I got home today and parked my car on the street, got out and went to the passenger door to grab my shit.

Lean into the car... iPhone slips straight out of my inside jacket pocket, into the gutter where it got totally submerged... it was literally pissing down.

FUCK! I run past the door and scoop it up, grab the rest of my shit and run inside. I took a look, shook some water out of it and hit the power button to try and shut it down if it wasn't busted already.

But it was still on, and wouldn't turn off because it kept thinking a non standard accessory was plugged in, probably a short on the ADC jack.

Otherwise it's fine... Prised of the rear back plate and blew on it a bit but it's as good as new.

Phew!

you should vacuum it out maybe and leave it sit for a day or two just to make sure there's no water in it that could possibly short it out either later today or tomorrow even...

better safe than sorry :D

Fuck that shit, I live on the edge.

For those that are still looking for an iPhone, I've spent some time the last few days doing some research. If you didn't order the weekend of launch (11th - 13th) expect to have an additional 10-21 day wait. This is according to everyone I've spoken to. Additionally, it appears the 16gb black version has a significantly longer wait. Needless to say, I've had a phone on order since the 12th (16gb black) and have started to get really frustrated.

Low and behold, there's actually a site that someone setup to track your order status. Unlike the official AT&T site, this actually pings the AT&T server and lets you know where you are in line and what number you are. Needless to say, finding out that I'm #2 for a 16gb one at the store where I ordered has calmed my nerves.

http://www.wheresmydamniphone.com

For those that don't know...here's how to use the tool (taken from macrumors forum):

For that site, you put in the store's zip code, and then for the starting one you have to GUESS what order number starts your store.

For example, my ORDER ID (on the receipt) says Q545020991. The length of yours varies by store but:

The first 4 are the store number. Look at the top of your receipt and it will say "Store No. (Q545)", so ignore those numbers because they aren't the ORDER ID. So that "CT123" is just the store number. The zero is also not part of your ORDER ID, it's just a place holder or something. So all this Q5450 is junk, I only need to pay attention to the last five numbers (keep in mind that the amount of numbers varies store to store).

So my ORDER ID is 20991. Yours would be "45678".

Now, my order is 20991, and I ordered Sunday, 7/13. I guess that... 40 people placed a DF order before me. So I enter "20951" as the starting number (first field), and then "20992" (pick one number after your order number otherwise yours won't show up, pick a higher number like "20999" to see how many people are behind you).

The site will now show all the orders from 20951 to 20992. You'll have to keep guessing as to how many orders are in front/behind of you. I finally figured out that my store started at 162 and my number is 208, and then there are like 50 people behind me (which I don't care about).

Hope this helps!

I canceled my NY Times subscription. When the guy asked if I had a reason for canceling, I said "because the NY Times app on the iPhone gives me the paper for free every morning," and he sounded depressed.

OHHHHHH.

I was going to post that it's outrageous that the family line cost thirty bucks more a month for 2 iPhones than paying for them separately, but I see the $129.99 includes two iPhones. But no SMS. And probably with no discount if one of the phones is EDGE.

I'm pretty sure family talk started at $109 for iPhone EDGE, so we can pretty easily extrapolate and figure out how they got to that number.

I forgot to ask; does anyone have any lag problems with their iPhone? Occasionally (more than occasionally) when I want to send a text the keyboard seems to lag behind my inputs really, really badly. What's going on with that?

It's a bug. Quitting the SMS app (or whatever app you're using the keyboard in) and going back in solves it.

Here's hoping 2.0.1 arrives soon.

Why would you do that? Now they'll start charging for the app!

One thing to note is that the headphone jack has a sensor/indicator in it to denote that it has been in water. This will cause them to not honor it for warranty work. You might want to find some reason to get that baby exchanged for a new phone sooner rather than later.

Here's another thought, if they were able to slightly change the UI to allow for batch deleting, they can do the same to allow copy/paste.

