According to the Apple site, there are no 3G iPhones anywhere in Texas except for one store with white 16GB. That cannot be right. Not sure how a site purely driven on the inventory database can be so wrong.

Does anyone here use a stylus with the iphone? I tried the 3G out at the Apple store yesterday and found the keyboard to be a little too small for my fingers.

You can't. They multi-touch screen relies on the heat of your fingers to figure out what you are touching.

On another topic, I had iTunes check for new versions of apps this morning and it found four updates (Exposure, Facebook, Trism, and something else). I figured "why bother syncing my phone" so I just checked for updates on my iPhone and no updates showed up. I thought the App Store was supposed to let you know when apps had updates?

I've been out of the country for 3 weeks, and I get home today. Turn on my iPhone (which has ZiPhone running, 16gb original iphone version on T-Mobile) and it works fine for a little bit...but later I get "INVALID SIM" message in the upper right and have since then.

Should I run a new version of ZiPhone, and/or take out the SIM card and put it back in?

I hope something didn't happen while I was away...

Because the inventory is changing rapidly.

Still, if the packages are scanned in, placed into the database and removed when one is sold, and the site is only doing a query, shouldn't it always be accurate? I am sure that is how it was designed, but not sure if it is working that way.

It was created by Juice, it was a web application and it was never quite completed.
I was going to save this for a new thread but I'll just post it here instead. I've been working on a mockup design for a NeoGAF iPhone app. Yes, I'm that much of a geek that I mockup applications in my spare time.

The following screens are just Photoshop mockups.

NeoGAFAppHome.jpg

This is the app's home screen. From here you select the forum you wish to view. The button box at the bottom will be where you configure your account and view personal messages. At the moment, I've already logged in (the app remembers your login) and shows my current info. As with the entire app, I expect this data to come from screen scrapes of the NeoGAF.com website. The settings button would contain options such as: "Show/Hide Sticky Threads" and "Number of Posts to show per page", etc.

NeoGAFAppViewForum.jpg

Here is what the Off-Topic forum looks like. It's a list of the first page worth of threads in the order of most recently updated. Sticky threads would appear at the top (they are off in this shot) and would be denoted as such. Buttons at the bottom include a refresh button and a compose new thread button.

NeoGAFAppNewThread.jpg

This is the compose screen for a new thread. The reply screen would be almost identical except it wouldn't include a subject line. As you can see, you can attach photos to your post. These photos could come from the iPhone's camera or library. The app would integrate with TinyPic.com to upload the photos for automatic inclusion in the post or you could enter the URL of an existing photo online. This would be a screen I have not yet mocked up. Futhermore, a post can have multiple quotes. Quotes can be entered manually via a screen I've not yet mocked up or automatically included when choosing to quote an existing post (see below). You can reorder and delete photos and quotes like you do contacts in the Mail app. When adding quotes you would specify the speaker (in this case goodcow) and their message.

NeoGAFAppThreadView1.jpg

This is a typical thread view. Touching the quotes icon next to each person's post would immediately take you into the compose reply screen with that post already quoted. If you want to reply without quoting anyone, just tap the reply arrow in the lower right. The arrows in the top right move you back and fourth through the pages of the thread. Tapping on a user's icon could also show their profile.

NeoGAFAppThreadView2.jpg

Should you want to jump to a specific page in the thread, you can tap on the center of the bottom taskbar (see previous image) where it specifies which posts you're currently viewing and a pop-up selector would appear letting you quickly navigate the thread.

NeoGAFAppThreadView3.jpg

This screenshot illustrates how when scrolling through a thread, the title stays fixed at the top. Also, images would automatically be resized to fit the iPhone screen and tapping on them would take you to a full screen viewer where you can pan/zoom and even save the image to your photo library. Also, not illustrated here is that if there is spoiler text you can simply tap the blackened text to reveal it in a new screen should you choose to read it.

So... is anyone here an iPhone developer? I have this whole app worked out in my head but I can't program Objective-C to save my life. I'd need a good developer to help me build this if the mods would allow such a thing. The app would likely just screen-scrape all the data from the neogaf.com website.

