iPhone 4S |OT|

So I took the 4S out for some serious picture taking for the first time last night at the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval, and I came away happy with the overall result. Considering the vast majority of pictures were taken in abysmal photography conditions (very dark, people moving, unstable base), the phone seemed to handle itself pretty well as a camera. If you want to see the full album of 130 pics, click here.

Here are some samples of the pics from last night. Keep in mind, these conditions are about as bad as it can get for a camera, particularly a smartphone, and the camera's flash was used for 98% of the pics.

One of the quirks of the camera (shown in the last photo) is the flash sometimes leaves a brown haze towards the bottom of the picture. Is there a way to prevent the chances of this from happening? Or workarounds to avoid it?

so, while not an iPhone 4S, my iPhone 4 keeps on telling me every time I try to sync it to my PC that I am exactly 43.2MB over the capacity limit. I've attempted to remove over 1.5GB of apps through iTunes and I still am receiving this error.

Anyone else have anything similar happen, or have any thoughts as to how to fix this or what is going on? Thanks.

Anyone else having issues with Sprint/Apple giving you your purchased AppleCare+? Checking my warranty at apple.come shows me with just the standard warranty, even though I purchased AppleCare+ from Sprint when I ordered my 4S. My invoice from Sprint lists AppleCare+ as "backordered" somehow and when I contacted them about it they said everything was fine and registration occurred automatically.

So I contacted Apple explaining the situation and provided my proof that I purchased it (my invoice from Sprint). They replied telling me they need my AppleCare Protection Plan enrollment number (registration number), even though I told them I never received one. They replied back, again saying they need the registration number.

I told them I don't have it and never received one and they have yet to reply back to me. I guess I'll wait another day and then contact Sprint about it again, hoping they can somehow send me whatever registration number they have attached to my account saying I purchased it.

I checked earlier today to see if somehow, my eligibility might have been moved up from November 16th. Was expecting the same answer I received before, but lo and behold, it shows I'm fully eligible!

I then called around local stores, and my local Best Buy had some White 32GB models left. I ran up there, and they had 2 left. Me and my fiance took the last two phones in stock.

Already used Siri a lot today, I could see this getting addicting.

First of all go into settings and turn everything off. Do this as fast as possible.

Once you've done that, it's time to break in the battery and warm up the screen to prevent damaged pixels. Set the brightness to full, then loop a 240p video. Anything above 240p will cause milked pixels and screen weeping if played for the duration of the warming process this early in the screen's life. Zoom the video so there are no black bars, then place the phone face down (that's important, due to the ambient light sensor) somewhere warm and dry. Leave it there until the battery runs down, but don't touch it until at least 17 hours after that.

Your screen will now exhibit more resilient colours, and your battery should last 18% longer than normal.

Lucky bastard.

Today they also moved my eligibility up (by a whole DAY!), but there isn't a store within a hundred miles with the phone in stock for AT&T. So I had to order online and will have to wait two to four weeks for my new phone.

Oh well. I was just really excited to have the phone.

I like this never typing on my phone thing. It's pretty awesome.

Ok, now I'm worried.

You might want to try Best Buy. when I went up there to get mine earlier tonight the guy said that they would be getting them every week.

Hmm. I already placed the order. I guess I'll check with them again later in the week, and if they have it in before my order has shipped I'll try to cancel it (will they let me, I wonder). Otherwise, it's no big deal. Just a phone.

Another night, another major battery drain. 20% to absolutely dead when I woke up. I slept only 5 hours.

Going to the apple store to get a replacement today. Though, im quite sure this is a software issue rather than a hardware one. I still gotta try and see if swapping phones will help.

I had the same issue with my iPhone 3G. It was software, but I also did a swap.

the native gmail client is a piece of giant CRAP! it is the app showing the web interface. a giant piece of useless crap by Google. seriously. I can do this on my browser. the push notification on iPhone is much better than this crap

GarageBand released for iphone today. Bout to check it out for the first time :p

I like it so far, but I need to watch a tutorial or something... I've never owned an iPad or used the Mac version much. That's one thing I liked about the iOs iWork apps: they had a good opening tutorial.

Also, I'm annoyed that the app seems to immediately shut out my bluetooth headphones.

I just tried the native Gmail app. I got some weird error when booting it up, but otherwise I couldn't tell if there was a difference between it and the web app.

I didn't see any options for push notification. Also, there was a nice button on the Android interface that let you quickly delete the text you were replying to. I hoped this app would have that functionality, too.

So I can't seem to find anyone else mentioning this, but literally every time I try to use Siri after the phone has been in stand-by for a little while, it doesn't connect to the network the first time. And then it works perfectly on the second try and any time after. I'm pretty sure this has been the case since I first got the phone almost two weeks ago.

Everything else works fine coming out of standby except for Siri, and Siri only ever craps out if I'm coming out of standby (or if there's a major network problem). I can't decide whether it's worth bothering to bring in to the Apple Store for, but it's kind of annoying to repeat the first thing I ask twice, every time.

Has anyone else noticed this on their phone?

Looks like it's been pulled.

It was pretty much garbage and only effective for plaintext emails. The app didn't automatically scale the width of tables within emails so it was impossible to use.