Thanks so much for that. I had no idea wtf was going on, and it's really infuriating, especially to a new iPhone user. I'll keep that in mind.

Not exactly the same level of implementation required.

In fact its not even close. All the UITable items are doing is implementing code for the swipe. The magnifying glass for text components already traps the press and hold. In order to implement copy/paste they need to go through all the UIKit components (and there are a good number of them) and change their behaviors in order for copy paste to work properly.

Do-able, but not the small task that the public thinks it is.

That's pretty dumb to have said that because first, they'll probably start charging for usage, and second, you realize free internet news is only going to last for so long if you kill off by not paying for the news. I mean if everyone who bought the NYT stopped paying, and just got it off the website, how long do you think the website would last?

Phoenix said:

I don't actually mind paying for quality news like the NY Times. However, the print edition really is just frustrating to deal with and an outdated delivery method.

Compared to other papers, due to its greater vertical height, it's more difficult to page turn and gets in the way on the train. It includes all these useless sections such as sorts and a weekly real estate magazine, it's dirty, and bad for the environment.

The iPhone version isn't ideal either by any means, mostly due to the small screen size.

If I get a Kindle in the next year or so, I would subscribe to the Times on that and not mind paying for it. The Kindle version would be like the iPhone app, except it'd be much more enjoyable due to the Kindle's screen size.

I'll get a Kindle when it hits $149 or $199.

Exactly. Everyone thinks that it's a simple thing to implement, but considering the constraints, and benefits of the UI, it's not all that simple. You have to come up with a good way to make it work, and then updated all the underlying systems to implement it.

Do-able is all I wanted to hear.
Us mere proles have been waiting.

Of course it's "Do-able" it's just a matter of finding a simple, and elegant, way to implement it with the touch interface. That's no small task.

Also, considering Apple has already said it's a low priority, I wouldn't expect it to be implemented any time soon.

Something similar happened to my OG iPhone,: only I dropped mine in a pitcher of long island iced tea. :lol My phone then proceeded to spam me with the same "this accessory is not made to work with the iPhone" message that you're getting. It happened pretty frequently at first but the amount of popups slowly decreased over the next couple of weeks. Threre was however, a permanent drop in speaker volume, but other than that it worked fine--and I would imagine that all the sugar, alcohol, etc... in a Long island would be more corrosive to the iPhone's "inards" than some murky water. Your 3G should be fine.

Well to be fair, Apple really didn't certify Long Island Iced Tea compatibility.

Who did you talk to? The phone is under warranty so unless they can show damage to the exterior, they are bound by their warranty to fix it.

no way... that's awful...

did you allude at all that you may have dropped it...

usually they give the benefit of the doubt until you spill the beans about you breaking it yourself or dropping it/etc.

Nope. I told them I had it in a case for a little bit, and then took the case off

First they tried to blame the case. He kept putting me on hold and coming back and asked me "Was it made for the 3g iphone.."

No..it was made for a flip phone...yes it was made for the 3g you douche.

I never alluded to dropping it because I honestly never did. I treated this thing like a king.

I told them how anal I was about it to. That piece of plastic that comes on the iphone when you buy it...I left that on while i put the case on it lol. I had just taken that off not more than 2 days ago and then switched it for my invisible shield.

Honestly though..even if i did drop it..what are the odds of it landing on that one button lol. He told me that if I send it in they are going to inspect to make sure it hasn't been dropped..I said fine by me.

I told him that If i dropped it I would have blamed myself and not lied to the guy. There are absolutely no signs of damage to the phone, other than the dirty screen protector which I will have to replace after I send it in anyway.

I paid for the 2 year warranty, I'm kinda regretting it after seeing how they try and act. I should have told him about how microsoft replaced my friends zune after 2 years with no warranty.

Box will be here tomorrow.

haha, i should have told him this "Yeah i dropped it...off the empire state building...and all that happened was it landed on the tiniest button in the world and it got stuck.."

