iPhone 4S |OT|

2 questions cause I never come into this thread. 1 Does the canadian iPhone 4S have Siri? And 2, Ive been with Rogers for 2 years now and have an iPhone 4 is there a cheap possible way for me to upgrade to the iPhone 4S?

If you're afraid of looking awkward:

You would think that dictating commands to a phone would look awkward in public, but Apple thought of a trick to make this less weird. By default, if you hold the iPhone up to your ear, Siri is activated, so it looks like you’re talking to someone on the phone rather than talking to the phone itself. Clever, huh?

I don't really care about it doing bizarre stuff. I care about it doing the mundane stuff reliably. I want to be able to slur "getmeupatsix" when I collapse into bed and plunge into blissful sleep without worrying I'll be awoken by my boss calling to fire me at 8:45.

This will be Siri's killer app I'm sure of it.
Me: 'I'm taking a 25 minute nap'
Siri: 'shall I set an alarm for 25 minutes?'
Me: 'whatever'
Siri: 'okay, your alarm is set'

I found out recently that Fido and Rogers in Canada will unlock the phone when your contract is finished.... for a $50 dollar fee.

The fee is incredibly annoying... but at least it can be done.

The fact that there appear to be "official" ways to unlock the phone from Fido/Rogers in Canada and Sprint/Verizon makes me wonder if jailbreaking can activate that feature, rather than do it through a hack. Maybe it could even keep the unlock even if you return to official non-jailbroken firmware...?

I think the unlock is done by whitelisting your IMEI on Apple's servers so stuff like ultrasn0w wouldn't give you a true factory unlock.

Can you imagine how shitty your battery will be when your 3 years are up and you're eligible for the unlock?

Siri will be on the Canadian iPhones, but it only features "American English", "British English" and "Australian English".... there is no "Canadian English".

But the American English option will work just fine. Just don't say "eh?" (lol) or "zed". And Siri will probably write Color instead of Colour....

None of this shit matters. Canadians are used to spelling things the American way half the time anyway, and our accent is closer to the neutral English of Silcon Valley/Hollywood than half of the US's regional dialects :P It's not like Siri has Texan English or Massachusetts English either! :p

I'm not sure about your Rogers question, but I imagine there is an early upgrade option 2 years in.

Do you need the Twitter app installed to use the Twitter integration? Still kinda confused about it. What if I only have Tweetbot? Would it use that app then?

I don't really like using Twitter for iPhone

Heh, you're funny. Apple giving you a choice about what app to use. Funny =)

Yeah definitely. Personally I'm thinking of teaching English in Korea next year, so I may do an early termination of my contract, and this unlock option may have value for me.

Who knows if it would even work on Korea's CDMA network though. For all this talk about "world phone", I sure am reading a lot of weird caveats depending on which carrier/country you buy the phone from. Lots of things we need to discover about that...

None, although the Facebook iPhone app just got a big update, much improved.
so if you take a picture, there isn't an option to upload it to facebook within the camera app? how could blackberrys have had that for years and not ios? i'm confused.

Quite frankly, I really enjoy tinkering with my gadgets, and Android certainly let's me do that a lot easier than iOS. I have my phone set up in a way that I can get most of the important information (weather, texts, latest email, news, and sports scores) without having to go into an actual app. I love me some widgets.

I thought I was the same way as you and picked up the Droid instead of the 3GS. After the initial novelty of customization and rooting for custom ROMs, etc. wore off, I realized how much I actually didn't like the device or the Android OS. It's fine, but iOS just feels so much intuitive and user-friendly. Sure you can't clutter your home screens with various sized widgets that update you with information you probably don't always need at a glance, but I really never found much practical use in any of that. I'm sure some people do, though.

Other than that, every Android device I've touched from the Droid to the EVO 4G has felt sluggish in comparison to the iPhone 4. There are also tons of weird software issues and bugs that seem to occur at random, and I've never found a software keyboard that matches the quality of the one on iOS.

I guess if you're really into customization, Android is great, but these days I just want something that works and feels good to use. That's what iOS brings to the table for me. It's also why I'm more and more looking into getting a Macbook Air after using a bit of OSX at work.

If Siri is on by default when the phone is held up to your ear, does that mean it would be faster to activate it by covering the proximity sensor with your finger, than it would be to hold down the home button?

