iPhone 4S |OT|

I have this really weird issue on my 4S, not a super big deal but still annoys me slightly. Once in a while and completely randomly across any app, I'll get a single black pixel that runs across my screen diagonally from the top to the bottom. I'm not sure what's causing it, because like I said, it's very random and seems to do it on any app that invokes the keyboard.

Anyone?

Got my new phone from Asurion. It ended up being brand new and they also threw in a car charger as well. Still sucks that I had to spend $200 on a phone that got stolen, but things could be worse. I had to use my roomates old cracked Samsung Galaxy and it feels amazing to have a 4s back in my hands =]

Would toggling notification center functionality on/off be turning "push" on/off? I assumed that these settings were related to the displaying of notifications from pushed/fetched data, and were unrelated to push being enabled for an app or not.

The only place push is mentioned, as far as i've seen, is under Mail, contacts, etc.

Hmm, I'll have to defer to others in this thread. I don't have an iOS device anymore and when I did it didn't have iOS5 (so no notification center). I wasn't aware options got merged into that (I assume that's what happened).

If you don't get an answer soon I would just try to test it out on an app you can trigger notifications on yourself and see what happens if you disable it in the notification center settings. But I bet you're right, it probably just won't show there at all.

For some reason my 4S keeps losing its wifi connection every 2-3 mins. I have to turn wifi off and back on to get it to work again, and then lose the connection in a matter of minutes. I have not changed the settings on my router, it started doing this yesterday. Every other wifi connected device does not have this problem. I have no clue what could be the cause of this.

Aside from built in OS apps, such as mail, notification center IS push. Push notifications are the only types of push a third party app can get. I think.

Completely random thought:

Do you have a dual-band router and all your other devices are connected to the N network and the iPhone is on the G network?

Also, do you love in a densely populated area like an apartment complex or townhouse community?

Thinking it may be interference introduced by some other tech product or a neighbor clobbering it.

It's a DVW3200, I googled to see if it was dual-band, but didn't have much luck, sorry. I'm quite sure the g band isn't getting clogged up, I only pick up three wifi access points from this location.

Is there an official iPod thread? Whatever, I'll ask my question here anyway.

Why didn't Apple update the iPod Touch specs last year? I use an iPod Touch sometimes and apps constantly crash or the device generally seems slow. On top of all of this the battery life is not that great either. At times it seems like the device is too thin for it's own good because the formfactor sacrifices space for a larger battery and doesn't feel as good in the hands as an iPhone 4S does. I don't know, does anyone else with an iPod Touch experience the same issues?
The iPod Touch 4th gen has 256 MB of RAM. The iPhone 4 & 4S, and the iPad 2, have 512MB of RAM. There are other problems with iPod Touch but the small amount of RAM is the biggest reason why it seems so slow and apps constantly crash. It was a problem on iOS4 and iOS 5 is even more tasking.
I would assume it's an issue of no competition in that market, and the further push for people to get iPhones, as they are the same price anyway (I bought an iphone over an ipod for that reason).

It also might have to deal with iOS 5.
Actually the competition is gearing up (although not from the PMP manufacturers as initially expected). The Nintendo 3DS got a price drop last summer to significantly below the price of an iPod Touch. The Kindle Fire was announced for $200. Those are the true competitors for the iPod Touch, not some shitty Android galaxy player. Apple gave the entry level iPod Touch a price drop as well to $200. Since then other competitors, like the B&N Nooks and the PS Vita have entered into the mix. Apple doesn't want to reduce their margins by packing more features into a cheaper iPod Touch.

Can anyone explain to me why my iPhone 4S battery is so bad? Will iOS 5.1 fix this?

I remember iPhone 4 having insanely good battery life, I almost wish I never upgraded.

I believe that several people have said that their battery life has indeed improved somewhat. It was in this thread as well, I don't remember who said that I'm sorry.

Anyway:

From the beginning I keep reading that when the screen is on, you can use Siri by holding the phone to your ear, and give instructions. I have this option turned on, but it doesn't seem to work. Am I doing it wrong? Forgetting something?

EDIT: and as usual when you ask for help, you don't need it anymore. It seems that you have to raise the the phone to your ear somewhat quickly, then speak. Nice little touch.

My iPhone case from Dealextreme finally came in and the wait was soo worth it! Such a freaking nice case. Showed my sister and she immediately wanted me to order a similar one for her 3GS and the same one for her BFs 4S.

Is there any way to restore individual app data? Is it really all or nothing when it comes to restoring app data from iCloud or iTunes?

It seems ridiculous to me that I can't save my progress in a game for example and back that data up so I can safely delete the app without worrying that I'll lose all the progress I made should I decide to re-install it at a later date.

Use iExplorer and find the save data and u can back it up with dropbox or jailbreak ur phone and use data deposit. I use the latter myself.

The option is there for iCloud saving where you can delete the app and the save data is still in the cloud but only if the developer chooses to do it this way. The only app that I have that does this so far is League of Evil 2.

I wonder how many people will just think that something magical just happened with their phone.
I know someone has at least asked me once, "If your phone is the new one why does it still say 3G up there?"