He would have just responded with "so you are near an apple store then right?"

Microsoft has no problem replacing your friend's Zune because they have plenty of them lying around and they couldn't afford to lose one of their customers. ;)

But seriously, sounds like they'll inspect it and send you a new one. Nothing to worry about, but it does suck that you have to send it in and can't just exchange it in a store.

You should have gotten his information and then called back and asked to speak to a supervisor about his behavior because I'm pretty sure that's not standard.

Exchanged ? Hahaha. No way. I live in NZ, and this is a 1st Gen iPhone, which was never even sold in this country. Plus it's already been opened (which is quite obvious) from when I had to connect 2 tiny microscopic test points in order for geohots initial unlock for the 4.6 bootloader to work.

So, I have to pray to Jobs that this little phone keeps kicking.

leave it in a cup of rice overnight just to be safe. it'll absorb all the water that's left.

Question...

So if Apple is going to accuse me of lying and say I dropped my phone everytime I call..why did I pay 60 dollars for applecare?

So I have my lovely new 16GB 3G iPhone. My work bought it for me and everything is free (yay). Yes it's awesome, love it to pieces.

But, ringtones. I heard a nasty rumour you had to pay for them. It can't be true can it? If I can't just select whatever file I want as a ringtone then I'm going to be very angry. Because that's just utter retardation.

Also, is there an option of changing the incoming SMS alert sound to whatever I want? Believe it or not my previous phone was actually chosen based on this feature.

You can make ringtones in Garage Band and other assorted applications.

Save a 30 sec clip of a song to wav format using audacity.
Open the wav in itunes and convert to AAC
rename the m4a to m4r
drag into the ringtones part of itunes.

note: We called all the Apple Stores and corporate ATT stores yesterday and none had any phones in and all the reps gave some bullshit about not knowing when they'll be in again.

Anyone ?

Did you remember to import the newly renamed file into itunes? It didn't have a problem for me. It automatically popped it into a ringtones section when I put the file into my library too.

dork said:
Going to try again right now.

Yeah i re-imported new file before.

Where do I rename it at? I was renaming it in the itunes folder and re importing, but it wouldnt show up in ringtones.

I renamed the file in windows explorer. Deleted the old ones out of itunes, then imported the new file into the library. It just automagically stuck it into a ringtones section (it wasn't there before, this is the first ringtone I've done).

worked

I think I may still pay for this program. Its only 7.50...it gives you a 30 second slider bar and you can just move it around and make it, and it automatically creates and puts it in the ringtones folder.

second time it didnt work. Yeah this is a weird.

did you guys know this?
http://gizmodo.com/5027790/why-we-still-need-the-iphone-app-black-market
Developers can’t touch or enhance iTunes or iPod functionality in any way, shape or form—they can’t even access your music directory, meaning you better like the way the iPod button works just the way it is. Don't expect any apps to use your wonderfully curated music library either.
we'll never get music games that let us use our own music :(

I've had that too. Quitting SMS and going back doesn't consistently fix it for me, but doing a restart does. I hope they get this fixed in the next update.

Damn, that sucks.

So that's why Tap Tap Revolution wouldn't allow me to pick from my library.

I used to be able to play Queen and others when it was only a jailbroken app called Tap Tap Revenge.

Glad mine is jailbroken.
The 2.0 compatible apps are coming in. Just downloaded a Pac-Man clone with pretty nice graphics, and over 300 levels. Not to mention the NES emu.

I've had this Jensen iPod dock for a while and It worked on my old iPod 3G, my iPod Touch but now on my iPhone 3G it won't charge it and says "Not supported".

I just recently re bought the same dock because the old ones LCD died so I don't really want to go have to buy ANOTHER different dock. Any ideas?

So, if I want a 16 GB black iPhone... how long until I can show up at an Apple store at opening time and pick one up? The ones near me are still sold out every morning, according to that shitty retail availability website.
