iPhone 4S |OT|

I'm about to head out to Costa Rica for an extended weekend. I'm hoping I have Internet service while there and can place my pre-order. Otherwise I may have to wait awhile.

I have an AT&T upgrade. It's looking like a 16GB White 4S for me. My wife is probably going to sign up for the 3GS at $0 + contract.

I'm leaning towards getting a slip case for my 4S, because I'm more worried about protecting the phone when it's in my pocket or gym bag than when it's in use. I'm never going to use a screen protector, so the snap cases which leave the screen exposed don't really appeal to me. Although if I did go that route I'd pick up a clear SwitchEasy Nude. Great looking case.

Has anyone used either of these Sena cases?

I like the Sarach for the look...

...and the Kutu for the quick release and extra protection (higher sides, slightly thicker leather).

Which data plan do most of you guys have? Options are 200MB, 2GB, and 4GB.

200MB. I'm a cheapass and I barely use the cell signal for data unless its an emergency.

I'm gonna have to switch off iCloud day 1, unless there's some way to tell it to only operate when a wi-fi signal is being used.

You mean scratches on the case right? It says that it's a very tough material. It also has covers for the ports on the phone like Kermit wanted.

Yeah I meant the case itself. It looks pretty nice and minimal which he wants so it is a good suggestion.

Help me, friends!

I have a 3GS and I've basically annihilated it over 2.4 years, but its still trucking. I'm upgrading next week to the 4S and I'm excited, but I need some case suggestions because one of the MAIN issues I had with the 3GS was fucking pocket fluff getting in the headphone jack and breaking it.

Are there any 4 cases out there which have a flap that covers the headphone jack when I'm not using headphones?
You know I've been looking for this kind of thing too. How's this?

:p - I'll check back in again if I find anything more... manly.

A friend of mine has a brown variant of that bottom one and it's great. I'm thinking of going for the red/white (or white/red) Corsa variant myself.

So I have a 4 on at&t right now, the service I get is beyond terrible and I'm thinking ordering a 4s on Verizon or sprint, I know verizon is pretty good around were I live but I need to ask is sprint any better? DC/MD suburbs fyi. Also what kind of charge should I expect from at&t for switching carries? Ive had the 4 since it launched.

Per AT&T Wireless support, if you have a smartphone your early termination fee will be $325 less $10 for every month you've stayed under contract. Assuming that your iPhone 4 was activated 16 months ago that would be a charge of $165.

Has anyone tried to get an upgrade price from sprint before their time?

Did it work out?

Yes. I wasn't eligible until 11-1 according to customer service. I asked if they could move up the date and was told "We no longer do that*." So I said that's fine, please transfer me to whomever I need to speak to with regards to closing my account for this line. They transferred me, and the person there said that they (account cancellation services or whatever they are) can move the upgrade date. Or rather, they can put in the request to reset it whereas regular customer service cannot.

*that being whatever the terminology is to move your upgrade date ahead of what it is. Which later turned out to be a 'reset' on your upgrade status.

So if you buy an unlocked iPhone 4S -- how are you going to switch over to a CDMA network? They don't use SIM cards or anything. How would I switch from Verizon to Sprint? Or from AT&T to Verizon?

Can I assume that any skin (including side strips) or case that fits the Verizon iPhone 4 will also fit the 4S?

I know it's 3 grams heavier but don't think the shape has changed.

I'm leaning towards the Kutu/Corsa as well. As much as I love the look of the Sarach, I don't like the exposed corners. Pity Sena doesn't sell a version of the Kutu with the Sarach's stitching!

Someone sell me on the 64GB model. I'm leaning toward 32GB because of the $100 price difference but I don't want to regret my decision later on...

Not sure if it has been posted already, but you can now check for Sprint eligibility on the Apple website. It still says "coming soon" but it's working for me.

Did you actually get it to go through? I got the following even though I know I'm ok for an upgrade:

Account type not supported.

We’re sorry. Your account type is not supported. Please contact your Sprint account manager or call *2 from your Sprint phone in order to verify your eligibility and complete your iPhone purchase.

I have no need for it. I'm thinking that you can get the (obviously) higher resell value for it though if you want to think about that for down-the-line. A viable 'sell' would be a lot of music or video/tv/movie content.

I have an iPod classic and that $400 price tag is just ridiculous. Plus I don't want to spend all day listening to music on the iPhone as it would just run the battery down. Definitely getting a white 32gb.

Going 32GB then. Thanks for showing me the light.

I would imagine 32GB would be more than enough, unless you have a shit ton of content you want to store on it. Just think that you're saving $100 off your next upgrade two years or so out.

Trying my best to get this phone without a new plan and paying full price. Sprint better not fuck me, they just cut the premim plan and I've paid $120 for 4g that isn't available for my area (Detroit).

Does the classic work on flash memory or spinning plate?

Don't remember

I always buy the biggest one available because I know that if 6 months from now I fill up a 32GB iPhone I'll regret not getting the 64GB more then I would regret paying the extra $100 had I not filled up the 64 GB. It also depends on how long you plan on keeping the phone, if you plan on keeping it for the full 2 years of the contract then I'd go all out and get the bigger one.

But what would I do with all that memory? I won't be storing my music or photo collections on the phone.

Would apps and game save data and internal stuff really require that much space?

Well if you do not plan on having any music and photos 32GB should be good. Some games can get fairly big (iOS standards) but you should be good.

Depending on what kind of apps you download they can add up pretty quickly, I believe infinity blade is around 700 MB, and more and more of the nicer looking games that are coming out are starting to get in that range. However, if you don't plan on storing any music or photos on the iPhone then maybe you don't need the 64GB version then.

Before my first 3GS was stolen, I had a 16GB version. Told myself that there's no way I'd fill it up... but I did. So when it came time to get a new one (used my dad's upgrade since he barely uses his phone) I went 32GB and figured it was enough. Well, I managed to fill that too: apps, music, shooting video, pictures and then digital copies of movies. Hell, after I deleted Infinity Blade off my phone - I had freed up a gig practically.

Have I been on contract for my 2 years? Yep. Did I regret not going bigger when I first had the chance? Yep. Getting extra storage does make bearing the burden of a 2-year contract easier - since you won't feel like you'll be itching for space immediately. Before, I barely had any apps, just mostly music and no photos or movies and thought that 16 was enough. Instead, I was having to sync constantly just to get stuff off my phone to make more room.

And for the record, I'm going white 64GB this time.

Plate...there are real hard drives in their....I need to pick up a new classic. I'm still rocking one of the first iPod videos from 2006. I need the space too as the 80gb just isn't enough any more.

I may wait out the initial wave and see what ATT and Verizon do with their pricing... I like sprint's plan but don't feel like switching if either of the other groups match. Also can I talk and surf on sprint like ATt ?

Yep. I'm going 64GB for the same reason: I know I'll fill it up. Very glad I went with the 64GB iPad, and happy to throw an extra $100 at the iPhone to make damn sure I have all the space I need. Plus I plan to record a lot of 1080p video, and never want to feel constricted by lack of storage.

I'm undecided myself (though we don't have prices yet in the UK). I have a 32GB 3GS at the moment and don't have problems, but I envisage myself using the camera a lot more in the 4S so I'm thinking it might be worthwhile paying the premium.

Yep. I recorded the last part of the Little Mermaid ride from Disneyland from my last trip over the summer. It's about 22 seconds long, audio's decent, capture is okay since it's on my 3GS. Already I know that it's a couple hundred megs - and that's non-HD.

Just recording bits of say World of Color - that's a ton of space I'll need on my phone.

No, the talk and surf requires GSM.