I wasn't going to get a case but now I feel like I have to.

I would assume that when you hold it up to your ear, it will only reply through the phonecall speaker, rather than the loud speaker... so it's not quite the same.

Thanks for the info, I'd love to upgrade just for siri, but I won't do it if it's really expensive.

Ah, of course.

So, the consensus from all these reviews is that Siri is pretty fucking awesome, big step forward, practical in day to day use, and has crazy potential, although it is still has it's limits. Apple will clearly continue to work on it, and make it hook into more and more data sources.

Nope, your options are these:

If you want super duper Facebook photo integration you should get this, LOL:

Why do people use those big ass clock/weather widgets on Android? Does anyone seriously get any real use out of them?

Do it. Got the 2011 Air, and it's honestly the best computer I've ever used overall. Never skips a beat, gorgeous, light, thin, and SSD makes everything so much snappier. Trackpad is second to none, keyboard is awesome, as is screen quality. I haven't missed the optical drive.

Obviously within the Facebook app, you can take a photo and upload it, or choose an existing photo from your album.

I'm in the same boat. It was fun hacking my Droid Incredible and doing all sorts of weird stuff to it, but it got boring. I know some people prefer that level of control (which I can understand), but it never really amounted to a better user experience for me. I am also REALLY looking forward to better battery life.

Do you like lining up in parking lots late Thursday evening waiting for a store to open on Friday morning? If you do, they should be very available!

I'm actually kind of excited about camping out in front of the Verizon store in the wee hours of Friday to get my phone. I think I may have turned into a bit of an Apple fanboy.

It is kind of fun! There is a weird kind of camaraderie and at Apple stores they usually come out and do free coffee and snacks.

I see what you're saying, and I'm starting to head that way. Motorola's skin of android sucks so much. Although my homescreen isn't anywhere near cluttered. I got the droid mainly for the actual keyboard, which actually doesn't work anymore and I've now started to use SwiftKeyX, which is just as good as the iOS keyboard (had an ipod touch).

As for the macbook thing, I'm definitely thinking about that too. I've been toying with the idea, partially because I want a small, thin computer like the air (which looks great) as well as the ability to make ios apps, which besides the chance of money, helps with getting better at programming which I need for my degree.

I really want to, but I won't be able to afford one until after Christmas time or so. I wonder if it's worth waiting for a refresh next year (assuming there is one).

I imagine the lack of Facebook integration and the existence of Twitter integration has to do with backroom politics between Apple and the two companies.

No, but it's so they show off a 'feature' that iOS doesn't have, for the hell of it, even if completely useless and tacky. Bonus points if it's animated and rapes your battery.

Depends on when you need it. Can't really see them updating anything except chipsets, and that will depend on Intel's roadmap.

Wow I never even thought of iCloud as a way to do game saves. FUCKING BRILLIANT.

What? This was known since iCloud got announced. Plus Steam Cloud has existed for years. Let's not somehow make it seem like Apple thought of something new.

How is the weather widget I showed useless?

Pretty much Android in a nutshell, IMO.

Since I'm on a Family plan and not everyone wants to sign up for a new contract until it's up, I'm gonna be getting an iPhone 4 (possibly 4S) full price from Sprint. Does anyone know if the prices on ebay/other retailers for unlocked iphones are a lot cheaper than those from Sprint or if I should just buy it from Sprint outright?

I thought it was a no brainer... but I also thought we weren't going to see it so soon. This is awesome....

I need an iPad....... where's the 3rd version with retina resolution?????

A weather widget I can kinda see, but I have never understood the giant clock thing.

You'll see a clock on the lock-screen before even getting to the home screen. You also get the time in the status bar. Why do you need another? Just seems totally useless and a waste of screen space.

Yes, I get a lot of real world usage out of this widget:

aix-weather-android-app.jpg

It helps me plan my day.

Your day that flexible that you plan it solely according to possible weather forecasts? Impressive, but not something I've ever heard of anyone doing. Takes 1 second to open the app, I don't see any extra benefit. Also, who cares what steam does? The addressable iOS game market is like 100x as big. It will be an insanely awesome feature for a ton of people. Who cares if they didn't 'invent' it or if it exists in some other random place that nobody knows about? Doesn't make it any less practical. The entirety of android and all other mobile OSes are based upon the foundation set by iOS, so I wouldn't go there.
