That's what mine says, too.

I ordered mine at about 8:15 EST.

I'm hoping it gets sorted out, as I was on the phone with AT&T about an hour later trying to change the phone color to Black, but they said it was too late. If I have to wait for the phone, they ought to let me change my order.

I might be able to do that if it's just a case of showing up a bit before the store opens and not a case of having to line up overnight.

How does it work when you buy from an Apple store, anyway? Do they have access to the various providers' systems and are they able to give you upgrade discounts, activate your phone, etc.?

I think because of the single-phone-for-all approach they decided to unify the crowd and not offer in-store pickup and first-come-first-serve queues this time around.
I live near the largest Apple store in NorCal outside of the bay area and last year showing up at 3am still meant that I waited about 60 minutes after the doors opened to get in, pickup my preorder, activate, and walk out for the iP4.
I'd plan on being there from Midnight on if you really want one day 1. Remember that in years past Apple Stores get massive shipments each of the subsequent days following the release - You can always try lining up the next morning. Don't ask how many they're getting, they won't tell you, just ask if they'll have some at all - that's just about all the information they'll volunteer.

So this is interesting. I had an opportunity today to do a side-by-side 3G data speed comparison test between my AT&T iPhone 4 and a Verizon iPhone 4. Did a bunch of real-world tests, web browsing, YouTube etc - and the Verizon phone CRUSHED my phone in every instance, it wasn't even close.

Now I know this is not in any way scientific but I found the results really surprising, all I really hoped to see was the Verizon 3G hold its own against my current phone, and it totally surpassed my expectations. I now feel much better about having switched :)

Just so you know, Verizon compresses web site data over 3G.

http://support.verizonwireless.com/terms/network_optimization.html

How Optimization Works. All HTTP (Port 80, i.e., World Wide Web) traffic is directed to the optimization process. The direction of traffic to the optimization process is established when the user starts an HTTP data session before any requests for content from a specific web site have been made. Accordingly, content files are not selected for optimization based on the nature of the web content itself or the source or provider of the web content file. All web content files delivered over Port 80, regardless of source, are directed to the optimization process. The system thus captures all Verizon Wireless branded web content delivered from its web servers, and treats such content in the same way as content of the same type requested from non-Verizon Wireless sites on the Internet.

Sorry to repost this but can anyone help me out?

When I ordered my 4S I entered my brothers number because he used my last upgrade so I get his(same account). When I get it how do I get it to work with my line? Calling ATT this week is gonna be a nightmare. Can I do this online? Maybe I'll hit an ATT/Apple store.

Can I just put my current micro sim in it, or will it come with one tied to the line I upgraded?

Thanks.

I just called the nearest Apple store and the guy on the phone didn't think my prospects would be very good unless I got there the night before. He said they had a huge crowd for the iPad 2 and didn't have enough stock for everyone, but he wasn't there for the iPhone 4 launch so he has no idea if phone launches are different or not.

I then called a few Verizon stores, and the closest one to me is doing an 8am launch and told me that I'd probably be fine if I showed up even at 8am. Apparently they only had 10 people line up last year for the iPhone 4 and didn't even sell out of them in the first day.

Of course, the iPhone 4 was already old news by the time it came to Verizon, so that might explain it. I think I'll try showing up around 5am or so at the Verizon shop and hope for the best.

I would go to the Apple store if I was you. They will have the lions share.

Any suggestions for a good screen protector? I thought about getting the Zagg Invisible Shield, but I have heard the quality has really dropped from the 3GS models.

If is anything like the 3gs launch they'll be enough even if they sold more than iPhone 4 on the first week.

Though this could be very different due to the 4s having a new antenna (eventhough it looks the same), and the modified A5 along with the new 8mp camera from Sony, so this case might be different. Just bet your luck on the line!

edit: Stumpokapow is the best mod

Hrmm... I'm having trouble deciding now. Haha! Just from talking to the guys on the phone, it sounded like my prospects for getting one early in the morning at the Verizon store would be better, but it is true that the Apple store will be getting the most units. Damn, maybe I'll wake up at like 3am, drive down to the Apple store and check the line, then if it's too big, I'll drive back to the Verizon store.

I wonder how many is too many for the Apple store. If I see over 200 people or so, I might just head over to Verizon. Then again, I have no idea how many units each Apple store gets.

Only buy your iPhone from a carrier store if you are a masochist. If you enjoy life, go to an Apple store.

Out of curiosity, what's the difference? Other than friendlier staff and a much nicer store front that is...

I just don't want to waste my time waiting in the cold only to end up not getting one. I also don't want to camp out from the previous evening.

I preordered my 4 from a local ATT store and everything worked out fine, I got it on release day and I didn't have to wait in line nor did I have to stay up late to preorder it on Apples store. This was in midtown Manhattan too.

Thinking if my status stays at October 21st, I'll just try at an ATT store on that Friday, and if I get one, cancel my order.

