I have my phone with no data plan.shantyman said:Does anyone know how an iPhone works without a data plan? Does it shut off all non Wi-Fi data or does it charge you if you try to use it? What I mean is: If I am out and about and try to utilize data do I get charged per byte?

I type the directions into Google Maps, to my amazement on the map it showed not only the destination mark, but also my current location via the bleeping purple dot that moved real-time along the path as I drove! I had no idea this was a feature. Mind-blown.

So is turn by turn nav simply not possible with the 3G?? Argh --- and no voice control either --- so upset!Keio said:I also got both the G-Maps turn-by-turn navigation Apps - we are heading for a grand tour of the US in a couple of days; TomTom didn't make it in time. They look pretty good; any practical experience with them?
Jeesh get a hold of yourself. Turn by turn is possible on the 3G with the new software.anachronous_one said:So is turn by turn nav simply not possible with the 3G?? Argh --- and no voice control either --- so upset!
Well, you might be reading a bit more drama into my original text than what I had intended, but consider that my wife decided to purchase a couple 16GB 3G units at their OLD $299 each price to surprise me two months ago, and then held off on letting me know about them for a month. So now we're stuck with two-month-old 16GB 3G units that AT&T would not take back by the time I found out about them. Add to that the fact that it feels like there are features like voice control and video that are possible, but being held back artificially, and it makes for a undesirable situation.LCfiner said:Jeesh get a hold of yourself. No, no, no ... I'm not AT ALL upset with my wife, and yes, they certainly are nice handsets. I'm just frustrated with the situation. I mean, we have three young children, and having a 32GB with a better camera and video capabilities for the same price (or even the 16GB for $100 less) would've been incredibly handy for us. It's just a combination of factors ... but I fully acknowledge that I have a WONDERFUL wife.Mar_ said:The 'old' units are still incredibly awesome and I hope you weren't too upset with your wife for your surprise. That's one hell of a present.
Word. Google Reader is one of the best iPhone formatted sites on the web. I love it almost as much as the GAF reader.kaching said:Why not just use Google Reader through Safari? It practically performs as well as a native app would.

In any case, how'd you work out the visa/itunes/amazon song sponsoring? Is that all Google's introspection of your video or what??
anachronous_one said:So, more on topic, when is the Google turn by turn app/update due out? Between that and the Meebo and ESPN apps that were demoed during the 3.0 software announcement briefing, it seems that my most-anticipated 3.0 apps are not out, and don't appear to have any sort of ETA.
Did you try "Play song Ice Ice Baby"? I'd try it but I'm at work now. I know you can make it play by voicing the album's name, so just find Ice Ice Baby single, and you're good to goGary Whitta said:Voice Control is so nice - the only thing it seems to be missing is the ability to select by song title. I want to just say "Play Ice Ice Baby", not "Play songs by Vanilla Ice", but there doesn't seem to be a way to do that
Lord Error said:Also, now that I have iphone, I'm considering buying Apple's new in-ear headphones. I know they are not the very top of the line sound quality but it's nice having microphone and remote control on the cable.
But the sound quality is still an issue. I have Denon 751 now, and I'm wondering if apple's will be significantly worse. I'm a fan of strong bass and crisp highs, and Denon's are known to be among the best in those areas...
tom tom has an app coming out sometime soon that will use their own maps (as req'd for all of these apps) and i imagine other companies will release their apps relatively soon, as well.
snap0212 said:Okay, I'm thinking about restoring my iPhone to factory settings.
Is "back up" the only thing I have to do to save my data? And more important: What data will be saved and which one won't?
btrboyev said:i believe the the tom tom app also requires the car kit for additional gps hardware? with only an assisted gps chipset in the iphone, I'm not sure it may be 100% accurate and fast enough for turn by turn directions. Although it seems to be fairly accurate with google maps. it sometimes takes forever to get a lock though.

LCfiner said:the term "assisted gps" has messed up so many people. all it means is that it uses alternate location sources (like known wifi signals) when you're in areas that cannot use GPS, due to super tall buildings or whatnot. it doesn't mean it needs the assistance to work, it just means it can call upon the assistance where no GPS signal would work.
the cradle is not needed for the tom tom to work. yes, it will help the app out, but it's not required at all.
dskillzhtown said:Cradle isn't needed, but it has a speaker in it, charges the phone and keeps the phone from going into "sleep mode". Depending on the price, I think the cradle is worth it.
Yeah, I'll probably end up doing that, however the price in local Best Buy is $10 more than on Apple's online store.LCfiner said:do you have a brick and mortar store where you can buy and then return them if you dislike the sound quality?
if so, it's a no risk option to pick some up to see how they compare to your Denons.
