YES, SUCCESS!

Crossed my fingers, and updated to 3.0 on an unlocked 2G phone (Rogers). Went without a hitch. Seems snappier, and didnt break the unlock or anything. Gonna go check it out now.

the only thing i'm worried about is the "testing mode" it forces your phone into

That is a miss understanding.

The gm software is designed to be released to devs with test iphones. Phones in locked test mode. But its still the full firmware and if installed on a regular iphone will work.

The is no test mode.

I updated my phone like any other update. Works great

Do it. Its no biggie. My phone works just fine. Love the sms landscape. And the whole thing just seems a lil smoother. I dunno. I like it though. :D

Found this while researching the 3.0 GM...

This version of iPhone OS 3.0 should only be deployed on devices dedicated for iPhone OS 3.0 GM Seed software development. By installing iPhone OS 3.0 GM Seed software on your Authorized Test Devices, these Devices are permanently “locked” into testing mode and cannot be restored to an earlier release of iPhone OS. Bear this in mind before installing the software.

Notice the comma. Meaning the rest of the sentence is describing the "Test Devices" not the firmware.

So this firmware is designed for those phones. But its basically the firmware and nothing else.

Next owner after owner keeps installing it and reporting success , like say ME.

Or we could just spread more false info.

look in your settings - can you log things like the accelerometer?

remember, if true you will have a hard time upgrading to the regular 3.0 release in 8 days

DopeyFish said:

No.

One more damn time.

The GM firmware is 3.0 and nothing else. Its released to devs so they can verify their apps work before the official launch.

Its the same firmware every one will download on the 17th or what ever. THE SAME FIRMWARE

It works great. Itunes even thanks you once done. Damn what else can I say. GM is the full and final version of 3.0 If you want it early go ahead. Or wait. But get it thru all of you guys skulls. GM is 3.0 and nothing else.

Easily the most annoying part of GAF... the condescending and crass Apple assholes.

Which I am not. Infact I own a zune and no itune songs. I own 3 pcs running windows. I can not wait to get windows 7. I own no other apple products. I just love the iphone. Next you called me out like some idiot when explaining the firmware is good to go and you fail to even comprehend a simple comma.

Sorry I am some elite for reading properly.

Must suck being wrong 2 straight posts :lol

It amazes me that some people are willing to risk even a slim chance of permanently fucking their phone just to get a few features a week early :lol

Yet, the reward is unbridled excitement, satisfaction, and accomplishment- what I'm feeling right now @ 2 am after installing 3.0

I know right. Imagine how we would have felt had the update bricked our phones though :lol

False. After you update it even tells you you might have to update again on the 17th in Itunes.

It was the same way for 2.0 from what I understand from friends. Just trying to kill the false info.

So using this firmware on a normal iPhone, you could still downgrade if you wanted to then?

if anyone cares, Gizmodo did a hands on video of the 3gs but they took it down 5 minutes later.

In the video they compared how the 3g, 3gs and the palm pre loaded gizmodo.com over the cell phone data connection.

I cant remember the exact times but it went something like this

3GS: 37 seconds
Pre: 56 seconds
3G: 58 seconds

edit: they also forgot to take down this gallery
http://i.gizmodo.com/photogallery/iphone3GSwwdc

I still think that's a little slow if you've been using an iPhone on Japan's superior cellphone networks. Mine loaded in about 20 seconds, and I'm not what's technically Japan's worst network.

I don't care whether you own Apple products or not, but the tone and tenor of your posts reflect the classic behavior of an Apple elitist.

But perhaps I was wrong, I should have just called you an asshole instead of prefacing it with an "Apple" in the beginning. For that, please accept my most humble and sincerest apologies...

No. You can not downgrade out of the 3.0 GM. Only upgrade. So if you go from 2.1 to 3.0 you can not go back to 2.1. Same if your in the beat from what I understand.

But why would you :lol

You judge me. Good for you.

My tone is that of some one explaining to other users the same thing over and over again. Than some one adding no usefull info, you, posts a paragraph on the info and fails to read a comma.

Adding more confusion. After tons of us gaffers have updated with great success and trying to explain that.

What would you call yourself if I am a asshole? I think the correct term is a fool. And your arguing over it adds to your foolishness. A simple my bad would have saved you lots of face. :D

And would like to add you never apologized nor commented on the fact you miss read the paragraph on the firmware. Just found that funny.

Just in case I wanted to unlock or jailbreak my phone if for some reason they don't find a way to do it in 3.0.

I know nothing on jailbroken or unlocked iphones when it comes to 3.0 gm sorry.

That some one else will have to help with :D

What the hell? Does anyone actually have the 'show battery percentage' in the usage menu? I don't. Did this not make the 3.0 cut??

Here is what mine says

"Time since last full Charge"

Usage 5 minutes
standby 38 minutes

Not sure what your looking for. :D

soooo the NEW iphone looks exactly the same as the 3g one that we are using now??

wtf!!

questions:
when will I be able to buy the new Iphone here in sweden?
the 3G one had to be bought with a Contract..how will apple launch this NEW model?

will there be a THINNER model of Iphone coming out or is this 3gs the model we will get this summer?

when will 3.0 be launched?

3.0 is launched next wednesday.
No idea about contracts in sweden, but don't expect another iPhone revision until a year from now.

It will be available in Sweden a week after the 19th June, so the 26th.
No there will not be a thinner iPhone this summer, this is the new iPhone for the summer.

And yes it looks the same, but is internally different.

People who have upgraded already and were jailbroken: did your jailbreaks stay (or is there a new version of QuickPwn for 3.0 yet)? I'd hate to lose my Categories...

last year they let us upgrade at regular 2-year-contract price (though that was only because the first phone wasn't subsidized).

still, i've had AT&T for a loooong time and service is fine here, so i would be ok with EXTENDING my contract 2 more years (3 total) if it meant getting the 3GS for $199 next week -_-

oh well, I might just open a new line and waste $10/month

robertsan21 said:
haha nooo that cant be correct...that would fuck up sales for the new 3GS bigtime wouldnt it?

You can buy it without a contract from Telia or Telenor for around 7000:-. Cheap huh? That's what I'm gonna do though, if I'm getting one.

dont do this!! $10*24months= $240
first go here and see the price you have to pay. https://buyiphone.apple.com/WebObjects/IPACustomer.woa/
Worst case scenario just pay the early termination fee to get out of contract and pay 199 or the just pay the increased price

wow apple are fucking us over bigtime, they obviously dont give a shit about the people that OWN a iPhone already and had to get a contract to get the phone!

they want to charge me $599 to upgrade now. FUCK THAT.

If I open a new line I'll just cancel the current one when it runs out next year. I'd be spending an extra $120 over the course of a year. Not a big deal IMO.

I thought you couldn't do this on the iPhone? They force you to have a data plan ($30) with each phone or something (at least from my understanding). I might do the same if that's possible.

so that web site told me i need to pay full price... but.... i have an iphone 2g, why would i need to my contract is basically up, i bought it on launch day.

robertsan21 said:

Nope, it is correct. If you want to upgrade, you have to pay something like $600 for it.

Straight from the horse's mouth:

For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB).

http://www.apple.com/iphone/buy/

wait, whaat. So i have to buy it at FULL price, even though i have a 2g and the contract is up?! So $199 is only to absolutely new customers?!

Yeah dude, it's because we already have an iPhone.

Yeah or customers who had the first iPhone whose contracts should be up by now. Straight from the website as I posted above ^.