My 4s isn't turning on:( I got off a phone call and put it on my bed and now it wont turn on.

Tried holding the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously for awhile? That's the hard reset combination. If your phone has any kind of juice, that should do SOMETHING.

Also, leave it plugged in for awhile and see if it comes back to life after a half hour. When it's at the absolute end of it's battery I've seen the screen not even show the charging indicator/screen for a bit.

...if that doesn't do anything, Apple Store time.

same thing happened to me on sunday when my battery power was at 100%. just give it some time, plug it back in and press and hold different combinations of buttons and it'll eventually come back on.

Thank you, the hard reset worked. This is my first iPhone so now I know what to do. Really scared me as these things are still in back order and I thought I'd be waiting awhile to get a replacement.

thanks again:D

No need to worry on that score. The Apple Store has a bunch set aside to swap out with customers who end up with defective phones.

In other news, my Graft Leverage cases arrived today. Anyone who's read this thread on MacRumors will understand why I'm shipping them straight back (tl;dr: the clasp scratches the antenna band and the soft-touch rubberized finish chips off), but I have a few additional thoughts for those interested.

First of all, I like the case. It really is the most aesthetically pleasing bumper I've yet seen. The soft-touch finish feels fantastic, and the latch looks extremely slick. Some have said that it looks underwhelming compared to the promo photos; I disagree. Visually, it's a fantastic case.

I've read some users complain that the small pin that hinges the outermost joint of the clasp has been improperly installed on their cases, so it extends slightly on one side. I didn't check out both of the cases I ordered, but one of them certainly has this problem. It's almost imperceptible, but I'm sure it would catch on the lining of my pockets. If I wasn't returning it for other reasons I'd live with it, but it's not something I'd expect to see on a $60 case.

If Graft can sort out the build quality, subsequent iterations of the Leverage will be very impressive. It's a real shame the first run of cases have so many problems.

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/11/02/apple-posts-ios-5-0-1-beta-for-developers/

iOS 5.0.1 beta contains improvements and other bug fixes including:
- Fixes bugs affecting battery life
- Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
- Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
- Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
- Contains security improvements

iOS 5.0.1 beta introduces a new way for developers to specify files that should remain on device, even in low storage situations.

Apple said:
A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices. We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.”

was added after the blowback from that Marco Arment post.

also nice to see iPad 1 get the multitasking gestures

Lots of people were pissed about that, which makes me wonder if it was just an overlook by Apple or if they decided to turn it on now.
Check the iPad thread. ;)

I think it's a situation just like the Mute/Orientation lock switch. Enough feedback and they'll throw a bone.

I want Canadian Siri to launch soon :(

It's funny how she can't even tell me the time. "YOU ARE APPARANTLY LOCATED IN THE NO MAN'S LAND OF AMERICA'S HAT AND I KNOW JACK SHIT ABOUT IT! CANT TELL YOU THE TIME THERE, OR FUCK ALL REALLY."

But if you say "What time is it in Vancouver", then she's little miss international timezone expert.

it's nice that ipad 1 gets multi touch gestures is nice but doing the gestures i feel they are pretty shitty. You know how webos does the swipe from the edge of the screen for multi tasking. How about that app switching instead of four finger swipe.

I haven't had extensive use of the multitasking gestures, having an iPad 1 - I have heard arguments for and against (i.e. being a little easy to accidentally use, ruins apps that use four-fingers, etc).

Personally, I'm looking forward to them, just because it's totally analogous to the way I've set up Lion, with 4-fingers left/right to "app switch" full screens, 4-fingers up to access Mission control/multitasking, and 4-finger pinch to got to home/launchpad.

That parallel seems like it would be logical, but only time will tell if I end up just finding them annoying.

And dear god, please fix the music app on iPad.

In 5.0 Apple changed how application cache data was handled, in that application cache files would get purged in low storage situations, which had a big effect on apps that needed to store data that shouldn't necessarily be backed up, like Instapaper, comic book apps, etc. The only current place to put such data was in the Application's cache folder, ad the Apps doc folder gets backed up.

Where is my 2x? Where is the 30 second rewind? Weren't there ways to download more episodes? And email the podcast to others?

God, it sucks. And I listen to podcasts more than navigating other things, and you can't even edit the buttons to your liking, with Podcasts hidden in the 'more' menu.

I mostly just stream podcasts on my iPad via airplay (on the go is handled via iPhone), but most of the features are just plain missing. I might turn to my iPhone more and more.

I have confidence that it's a work in progress though, so it will be dealt with. Eventually.

Instacast. Best 1.99 you'll spend if you like to regularly listen to podcasts.

(or one of the other dedicated podcast apps)

Hit more, then edit. Drag podcast down to the task bar at the bottom. You gave to drag it on top of the icon you want to replace

I made the terrible mistake of syncing my apps with my home computer when I first got the phone. Is there any way to turn this off without deleting all of the apps on my iPhone?

How can you download older podcast episodes with instacast? I only see the stream option. I want to download a bunch of older episodes on wi-fi so I can listen to them in the car with instacast.

The third button from the left on the bottom of the episode pane.
