Don't say that! An AT&T store opened directly across the street from my office yesterday. The last thing I need to do is spend $300 on a new phone, or at least I'm trying to tell myself that...
Fact: My iPhone 3GS sucked my dick when I unboxed it...and it claims it'll do it again.

Does your current phone do this for you?!

I wanna get a 3gs, but I don't wanna pay out the ass for AT&T's service. I have a 16gb 2g and I pay 60/mo for unlimited everything....I dont wanna more than double that to go with AT&T

Why is there no dock with the 3GS?

They haven't included a dock since the launch of the OG. They ditched it around the time of the 16GB 2G phone.

As to why? To make more money, obviously.

Picked up my 3GS this morning amidst a huge line at the Apple Store. I was once again surprised at how many people were there for the third version of the phone.

Going from the OG iPhone to the 3GS is a huge leap. It really is much faster and smoother in all regards. Very happy with the upgrade so far. Those of you with 3G might not think it's a big update, but my friend here at the office with the 3G is already complaining about the differences in performance. :lol

Lame.

Walked in, they had plenty of stock, but I guess the Rogers computers crashed and they had little to no help on figuring out the upgrade path, so they refused to sell me anything. I'm guessing when I try to check in at lunch they will be completely sold out.

A coworker of mine picked up a phone though (new contract, so he didn't need to rely on the Rogers servers) and the compass/google maps part is really impressive.

EDIT: huh...telus HSPA is already coming online in the lower mainland. I guess bell/telus/globalive GSM softlaunch really is coming soon.

Man.....now I am going to the At&t store on lunch to try my luck because I too have a OG 4GB iPhone.

I upgraded from a 4G to a 32G today. Looking at the iPhone memory manager in iTunes, I was amazed at all the white (read: empty) space there was. LOL. I can finally add videos to my phone!

Do you expect circular pegs to fit in square holes?
Could have come with an adapter, like for iPods.

I remember wishing I could keep my 2G dock when I bought the 3G.
There probably is an adapter out there now, but it was sold long ago.

Don't they make universal docks that fit just about everything and has adjustable frames?
Yes, and that's what I mean, could have come with a little frame to get the 3G in the 2G dock just fine.

Bell/Telus aren't going GSM, just UMTS/HSPA. You'll see them if you search networks on the iPhone, but not on a plain GSM phone without 3G hardware.

I was seriously thinking of upgrading for $550 to the 32GB 3GS but the last thing I need is to be back in with slightly more than 3 years on my contract. I think I'll grit my teeth and wait it out and see how these new carriers turn out as well as see what Apple has in store for us next year.

the worst thing that can be said about Apple and their iPhone docks is that they did not design them to be forward compatible as they did with the universal dock.

if they had made the opening slightly larger at the beginning, a small adapter with the 3G could have been used to make it fit. as it is, no dice.

hey, at least all 3G accessories work with the 3GS :)

let's see what happens with next year's model...

You're right, it's HSPA, but it's ostensibly GSM in terms of conversation, because the phones they offer will be sim-bound and in many cases incompatible with their CDMA/EVDO network.

Another gaffer just gave an update; servers still down, stores still turning away customers. What a disaster.

I'm looking at QuickPWN's website but it's still a bit unclear to me as they're asking us to wait for ultrasnow? http://www.quickpwn.com/

I have a jailbreaked 1st gen iPhone running on OS 2.x (I used QuickPWN the first time around). I want OS 3.

ultrasnow is only if you want to unlock the phone right? I thought someone said the Mac version of QuickPWN is out now though.

Why do you need a dock? Just asking. I never had one, so I want to know what are you missing by just using the sync cable directly.

The ability to stand your phone up on your night stand next to your bed. I'm going to miss this. I might buy a dock...

I've gone through 4 sync cables in about 8 months of use. If the dock lasts just that long it'll be worth it.

HOLY SHIT

3GS is fantastic

just test this

Download terminator lite

I played on Iphone 3G / Touch V1 = framerate is like 10/15 max
on Itouch V2 its like a lil better

on 3GS ITS SO SMOOTh

I used the dock on my bed side table. Slap it on the dock and it charges and runs the audio out to my Tivoli radio. It looks clean too. I'll probably end up buying a new dock just to keep that going.

Same here. I didn't pick up a dock today because I might end up getting a new dock/clock radio or something, but I like having the dock on the nightstand as well. Very convenient. i'll either buy a new one or go the clock radio route.

Um... what are you doing to go through so many sync cables so quickly? Do they keep falling under the lawn mower or something?

Anybody care to try out Time Lapse with the 3GS' camera and share the results?

I have no idea why. Just regular daily usage with my laptop and occasionally plug into the wall.

Sold.

A coworker offered me $75 for my OG phone. The sleep button is broken and there are gouges in the metal from dropping it on concrete. Good deal for me? He's going to use it for parts I think.

I am so satisfied with the 3GS. It's just so fast and I love having 32gbs. The voice feature is handy for playing an artist quickly, but that's really it so far.

Yahoo push has been working great so far.

The oil-resistant screen definitely resists oil better than the other iPhones, but it seems to retain a ton of fingerprints. Like, every single touch and swipe. I don't see it head on but on my desk at an angle I see everything. So really, it doesn't matter what so ever, I was just surprised when I saw them all while it was charging.

that is crazy. I have had my sync cable for a year and no problems at all. I take it you work everyday, sync at home, I have been on about 5 trips with it out of state and it is working fine.

Has there been any indication in any reviews if the cell radio is any better in the 3GS? I'm so tired of spotty network performance and dropped calls while my girlfriend who is on the same network and has a shitty free phone has no problems at all.

I would kind of like an answer here too, por favor.

My wife's iPhone 3G does not have the greatest cell radio. My Blackberry flat-out kills it in this department. She'll have 1 bar or no service and I'll have 3-4 bars. I'm willing to spend the 400 just to not hear the bitching.

Still no clue what's up with my order! I've been on hold with Premier for 46 minutes now and counting. :( I wonder if I could just say fuck it, let me go into a store and pick one up if there's some available still? :(

Where did I agree that there should be no pack-in or forward-compatible dock?
When you responded like you did to someone simply wishing that Apple designed the 3GS with the existing dock in mind.

Don't need it, it would just be nice to still use it with the 3GS. As others have pointed out, it's got the audio out line on it, so it makes it convenient for connecting the iPhone to a stereo, clock radio, etc.

Try gazelle.com, it's a site that takes old electronics and will pay you for them. Right now they seem to be offering $100-120 for OG iPhones, depending on condition etc.

'Course, $75 doesn't sound to bad, from a friend.
