This is more of an iCloud/iOS5 thing but I've been playing around with Photo Stream and it's pretty great. Take a photo on your iPhone, come home and it's already on your Mac, no need to sync. And it's already on your iPad too. I already "got" this concept but when you actually see it work, instantly and seamlessly, it's impressive.

Photo Stream is great, but it's a huge annoyance that you cannot seem to delete anything from it (at least on iOS devices).

I take a bunch of iPhone screen caps and such and as far as I can tell, there's no way to get rid of them other than waiting 30 days or whatever.

Turn it off.

I agree, that is annoying.

And what is so wrong with Apple using a software feature to sell a piece of hardware? Isn't that EXACTLY what they do with computers? While their computers aren't necessarily off the shelf, they aren't terribly exotic hardware wise either. The existence of OS X is to sell this hardware. Apple would not be nearly as successful if they just installed Windows like everyone else does. They certainly have the ability to do, but instead they fund a very expensive OS project to sell the hardware.

Yeah, software can be used to sell hardware. Get used to it.

It's the fact that it's 2+ year old software. There's nothing innovative or unique about it barring some specifics of the implementation. OS X isn't touting 2 year old features upon launch as a selling point - those features should have been standard long ago.

Didn't they say that they needed the A5 processing power to get Siri to work right?

But it's apple here. Beats the excuse with how they couldn't get the % battery indicator on iphone 3g >.>"

You are wrong if you think all Apple did was buy Siri and slap it on the iPhone 4S.

Is that what you think?

Marty hasn't been paying attention

Photo stream does not count against your iCloud storage space.

Ya, and it will obliterate your iCloud storage. The photos and videos I have on my phone already exceed the free storage for me already. I had to turn it off and just went back to normal backup.

Does not count against photos!

Though only keeps the last 1000, but it also automatically goes to your iPhoto album or on your PC so it takes care of that.

The "Killing Data" part is plausible I guess.

iPhone has had Voice Control for years. Siri is a whole new thing. It's had apps on mobile devices, but now it's completely built into the core OS.

You're absolutely insane. Apple bought siri, what, 2 years ago? You think they've been sitting on their ass for those 2 years? They've obviously been working on it since then. Nothing innovative or unique? There's nothing even CLOSE to what it does on anything else. It is, and this isn't overstating, revolutionary. There wasn't anyone who wasn't blown away from the hands-on impressions. Go check Engadget and ThisisMyNext impressions, among others- they've tried every single device out there, and were shocked at how good this was. They even tried to screw it up, but couldn't. The live demo worked with 100% accuracy every single time, something amazing in and of itself. Those features 'should have been standard long ago'?? Really?? That's one hell of an expectation, considering noone had it standard, and noone will have anything like it standard in the near future except for Apple.

No offense, but you're utterly clueless as to what's a huge step forward. Voice control has always been extremely limited, finicky, and unreliable- which is why pretty much noone uses it. Just like touchscreen devices before the iPhone, mp3 players before the iPod, tablets before the iPad, appstores before the Appstore, I can go on and on. And every single time, the arguments are the same- LOL MP3 PLAYERS ALREADY EXIST. LOL TABLETS ALREADY EXIST AND THEY SUCK. Like everything else that Apple makes, this will be the first intuitive and useable implementation of voice tech, and the mainstream will actually start using it because of that standard. Your argument is completely irrelevant and off-base, and it is made every single time, in the same assinine way, and these people never learn.

Your Camera Roll does count against your storage. It told me I was going to exceed my 5GB limit because of it.

With previous online pre-orders, has Apple sent them early? Or will they promptly deliver the phone on the 14th?
Last year people who pre-ordered the 4 online got it a day before the retail launch. Nobody knows what will happen this year.

Photo Stream does not upload to the cloud while on 3G, it would wait until you connect to WiFi. And under iCloud > Documents and Data you have an option of disabling cellular for that stuff. It's just bookmarks/calendar/contacts/reminders/notes (all tiny stuff) that sync over 3G.

Gary Whitta said:

The worst part is Apple does not communicate this at all when you enable Photo Stream. I can see a lot of people being angry when they realize they aren't able to delete stuff from Photo Stream, especially those who take naughty pics. Though on the upside, this might lead to more celebrity nudes leaking out.

The guy you responded to was talking about photo stream.

The original person I responded to didn't specify. He just said photos would be uploaded to the cloud to which I responded it would take a hit on your iCloud storage.

Wait what? Photo Stream doesn't work over 3G? Why is it grouped with a bunch of things that are updateable over 3G? I hope Apple has a good FAQ of how all of this works out there because trying to figure it out from the Settings is very confusing.

