Contract ending != upgrade eligibility.

Unlike what I recall of Verizon, you're upgrade eligible sooner than 2 years if you're a high roller. If you're a big spender like Phoenix, you probably become upgrade eligible every 12 months. If you're a penny pincher like me, you're waiting 18-24 months.

They have a little tool to determine your date. Just try to upgrade on AT&T's web site and they'll tell you what you qualify for.

Yea my eligibility date is August 18....I feel like I'm about to get screwed into an iPhone-less summer.

Welcome to last year! Now imaging people in Apple stores the world over having to stand in line because the activation servers were being pounded to shit and you couldn't walk out of the Apple store without activating.

Are they going to do the "activate it in-store" b.s. stuff again on Friday? If so I think I'll pass on picking up the 3GS on Friday. No need to go through that again.

aparisi2274 said:
Another thing I asked is if they are going to activate it there at the store, and she said yes. So I wonder if home iTunes activation will work.

Ugh, that crap again? I'm sure it will be a comedy of errors once again.

Well the business problem would be limiting features to newer hardware, when most of the updates are purely software upgrades, thus strong arming people into paying for the new phone instead of offering the new software as a payable upgrade. I'd pay $50 for the battery percentage, MMS, etc.

Then there's the whole AT&T tethering fiasco, cock-blocking 3G owners when they wanted to buy the 3Gs, etc. (I know they retracted it, but these are all poor decisions). The main revolution the iPhone has made, beyond the magnificent UI is the software, e.g.: the App Store.

So they're squeezing the lemon at both ends.

Yeah, If AT&T customers don't like what's going on they should just make like a tree and get outta here!

I know, I know...bitch bitch. :lol

I'm fine with buying a new phone, it's the monthly rate that is particularly financially troublesome, especially when I'm self-financing grad school which makes things difficult. But I need a sexy phone for work, so I guess I'l stick with my EDGE for awhile longer until I can put some more 00s in that bank account of mine.

:lol, no. It means you ARE immediately eligible. Anyone whose eligibility date is through September 2009 was announced today to also be eligible on Friday (and presumably thereafter) for the 3G S.

I don't know why, but I am anxiously awaiting for some event to happen in the world so AP News sends me my first app push notification. :lol

Ugly, ugly, ugly app. Absolutely terrible. Even if they alerted me to news, I wouldn't want to view it in their app.

still no ship yet

and ordered it the 8th

what the fuck

also i noticed alot of people having mms working for like 30 min then no more. mines been working for 2 days, hooray

Question: Will the 3G S allow you to share video via YouTube and flag it as a private video at upload time? I'd hate to have to go to the YouTube website after the fact and mark my personal/family videos as private later.

Everyone remember this question and then answer it for me on Friday.

So I heard that tethering is free on Rogers if you have a data plan that's 1gig+ per month. Is that true?
One of the few perks Rogers ever gives us, but yes, this is correct.

*waits for new version of PwnageTool for his original iPhone*

Will do. :D

I hope everything goes smoothly on Friday. Anyone camping out?

It was awesome till the last update. Now the scrolling reading news articles isn't smooth anymore, it is kind of jerky. I still think it is the best news app out there though so I will continue to use it.

Ok...so I began installing 3.0 and I've run into a problem. It downloaded fine but I got an error while it installed and now I'm stuck. My iPhone shows the USB with an arrow and the iTunes icon on its screen. I pulled the USB after the error in iTunes earlier and closed iTunes. Now when I start up iTunes with the iPhone plugged in it tells me it can't communicate and there's an error. Trying to restart with the power and home button isn't working, it still goes back to this same usb/arrow/itunes icon screen.

Help :(

Update to 8.2

So I'm having problems with this. I had the 3.0 GM installed on my iPod Touch 2G and wanted to switch over to the public 3.0 release. I managed to download the 3.0 firmware through iTunes but it got stuck halfway when trying to restore from backup. I decided to cancel out of that and did the shift + restore thing and now it's stuck halfway on restore from backup once again. Am I doing something wrong here? I'd prefer not to set up a new iPod since that would be a pain to put all my settings and info back in there, so hopefully there is another way.

I've waited a good hour since it's been stuck and it hasn't changed. Should I just wait more?

Just some info for AusGAFfers.

The 3G tethering is I believe only being supported by Optus at the moment.

I'm with Telstra and I don't have it, rang Telstra, they had no idea and put me through to Apple who told me Telstra wont be supporting until the end of the year. Optus being the one carrier they KNOW are currently supporting it.

I confirmed this with my brother who has Optus and he has the tethering option.

Voda they're not sure about.

Maybe try to set it up as a new iPod, then restore it again and select restore from backup the 2nd time around.

dude, you shouldn't have bothered. the public release IS the GM. same build 7A341. same build that got installed on all the iphones coming out the factory.

AT&T's Bing terms of service (on their site) says that *upgrades* are not eligible for Bing cashback. I'm an upgrade, so technically I'm not eligible, although others have posted screens of approved funds (I have not received it though)

Now I'm confused. If I'm not on an iPhone, but on AT&T with both an expired contract and eligible for a hardware upgrade, does that mean the Bing.com discount wouldn't work?

