttons can't get pushed on the screen, but the iPhone only responds to finger touches anyway...lol

You can disable Siri when the phone's locked in the settings

I know to do that but I was battling with the artwork issues and had unchecked that to see if it'd fix it for some songs. I finally gave up and did them manually but forgot to check the box again.

Yeah, I'll leave the songs in itunes this time. Helps with the artwork anyways since apparently the only way to keep your artwork on the device w/o doing it manually is to leave the songs in itunes. So ridiculous...

I'm expecting an update any day now which enables Siri to ask for the passcode before performing any actions. I'm honestly surprised Apple didn't include that from the get-go. Edit: not sure how wise it is saying a pass code out loud though lol

A better option would be to default it to Siri off when the phone is locked since people don't feel like just changing the setting lol

Anyone else having Sprint's 3G just flat out dying on them? I've been on "o" for at least an hour today so far, and that's just the times I've been looking at my phone.
