I am glad I am one of the people in the iPhone's "evolutionary" cycle (3G, 4) rather than the "spec upgrade" cycle (3GS, 4S).

Feel sorry for those on the cycle that always have to wait 2 years to get a phone with a tired looking design, like those 3GS people who are stuck w contract when everyone is holding a 4, while those 4 will not look dated when 4S is out.

Chatted with an Apple rep and asked if I could use the phone overseas without needing it be unlocked and she said yes. Not sure if that's correct but if so…

use the phone overseas is different than sim-lock

That's as much a GPU benchmark as it is a processor one, so perhaps not the fairest test. Is there one with a straight processor shoot out with something non GPU related?

You are chatting with Brittany M, an Apple Expert
Hi, my name is Brittany M. Welcome to Apple!
Hey there! What brings you into the Apple online store?
Hi. If i buy the Verizon 4S, can I go overseas and use a prepaid microsim in it?
I'd be happy to help you with that!
You would be able to use a carrier internationally that uses Micro-SIMs and supports GSM, yes.
What I was mainly concerned about is if it would be "locked".
Yup!
No worries. It's a world phone so it can be used internationally.
I see. Would it be the same for the AT&T 4S? Or is that version still locked like the iPhone 4 was?
That phone can be used internationally as well.
This was the convo. Not sure what to make of it.

That seems strange, unless all the phones come unlocked.

"You would be able to use a carrier internationally that uses Micro-SIMs and supports GSM, yes."

This line especially is kind of confusing.

Edit:

Or you could be like me and get a new phone every year.

I wouldn't make too much out of that at all. The phone will be locked and you will need to unlock it before you can use a different SIM card. However, you can use it internationally without unlocking it with the carrier you have your contract with.

What carrier would the Verizon 4s be locked to? They don't use sim cards.

i left sprint to go to at&t in 2009 when the 3GS came out ONLY because sprint didnt have any good phones at the time. now im definitely going to switch back day 1. 64GB in black for me.

Again, those are all just as much GPU reliant tests. Which is a pointless comparison when talking CPU power unless of course the 4S will also use the PowerVR SGX 543MP2.

I believe that's an integrated part of the A5.

I'd want to consider buying this iPhone if it does indeed allow me to use a tmobile sim card without the hassle of having to unlock it.

Interesting. In-that case colour me impressed. At least at the CPU/GPU combo.

It will most likely be downclocked slightly but even still, definitely no slouch.

Any info on when Sprint will have them ready to order?

Should be able to preorder the same time as everyone else this Friday.

Ive been using the touchpad for the last four hours, i am back on my ipad 2. Touchpad is such a piece of shit.

Oh yeah iPhone 3Gs to iPhone 4s White day one i really like sirii.

Yup I'll be upgrading... sold my iPhone 4 a while ago so I'll break even more or less.

Really looking forward to using Siri! 10 Days...

Unending jealousy over the new camera. I'm a huge fan of iPhoneography and omg, this looks so good.

But whatevs, iOS 5 is enough to tide me over until the next version (or the one after, if funds are insufficient).

The rumor is that the App store is supposed to have something regarding an upgrade for A & T customers. I do not see it. Has anyone else and if so what is the upgrade deal.

Question.

I have unlimited data plan on my iphone 3g. When I go to the apple store to go get the iphone 4s and extend my contract with them will I lose the unlimited data plan?

That will fucking suck if it do.

The A5 contains a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU with NEON SIMD accelerator and a dual core PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU.

That's from wikipedia, so the 4S should be similar to the iPad 2 in benchmarks.

AT&T’s new ‘Upgrader App’ allows users to check eligibility, pre-order iPhone 4S

If they say you will lose unlimited, sign up with sprint and port your number! That is my plan.

You're not supposed to. You are supposed to be grandfathered in no matter what as long as service is continual.
LyleLanley said:
Thanks. Doesn't look like it's ready yet.

I really wish Apple would release how many they are planning to ship. I hope it's a lot more than the original iPhone 2. I'll wait in line but I don't want to wait longer than 4 hours in winter at the Apple store.

I had unlimited data on my 3G and upgraded to my iPhone 4 last June and I kept my unlimited plan.

So long as you don't choose a different plan or leave AT&T and come back, you should always have it. You're grandfathered in.

Something I just noticed about Siri; in the keynote it says you have to push the home button to activate it, but in their promo video, they were showing someone in the kitchen cooking using it completely hands free? What's that a bogus mock up?

Aren't they starting to throttle people after 2 gigs anyways though? At least, thats what I read somewhere recently. Forgot the source :/

They will definitely have more than the iPhone 2G launch.

Mother of fuck. Still 2.4Ghz WiFi.

FUUUUUUHHHHHHH

:sigh: Time to cough up money onto your feet, Apple. I hate you.

Dont want to make a new thread, but I was wondering what anyone would recommend for a Verizon customer that was hoping the Iphone 5 was coming out soon, but now has to decide whether to pay retail for a 4s or a 4G droid?

What are the best 4G phones available for Verizon, or would yall recommend going with the 4s? Thanks gents.

I was wondering about this as well.