Only problem is that my iPod wouldn't sync with the GM build (I'm not exactly a dev). I figured that the public release might fix that.

I suppose I'll have to set it up as a new iPod.

Means their terms say it should not, but it might actually.

The discount isn't from AT&T, so it all depends on if Bing actually recognizes you as an upgrade or not. Technically it shouldn't work according to them.

Well, it's not like I'm in any particular hurry. If I were still on my iPod Classic, the decision would be a little more clear. But I'm not, I'm on a 1G 32GB Touch that I'm very happy with. Can I justify an iPhone? Yeah, I guess. I'd keep it "apps-only" and keep my music relegated to the Touch.

And the bonus of that setup - I guess - is that if I ever leave the iPhone for another platform (I personally think that WebOS will be absolutely killer by version 3.0 provided Palm survives), the Touch can still run the apps in a limited capacity.

Another question, out of sheer curiousity: Can I get an iPhone with just a data plan?

Looks like live video streaming has started in the mlb at bat app (currently watching the Dodger game). This one suddenly went from my least used app to my new favorite!

Finally installed 3.0, and it runs pretty solid. Really enjoying the landscape mode for safari, it helps a lot and I can type a lot faster that way.

Took the oportunity to delete a bunch of games and apps I no longer use.

Is it just me or if the keyboard is open you cannot switch the orientation the fly? Or was that the way it always was?

I just opened up my Gmail and was able to switch from horizontal to vertical at will with the keyboard out. But yeah, doesn't work in Safari at all.

...didn't Safari always have landscape mode? And yeah, you can't switch the keyboard on the fly in Safari, but you can in Messages, Mail, and Notes, I believe.

So I know jack shit about the Stereo Bluetooth thing. How does that work? Does that mean I could hear music through one of those hands free bluetooth pieces? Or are we just talking about buying some sort of bluetooth headphones?

AT&T Wi-Fi Supports Auto-Authentication on New iPhone OS 3.0 for Faster Hot Spot Connections
Auto-authentication allows iPhone users to seamlessly switch from AT&T’s 3G network to an AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spot without being prompted.

AT&T customers with qualifying iPhone data plans have unlimited access to the nation’s largest Wi-Fi network — more than 20,000 U.S. AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots.

The new process eliminates the previous two-step authentication, making it easier and faster for iPhone customers to connect to AT&T Wi-Fi. Auto-connect is established once a customer connects their iPhone to an AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spot the first time.

Atleastthey got one thing right. Now if I could just find one of these damn hotspots near by... Maybe Google maps now shows them after a search?

Edit: Can you tether WiFi connections over usb? :p

This REALLY needs to be an OS-wide feature. Any time the keyboard is brought up (regardless of app) it should be able to switch from landscape or portrait.

OS 3.0 is a lot better in this regard but still not perfect.

I wonder what auto authentication really means. Manually join the network and then ... nothing? You're just online?

This wouldn't work for third party apps, where the overall layout has to be redrawn, sometimes in a custom fashion by the app, whenever the device is rotated.

That said, I believe if the app already supports landscape rotation, the keyboard rotation by default will occur while the keyboard is up. Safari is the only counter example I know of.

I don't know why I thought what you meant was if it works if you type something yourself and try to copy and paste it :lol I just realized that makes no sense and you were talking about copying and pasting from other's posts. My bad.

From what I understand, after you first sign in to an AT&T hotspot, every time you go near one after that the phone automatically switches to it, even from 3G.

Searched on the site for AT&T hotspots...they only seem to be at McDonald's, Starbucks, and Barnes and Noble...three places I never hang out at, yay!

Yeah, that's what it seems like. But it doesn't tell you much about signing into the first one. It says something about how bad the process was previously that there were actually paid apps in the Appstore to do the authentication for you.

I don't see myself hanging around a McDonald's just to use Wifi. Depending on where you live though (say Chicago) Starbucks wouldn't be such a bad idea. The question is how many airports do they service? But I don't travel that much either so...

That was a ridiculously stupid thing to do. What you had was EXACTLY THE SAME FILE as what was released today, down to every byte. I thought this was common knowledge. The MD5 hash is identical. Apple just postponed the public release to let devs have some time with the final code.

Exactly. I'm surprised that Apple is fine with it being so messy. Sometimes you can switch while typing, other times you can't switch at all, and then there's that time where you can switch but only if you do it before calling up the keyboard.

Come on Apple, clean up this mess. I want sideways typing always. If you don't want to make apps like Calender exist sideways then fine, but at least fix fucking Safari's stubborn keyboard.

Hey, no need to beat up on *random internet person*. He said he was having problems syncing with first install. Maybe he grabbed the iphone version, who knows.

What time do you guys think the 3GSes will arrive? I'd wake up early to eliminate the possibility of sleeping through the bell but I'd be pissed if I wake up early on my day off and everyone is buying their 3GSes from stores and I don't get mine from UPS until 4:30 PM when they've been ready since the 17th :/
