You know they didn't actually. Now that you mention it though, that's a perfect time for the sell. Weird.
I assume it was naked when it was dropped? In any case, with customer service like that apple will keep you doing business with them forever. :)

How good is the GPS though? Obviously it depends on where you are (?), but I'd worry about accuracy since sometimes the map shows me in a pretty large circle, sometimes several blocks from where I actually am. Is it "smart" - i.e. does it sort of figure out a path if it drops signal temporarily?

I already have the little sensor and pouch for my shoe, which works OK once you've calibrated it. But it would be nice to have a map...
With my 3GS it's pretty good. Sometimes it's "off" the road a little bit, and when I'm in a ravine it occasionally can't update and cuts a corner or two, but it's generally spot on. I'm in a big city, though, so results may vary.

Has anyone been able to get AppleCare+ (or whatever it's called) after the fact? I bought through Sprint and didn't get it, wondering if I can add it now.

I have an iPhone 4 and the GPS is amazingly accurate. It can determine which room of my parent's house I'm in, let alone properly track me on a hike. I can only assume the 4S is even better as it has newer GPS tech.

Hmm. My 4S's GPS isn't great. Right now it thinks I'm in the building next door. I wonder what would cause such a small but significant inaccuracy. Is there anything I can do to calibrate it? I wish I could stick a pin in the map and tell it that this is where I actually am.

OK, this isn't specifically 4S related, but this seems to be the main iOS thread now so perhaps you guys can help.

My sister bought a 3GS last year and, not having a computer, they set it up for her in the store on their computer, but now she wants to upgrade to iOS 5 (from iOS 3) but every time she connects it to a computer it wants to set it up as a new phone.

Losing apps and music isn't a problem as they can resync with iCloud but she doesn't want to lose her contacts and especially not her SMS messages.

Is there anyway we cam get this phone upgraded without losing everything?

Ok so apparently Siri DOES do voice turn-by-turn navigation!?

I was just talking to my sister, who got an iPhone 4 today and she was telling me about her friend and her playing with Siri over the weekend.

They went to a sushi restaurant but it was closed, so

Friend: Where is another sushi place nearby?
Siri: What price range?
Friend: Cheap

My sister said Siri then directed them to the nearest sushi place, saying things like "Turn left here" and if they stopped, "Keep moving forward."

Has anyone else tried this? Or was Siri possibly just reading the directions from Maps out loud? I didn't know Siri could do this :O

I would guess, like you, that it was just reading aloud the Maps direction list (which is still a welcome step up). but if you want to test it, take a wrong turn on purpose and see what it does. proper turn by turn will recalculate.

Even if that's all it's doing...isn't that all any turn by turn does? I don't get the difference. Haven't tested this, but I'm going to try.

Proper turn-by-turn will recalculate if you go awry.

I'm having a bit of a weird issue when it comes to podcasts.

I can listen to part of a podcast on itunes and when I disconnect my phone, my phone continues at the correct spot. I can then resync it and itunes will continue playing it at the new spot correctly. However if I try to sync it up again, my phone will only continue from the last part that it stopped at when I listened to it on the phone itself.

I know that is extremely confusing so let me lay it out step by step.

Download podcast on itunes
Play 5 minutes on itunes -> sync phone and disconnect -> phone continues at the 5 minute mark
Listen 5 more minutes on phone -> resync itunes -> itunes continues from the 10 minute mark
Listen 5 more minutes on itunes -> sync phone and disconnect -> phone continues from the 10 minute mark and I have to fast-forward another 5 minutes

Anybody run into a fix for this?

You can still add it. Just call up Sprint and ask them to add it to your bill, they'll activate Applecare+ for you.

1. In a text messaging window, how exactly can I scroll to the VERY top of the convo so I can see the very useful buttons of "Call", "FaceTime", and "Contact"? There were a couple times I was able to "shoot" right up to the very top, but I haven't been able to do it on purpose yet. I originally thought it was double-tapping on the name. Anyone know this trick?
Just single tap the top bar. It works on a multitude of apps, too. Browser, etc. You name it.

2. In the App Store, how can I view all the apps developed by a developer? In Android, this was really easy. Can't figure out how to do it in the App Store.
Unfortunately, I don't think that's possible on the phone. iTunes only. If you have automatic downloads for apps enabled on your phone, it's a very seamless experience, but yeah, you should be able to check that on the iphone itself.

