At no point did I say that it's wrong to enjoy iPhone games, you're welcome to your own opinion on the matter.

It's just not for me.
I'm just surprised you're so hard on it. There are some solid games out there that are perfect for quick plays. Plenty of 60 fps simple games that play well and look great.

I think you're being too hard on it, basically. If you can pull out a 3DS anywhere, I guess you're lucky, but that isn't possible for many of us.

ordered mine just now (black 32). will take a few weeks to get it but im looking forward to it. ive been limping along with a 3G for a while now (broken home button, a lot of dead pixels lately)

4 million x's ~$700 = !!!!!!!!!!

(that being the money Apple brings in per phone, yes I know people don't "pay" that much)

it takes a lot to manufacture the phone too. so you need to reduce the 700 figure

That's the problem though. They're specific types of games though that work well. I can easily understand how someone would not be interested in most or all of iPhone gaming because of this. So I'm not surprised at all to see a view like this. It's similar how people prefer 360 or PS3 to a Wii. Some people just don't like waggle or those types of games.

Those of you that are not having horrible battery life. What are you doing with your phones?

I have
One email account - google over activesync
push notifications

All the standard stuff. All of this got me excellent battery life on my iPhone 4

Jeeez was it really 4 million sold already?!

If you want an unlocked iPhone 4S, buy it directly from Apple for $649. Any version that you buy from a carrier for $200 is going to be locked to that carrier. If you are traveling overseas, Verizon or Sprint might let you temporarily unlock your phone but you should talk to them about that before committing to a contract.

Or you can wait until the mod community brings the jailbreak/unlocks

Seriously can't comment on this without people pointing out the plainly obvious... happened earlier in the thread too.. lol.

Clearly Apple has costs.. my number was for revenue.. which is enormous.

As someone who has jailbroken and unlocked all of my previous iPhones, I can tell you that sometimes it's a huge hassle and I'm much happier having just bought an unlocked 4S.

My wife is upgrading from a 2G to a 4 and currently has the "Data Unlimited for Original iPhone & 200 Text Messages" for $20/month on ATT. ATT said that her only unlimited option at this point is to go to a $30/month unlimited plan along with an extra $5/month for 200 texts. Is that correct? I looked a few places online, and other people seem to have dealt with this before when upgrading from a 2G. Just wanted to confirm with the GAF iPhone community before setting this up. Thanks.

I was always under the impression that Push was always a bigger battery hog. I've got my phone set to fetch every hour and I do it manually if I need it more regularly than that. Battery life is pretty solid this way for me.
That seems to be the case. Guess I'll switch over to fetch if I start having battery problems. Thank you.

It depends on why you want an unlocked phone. If you want to be able to switch carriers then that doesn't do any good because you still end up locked in to a 2 year contract.

If you just want to use the phone overseas for a few weeks while staying in your carrier's contract, then you could just jailbreak & unlock. Though I would probably wait and see if/how the 4S can be unlocked before you buy one.

I don't get people complaining about the battery. I charged it on Saturday fully to 100% and after lots of Wlan-surfing and Siri-teasing, I was around 20% today.

Yeah I can confirm that. I used to have a employee discounted Unlimited plan at $15 and the bastards make me pay $30 now.

Those worried about battery life: Are you closing apps running in the background? To do this:

Hit HOME twice
Hold down on the Apps until a minue sign shows up in a red circle. "Minus" them out.
You have now turned off Apps running in the background.

You really shouldn't have to worry about this since the theory is there is a very limited number of things that an app can do in the background otherwise it's not running at all. I will have to say, at times it seems that something strays from that and does kill the battery, but in general, the theory is you should never have to be worried about this.

Those Apps "running" in background do not affect battery life. I only close games in that way, and I'm able to use my iPhone for 2,5 days on single charge.

The vast majority of apps take up zero battery life when in their paused state.

Most simply dump memory to file, then re-load the file.

The only one's that don't are those that play audio.

My main battery saving trick is simply to keep the brightness low on my phone. Never have battery issues.. just charge it every night, and on occasion throw it in my car charger while driving.

I don't want to speak for someone else, but personally I try to only keep stuff I need on me at all times in my pockets. Phone, keys, wallet and some gum. Keeping another device in there would just be annoying.

That's not entirely true, other apps can continue to run in the background for up to 10 minutes I believe.

