Wow this is pretty impressive. Resident Evil degeneration was borderline unplayable on the 2g iPhone. Now the framerate is 30+ fps and feels really steady on the 3gs.

For anyone who is tethering, here's a couple tips that I learned the hard way.

1) For USB tethering, you absolutely need iTunes installed for your computer to recognize it.

2) For Bluetooth tethering, if by chance an ! next to the device and it says something about needing a device peripheral driver to be installed yet it keeps failing or unable to find it, ignore that. Simply right click on the device and then click Connect To and select Access Point.

I just now got both USB and Bluetooth tethering working on an Asus 1000HE netbook running Windows 7 RC1 7100.

WOW!! What a breeze to get my 3Gs.

I walked into my local Apple store, let them know I had it reserved, and they brought me to a specialist doing activations.

Total time in store 16min. Left with a fully activated and working phone.

Created a quick video and put it up on YouTube:

In retrospect, I should be taking videos in landscape mode vs. portrait. Looks much better on the phone then it does in YT (the phone mentions that it's compressing the video before it sends it off to YT), but it's certainly better than what Cycorder offers.

Hopefully lots of people get this phone so street brawls and embarrassing events can be captured in better clarity :D

Damn that looks nice.

I must be strong and resist....

Holy shit, I was totally on the fence earlier about getting the phone - after ~4hrs of playing with it and using it as usual - HOLY SHIT. It's like - 3G vs 3GS is 3.0 vs. 3.0 w/ 4 red bulls and a few lines of crack. The response time is amazing, copying 6 pics from the camera roll into an email then pasting and sending them was a nothing task. Amazing spec update. Worth the $200 to have a device that does everything that much faster.

edit: also, I purchased Let's golf earlier this week on the .99c sale - ran decent w/ some slowdowns on my 3G - runs like a fucking champ on my 3GS. No slowdown, fast loads, fuckin awesome. So happy. :lol

lol @ everyone shitting on the update when it was announced, like getting double the RAM and 50% more processor speed wouldn't fucking floor them if they did it on their computers.

John Gruber put up an impressive speed comparison video on app launching: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gruber/3641524865

I was thrilled with the update. I think the second killer app (other than the speed) will be the video recording. When something relevant or spectacular is captured with iPhone video, it will garner more interest.

That's the most impressive video you've seen?

The power boost is definitely the most worthwhile thing on the 3GS.
I never expected it to boost framerates of existing games though, that is a very welcome surprise, but that's probably because I had a game handheld frame of mind concerning that.

So far no luck with Rogers trying to do an upgrade to my existing iphone3G. Getting offered a $549 deal on the 32gb.
You trying Retentions or regular Customer Service? I think it might have to be Retentions. I'll try one call today, then tomorrow. Although they might be closed when I get home.

The most amazing thing about that video is that it implies that Gruber had been willing to wait 20 seconds to load a calculator app all this time.

He has more patience than I do. :lol

I tried retentions. I thought it was a little strange that she asked me whether or not I had upgraded my current iphone to 3.0. Then she took a couple of minutes and offered me the $549 deal. Yeah, I don't want to keep calling today so I'm going to try tomorrow morning again. I think the CSRs will eventually catch on and upper-management will inform them of the fine details of the offer.

Woo, got my jailbreak on. I don't think I could use an iPhone without SBSettings anymore. I might have to wait even longer for the 3GS depending on when it gets jailbroken. Minor gripe no1 with 3.0: I still cant delete the 'bookmarks bar' and 'bookmarks menu' after syncing with Safari Ft.

Oh and here's how my cable currently is, I've had to wrap it with plaster and thread to hold it together (once it starts shocking I buy a new one - but I'm trying to wait incase I get a 3GS)

How do you copy pictures in your camera roll?

Bottom left corner of the camera roll there's a small icon that when you press it has options for "Share", "Copy", and "Delete". Then you just click on the pictures to select them (red checkmark appears on it) and choose the action.

aight thanks, when i only was only getting the image name previously.