Just my personal experience, I had a nightmare buying an iPhone 1 from an ATT store, it was a total clusterfuck. Been to an Apple store every time since and it was smooth like butter!

Question: is there a consensus for the best GPS/navigation app? Thinking about switching to iPhone for that and giving my old GPS to my mom.

Navigon and TomTom are the two I always see mentioned.

As an avid TomTom user, I can say that it rocks and rules and couldn't recommend it enough.

I waited 8 1/2 hours in line morning of the iPhone 4 launch without a preorder. Was not fun lol.

I wish the 4 would at least get the handsfree texting ability of Siri. :/

Wait for the Jailbreak community to poke at it. Maybe they could get some of the functionalities into it like how they could for iphone 3gs to iphone 3g.

I have Navigon and it's also great. It gets updated fairly regularly with new maps and features, and there is a brand new "2.0" overhaul with an all new UI and stuff coming out very soon. http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/0...-drivers-updated-for-android-windows-phone-7/

I'm sure you can't go wrong with either one.

Oh, that sounds awesome. It is definitely due for a UI upgrade so it should be out any day now it seems.

The 1 problem I have with Navigon is when selecting different routes, it does a shitty job or comparing the routes to you other than the extremely general route line. I hope the new update gives more details, possibly even previews, of routes before you select them.

Anybody who ordered from Sprint have their status updated yet? I'm still stuck on:

"Thanks for pre-ordering. A shiny new iPhone is waiting for you in our warehouse. Excluding extreme circumstances, you will have your device Friday, Oct. 14 or Saturday, Oct. 15. During the pre-order period, we will send you a shipping email and tracking number. Your tracking number may not be updated until Oct. 14. Questions? Visit sprint.com/preorder."

How do these navigation apps compare to Google Maps's navigation? $60 is pretty steep for something free on a different phone.

Keep in mind that Google Navigation may make or break my iPhone purchase. There's really nothing like it on iPhone....and free....

this is not exactly an apples to apples comparison. Navigon stores the maps locally on the phone while google does not - which means you can't really use google's solution when travelling abroad unless you want to rack up huge data roaming fees..

bingo.

I need an app like Navigon when I cross the border from Canada to US. Or even if I’m staying in canada but driving to some camping site and 3G reception drops to spotty EDGE.

Ah, I see. I never go abroad so....yeah....I'm just gonna hope Google Nav comes to iPhone someday :lol

Okay, so, like, yeah. I asked this question a few pages back and no one really answered it, so I'm going to repost it and also ask an additional question:

1. I'd *like* to just order this phone from Apple if I can, but I'm having problems because my line isn't actually due for an upgrade (btw, I am on Verizon). HOWEVER, I'm on a family plan of 4, and the OTHER three lines ARE due for an upgrade. My line's upgrade was actually used on my sister when she got her own iPhone a few months ago, but now her own line is upgradeable, and so are both of my parents' lines, so I'd like to use them on my line. I know this is possible by going to a Verizon store, because the employees allow this without any difficulty. My question then: Does anyone know how to switch the upgrades on different phone lines? I looked and can't figure out a way to do so.

2. If I line up early at the Apple store and stuff, will THEY be able to switch the line for me as if I were at a Verizon store?

3. Is pre-ordering online only? I know some people here said that if I line-up early enough I should be able to get one, but how can I pre-order at an actual Apple Store (if they allow it)? I'd probably have to drive there, no? Sucks since the nearest Apple Store from me is about a 45 minute drive...

I think that's all for now :p

Mine still says this as well. The bolded part makes me pretty frickin confident we will be fine :)

Anyone have any success changing the address on their Sprint iPhone order? I live in Atlanta but my account address is in Dallas.

Woo - my 4S is "preparing for shipment"! I think since I got the Applecare+ I might actually go caseless for a while, see how that goes. I've been using my 4 without a case for the last week and it's been great. Love the form factor of the iPhone 4.

Same here. Mine just updated to "Preparing for Shipment" as well. My AppleCare+ is still "Processing Items" though.

Hype!

Whaze. It's free and it has voice turn by turn. Also it learns from other people going to the same destination. It's cloud base navigation!

It ships to the billing address of the credit card you pay with.

I see a lot of people going from a 4 to a 4S. How do you get around the fact that you haven't reached the allowed upgrade timeframe?
I guess some people are just willing to pay the higher price. In my case I paid the higher price for the 4 last year to avoid the contract extension, so I am eligible for the good pricing this time.

EDIT: Actually that's true if I had stuck with AT&T but I'm starting a new contract with Verizon so it's all good either way.

I thought you would stick with ATT after listening to the podcast, lol. Norm seemed to convince you pretty well.

I went back and forth until the last minute but in the end I just couldn't stay with AT&T any more.

Well, I've bought train tickets (2 hour journey!) so food supplies will be next for my overnight Apple Store extravaganza. Now, I'd REALLY better remember my credit card...

I don't think anyone needs a case, it comes down to how anxious you are about the phone getting scratched, but the 4 (and presumably the 4s) is pretty hard to scratch.
