It's cool to turn it off at night right? (iphone)

Sure. But why? I keep mine on the whole time, but turn the ringer off at night. The alarm still works, but no text or phone sounds come through.

Also, finally got home and tested the headphones. Yes, I can have them paired with my iPad, iPhone, and iMac and it remembers. Awesome.

I put it on plane mode. Drains no battery as long as it's on standby (1% at worst) and you don't have to turn it on, which does use up a bit of battery.

Nice thanks for that info, so does that flashlight app kill the led? Is there a Gaf App?

This has probably been answered a million times, but what is the "other" that comes up on iTunes? It seems to be taking up more space every time I sync.

Five days... c'mon.

My 3GS has the plague. Pieces are just falling off now. I went to snap a picture of a new desk and realized that my volume buttons are just gone.

Got my 4S today. First smartphone....shit, first phone ever really. Question time: So the Sprint lady set up my iphone with a new apple id that she had created for me, thing is I already have one. Is this going to be a problem in the future? I have already changed most of the settings like the store and imessage to use my actual id but just wondering if the initial set up with a different id will be a problem.

I feel your pain, brother. The silver bezel is literally coming UP off of mine. If I want to replace the screen at any time, I probably could just pop it off, take the damn screen off, and pop it back on. Sigh.

Finally posting from my 4S!!!!! (long story short I got my 4S delivered on the 14th but it's taken me two weeks to finally activate it.)

I'll probably have many questions as I dig deeper into this new found glory called the 4S but for the time being I'll ask these questions:

Have you ever seen anyone put the white Apple stickers that come in their iPhone boxes ON the back of their iPhones?

Has anyone here put these stickers to use on any object that they own?

That is all for now.

Getting my white 4S next week.
Gonna sell off my 3GS since it's already on iOS5, so no untethered jailbreak in the foreseeable future. It's also in damn good condition (no scratches on the back or front), so I should get reasonable monies for it.

Are the Apple bumpers as good as the price suggests, as in they won't discolor or stretch over time?

Also looking for a good ear hook in-ear headset like these:

Only found two models, but there's gotta be more.

Okay, these just showed up today, and I have a total idiot noob question.

I paired these with my iMac. Can I pair them with my iPad and iPhone as well without having to do the pairing connection thing each time? Will the headphones keep the devices it is paired with in memory?

Not at home to test it, but just curious.
No, I don't think you can. If you want that feature then next time make sure the headphones under consideration has 'multipoint' listed under the specs.

p.s. FYI, I've found Bluetooth to be problematic when used with a Mac/computer. It's usually adequate enough for music but the audio from videos end up out of sync.

A bumper cost Apple like ¢10.

In four years I have never once turned off my phone. Why would you?
To save battery life while I am sleeping, the airplane mode someone kindly suggested worked like a charm though. :)

Is anyone else having problems downloading photos in the mail app since the iOS5 update? Whenever I have more than three picture or even one video attachment, when I touch the file to download it, it will appear to download, but when it's complete, nothing happens. I've had the same issue on my iPad too. Help?

Anyone have problems with the music player on their iphone 4s? A lot of the time when I'm playing music the voice control pops up a lot, and interrupts the music and is really annoying. I tried turning off voice dial but that didn't do much. I've heard it could be the microphone on the iphone ear buds so I tried using different headphones and that seemed to help but I like using the ear buds. Is there a way to turn off voice control?

Also I noticed every now and then the music player will just start randomly play music even though my iphone is sleeping. I make sure to kill all my apps so they aren't running in the background everytime I'm done using it.

Anyone else have problems like these with the music player?

Is Garageband on the 4S?

I was pretty blown away by Garageband on my friend's iPad 2 last night. Tempted enough to maybe even just buy one. I'm soon going to be doing some animated shorts and it seems like it would be an easy way to make some custom music.

Got my 4s yesterday, never really spent a ton of time using an iphone and yes it's fast and the battery life is great but the OS is pretty disappointing. I need a new phone though and the new nexus being a monster makes this pretty much my only choice, oh well I'll get used to the inconveniences that are part of the UX.

Got my iPhone up and running today. So fun to mess around with.

I can set up my exam times way in advance with SIRI with only a few sentence exchanges. Incredibly useful.