Weird, so you peel up the entire unlock screen to reveal the camera UI underneath it. Its neat but I'd prefer to just press the camera button.
it strikes me as particularly inelegant.

Weird. So it's like "Slide vertically to unlock camera"?

a single button could be tapped accidentally.

and you’re not slowly sliding the whole lock screen up. i just tested it. it’s a super quick flick up from the bottom of the screen. you don’t need to hold directly on the camera icon. the hit target to start the gesture is huge and extends to the bottom edge of the screen.

It's just weird and janky looking. It's perfectly functional.

As the whole tech world waits for today's Apple Event, it seems like a good time to remind both veteran and amateur jailbreakers about the fundamental rule of jailbreaking: Avoid firmware updates!

In all likelihood we'll see the GM "gold master" version of 5.1 this week. DO NOT UPDATE TO 5.1, because you may lose your jailbreak! The rest of this post details the subtleties with this rule, but if there's only one message to take home, it's the overall "do not update" message! Now for the nitty gritty exceptions:

  • Soon after 5.1 appears on Apple's public servers (i.e. iTunes starts to offer it), Apple will stop signing 5.0.1 SHSH blobs.
  • If you have an iPhone4S, the basic rule above is really the only rule: you cannot restore back to 5.0.1 once the 5.0.1 signing window is closed, no matter what (even if you saved your SHSH blobs).
  • If you have an iPad2 with saved 4.x hashes, you can in fact downgrade to that 4.x but you won't be able to get to 5.0.1 once the 5.0.1 signing window is closed (even if you saved your 5.0.1 SHSH blobs).
  • If you have a device earlier than the iPad2, you can downgrade to whatever version you want, as long as you have saved SHSH blobs for that version. You'll need the assistance of geohot's limera1n exploit with tools like redsn0w to get into "pwned DFU mode" and bypass the downgrade restriction.

As you can see, it really is a nuanced landscape so it's sometimes hard to drive the message home to new jailbreakers. But the basic rule is the simplest (and it's better to be safe than sorry!): If you update to 5.1 you'll very likely lose your jailbreak, so don't do it! Exceptions are noted above.

Last chance to join us in the jailbreak thread folks. Come one, come all.

So far, the keyboard seems to feel better typing-wise on 5.1. I'm not making as many mistakes as before when looking directly at the keys; same goes for when not looking at the keys.

Time will tell though.

Why can't I update my apps? Everytime I try to, a message pops up saying the apple terms of service policy has change and I have to accept it, but when I click okay, the terms of service dont ever load?

Anybody update to 5.1? I just read that the AT&T 4S shows 4G now instead of 3G LOL. How much did AT&T pay Apple for that?

Not so fast...literally

Ever since T-Mobile and AT&T began touting their HSPA+ networks as "4G," the debate on the term's legitimacy has raged on. Regardless of how you feel about the matter, one thing's for sure: Apple's finally taken sides on the argument, and the company's all for it. In today's iOS update, Cupertino features an "updated AT&T network indicator," which means you'll see a 4G icon whenever you're in HSPA+ coverage. Granted, this doesn't actually mean you'll enjoy faster speeds -- you'll just have a warm and fuzzy feeling knowing that another G just got added to your screen. Such an action makes us wonder if Apple's slowly losing its ability to stand up against AT&T's wishes, not to mention the demands of other US carriers.

Really? Here's the problem:

Pressing the home button twice to pop up the button is unreliable sometimes, and not as fast for some people as just sliding the unlock and tapping the camera.

Why not just leave the button there all the time then? Well the problem there is that the button takes up an equal amount of width space as it does hight, thus shrinking the slide to unlock bar. You may remember that when you used to double tap the home button, the text in the slider bar would read "unlock" rather than "slide to unlock". This is because they had no space to fit in the full dialog.

Now however, they can make it a thin placement rather than a square, since it doesn't near to be a button. This lets the slide to unlock bar stay decently long enough to fit in the dialog as well as stay focal.

It's all around a much better, and intuitive decision. I think once people get a hang of the slide up gesture/feature it'll actually be super useful, unlike the camera button that required a double-tap of the home button.

That's not a bad explanation sentry but gripe isnt really with the gesture, it's with peeling up the entire homescreen. The animation itself is ugly and off putting.

Admittedly I haven't seen it in motion yet, but I just assume it slides the whole screen up ala notification center (but in the opposite direction). I personally love this gesture and use it with Zephyr for my JB'd i4.

You kind of made me think it was a literal peeling graphic like the maps or ibooks style, but I youtube'd it and it's exactly as expected. I'm kinda compelled to lose my jailbroken status just to upgrade.

Sigh I'm going to give up updating today, been trying for a while and it never finishes connecting through iTunes, I get the "unable to check for update" error on the phone and I can't seem to download the ipsw directly from the apple server either. Shame, I had no problems updating to 5.0.1 and I did as soon as it went up.

Odd, first try and it is downloading just fine on my phone. About to finish.

Funny. I feel the same, but I was wondering if this could be a pure psychological imagination thing or something. :)

I also like how you can pull down ala like the notification center and bring back the lock screen.

Nice observation!
