iPhone - Official Thread

So my friend was trying to update her iphone with the new FW and itunes died on her, and now her phone is not currently activated.

She called Apple who put her on with AT&T and they said that iTunes is down and might not be back up until tomorrow.

So she has an old iPhone that is in limbo. YAY for AT&T and apple taking the activation process out of the users hands.

Since I was previously an AT&T customer, my old phone was been deactivated with the expectation that the iPhone would just start working. I have no other phone. I am completely phoneless. I spend most my day away from the desk and my wife is 9 months pregnant. Hope she doesn't burst today.

There isn't really anyone carrying my spawn, but how fucked up would that be?!

Ok got mine activated earlier

I will be forever greatfull if someone can figure out how to make ringtones with itunes 7.7, i tried the old way..it isn't working

What? I just made a new ringtone doing the .wav --> .m4a --> .m4r conversion and it synced just fine for me.

Holy crap I got lucky. I was the last person at the store I went to to get one and I barely got it at that. Turns out the guy in front of me wasn't eligible for the upgrade price and his mom wouldn't let him get one so I got it!!! woo!! activation not working is a bummer though.

update - just got it to activate! Took about an hour of trying.

I guess I got lucky. My data plan activated within 15 mins of getting home, and after about 40 tries I was able to register the phone via. iTunes, and i just now got a text message saying the number porting is finished.

I haven't tested it out yet because I'm syncing all of my music right now, but as soon as I'm done I'm firing off some text messages

hmm. looks like my phone was just activated by itunes. but i can't seem to sync yet and i suspect my data plan has not been added. oh well, at least i can mess around on wifi and make calls. :)

I went back by the store near my place, they had 90 today and they're going to have 90 more tomorrow. They were on 68 with a line a block long still.

I fucking hate when new technology comes out.

It's this stupid activation/deactivation process. Apple and AT&T simply did not have the infrastructure to support what they wanted to do and as a result tons of customers are locked out of their phones.

It's mindboggling how no one at Apple or AT&T had the foresight to prepare for this activation fiasco considering they KNEW the firmware upgrade would de-activate current gen owners - requiring them to re-activate - and they knew they were going to get a lot of new activations with the 3G phone.

Ok Apple, I still love you, but ... only 10'000 for the Swiss launch? Inofficial number, but based on how many waited in line and traveled home without one, like me, it's probably true and ... are you fucking kidding me? You could probably have sold ten times today and made a lot more people happy, well, at least till the activation servers crashed! Yeah, I will still get one, but another thing like this and I will start to pirate all your software .... or something like that.

Shoula rolled out the 2.0 firmware upgrade a week ago for old phones. This is seriously bullshit.

glad i didnt waste trying to get a 3g one. OG iPhone ftw

I'm using an OG iPhone and its bricked thanks to this 2.0 rollout crap.

Cancelled my current o2 contract with carphone warehouse this morning, i was the first customer of the day to upgrade from a 2G non-iPhone contract to the iPhone. Ridiculous cancellation fee later, and now i just need to sit tight till its delivered to my door tomorrow morning. No bullshit queueing up for me!

MobileMe is still pissing me off. The main thing i was looking forward to was having everything synced up but it doesnt look like that will happen for a couple of days

im happy i didnt try to update before i left for work, its my last day at this job and ive been loading my contact list up...im assuming those with iBricks now have the slide for emergency screen

im hoping to have 2 old iphones to jailbreak/unlock for my sister and dad this weekend, just hoping iLiberty is able to do 2.0 by then

what are the new features of iTunes 7.7 [?]...please tell me i can right click anything and sync it to my iphone

woooow

I just spent 5 hours in the fucking heat outside of an AT&T store and was 3 people away from fucking getting one.

Fuck people who have all their friends show up without waiting 15 minutes before they go inside.

Ended up doing priority Direct Fulfillment so I should have it in a few days, I guess.
Ditto for me on the fulfillment thing. I ended up showing up at 10AM though. I don't mind waiting a few more days after reading about all the crazy shit going on. I had no idea. :lol

Fuck you very much Apple. I would have avoided updating altogether had I know this convoluted ass deactivate/reactivate bullshit was going to the call to action today when millions more are trying to do the exact same thing.