3. So I figured out how to put ringtones on my phone (put the .m4r file in the Ringtones category of iTunes), but how do I put text tones? If they're in the Ringtones category in iTunes, they don't show up in the text tone selection screen
Text tones have a more strict time limit. Probably 30s, I'm not sure.

4. I have my iPhone syncing music the same way my iPod does (or at least it appears that way). But in the Music app, in the "Artists" category, it only lists the "Album Artists" tag. So if I have songs without an "Album Artists", that particular artists won't show up on my iPhone when browsing by artist. Why does it do this? My iPod doesn't do this, and I have them synced the same exact way as far as music goes. Maybe there's something I'm overlooking?
Not sure what's going on on that one.

5. Whenever I get a text message, it alerts me twice. To change this, I went to Settings>Notifications>Messages and made "Repeat Alert" read "Never." I still get two alert noises if I don't check a text I receive. Why is it doing this?
You sure that's not just the particular tone you have set? It doesn't happen to me. Mind you, the "Glass" tone (which I think it's the most used) is a double *ping* sound.

6. In Mail Settings, I have it set to show 500 Recent Messages, but when I open the Mail app and my inbox, it shows noticeably less. Why is this?
Check if you have set a limit time span for fetching emails on that particular email account settings. That's independent from the general number limit of messages.

Thanks a billion in advance, guys!

If you search for the developer under 'Search' you'll get the option of clicking it's name and see all the apps by that developer.

Still unimpressed with my battery, is this cause for concern?

Usage: 2hrs 46 minutes
Standby: 8hrs and 15 minutes

Battery is at 46%

I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue with the 4S or a software issue with iOS 5. On my 3GS, when I was listening to music or podcasts, an incoming text or e-mail would sound the chosen ringtone through my headphones, letting me know that something arrived even if the silent switch was on. With Siri, I was excited that I would be able to have these messages read to me instead of having to take the phone out of my pocket.

But for some reason, with my 4S I never hear a chime when a text or e-mail comes - I was streaming the latest ThisIsMyNext podcast on the bus the other day, and when I took the phone out of my pocket to open the browser, I saw that I had 5 new e-mails and a couple text messages. I upgraded my 3GS to iOS 5, but the battery is dead so I can't test it at the moment. Why doesn't it make a sound anymore? Do I need to turn off the silent switch now?

Can I ask what you use to hold your iphone while running? I've been looking online but most armbands are poorly rated. Armband or waistband or anything really.

That's pretty normal. My iPhone 4's battery took a month to break in, at which point I could eke out 20% more life

Sweet!

Okay, that still works. At least there's an option.

I have ringtones that are set to be only 1-5 seconds as text tones, and they still don't show up in my text tone selection :(

Actally, I figured out this one on my own! :)

Yeah, I'm sure it's not the tone. I'm not using the glass one either. It's literally about a minute later. It will alert me as if I got a new text, but it will be the same text (if I haven't checked it officially). I know this because I see the same text being displayed on the lock screen when I get it.

Check if you have set a limit time span for fetching emails on that particular email account settings. That's independent from the general number limit of messages.

Will do! But I AM using an Exchange protocol to sync with Gmail. Maybe that changes things.

^ That's awesome.

Also awesome: Graft just emailed me to say my Leverage cases shipped. I ordered yesterday, so although they're not advertising it on their website, they clearly have stock. Skipping the 2-4 week wait time feels good!

What was the answer? I have this problem, too, and I don't quite understand why it is doing that...

edit: Also, how do I get the camera to show up on the lock screen? It accidentally appeared once and I have no idea why.

sorry but iPhone 1st gen and iPhone 3G were never that blurry (in the closeup comparison
I think they were when trying to get in focus that close. I see to remember that was a big improvement in later models with the tap to focus.

So I have my 4S, but I'm a little underwhelmed by it all. The response/refresh of the retina is quite noticeable compared to the 3GS LCD (especially with white-on-black text/graphics) and there aren't a great enough mass of features for me to be truly impressed.

It's a new phone and I'm happy and all that, but real "wow" factor just hasn't been there for me. Should probably have sprung for a 64gb as well, but once I clean all my unwanted music/apps I should be cool.

So, name one or two apps I should buy that will truly sell me on the new screen (and 4S in general). Mirror's Edge looks incredible, but there must be more!

To get the camera on the lock screen, double click the Home button. It also displays music player controls!

And what I did to fix it was I went Settings>Music and switched "Group By Album Artist" to "off"

I also figured out my text tone issue. It was my own incompetence.....I....I didn't scroll down far enough -_-

But to be fair it's organized differently that the ringer category! Hrmph.