Exactly. What a joke that they're basically holding loyal customers hostage over a feature that has been on other phones for YEARS now by featuring it EXCLUSIVELY on a new model coming out when it's easily implementable in software. Sad.
I dunno you might be right, but I'm leaning towards the fact that having Siri deeply integrated into iOS itself and not just running as a separate app requires the extra processing power and possibly more RAM to keep the phone operating as smoothly as they want it to. Plus if I had to guess Siri is just going to keep getting bigger, better but also more demanding, so even if the iPhone 4 could handle it fine right now, there might come a time when it can't which could cause more problems than just making it iPhone 4S or better exclusive from the start

What will be interesting is to see if it can be made available when you jailbreak an iPhone 4.

I had always assumed Photo Stream worked over 3G as well but after checking just a few minutes ago on the GM, it says in small print underneath (after you click through): "Photo Stream automatically uploads new photos to iCloud and downloads them to all of your devices when connected to Wi-Fi."

It would be nice if they included a toggle option for those of us on unlimited data plans.

Holy carp... sold out already huh? Crazy.

Also, am I the only one who noticed how all the old Android threads are being bumped lately? I wonder why ;P

Can someone explain to me why the fuck there is absolutely no consistency in design of the dock icons, and how every single one looks like it's in a different style, created by a different designer? So disjointed. I actually want to buy this phone if it's good, but I've seen other pics of ICS, and the UI simply looks horrendous.

Or you can just call. I did that took about 5 min and he changed my shipping to next bussiness day to make sure the change wont affect my 14th shipping arrival date.

I have ordered two phones on Apple, one on my itunes account and the other on my gf's. I want to change the shipping addresses to my work. Is it possible for both accounts or just my account? What will I need to be able to change her shipping address for this order? I have ordered both using my CC.

I just gave them the order number and verified the billing info. They were more than helpful in changing my shipping and one of them wasnt even under my CC. 1-800-my-apple

Winterboard themes are 3rd party. Do you mean Springboard?
No I mean the the icons on Google's flagship phone look of slightly lower quality than those of a guy making them at home.

Can only speak for London but yeah 3 was bad. The kicker was my sister sending me a text while I was in uni and me receiving it something silly like 6 hours. Thankfully it was not in that occasion but if something important happened I'd be fucked. So yeah don't bother with them, just on a personal note my sister is on O2 and her phone signal is great which is why I'm going with them.
I have this all the time with O2, it's not a network specific problem it's a coverage specific problem. I don't think you're going to know how good/bad a carrier is for you specifically without trying them out (or knowing somebody that has similar movements to you).

I've been with O2 these past two years and the reception in the two places I spend 90%+ of my time (home/work) is shocking. So even if Three is the same I'm not missing out, and obviously if they're better I'm on a winner (and paying a lot less as well).

How about a sleeve case, just something that you keep your phone in when it's in your pocket?

Anyone know any good ones?
I'm picking up a Sena case. A colleague at work has one and it's great, really nice soft leather - fits the phone perfectly.

I've decided I'll get this. I am on O2 but the problem is that they aren't doing pre-orders and I have Uni on friday morning so I'll miss out :( Not sure what to do but hope that some are still available. Bloody O2.

that's an interesting design.

makes sense, but I wonder how it fits in the pants pocket. if that odd shape has any consequences when it comes to storage.

Screen caps...uh huh.

edit: Beaten on this one too. That's what I get for going to bed.

Wow...is that a Nexus Prime in your pocket or are you happy to see me, amirite??

edit: beaten like 4 year old in Kmart.

It's silly, but I'm really excited about this. I had an iPhone 4 until earlier the iPad launched this year, when I sold it (to pay for said iPad) and got a HTC Desire in its place.

For me, Android just isn't the same...I don't hate it, but I think that it's clunky and unattractive in comparison, with an inferior selection of quality apps. I know I could tinker with it and customise it and so on, but I have no interest in doing so. It's good, but it isn't for me - that goes for the newer iterations (which the Desire stopped getting a few months (months!) after release) too, as I've played around with them on friends' phones.

As a result, barring disaster, I'm spending several cold, dark hours queuing to get one of these unlocked on Friday morning. I'm thrilled to be on my way back to the fold.

can you wait up to a year? it's hard to tell when the next one will release.

I'm already seeing the iPhone 5 rumor articles set for Mid-2012..I don't mind that much of a wait.

How big was the time-gap between the 3GS and 4?
