iPhone 4S |OT|

Just realized that once I get this, it'll be the last time I probably sync my phone with my old 12" PowerBook before upgrading my Mac.

At least my library actually exists on my external HDD and I can just transfer that over later on to the new mac.

Hard to believe people are complaining/minimizing a jump to dual core. The Android guys eat that kind of shit up. :D

I have to learn to stay away from bait like this.

Android suffers from fragmentation, hence it isn't optimized for every phone. It needs more processing power to get to the "smooth" level that comes close to the iPhone 4.

iPhones are a closed system. The OS is designed specifically for iPhones only. You can optimize a shit ton of stuff this way, hence, the OS is smooth as butter even on a single core.

Given that, because it's already running nicely on a single core, a second core won't see much visible benefit besides 3D gaming.

Please know that smartphones are complex devices and these things don't just boil down to "more cores" and "more gigahertz"

im not making fun of you, you seem p sensible compared to the other loonies. as ive been saying, as a consumer its far better to work by the 2 year cycle both from a financial and technological point of view. i'm on a 3gs, so a 4s seems like the logical step-up (if i bother) because the the iphones have advanced greatly over the last 2 years. if i had a iphone 4, id wait until 2012.

what im trying to say is, you have to wait to see large improvements of what you want (which appears to be design etc). its really the nature of the beast when apple is releasing models every year. they're probably on a redesign - refinement cycle and it wouldn't be worthwhile otherwise.
I totally understand what you're saying and, in fact, our statements have not contradicted each other. You can have a great phone, that for someone upgrading to it or getting a new one, is a great and logical choice. But at the same time, that doesn't make it exciting.

It's why I don't get excited when a dual core 2GHz Android phone comes out (or whatever), or a 1.4GHz Windows Phone compared to the 1.0GHz model. Or when the Macbook Pros get a minor spec bump.
Those are great, but unless you show me something that is tangible, like the Thunderbolt port, or flash memory in the Airs, or the retina display on the iPhone 4, or the software in iOS 5, or Windows Phone Mango or Ice Cream Sandwich, I'm not going to get excited.

And it probably doesn't make sense for Apple to make a new design for the iPhone when they can still compete with this design, but as a geek, I don't really care about that.

They could've come out with a new design with a 4.0 inch screen and that alone would've made it more exciting. Even if it was the same internals as the iPhone 4.

But if you were to hand someone an iPhone 4S and an iPhone 4, outside of Siri, would you really be able to tell a difference? And that, as a geek, is disappointing.

And with that, I am truly 100% done running my point into the ground.

Do we have any idea what time preorders will be starting on Friday? Hoping my work schedule doesn't interfere.

Given my past history preordering anything, it will be at an obnoxious time which will lead me to preordering one in store hours later hoping I get it on launch day.

The problem with this is that the 3GS still exists. Apple didn't kill it; they made it now free. So instead of phasing it out where maybe the 2 year cycle could apply, that's not going to happen. Plenty of people are going to hop on to a free iPhone and that's just going be still keeping the 3GS legacy alive rather than phasing it out.

I haven't kept up with NFC exactly, but I thought NFC devices could talk to each other.

The 3GS and 4 are in the same performance category though (with the 3GS actually performing better in some 3D games because of the lower resolution). Its only the smaller RAM pool that is somewhat problematic.

Problems will crop up if the iPhone 4 starts to linger around like a bad smell, support for it needs to be dropped wholesale within 2 years, or things will be start to be held back significantly.

and LTE/4G in its current roll out is actually hitting where HSDPA+ is coming in at

Im not exactly sure what you are saying here. But LTE is fast, fast as hell, and alot faster than HSPA+ Wimax and all the other '4G's that themselves are faster than 3G. Thats really not something that's up for debate, its proven, many times over. Wimax and HSPA+ are fast, worth the effort IMO, but the LTE, especially Verizons is just amazing where its available. signal strength and speed indoors in particular. And its rollout is going FAST, it isnt in the infantile state that people seem to like to paint it in at all. People buy phones with 2 year contracts also. Its not just a question of this technology now, but for the next 18 months while people will have these devices and be stuck with them unless they want to buy un-subsidized.

One can live without them, definitely, but it would certainly be nice to have it. Very very nice. And its benefit would be noticed, easily.

Ars had an article a few months ago on the two sensors 8MP Apple could've used for the 4S - http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2...phone-5-camera-wont-be-much-of-an-upgrade.ars

big takeaway? it's another cellphone camera.

I will still take it. Its some actual effort at least. Camera have been ridiculously ignored IMO. There is room for much improvement. Im not expecting to replace my point and shoot, just to see as many advancements in the camera as we do with the CPU, GPU, RAM and the like. Android is particularly bad with slapping more megapixels on while leaving the actual image quality shit. Its annoying.

my contract runs out in january 2013, iphone 5 should be out by then hopefully. i dont see a good reason to upgrade from iphone 4 to 4s

Probably been asked, but will they produce new iPhone 4? As in, can I get the old iPhone 4 in 64GB or do I need to get the 4S to get that size?

I always have mock Android vs IOS battles with people at work (me being the only person with android vs a dozen of them). Today was there premptive mocking of the glory that was to be the Iphone 5

Tomorrow is gonna be fun ; )

iPhone 4 is now only 4GB at $99.

You want 64GB you're going to have to spend $399.

iPhone 4 was never 64GB sadly. But you can probably pick up a refurb 8/16/32 iPhone 4 from a carrier or Apple. They'll come with a 1 year warranty and the potential to add Apple Care.

not that anyone cares, but i'm sitting out this cycle. i'm still very happy with my iphone 4 and OS4, which i've jailbroken and enabled tethering on (with no warning from AT&T after a year!). i have an iPad 2 for all the iOS 5 goodness, and will await the likely new redesign next year.

i think i will sell my 2011 MBP soon, though. the new chips will be faster while sipping less power, and there's rumors that the entire laptop line will be redesigned next year. hoping.