If I'm not mistaken, but I think the 3Gs was the first iPhone with an auto-focusing lens?

Yes they were, it was terrible at closeups/macro shots because there was no focusing lens until 3GS.

I'm 99% sure that barcode scanning apps like Red Laser don't support the original iPhones, because the camera sucked for that kind of stuff.

Is it common to get dust in the lens? Some appeared in mine today and I'm thinking it's probably inevitable at some point.

You shouldn't need any particular app to be impressed with the iPhone 4 screen compared to the 3GS. Literally anything should be a day and night difference.

What were you expecting that you didn't get? The iPhone 4S has:

- as mentioned, the screen is just far superior in every way possible.
- aesthetically the 4S is an improvement in every way.
- better camera with 1080p video recording
- Siri (though it is underwhelming for us aussies)
- louder speaker
- general use should be a lot snappier and of course games will look/perform in a much higher level.

Apps you can try - Rage, Real Racing 2, Infinity Blade, Dungeon Hunter, Dead Space, Pinball HD, NBA Jam, Death Rally

I'm guessing you were pretty underwhelmed upgrading from an SDTV to HDTV.

I couldn't have been more surprised when that email showed up this afternoon. Cutting the wait time pleasently mitigates the irritating $30 Canadian shipping charge too. I was all prepared to settle in for a month long wait, but I guess it'll be here in a week or so, depending on customs. I'd love to know what kind of demand Graft have had since the 4S was announced, and how many extra cases they have in stock on top of the ones earmarked for outstanding orders. I think I got really lucky, given that they're not advertising the extra stock on their site or even their Twitter feed.

Anyone with the iskin claro mind posting a couple pictures of your phone with it on?? I am curious about the case and cant find many good pics of it.

My previous reply got lost on the previous page it seems, you can keyword search developer names in the Search tab on the phone as well to see all apps/games from a developer. They'll be sorted above the apps that happen to be called similarly to the developer name in the results.

Tweeted a pic as an example: http://t.co/8doeVKNX

My SDTV was a CRT and didn't have motion blur. My LCD did... so yeah, I was a little underwhelmed with it.

All excellent points, but the aforementioned screen niggle was a bit of a reality check (I went in expecting perfect, but I picked up on that straight away, unfortunately) and Siri is nowhere near as useful here as it seems to be for the US folk. "Where am I?" "Sorry, you need to be in the United States and be using US English for that to work." - Such a shit (and now, all too frequent) response. I've never been a big phone camera guy so that wouldn't really be an instant wow factor for me regardless of how good it is, though I'm sure it'll gradually get more use as I actually realise it's there. Snappiness and speed is also awesome but not a stellar improvement from the games I used to play or the OS (full credit to Apple for keeping it usable on the GS) but I kinda miss the random slowdown that I no longer get in DoDonPachi ;)

It IS a damn fine phone, don't get me wrong... but just not the ZOMG AMASING leap I was expecting. I know down the track it'll become apparent just how good it is, but that's not what I'm feeling now.

Thanks for the tips on games, too. I had no idea Death Rally (the id game?) was out and had bought Rage and Dead Space on the 3GS. Nixed them due to space concerns but I'll put them back on.

Been watching them Iphone 4S drop test videos on youtube and just wow...

Rocking the switcheasy vulcan case makes me worry less about the fragile glass breaking when dropped.

This.
Hopefully now that everyone and their mom has a white iPhone, more manufacturers will release more/better clear cases.

Bluetooth headsets recommendations, anyone? I got one with the iPhone 4S because of Siri. Siri sucks but the headset has been a revelatory experience listening to podcasts and TweetSpeaker. The headset I picked was the Jabra Stone 2:

Pros:
  • doesn't look like a bluetooth headset
  • comes with a useful portable charger
Cons:
  • doesn't have multimedia control buttons (play/pause, rewind, fastforward). I planned to use Siri but that's cumbersome and doesn't work properly with third party apps anyway.
  • battery life is short. The headset is rated for 10hrs but that's by having to place the Jabra on the Stone every 2hrs or so for a quick recharge in 20 mins. I can't get through an episode of Tested without headset dying on me.

I want to get a better headset. Any suggestions?

Surprisingly, my white Opena looks really good with the rest of my white iPhone. I'm honestly really impressed with it, so much so I'll leave it on there, despite its weight.
