I barely get 3G service in NYC from 11 AM to 1 PM (lunch time) so I would be very surprised if I was somehow able to get their 4G service throughout the day.

Someone who is familiar with this technical stuff -- is it possible that I could have shitty 3G service but great 4G service?

I heard from sprint that they'll ship on the 14.

Not delivered on the 14.

Anyone heard otherwise?

My Sprint preorder says "Excluding extreme circumstances, you will have your device Friday, Oct. 14 or Saturday, Oct. 15."

I know, I just don't think it was clear whether you'd actually get that speed on AT&T, I believe people were asking about it int he thread.. I could be wrong though.
It's the max theoretical. What speed does AT&T's HSPA+ network average?

did a speed test on my 3GS and got 1mbps down and on my atrix, which is one of their HSPA+ devices I got 5mbps down. This was just a minute ago and 2 bars each, hardly scientific but whatever. I am in NYC.

So in the Apple video describing the 4S one guy talked about the camera and how they recognized that "adding more pixels doesn't necessarily mean a better image". This I can personally attest too, as the Droid X2 camera which I currently own, kinda sucks, even though it has 8 MP. Why is it so shitty despite a high pixel count?

This gives me hope. It would be amazing if being able to get on their "4G" service allowed me to actually use the internet around lunch time in NYC. Right now I have to switch back to EDGE to move around at all.

A higher resolution really refers to the size that you can display or print the photo at without loss of clarity or pixelation on close viewing. You might read this.

The quality of the image does and has always depended primarily on the quality of the optics.

AT&T is so full of shit, their 3G network barely functions as it is so I'm not taking these claims of "4G" service too seriously.

So does the HSPA+ stuff not apply to Verizon/Sprint iPhone 4S users?

Dragon Dictation and plenty of other apps exist. Just because Apple didn't make it doesn't mean it's not on the phone.

There are voice to text apps on a locked iPhone 4? I had no idea (I searched several months ago and didn't find anything). Just downloaded this Dragon Dictation you mentioned, and while it's a tad cumbersome, it works. Thanks! I hereby retract all my vitriol against Apple for not allowing voice to text on the iPhone 4. This is sufficient. It's just that apps like this are a godsend while driving. Any other voice-to-text apps you can suggest that might be even better than DD?

called apple and got the shipping addresses changed to my work address easy peasy.

i asked if it will still deliver on 14th, the guy said they actually ship out on the 14th and wont arrive til 15th or 16th. O.O

I do not know if the guy doesnt know what he is talking about or doesnt know about shipping early or not really confirming it to arrive on 14th for some apple policy legal reason.

checked order status online and says delivers oct 14th.

anyone who called apple got this info for shipping as well?

So Applecare+ needs to be purchased BEFORE activating? I know most Mac products you have to do it within the first year....

Speak for yourself.. I regularly get 1.5Mb+ on AT&T 3g here in Seattle on my 3gs.

I'm hoping the HSPA+ will double or tripple that regularly.. gonna be NICE. Especially since the browser will also render everything faster.

Nobodies network speeds are even close to the theoretical limits.. so it's not like AT&T is alone in that.. and they have improved their network a lot (at least in some places.)

Aye, no HSPA+ for CMDA devices. You'll be at the old theoretical max of 7.2Mbps

That used to be the case, but I'm 99% positive the policy has changed with AppleCare+ due to the accidental damage coverage.

Oh before activating. Hmm. AppleCare+ is bought when the phone is bought. Some folks here were able to call Apple can add it after their preorder was set. So my guess would be yes.

Just did a quick speediest on my AT&T 4... 3.20mbps up 0.8 down. Will be interested to see how my Verizon 4S compares to that.

Second test right after only got 1.78 down... Amazing how much it fluctuates.

Even though Verizon data is technically slower I'm hoping it don't be noticeable for basic stuff like checking tweets, surfing web, uploading photos etc. I don't really do data-heavy stuff like streaming video/music.

Yet when I called to chamge the address told me that they will ship on the 14 .

Hopefully that's not the case

Hm, that's weird. I work in downtown NY and I always have lovely service. I got truly awful service in SF though.

My service at home is great because there's a tower 20 feet away, but it's awful at work or in busy areas.

None of those other applecares cover accidental damage.. I'm assuming they don't want people to wait until they break there phones and then purchase the warranty... makes sense really.

Sprint on nyc is good.

The only issues that I have is sometimes it takes a while t get signal once I leave a building or a tunnel.

I'm going to be really interested to see how Sprint does with the 4S. Does their network have a good reputation?
For phonecalls I'd say they're good, their 3G speeds have been garbage lately though, wimax speeds have been decent. According to my friends and family.

Sprint 3G speeds are pretty horrible. They have EVDo rev. A. I think it tops out at around 100k a second for downloads. Atleast it does when I try it, and that is in places with great reception.

Will my old Apple bumper (AT&T) fit on the new phone, or is there a slight difference in button placement?

Slightly different. The Verizon one will because Apple created a "Universal Bumper."

Guess you'll need a new one chief.

it won’t so this is your chance to go case-less and enjoy the cool, solid feel of steel in your palm!

Just conducted a series of 3G speed tests.

Can't wait to see how 3.5G compares. If it's really 2X faster, at its slowest it would be faster than my fastest 3G tests.

All Americans are going to have an iPhone now; it's just going to be ubiquitous. Sprint was the last major carrier whose best-selling device wasn't the iPhone. Obviously, this has already changed, I'm sure.

I hope this means more high-quality games. I'd like to see RAGE ported to 4S, or a Suda51 title.

Don't forget Nintendo :P

I wonder how many Apple have got stockpiled.

Only brand new component is the camera, so they should have plenty for launch.

And they only need to manufacture one type of phone (disregarding color and storage) since it is a universal phone.

I heard from T-mobile that I'll have it on 14th at home.

What does your online hardware delivery status say? Did you use a pre-order ticket, and what positionnummer do you have? :D

I also was told I would receive it on the 14th, but how can I know for sure...

A version of RAGE already exists on iOS devices.

Do I even have a chance of being able to walk into a Verizon or Apple store and pick one of these phones up on release day? Anyone able to speak from past iPhone releases? Was the 3GS, for example, pretty much sold out immediately across the nation?

If you line up and get there early, yes. If you just randomly show up day of, no.

Best bet is to find an Apple store and camp it, as they get the most inventory by FAR.