Did I mention I hate AirSharing? Second time it's fucking up an upgrade for me. Was stuck syncing that app for a while

This is my first post with the web app! The Apple store by me just said they're going to sell reserved unclaimed iPhones to anyone 1 minute before closing :lol

I had no issues with my iskin solo other than lint and dust which is to be expected but at the Apple store I saw this amaZing case called the Speck Best Case Scenario, silicon in the inside, plastic on the black and really nice in black and yellow or white and red... I ditched the Solo for it :lol

I love it, I have it in black and yellow now.

Can anyone with 3.0 check the App Store application?

I could have sworn that when I first installed 3.0 (leaked GM version) the "Updates" icon was changed into a "More" icon with options for Redeem and Downloads (like the iTunes Store app is). Now it's back to the way it was in OS 2.0 (which I like, just want to make sure I didn't screw anything up). Am I going crazy here or did this happen to anyone else? It's kinda neat if Apple can change the UI on the fly like that.

Yep, true for me too. Noticed the first time I booted App Store today that the spinner icon at the very top was erratic and going crazy and it took longer to load, and when it came up I lost the "More..." icon.

I activated MobileMe today to go along with my new phone... so far the push email works great on both my PC and Mac with mail arrival and changes appearing instantaneously, but not so on my phone... am I doing something wrong? I only get a mail notification when I actually open my Mail app on the phone, but shouldn't it push right through to the home screen and ding whenever a MobileMe email arrives?

I do have Push turned on on the phone but I'm not sure what else I should be doing.

You might not have push turned on for the account itself? Go into the settings for mail, down to where it says "Fetch New Data," then down to Advanced and see what it says after your me.com account... push? Or fetch? Even if your phone is set to push doesn't necessarily mean all the mail accounts are.

Got it, thanks.

So I just killed my wife's OG 4 GB iPhone when I upgraded her account to the 3GS. How can I use her OG phone as an iPod/wifi device now?

When I turn it on it only keeps saying to put in a valid sim card.

Did you try taking out the sim card from the top of the device (use a paper clip)? I think that's all I had to do with my OG iPhone.

Yup just take the SIM card out and you should be fine. You'll get a dialog that says "no SIM card" but you can just dismiss that and then you basically have an iPod Touch with a camera :D

I noticed both 3GS videos uploaded so far have that vertical perspective. If you hold the phone in landscape, does it fill the whole youtube window?
The orientation of the video depends on how you filmed it, so yes, you can record a regular landscape video.

Your sim is working in the 3GS, I presume?! Cheers ☺
Did you put in her new sim first or you skipped that step?

Hmm, the Fast Notes 'toggle' on SBsettings can be used as a clipboard...

anyone else pissed that file sizes aren't shown in the itunes store for videos on your iphone? Would be really helpful in trying to figure out what movies/shows i can fit on it with wifi....

Haven't tried this, but that is really stupid.

Anyone else's Facebook app borked? When I select the camera icon to take a photo the shutter won't open.
I've been having the same issue. Also when I search for someone on friends, the search bar has been disappearing.

How is the volume on the 3GS compared to the OG when on a phone call? And do u have better reception? I have a 3GS just chillin in the box. I'm thinking of returning it.

I was trying to point this out after it was announced, but several people insisted that this was a minor or insignificant update. Anyone who has used the 3GS knows that that isn't the case, and all the extra features that are being touted make this an amazing update.

honestly don't use my phone much for voice calls, but the calls I made today sounded fine. reception inside my office building did seem a bit better than my OG though.

Not sure if you are referring to me, but my stance was always that by the time that apps truely take advantage of the extra speed and memory, it'll be almost a year later. The advantages you gain in the short term from my perspective isn't worth jumping through hoops, trying to break contract, or paying a huge premium to get the 3GS from the stand point of this 3G owner. It was never that the hardware wasn't more powerful to notice. I still don't believe developers are going to alienate 40 million users right off the bat and make their apps require a 3GS. The marketplace is way too competitive to alienate a huge base of users as well as make the experience unpleasant for a non 3GS owner so that it would get negative reviews from performance.
