iPhone 4S comes out on a Friday, and everyone I know who have ordered phones with Friday launches had to wait until the Monday after.

Someone in this thread said the new Applecare+, which covers accidents, has to be purchased at the same time as the phone. Don't know whether that's accurate but something to think about.

IIRC, that is what happened last year with the iPhone 4. Ordering it from Apple was the only way to secure the Day 1 delivery, whereas AT&T was days later at the earliest.

I'm just teasing. Not sure how the phone itself factors the amount of preorders at the moment but you have Apple, Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T sites to get your order in as opposed to just Apple and AT&T so it might not be THAT loony.

The Apple retail store says it's a first-come, first-served basis on October 14 but what about if I'm buying an unlocked iPhone which Apple usually requires an online reservation for? The online reservation tool isn't working right now. Is that due to the website problems or it's not necessary for launch?

I should have clarified that the Applecare+ option is the one I was hoping for. It seems a whole lot better than the insurance offered by Verizon, which requires a $169 deductible per claim. I guess I'll have to wait for Apple's store to come back up.
