Yeah I'm a new every 2er, so that's my main consideration.

Well I have the exact same functionality for free through google music, and I'd rather not rely on 3g (even though my area usually has great service) to listen to a song that I don't have locally stored.

In that case, go big and don’t worry about it. you'll have space for your current library and more as it grows.

How is the fit and finish? Is there enough room to use aftermarket headphones? Did you get the green/gray combo?

It feels great in my hand, quite sturdy. It doesnt feel like a delicate device with the case on. I've used 2 pairs of headphones: the B&W C5's and the Klipsch S4's and have had no problems. I got the black one.

yeah I feel the same way about the 3G stuff. it's nice as a backup, but it doesn't strike me as a good thing to rely on. when you wanna hear a song you need it right then and there, no questions asked. local I just more reliable for that. I have the 64gig an have about 38 of it filled with music, and it grows constantly. that's not even counting my photo library or app data.

you need that storage y'all

I downloaded two playlists and a few artist I listen to most, and stream the rest of my collection.

Does iMessage on the iPhone still require a working sim card with data to set up? If so, is it possible to give another iPhone user one of the email addresses for the iMessage account instead of the phone number?

I'm about to make the switch from Blackberry to iPhone 4S. I'm pretty excited about it.

Do I need a screen protector? My iPod Touch is holding up pretty well without one, but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Must-own apps? Being a (soon-to-be) former Blackberry user, I wasn't fortunate enough to have really good apps available on my phone. I'll get the usual (Facebook, Twitter, Shazam) that I got for my iPod Touch, what else? Throw me anything!

You're in for a treat.

Nope, the glass is pretty scratch resistant. Keep it away from keys and sand and you're golden.

If you're a student, iStudiez.

Best GPS (and it's free to boot): Waze, now with voice commands

*bow* thank you, sir.

I figured a screen protector might not be needed. I've had my iPod Touch for 3 years now, and there's only one scratch due to dropping it on a rocky surface.

What's the benefit of buying an unlocked iPhone? Never owned a smartphone before, wondering if I should sign up for a contract or buy it unlocked.

I know nothing.

Buy the iPhone unlocked and you can choose a sim only deal from whatever carrier you want. I'm on a rolling monthly contract at the moment but l could change to another carrier if l wanted, all l have to do is give them 30 days notice. That's how it works in the UK anyway.

Yep this, and you can easily upgrade the phone when you like, not when the contract ends (again, might be a UK thing). I pay £16.50 a month on 02 in England for Unlimited texts, 300 mins and 500mb data. I bought my iPhone 4S SIM free from Apple, which is an expensive initial outlay, but I am not tied into a 24 month £35+ per month contract on the phone.

Works for me at least :)

I have joined you guys.

First impressions: Holy fuck the screen. My droid 2's battery was dying so I kept the backlight really low. This thing is so crisp. And it's so smooth. Fast. There was always a noticeable lag on my droid. Will be fiddling with it more.

I'm thinking of buying apple care. For a hundred bucks, is it worth it? I know it covers everything...

Also case or caseless?

This is exciting. I love getting new tech :D

I know nothing.

If you know you're going to stick with a carrier for 2 years, buy locked. If you buy unlocked, you'll be paying the same price for your monthly plan as those who bought locked but without the benefit of the ~$500 subsidy.

I've got a weird issue with my 4S/iTunes.

On my phone I have no music at all, nothing.
If I connect my iPhone to iTunes I have a bunch of greyed out music when I look at the iPhones music directory. It's stuff I have purchased on iTunes (just some random tracks, not all of them).

Any idea what is going on? I can't delete them, they are greyed out. Yes, Manually manage music is ON.

Love my iPhone 4S so far. It's an unlocked phone, too, so I can bail out of Rogers when my contract ends in a few months.

Got a question on my phone being unlocked: does this mean I can use it in any country with any of their respective providers, or is it only unlocked with North American carriers?

Do you have iTunes and wi-fi synching turned on on your computer? If there's two arrows circling each other on top of the screen, that means the music is being uploaded.

If not, you could try manually adding music and see what happens.

When did iMessage start giving you a "read" timestamp? Or have I just never noticed it until now?

It's always been there. It's optional, so you probably just noticed it because so few people turn it on.

You can use it overseas.

Quick question-
Someone grabbed my wife's iPhone tonight while we were out at a bar.
Is there any way to track it?
Can I remotely install anything?

Suggestions?

It's a Sprint phone if that changes anything.