So I download a lot of mixtapes. Any way I can download it directly with my phone? Can it download, unzip, and put mp3 files in appropriate places for listening? Just wondering if I can do this without syncing to a PC. My main problem here is that I'm not living at home at the current moment so I don't have my PC hooked up to sync with it, and won't for another few weeks.

Gotcha. Guess I'm some sort of anomaly.

The 3DS is much bigger than the iPhone. You could fit a few iPhones inside of a 3DS-shaped box. If you calculate by volume, carrying a 3DS and an iPhone would be like carrying about 4 iPhones in your pockets at once!

This weekend I was travelling for about 6 hours, with heavy usage for about 3 of them.

When I reached my destination, I was down to 46%, so I'm glad I had time to charge up, or I would have been thoroughly screw-pah'd.

So how long does it usually take after a new iPhone comes out until you can just walk into a store and expect them to have one?

I saw people doing this on day one. I guess your mileage may vary.

I wouldn't use the term "much bigger" when describing the 3DS vs. the iPhone, but the iPhone is by far more pocketable. It's thinner and doesn't have nearly as much overall volume.

I know it is completely personal preference, but I for one, can't imagine walking around all day with a DS in my pocket.

You don't need to do this, it's unnecessary.

I can't realistically carry around a 3DS in my pocket at work, for instance. I can't pull it out while fixing my lunch at work or when I'm waiting for something to complete on the PC. It's not realistic. The iPhone is used for many other tasks aside from games so it's acceptable to carry around and use just about anywhere. I mean, 3DS at work? What are you thinking?

Besides, most of the 3DS games I own are the types of games designed to be played for extended periods. I'm not going to just pop open Zelda and play for three minutes and come away satisfied, for instance.

They both have their place as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not a fan of the Wii at all and I don't care about waggle, but there's a ton of great games on the Wii that appeal to people who don't care about that stuff. Lots of 2D platformers, for instance.

The wifi box is checked. When I unplug the phone it disappears from iTunes' device list, whereas on my old 4 it would stay there to allow for wifi syncing.

Apple's advice is to restart both iTunes and your iOS device. It worked for me.

Aside from being ~33% larger in both directions here, it's also nearly 225% thicker.

Which drugs are you on to even consider that the 3DS is an inherently pocketable device? I don't even see Nintendo claiming this.

I bought one in store yesterday here in NYC, I had to wait in line though.

Interesting. Very few appear to do anything though.

Yeah, I don't think too many Apps take advantage of it. I believe iMovie can continue to render in the background for example though.

I can't get over how much faster my 4S is than my iPad1. Really looking forward to iPad3 now.
FWIW: This is the case my 4S sits in:

It is extremely thin, protects the back from scratches, and as a bonus has a small kickstand that I will probably rarely use. It is plastic and has a slightly rubbery feel, but will not stick to the inside of a pocket.

I think my biggest beef is just the lack of buttons.

Terrible emulation aside, Sonic the Hedgehog is very playable on the iPhone, but without physical buttons the game just becomes a chore and unfun to play... not to mention your thumb covering up a lot of the oncoming screen area.

Yeah, I can't stand playing any game that requires a virtual D-Pad and buttons.

Let it never be said that AT&T's network can't be a joy under the right conditions. It's just too bad I've seen full bars less than three times in the 3 years I've had an iPhone.

I did a speed test here in Manhattan yesterday and I was getting about 7.75 up and 1.75 down, now on a monday afternoon I'm averaging about 1.4 up and 0.04 down...AT&T.

I don't even reach 1.0 download speed here in Manhattan. In my apartment, it doesn't work at all. My GF's verizon phone has full bars :(

The next iPod Touch will basically be an iPhone 4S without the phone, right? Any ideas when we should expect it?

Didn't they announce it at the iPhone 4S conference? I think it's using the A5 processor, but I remember hearing some disappointment about the camera, like it's still using the 4's camera, or something.

Sucks to be in NYC on AT&T I guess... keep doing speed tests and keep getting 4-6Mbit around my work.. which is probably where I use my phone for data most often.

Aside from just speed tests, the web is really snappy.. so it's "real world" performance not just speedtest.net servers. Neogaf browses like I'm on my LAN when I'm reading from the crapper via 3g ;)
