Heh, I just read this on MacRumors:

So here's how savvy thieves can steal your phone and you'll never know where it is:

1) You lose your phone.
2) Savvy thief finds it, goes into Mail settings into your MobileMe account, and just turns "Find My iPhone" off.

That's right, there's no passcode verification, no prompting for your MobileMe password, nothing! Really smart, Apple.

Activation servers down. GRRRR. Would I have to go through the activation stuff also to install the 3.0GM? I just want 3.0 already!!

You wouldn't have had the problem if you had installed 3.0 GM anytime during the past week, when the activation servers weren't being hammered.

Friday is going to suck trying to activate my 3G S!

And that is why you put a passcode on your phone, so that someone can't do that. Amazing.
Passcodes can be pretty irritating if they're done too frequently but then if you put it too infrequent it wouldn't stop that from happening. You would think there would be some way to lock access to stuff like that regardless of the front passcode. Seems like a big oversight.

The passcode a four digit number, it literally takes me 2 seconds to input.

That is why you set the option in security settings to have your phone self destruct after 10 incorrect passcode inputs.

Entering a passcode frequently if you're getting sms messages can be pretty irritating. If you extend the timeframe window if no use, then it leaves a window where the passcode isn't protecting you. So setting it to destruct after 10 incorrect does no good if the passcode check hasn't been invoked yet.

Either way, the passcode shouldn't be an excuse for not having a password check or something to prevent someone from turning something like that off.

HAY GAIZ can i update my phone on a friends itunes without losing all my songs and stuff? it ask me if i should back up my shit when i clicked update on his itunes

Trying to update to 3.0 on my 8GB iPod Touch 2G. The backup it requires is taking an absurdly long time. It's been going on for about 40 minutes and has barely made any progress. It's almost as though it stalls. And this is my third attempt now, after trying it on various machines, all with the same issue.

EDIT: Finally got it installed. I canceled after the third time today of having the backup not really work, and found a workaround to get iTunes to bypass the mandatory backup. Starting over again, 3.0 installed in a matter of minutes.

omg, i just found out that the dev team has already made an unlock for 3.0. YES!!!!

i thought i was going to have to wait a bit, but its coming out on friday, fucking awesome. sorry if this was posted already =P

Has anyone who preordered from apple still not have their phone shipped? It still says prepared for shipment on my order status.

Same here, I'm getting a little worried as well. I guess Apple is planning on overnighting these things tomorrow.

Are AT&T customers locked out of seeing the Tethering and MMS options on 3.0? I can't seem to find the option to setup Tethering or any option that lets me send an MMS

yup. pretty BS.

Took ages to get the update for me. It downloaded fine, but installing didn't work for a few hours.

It's worth if for the landscape keyboard in texts, it's a very nice addition.

Seriously WTF is this shit, been trying to activate my phone for the past 5 hours now. All my friends are having the same issue.
It was happening to me for an hour or two. I just brute forced it. Worked eventually. Servers are getting hammered I guess. The same thing happened with 2.0.

I've got a quick way to enable tethering but I don't know where to host the file. Can anyone point out a place? If so I'll upload and post the instructions.

Apple stores in canada will now be able to sell the iPhone 3GS starting on friday

also note "For non-qualified customers, including existing Rogers or Fido customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone3G, the pricing without a new agreement is $599(8GB), $699(16GB), or $799(32GB)."

yikes

so stupid... considering my phone bill is $115 a month

gimme the $299 price you bastards

I'm on T-mobile on an unlocked iPhone. I had no switch to turn on MMS either - that is, until I entered the MMS settings under Settings->general->network->Cellular Network->mms.

then after a restart, my mms switch was on. Hooray!

Anyone else having weird reboot issues? I reboot by holding down sleep/wake, but sometimes it takes an extraordinarily long time. And some times when it gets there, the third party apps don't work.

On that note, if I do a restore, do I need to reactivate? I'm overseas, so I'm kind of not wanting to restore.

Dumb question but:

I'm on AT&T. How do they deal with purchasing an "upgrade" from my current phone to an iPhone? They don't actually sell iPhones in the AT&T stores. Do I buy the thing at the Apple store, then get some kind of rebate from AT&T?

They sell iPhones in AT&T stores. I bought my iPhone OG there. People are pre-ordering to pick up at stores on Friday. Where'd you get the idea that they don't?

how did they get the battery % on their iphone 3g? in the engadget review, i thought that was 3gs only?

Good question...

If that is the case, that entire video is bogus.

wait, how did you unlock the phone already? and if we are on Tmobile and have texting, do we get MMS as well or is that a separate fee?

I have an officially unlocked iPhone 3G.

I'm on T-mobile prepaid, so mms just costs me 25c to send/receive. I've been testing it, and it is as advertised.

An image gets super compressed upon receiving though (I imagine by T-mobile).

Anyone else who's on Twitter download the iPhone version of TweetDeck today? Holy crap is this an awesome app, and it's free!
I thought it looked snazzy but it crashed on me twice within three minutes, so I quickly deleted it. I prefer Twitterrific.

Yeah but your phone bill will still be that high AND you already got a discount when you bought the original 3G

Ok...so I began installing 3.0 and I've run into a problem. It downloaded fine but I got an error while it installed and now I'm stuck. My iPhone shows the USB with an arrow and the iTunes icon on its screen. I pulled the USB after the error in iTunes earlier and closed iTunes. Now when I start up iTunes with the iPhone plugged in it tells me it can't communicate and there's an error. Trying to restart with the power and home button isn't working, it still goes back to this same usb/arrow/itunes icon screen.

Help :(

So glad they released 3.0 before the new hardware. What a mess that was last year doing that, hardware, and MobileMe simultaneously.

All the calls about weaker wifi on 3.0 seem to be true. I get significantly weaker signal and delayed connection time. I wonder if they throttled it down to to improve battery life?

kHArvey16: ANy luck? I noticed some weird reboot issues after successfully installing 3.0 - sometimes during boot up (which only sometimes happened - sometimes it just hung), I briefly saw the "connect to iTunes" image.

You're defending Rogers? Really? Really?

Is the stereo bluetooth exclusive to 3GS or any 3G with 3.0?

Any iPhone 3G (with 3.0)

Did some digging and found something that helped. I had to restart the Apple Mobile Device service in windows and that got iTunes to see the phone again. Since it crashed during install I had to restore factory defaults and then restore all my data off the backup. It's re-syncing my music and stuff now so things are looking up!

No!!! So close... I noticed an option now to turn off Load Remote Images in mail. Which I quickly did. However, when viewing mail I don't see any way to manually load the images then if I want to:( Am I missing something or is this an all or nothing proposition?

Any 3G or iPod v2 & up.

It's really fun using even an iPod Touch streaming to my car's Sync.

Franchise-owned AT&T stores do not sell iPhones. Only corporate-owned stores do.