For those of you that bought your phone at AT&T or Verizon you can still add Apple Care+. I called 1-800-myiphone and was able to add it to both my phones.

I actually didn't know there were people that didn't do that.
There aren't, I'm the only person who doesn't do it o_O. But seriously I usually charge it at work so when I'm home I'm already pretty much at 100%. In any case the airplane mode works great.

I feel like I've already asked this, but what the hell I'll ask again. Where do you people get your ring tones and alerts? I know I can make my own, but I'm looking for a site that already has a bunch of them. Looking more for video game stuff and movie stuff.

Does it matter how long you charge it for?

I mean I could either charge it at work (for an hour or so) thats usually how long it takes to get back up to 100%

or should I leave it in overnight to 100% like 6 hours charging?

I read somewhere you shouldn't keep lithium batteries plugged in (although i could be wrong)!

Regardless I'm only getting a day's worth of charge even less when I play games like Real Racing 2....

I made my own using Garageband - it uploads in into iTunes for u. Its pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Any decent piece of modern electronics- including the iPhone and other mobile phones- should properly manage the charging cycle without the user having to worry about leaving it plugged in too long or something.

There are exceptions (for example the Kindle 3's charge cycle is screwed up, and will actually drain the battery down if left plugged in too long). iPhone will be fine though. I'm speaking from experience of owning iDevices since the day the OG iPhone was released and charging them routinely overnight.

Has anyone explained why 3G streaming is such a battery drain as opposed to wifi even though you're not moving from place to place? I watched like 3 hours worth of stuff on wifi yesterday after a full charge and the battery is just at 62%

Re-post from the comparatively vacant iOS 5 thread:

I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue with the 4S or a software issue with iOS 5. On my 3GS, when I was listening to music or podcasts, an incoming text or e-mail would sound the chosen ringtone through my headphones, letting me know that something arrived even if the silent switch was on. With Siri, I was excited that I would be able to have these messages read to me instead of having to take the phone out of my pocket.

But for some reason, with my 4S I never hear a chime when a text or e-mail comes - I was streaming the latest ThisIsMyNext podcast on the bus the other day, and when I took the phone out of my pocket to open the browser, I saw that I had 5 new e-mails and a couple text messages. I upgraded my 3GS to iOS 5, but the battery is dead so I can't test it at the moment. It vibrates, but why doesn't it make a sound anymore? Do I need to turn off the silent switch now?

Do videos taken with the 4S show up on the PC via Photostream?

EDIT: Guess not. Probably fill up your 5GB fairly quick. So I'm guessing you can just connect the 4S via USB and take them off that way?

Anyone notice their white iPhone get dirty quick compared to the black? Any history of the colour yellowing? Not sure if I should get the black or white :/

Mine looks great and when I see the samples out in Apple stores, they’re not dirty (unlike the white plastic keys on the keyboards. ugh).

the outer covering is glass, not paint, so don’t expect yellowing or dirtiness on the surface if you take care of it.

I've had the same issue, but mine varies. Occasionally it works, most of the time it doesnt. Very annoying.

some of the guesses that Siri makes regarding intention is quite annoying. I asked “what is the distance from the earth to the sun” and it says it can’t search for restaurants in canada.

sigh…

then I ask, “what is the distance between the sun and in the earth within the solar system?” and it tells me it can’t provide driving directions in canada.

c’mon!

sometimes it’ll know to search Wolfram but I find that too many times it’ll misinterpret general knowledge questions as specific location queries so I need to preface a question with “wolfram” to get it right.

it’s formatted well within siri but it’s more frustrating than just using the wolfram app or web app.

At this point, siri works best for me at setting reminders, calendar events and timers. it’s genuinely faster and easier than doing it by hand. but the service will be much cooler for me once these interpretation issues regarding knowledge questions are hammered out (and when Apple integrates more services into the database)

The energy used to transfer data has a higher cost per byte over 3G as opposed to Wifi.
3G also wastes a lot of energy by staying in a high-power state after the transfer is complete, where Wifi does not.

As long as you transfer data when connected to a Wifi network the higher costs of maintenance (keeping connected) is offset by the energy saved (compared to 3G) when transferring data.