Ugh!!!!

So I downloaded the 2.0 update when I logged on to Itunes this morning but my iPhone (not 3G) did not update. Now it's telling me my current version is 1.1.4 and that there is no new version. I can't update! Is this common?

The Store/iPhone swap technique works in iTunes. I just activated my phone.

How do you do this?

Apple probably pulled the update down for now, so no more iphones are bricked.

Click the iTunes store, then your iPhone. It'll try to get through again. Randomly, it finally put me in line to activate. Now, I'm just waiting for my number to kick in. Might take as long as 24 hours, but at least I can screw around with some apps.

So you just came in this thread to point and laugh?

Dang had to wait almost 6 hours cause they ran outta phones but a new shipment came in so luckily I was able to get one.

The AT&T store couldn't activate it in-store so they said do it through iTunes.

Also funny story...............I was at the AT&T store in Sawgrass, FL and I was in front of Sean Kingston's mom:lol

I did, too. It's basically a test to see how much faith one person can tolerate in a company.

This exact same thing happened last time. No one learned.

Seems worse this time than last. Increased demand perhaps. I had zero issues last year, but right now I'm glad I elected to wait this one out.

I was going to say I had zero issues as well, but then I remembered that I ordered my 1G off Apple's website after 6PM or whatever so it wasn't actually delivered until something like July 16th, heh.

Are the Apple Stores selling out of iPhones?

I might swing by a store later today if there is a chance I can get one.

I was wondering the same. I'm guessing Apple has hundreds, but I'm not sure it's worth getting it tonight with all of these issues.

Did it? I have now recollection of widespread problems with the activation process last launch. I suppose they weren't adequately prepared for the size of the launch combined with the mandatory in-store activation.

Perhaps this time people will learn that Apple makes products that sometime doesn't work as it should, unlike other manufacturers.

Consider my dreams shattered.

My OG iPhone is like, DEAD. The case is bent, dented, and scratched. The screen is cracked. It crashes when it's just sitting there. The antennae is broken because I can stand next to someone with full bars and have no reception. I've been looking forward to this day for well over a month so I could finally have a normal phone conversation again.

And then this hell happens.

So glad I didn't stand in line over night. I'll pick one up on Monday, hopefully things will be sorted out by then. But man is the wait going to fucking kill me. Last night I was going insane with my poor, last breath iPhone.

:(

I was going to get one today, but from what I'm reading online it seems like I should hold off because of lines/shortages/activation troubles.

But then, people only really go online to complain about hitches, not to report success stores. It's possible there are people strolling into stores and activating without a hitch, right? Or are the complaints on the blogs the norm?

It looks pretty bad all around. You really can't log into iTunes to activate at all. It's pure luck of the draw.

i jailbreaked mine, so im waiting til the hacked FW before i use 2.0 anyway. It pays to jailbreak

me to - :lol

@all so apple is doing the "sony" with this new mega hyped firmware that brickes your system ;) (jk iam a apple/sony whore myself :( )

I let it sit for a good half hour this morning and it finally reactivated. I couldn't sync after that though. The phone works and I'm able to download apps directly to the phone, so I'm one of the lucky ones, I guess.

I'm telling everyone else I know to wait on upgrading the firmware until this is sorted out.

Today's life lesson: Never update any firmware without first checking the internet to make sure it's safe.

I updated my original iPhone to 2.0 yesterday with no problem. I have a ton of apps on the phone now. If I wanted to be a dick, I'd activate the smallest violin app I got yesterday and play a ditty for the iTears flowing in this thread, but that would be wrong.

What happened with your firmware? Did you update firmware today through iTunes and now you can't reactivate? :( If so, that sucks. It happened to a few of my friends as well.

ah btw. is mobile me working now? I might want to give the free 60 days trial a go.

Last time I checked it does but you have to put in you credit card and then cancel the stuff if you don't want to use it. I stopped right there because it was too risky for my taste. I don't want to pay that much accidently.