As a current iPhone 4 owner I'm a bit bummed that it doesn't look any different. The white version's not for me. It looks like a big chunky bar of soap.

But looks like Apple didn't refresh the iPod Touch line either, which is stuck at A4 with 256MB of RAM. If they don't phase the current models this year, well...

What's your fallback computer if you sell the MBP? I'm tempted to ditch my MBP for an Air and give up on playing computer games anymore...was just waiting for Diablo III anyways :lol

Touch just seems like something Apple could give a fuck about, but are just coasting with what they have for now.

I think the market for iPod Touch's is better served by dropping the price. They're treating them like a commodity product, which is sound at this point. Also, By lowering the price, they open up some room in the lineup for a reduced price iPad 2 once the iPad 3 hits in the Spring. Maybe next fall they bump the Touch to the A5, keeping it a year behind, but allowing them to keep the price low.

I wouldn't worry about the pace of progress. Almost as soon as the 3GS came out I found apps that wouldn't run on my 3G...

It's over a year behind now though with 256 ram...

My Current phone. Had it for 5 years

With its dying battery, me needing an all in one device, siri, and a nice camera to have with me at all times I think its time for me to upgrade. Really wanted the 5 though but this is still great. Better than what I'm using.

Launch day iPhone 4 here and its still going strong, still loving my phone to bits. I'll wait until the iPhone5 comes out. Those new features do look great though (well, except Siri, I can't see myself talking to a phone). Glad there is finally a 64G version.

The real news is the 12th October release of iOS5. A week is too long wait!

i have a desktop hackintosh (shh) that dualboots Lion and Win 7 just peachy with no crashes connected to a 28" display.

i'm recovering from a thoracotomy for the next few months, so i've no need for the MBP since i've taken a couple of months off from work and not traveling much, anywhere. it's a shame too - the machine is an absolute monster and i added an SSD and upgraded the RAM to 8GB. alas, it sits in the corner unused. :(

Why is this exclusive to the Apple Store and their online equivalent? I want to move my family plan over to Verizon but I'd only like one or two iPhones out of the five lines I have. Craaap. How am I supposed to do this?

So how long until the iPhone 4 and iPad 1 get knocked back into the iOS Ghetto like the 3G?

Probably a while. The fact that they still sell the 3GS makes me think we have another two years on the iPhone 4. The iPad 1 is the one I am worried about being dropped sooner rather than later.

Lol my mom has this phone. LG Dare I think it's called? Probably the worst touch screen ever. Piece of junk phone.

Guess I'll go into BestBuy on Friday and see if they'll do some early upgrade or if Verizon will run an early upgrade promotion for the 4s. Might be my only shot.

LTE IS in its infantile state. You can't launch a device GLOBALLY that can only run on a network that is available for a single digit percentage of its user base. The phone will be out in weeks, and in weeks the global adoption of LTE will still be in its infancy. The issue here is that LTE barely exists in the world today and launching a consumer grade device on that network would be an absurdly poor choice. Same issue when there was the move to 3G (actually 3G was a little better more adopted).

So initially I was like boo its not iphone 5 and I would just get a samsung galaxy s2 on sprint.

Then I sat down and thought about it. My GF is not as technologically savvy as me. For her the iphone on sprint is ideal. She will upgrading from an htc hero and she has always wanted an iphone and here is her chance. I want to be able to facetime and imessage with her.

I'm jumping in for sure. Preorder will be going in on friday. Can't wait.

Personally I am a gadget fiend. I buy gadgets no matter who makes them. I have always loved apple as a company(owned lots of ipods, powerbook, macbookpro and an ipad). I was never willing to switch phone companies for an iPhone. Finally, I get the chance to have the phone I wanted on the network I am loyal to. Feels good man.

Being an engineer and a linux geek I will always love android but its time to go where my heart is. iPhone 4s come to papa.

Yep. The issue is that you're pumping crap over the wire. The entire NDEV solution is cloud based so its only any good when you actually have network (and a fair amount of bandwidth).

You've got one more device revision for the 3GS. I'm calling that one right now. The 3GS struggles badly and is going to definitely hamper their efforts when it comes to better integrating the Siri experience with the rest of the device.

I'm on the "upgrade every year, regardless" track. Have been eligible every year without fail so it's easy.

How'd you do this. I upgrade every year but end up paying up the ass for it.

I actually considered getting this, but there are just things that I know that I'll never see that prevent me from getting an iphone (or this model specifically).

1) I want my screen at least to be big and sexy at at least 4 inches
2) I don't and will not use iTunes
3) iO5 is too limiting of an iOS (but I could jailbreak, which makes it a top tier phone again in terms of customization, right?)
4) The proprietary cables are annoying
5) I want expandable memory
6) I want voice by voice as good as the one on Android for google maps along with all the other cool features there..

Let me know if there's a work around #2...

The things I really like about this model:
1) Camera is amazing for a phone, probably the best out there
2) The specs are very powerful
3) The battery life still outperforms anything on the market
4) I still really like the design - one of my favorites for a cell phone (but I gotta say that I think I like the Galaxy S II design a little more (at&t version).

I still laugh at all my the people I know who couldn't wait another month for this phone. But then again, it's not like they need the extra power since they are casual users.

EXACTLY what I wanted.

Same form factor, better camera, and finally 64 gigs of storage... Now I can finally have the all-inclusive device I've always wanted.

I've waited this long but I think I'm finally going to bite.