British Siri can answer that.

wtf.

rechecking.

argh! now it’s doing it right… same exact phrasing (also tried ‘distance between earth and sun’ and it works)

I swear it wasn’t working just 30 minutes ago unless I prefaced it with “wolfram”.

anyway… beta, anyone? :P

Unfortunately. Hopefully the update will arrive earlier than the new iPhone.

I'm probably going to buy an iPhone 4S this week, and I'm seriously tempted to go into my nearby Apple Store and buy one before I start work tomorrow. I have an iPad 2, and I love it, but I want the convenience of an iPhone.

That said, I'm absolutely clueless about phones, as I've only ever owned one, and it's old as hell. So I have a few questions.

1) What is a factory unlocked iPhone? And how do I go about getting one?

2) I'm planning on buying a 64GB outright, so I'm not locked into a contract that will cost me more in the long run. I saw some Gaffers a while ago mention GiffGaff a while ago, and I'm thinking about getting the £10 goodybag there. That looks like good value, but I'm always welcome to more suggestions.

3) Is my phone number assigned to me as soon as I switch the iPhone on? Remember, I'm embarassingly clueless about phones, haha.

Thanks.

  1. It just means that you buy it from Apple (and later other retailers will sell them unlocked, if they're not already) rather than from a carrier, who would 'lock' the phone so that it can be used on their network (and other partner networks in other countries) only.
  2. I have no experience of them. If you're a light user then pay as you go type deals will almost certainly work out better for you.
  3. It'll be associated with the SIM card you get from your carrier.

So you aren't on a contract at all atm? Firstly I don't know if it's even possible to do what you want but buying a phone outright is a really bad idea, IMO. If you buy the phone on its own then you will need to use your own sim card. PAYG will likely have no data allowance and then the iPhone just becomes an expensive iPod Touch. The beauty of a smartphone is its data connection. I pay £40/m for unlimited texts, 700minutes and 750mb of data and the iPhone 4 was free. I've used it heavily while out and about (streaming music from Spotify, uploading lots of photos to Facebook while outside) and I've only used 300mb in 2 weeks. IMO you need a contract with at least 500mb of data to get any benefit from your phone .

After using the camera a bit, I don't think the new camera is all that great, the colors are all on the warm side and using the physical button causes camera shake. I hope the next update fixes the color temp issue. Maybe next next iPhone they redesign the button to have a half press feature so the camera doesn't shake. It still shows alot of noise in my pictures, does camera + have a manual white balance feature? Macro focus is pretty good tho.

Guys I need advice.

I am wanting to pull the trigger on a new phone today, but I don't know what to get.

I have never owned an iPhone, always hear great things.

I owned a Samsung Galaxy and an HTC Desire z, so my only smart phone experience was with android.

My Samsung went through the wash, and I currently have my HTC.

Thing is my phone randomly shuts down, freezes, sometimes it's REALLY laggy etc...

I am looking at either the iPhone 4s or the Samsung Galaxy SII

Things I like about my android device:
- The Widgets, I like that when I power my phone on at the home screen I have the time, the weather (animated) and the forecast for the week all there on my home screen.
- Screen sizing, and swype technology for texting.
- Memory Expansion ability, I like the fact that I can utilize SD cards to expand the memory on my phone to whatever I want.
- A non glass screen, I know alot of people knock the samsung phones for the plastic screen but I have seen COUNTLESS iPhones with busted screens and I don't want to go through that!

Things I feel I am missing/would like to have.
- A phone that I don't have to worry about it lagging, freezing up, forcing me to remove battery to get the phone to reboot.
- Media organization, I constantly struggle with my android device to load musics or podcasts onto it in an organized fashion. I had an ipod touch at one time and loved it for media playability/games/apps.
- Games, I have alot of downtime at work, and while there are a slew of games on the android device my old ipod touch gaming experience felt significantly better then what I have now.
- Something that wont be outdated in 6 months.

I really like the widgets/ screen size of the Galaxy SII but I am tired of having phones that feel like I am beta testing them, I just want something that works as a phone and text message device that has some games available for it and I can enjoy using day to day.

Simple is better for me I suppose.

What to do...

you won’t get the lock screen widget functionality that you’re used to but, frankly, the rest of the experience on iOS is so much smoother and the music management with iTunes so much more robust than android that I feel it’s an overall upgrade in user experience.