From MacRumors:

With the Verizon/CDMA iPhone, Webb believes Apple's designers "moved the GPS and Wi-Fi antennas beneath the back glass and turned the top antenna into a second antenna for the cell phone." This brought spatial diversity to the iPhone. This design helps solve the Antennagate problem, because the phone can switch between the antennas depending on signal conditions.

Siri sounds awesome. Voice to text on Win Mango is epic and this seems like a logical evolution. Everything else is meh for me tho.

Looking for the post where we rip into Apple and the oh-so-magical iPhone 4S? You’ve found it. All the voice functions and competitive pricing aside, the iPhone 4S hardware is Lame. (Yes, with a capital “L”). Just how lame you ask? Compared to what Android is offering–and has been offering since the beginning of the year–it barely manages to keep up.

Let’s recap the main focal points of the iFail 4S announced today. Unspecified dual-core processor, 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video capture, 14.4 HSPA+, up to 64 GB storage and a Retina display. As you can see, pretty boring for a phone announced at the end of 2011. So just what does Android already have to combat the iPhone 4S? And what about phones that will be out in the near future?

First up for dissection: processors. Apple has put a dual-core processor inside the iPhone 4S. Big deal. Android phones have been rocking dual-core processors for a long time now. The Samsung Galaxy S II utilizes a 1.2 GHz dual-core Exynos in most of its configurations. The T-Mobile version of the GSII comes with a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S3. And that’s normal for Android phones. In fact, if your Android device doesn’t have a dual-core processor, then you’re behind the times. Google is set to announce the next Nexus in about a week, and you can bet that device will have a dual-core at the least. Oh, and don’t forget the quad-core NVIDIA processors coming to market soon.

Apple placed a lot of emphasis on the camera of the 4S. It’s an advanced 8 megapixel sensor that features 1080p video capture. Apparently, Apple has been studying HTC’s latest devices. HTC has been working hard to improve the camera phone lately. The myTouch 4G Slide really turned it up a notch, and the Amaze 4G will take it to the next level. SmartShot, BurstShot, SweepShot panorama, ClearShot HDR, PerfectPics, 1080p video capture, a dedicated camera key and a dedicated camcorder key? The Amaze should give even the upcoming Nexus a run for its money. It’s rumored to launch with an incredible camera that will blow you away. And if you want megapixels, Samsung is working to release a 16 megapixel smartphone camera. It should be on display come MWC.

Want to hear a joke? HSPA+ 14.4 Mbps. Want to hear an even funnier joke? CDMA/EVDO Rev A. Not everyone has access to 4, or even “faux,” G Internet. And that’s not such a big deal. But any and every major Android device released in the last year has at least had the necessary radios on board to go as fast as the network in your area will let you. If you want to stick with HSPA+, T-Mobile is about to release a couple 42 Mbps HSPA+ devices. Sprint has WiMax devices galore. Verizon and AT&T? They use LTE, a seriously fast 4G technology. So fast, it makes Sprint’s 3G look like dial-up. In fact, that’s roughly how fast Sprint’s iPhone will go. Seriously.

Let’s say you want a ton of storage, but you don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for it. Android devices offer expandable storage. You can choose how much internal storage you want and pop in a microSD card for more. You can also take that card with you and keep using it time and time again. With the iPhone, what you buy is what you get. And if you want 64 GB of storage, then it’s going to cost you $400 on contract.

The display on the iPhone 4S is a true testament to just how far Android devices have come. When the Retina display was first announced, everyone was amazed at how crisp and clear images were. But that was a year ago. Now, display technology has far surpassed the Retina display. SLCD qHD displays are fantastic, and Super AMOLED Plus is absolutely incredible. When put next to an iPhone 4S, you can tell Samsung really knows how to make a display. If you think Super AMOLED Plus looks good, just wait until you see an HD Super AMOLED display. Samsung’s latest crop of displays have been called jaw-droppingly gorgeous. And guess what? The next Nexus will indeed be utilizing a 1280 x 720 HD Super AMOLED display. With a pixel density of 320ppi, what more could you ask for in a display?

Did we miss anything? Is there anything else Android devices can boast that the iPhones can’t? How about NFC, removable batteries, hard keyboards, different display sizes, Flash, an open Market and the greatest community around. Yeah, all that and a little more.

Anyone know why this guy took such an epic shit on the iPhone4s?

That was just brutal.

So, serious question here: What has Jonathan Ive and his team been doing for the past year? Ok, so there was the iPad 2, but I'm sure that design was finalized in January at the latest. There's been absolutely no new form factors after that for any Apple product, whether it be Macs, iOS devices, or even accessories. Absolutely NOTHING has been touched in terms of external design.

I'm honestly curious how Apple's design team have been spending their time, day in and day out. Do they just come out with a boatload of concepts for fun and end up scrapping 100% of them? Have they been sitting on a beach? It's not like Apple has a massive product line, and the iPhone is their most important product. Seeing as how Apple is the richest company on the planet, R&D money wasn't the issue, and neither was time (16months+), nor capability. So, what, then?

Rumor has it that a completely revamped Macbook/Pro design is on it's way, that along with the next iPad and what will surely be a redesigned iPhone 5/4GS/whatever they call it is probably keeping them pretty busy.