She isn't currently a mobile me subscriber fwiw.

You can wipe it, lock it, etc.

You are on the latest iOS? You don't have an active apple account on your phone?

She has an Itunes account. Regiestered to a gmail address.
If I log in to icloud.com though, her device doesn't show up. I'm assuming there is something we didnt' set up?

Not unless you had Find My iPhone toggled on beforehand(Settings -> Location Services -> Find My iPhone).

If it's any consolation even if you had it enabled it might not have gotten you anywhere. A thief could just turn it off immediately and then plug it into iTunes and reformat it which would nullify it or the police might straight up tell you they won't/can't do anything with the information(both happened to my brother when his car got broken into.)

That's what I figured.
Worth a shot though.

Thanks-

Sorry to hear about her iPhone, man.

Even if you had it on, the best you could've done was wipe the device. Location service could only really show you the area, and nothing more specific.

Both myself and my girlfriend have a 4S. iMessage used to work fine, but now when we message each other, it is always a text. We are both always on a data connection or WiFi.

Any ideas how we can get the phones back to sending iMessages? (We both send iMessages to other people without a problem).

Edit: Problem solved. After looking through her phone, imessage had somehow been turned off.

Had the same thing happen to me briefly. Sent a message, and it went through as a text, then another one I sent to the same contact went through as an iMessage again.

Hey guys, am I to understand the front facing camera (FaceTime) quality would be the same on the 4s as it would be on the iPod Touch current model?

I am having a problem is not being able to delete a failed podcast from my iPhone no matter what I do -- so I am hoping restoring from back-up will fix it.

The problem is I already made a back-up once I got home with the iPhone and the stuck podcast so when I restore it will I be able to pick a specific back-up (i.e. one from this morning)?

Anyone know if it's possible by default or with apps to change multiple sounds within the iPhone? I don't just mean ringtones, I'd love to have a "themed" sound suite similar to the ones for Windows 7.

Not possible.
Possible if the iPhone is jailbroken.

The biggest annoyance I have right now, coming from an android phone to the 4s is lack of a dedicated back button. My fingers sometimes instinctively move to where the back button was .

This thing is fantastic though.

edit: any way I can get my phone to recognize my apple id so I don't have to keep typing in my password to download apps?

Yes, if the phone is jailbroken. You can get something like a back button too if the phone is jailbroken

A settlement has been reached in a class-action lawsuit targeting the antenna performance of Apple's iPhone 4.

As part of a preliminary approval made this afternoon, U.S. residents who bought Apple's iPhone 4 will be entitled to $15 in cash or a bumper case provided by Apple.

The settlement comes from 18 separate lawsuits that were consolidated into one. All share the claim that Apple was "misrepresenting and concealing material information in the marketing, advertising, sale, and servicing of its iPhone 4 - particularly as it relates to the quality of the mobile phone antenna and reception and related software."

The settlement has its own Web site, www.iPhone4Settlement.com, which will be up in the coming weeks (the site doesn't go anywhere right now). There, customers will be able to get information about the settlement and how to make a claim. As part of the arrangement, e-mails will also be sent alerting original buyers to the settlement before April 30, 2012. The claims period is then open for 120 days.

"We believe that the Apple iPhone 4 settlement is fair, adequate, and reasonable," Ira Rothken, co-lead counsel representing the class, told CNET. "We believe that it allows members of the class to choose, and they can get $15 of cash or a bumper, so we believe that type of choice is proportional to the circumstances."

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Just cleaned my phone with a toothpick. It worked pretty well. Just scrape it alongside the steelband and where the glass meets the plastic edge. It'll kick up all kinds of good stuff.

I'm at 13% battery, the Usage indicates the phone's been in use for 5 hours and 10 hours standby. I've been using wifi all day.

Is this normal? Screen brightness is on auto and is at 55-60% near as I can tell

The dropped calls are very annoying in 4S. Worse than 4. Also, sometimes the software stops responding to touch unless I lock and unlock again. Lastly, the compass always needs calibration, and even then it's not accurate.

4 > 4S in my mind.

Honestly sounds like bad hardware or some weird software problem.

I've had zero dropped calls on the 4S and I can't even get it to replicate the massive signal drop when holding the phone across the bands on purpose.

You should try to get it replaced at an apple store. Seriously. That is totally atypical of the 4S

This keyboard is trash and apple should feel bad about it. I make so many mistakes and need to blame them. For my life, really.