Maybe that's the way it's designed to work this year, but it wasn't like that last year. It was updated once or twice a day last year. The demand is higher now then it was then, which is probably messing with the system. Your best bet is still to call the store ahead of time.

Looks good, I like! Now are you an artist or an implementer. Meaning can you make this a reality? If so, we need a way to view spoiler tags.

I am...I plan on going to the store tomorrow to get my phone. Hopefully they have some in stock at the Apple Store. If not, I will order one at the AT&T store.

Wow, ckohler, that looks freakin' sweet!

BTW, when adding webpage shortcuts to the menu screen, how do you get a little icon instead of a screenshot of the webpage? I thought I remember it being posted a long, long time ago.

That GAF iPhone app is awesome, Evilore finance this genius.
(also I have a gaf fave on one of my iPhone pages wish it had an icon :( )

The site needs to create one and include it.

How much money is needed to get a free app up on the store? I am willing to put some money in the pot to get a NeoGAF app. I am sure the rest of you would too, right?

its $100 for the iPhone dev kit/license then I think you can chuck up what you want on the store for free (see the millions of public domain books on there and 10,000 versions of the bible :lol)

I'll chip in if a pal pal gets opened for anyone ho can make it but I'm sure $100 is nothing for Evilore to invest in expanding and improving access to GAF.

Somebody was working on a web-app for NeoGAF at one point. I can't remember who it was, maybe CajoleJuice? Whoever it was + ckohler = WIN.

I hate it. Looks sloppy. Would not download.

Anyway, I was surfing the net in bed on my iPhone yesterday, and I realized how close to perfect this damn device is if it just fixed some of it's nagging problems. I won't repeat them, but we all know that a few firmware updates can tighten things up in a jiffy... along with a better battery life. One day.

I wrote the web app you speak of. If I could find a place to host the Java scraping service, I'd probably get the motivation to carry it over the finish line, but alas.

Youtube of an early version of what I ended up doing:

I ended up changing the thread view though:

so, getting another rather odd error.

The ipod just randomly starts playing, loudly. I have it on vibrate, and had a podcast on pause. BAM...loud as shit 1Up FM in my office. I exited the ipod totally and figured that was enough. A few minutes later...BAM Aborigini, the first song in the ipod (Nugent is bad ass) blaring in my office.

So I restart the phone, and so far it hasn't happened since. Odd as shit though.

EDIT: count me in for a $10 spot on the GAF ap

OK, I seriously think that some of these apps are to blame for the horrid battery performance of my phone.

I had the phone fully charged this morning, and had listened to around 2 hours of music and the battery showed nearly full. I was running off 3G but had not made a call or checked for data, yet.

I then opened up netnewswire a couple hours before lunch, read a few things and then quit the app after around 5 minutes and then stopped listening to music. Two hours after THAT, i take out the phone and the battery is at around 70%. hmm.

now, 3 hours after that, I've used another 10 or 15 minutes of browsing, some music (screen off) and no calls. Battery is now around 30%. WOW.

There has to be some strange battery drain from some apps after they're supposed to quit. either that or I have a faulty battery and today's usage is just a coincidence.

edit: ckohler, nice mockup. I can't program, but I would chip in 5 or 10 bucks for someone to get the dev kit license (if they're serious and have the time to do this) and would pay a buck or two in the store for the app. (although most would expect the app to be free, i suspect)

Sorry to keep going livejournal about my plans on getting a iPhone tomorrow, but at lunch today I went by the Apple Store closest to me. At 12:20 there were 20-25 people in line which I found hard to believe. I went in the store and asked what time they opened. They said they opened at 9, the line starts forming around 8:30. I told him I was going to get there around 7:30 and wait it out. He figured I would be first in line with that strategy.

I did ask him about the availability site and he laughed. He said it was a joke and should be taken down as he has no clue what it uses to indicate in-store stock. Atleast at this store, they have been getting shipments everyday since Tuesday, according to him.

