There is one smartphone in the before pic...I will never deny that the iPhone had a huge impact on smartphone design/function, but that's a heavily biased to one side picture if I've ever seen one.

Those bastards, the sensor is working perfectly. But for some reason my battery is draining suepr fast... what the fuck
Turn off the raise to speak feature for Siri (which is useless anyways).

That makes a huge difference in battery life.

Seems like their is some bug with that proximity sensor for Siri. Unless you use it a lot I would just it off and wait until Apple gets their shit together and fixes it.

I agree.

Even though the phones were shit Windows and Sony and Nokia were making smartphones before the iPhone.

Man I hated Windows Mobile. What an offensive OS. Symbian was great for dumb phones but translated horribly to smartphones.

It's fairly representative of the design aesthetic of smartphones of the era, though. Regardless, It would seem more an illustration of what people in general carried then as opposed to now.

no its not. there are still dumb phones in the market which look like the phones in the before group.

Sure, but the current smartphone design is much more common than it was back then. And the majority of companies making smartphones now are going to release with something like the current design.

So the consensus is the iPhone 5 will just be the same as the 4S except get the iPad 3's processor/RAM specs, right?

No, I don't think there is any consensus on anything at the moment. Even the rumor sites are rather quiet (and more focused on th iPad) it seems.

Pic is total crap. You could easily hand pick tons of stylus based touch devices that were essentially just big screens and the whole thing would break down.

The phone as just a slate/screen was already a major design trope by the time the iPhone released.

A better comparison would be the slide from MWSF 07 showing the popular smartphones of that time before Jobs unveiled the iPhone.

Yup.

I remember about a month before it came out. I was 19 going on 20. I was at a party sitting on a kitchen floor with a girl and a few others. We were just musing about technology in general. And I went on this epic drunken teenage rant about ubiquitous wireless and started chanting "the cellphone is the new computer." It was really funny. I got on the subject because there was a cable modem on the floor right next to us and I was totally tripping out on how ugly the yellow cord was. It has that weird skeletal texture to it. It repulsed me. I still think back to that yellow cable on a gross and sticky kitchen floor.

Major in what sense? I don't think many of the major players were really bothering at the time.

I dunno, my friends dad had a winmo phone like 2003 or 4 that was just a touchscreen. I remember thinking it was insane. It also had a fake keypad for dialing. I also remember playing with a palm III when I was like 11 that was also just a plain black slate with a big ole touch surface as the only input method.

The iPhone changed everything, I'm not disputing that. And yes, every single individual at my work carries around a little buttonless glass computer when that would not have been the case 5 years ago. That picture just bugs me. It implies a past without touchscreen mobile devices. When in fact, touchscreen based mobile devices have been around for a VERY long time.

Yeah I agree that the pic ignore the touchscreen phones before the iPhone. Now granted those phones from Sony, Dell, HP, etc were total shit, but they should have been included in the pic as well. It wouldn't have changed the point either, no one is copying a HP WM phone from 2003. Almost every new smartphone is copying the style of the iPhone. I don't think anyone sane can dispute how big of a change the iPhone was to the market.

I really think its more referencing the whole 'everyone at work has this' aspect than anything else, but I understand what you're saying. Though the Palm iii IIRC is pretty far from a buttonless slate, but maybe I'm thinking of something different.

Oh it definitely had buttons. But the it's main input method was a touchscreen. From "this is what that thing is" standpoint it is not far removed from an iPhone at all. I mean, look at that homescreen.

I'm thinking now about Palm. Maybe I'll start collecting some old Palm devices to go along with my Minidisc players.

EDIT:
OMG I just remembered at one point before I had wifi I was obessed with the idea of having a BLUETOOTH modem and a PDA to browse the net in bed.
A bluetooth modem. OMG. :O

I'm a huge fan of the Incipio Feather. It's like it's not there.
That's pretty cool. Not sure about the logo, but I'm not sure how actually noticeable it'll be.

also I'm pretty sure there was someone around here talking about a case that was named something related to liquid, but I can't remember exactly what was said.

=[. Lost my Iphone 4s last night when I was out with some friends. I tried calling the number but my phone was turned off. The worst part is, I try to go on the website to file a insurance claim and it says I don't have insurance on the damn thing!!! I know for sure when I was activating my upgrade over the phone I told the lady I wanted insurance! I'm screwed...

Story time!

Let's hear it.

Pretty simple, really.

I got the launch iPhone back in 2007, posted pictures on Facebook which impressed a girl, so we got talking and went to a party together.
She messed around with my iPhone then I messed around with her.

Sme girls and status symbols...

Same thing happened to my iPhone 4. As soon as I got home searched for it with find my iPhone but it was turned off. I was insured but not for theft/loss. Now I am back to my slow ass iPhone 3 :(:(

Yeah this isn't normal... I've never had this phone die out on me in less than a day...[/QUOTE]

Yeah the battery definitely doesn't last as long as my old 3G. It get's annoying if I decide to study at a cafe after class and my battery is down to 20% :( Ah well.

It's pretty crazy, like the article says... Everyone says they all look the same because the design is "obvious". Sure, obvious after Apple did it.

I remember seeing several slate designed tablets before the iPad. Picking the tablets with poor designs just to prove a point is just kind of lame.

My iPhone 4 has been having mad battery issues lately. I am not doing any more browsing or use than I use to, but the battery is draining much faster. Like 20%+ overnight while in standby. It used to be 10% tops.

I have let it drain completely then completely recharge a few times to try and reset it. I have turned off notifications for certain things and it is still happening. At work I turn off the wifi so it isnt looking for it. But it is still draining faster. Any ideas? I know plugging it into the car USB port for the 30 min drive to work each day shouldnt affect it too much.

I kinda wish tablets would go back to their old design... not necessarily in aesthetics, but in digitizer technology. I like the idea of a tablet as a handwriting/drawing device, but the use of capacitive screens is inadequate for that.

Back then, almost all tablets had some form of wacom technology, or something that emulated it. It allowed you to be able to put your hand on the screen and write on it without causing any errant marks. Try to write on an ipad now with a stylus and notetaking program, and it's impossible to write naturally.

But I know, Apple's vision isn't in pen based input, but damn I wish it was.

There's a few apps that can do palm rejection for capacitive touchscreens.