That's been my experience as well, and if I don't use any apps the battery life is pretty much exactly like it was with my old iPhone. Hopefully the 2.0.1 update (when it comes) will fix some of these issues.

Has anybody's 3G iPhone shut down all of a sudden and went to the apple screen. It's happened a few times for me.

Recently it happened when I was making a phone call and wanted to open and app, then all of a sudden my phone shut off.

yup, I've had around 3 or 4 reboots. always when switching to, or exiting, a 3rd party app.

this is EXACTLY why apps weren't available for iphone 1.0. imagine how poor the experince would have been then if we're getting these issues now, after they've had one year to work on it.

Similar to the super buggy fat nanos and ipod classics when they shipped, I expect a multitude of quick 2.01, 2.02 updates from Apple to fix these issues. And some updates from the app vendors, if necessary to fix their end of the issue.

The only app that has done that to me has been apple's own remote.app :lol

My battery life had returned to normal now too, but it took a "Restore" to do it. Now it's rock solid once again, with apps and regular use.

Yep, I've had this happen. Pays to do a nightly reboot, I've found -- just to clear the memory and start fresh.

You mean erasing all the contacts as well? That kind of restore? I couldn't do that, too many contacts. Is there a way to back up your contacts?

Umm... yeah. It's called Syncing. After the restore, it didn't take too long to sync everything back, and my iPhone was exactly the way it was before, with improved battery life! :)

Do you not have your contacts synced with Outlook or Windows Contacts or Address Book etc?

Heh, this is how I typically deal with Windows, not the Mac.

:(

I really hope this gets ironed out soon

Only issue i've had so far is my browser always crashes within a 2-5 minutes of opening if i am playing music on the ipod.

Still? Wow. Only happens on my 1.1.4 if the page I'm loading is image-intensive. Amazing to me that that's still a problem.

Airplane mode is your friend. Get acquainted.

If you're in an enviroment where you get little to no reception, just turn on APM and you'll notice a dramatic difference in how long the battery lasts.

Yeah and these things are typical when you allow native memory/controller access to a platform. I recall Jobs saying that this was a bad idea back in the day. If only there was a way to write mobile applications that didn't rely on native memory and pointer manipulation to work - what if there was another way to do it that came with mature tools that draw things as vectors which could easily be accelerated as tiles on the deferred rendering architecture. What is one of these methods was actually ON THE PROCESSOR so they could run quickluy but simply wasn't turned on because it wasn't licensed.

Ah well, certainly these things couldn't exist (Java/.Net,Flash) because it would make too much damn sense for them to be enabled on the platform.

I'm on 2.0 and don't have that problem. I'm in the same boat as you. Safari only crashes when I'm on image intensive sites. Otherwise, it's pretty damn solid. I'm guessing those on 2.0 who are experiencing these issues are having instability issues in general which have been reported by a number of people. Hopefully the 2.01 update addresses some of those.

While such an app would be easy to build (and not that I haven't considered just doing it since it appears GAF is all XHTML which is easy to parse), you still end up having to pull down the entire page which is slow. An idea approach would be to parse the site "off phone" into an XML representation of itself and move that to the phone.

Certainly doable and hostable on google app engine (for free) and I'm willing to consider it - but I'm not necessarily willing to do it alone (especially since I'd have to deal with Python again).

I've already written a script in PHP that screen scrapes the thread listing pages and parses the data out to fit my interface requirements. I could easily draft up an XML schema and have my script to output that.

I've never programmed in Python but I'd be willing to learn since Google's servers would mean unlimited bandwidth and performance. Juice has also coded some stuff in Java server that screen scrapes NeoGAF, so he might be able to help also.

For what it's worth I downloaded the iPhone SDK myself but quickly concluded that Objective C is just too far beyond my meager web programming skills to handle.

I think the hardest part of programming the web server parser portion would be handling account activity but with clever session variables and/or cookies it could work. Perhaps we could simply start by building a simple NeoGAF viewer app and leave the posting and account related stuff for later.
