The funny thing is I didn't even post my desktop for the icon replacement, I was only talking about un-cluttering with the folders which is something that Apple should REALLY consider implementing in the stock firmware.

Can you imagine having 9 pages of applications all downloaded from the app store, and having to scroll from page 1 to page 9?? That is totally ridiculous. Folders is the way to go and IF apple implements them in a firmware release, the same guys that ripped it as being non-intuitive in this thread will be washing the balls of Jobs for putting it in. Wow folders! Thanks Jobs!

Icon debate aside, having folders organizing your apps into separate categories is WAY better than multiple screens.

To be fair, you can scroll in both directions, so at worst you're going 4 pages.

I quoted your iPod icon replacement and didn't say a thing about folders :/

I've already replied to others stating that I think the real-life appearance icons look better than the buttons, no need to tell you that again although I just did. :lol

Manics said:
I agree with you and the icons actually DON'T belong to the same set. I just pick and chose icons that I liked which represented real life pictures as opposed to the same consistent "button look".

However, the theme that I posted FIRST, did have the same consistent button look and all icons appeared to belong to the same theme, but people still complained about it. So if you go against Apple, you are slammed. I like my desktop just the way it is, if you think I have no style that's great.

I went back and looked at your original post, and yes those icons are horrendous as well. The blue neon thing going on in there looks like the undercarriage on one of those gaudy tricked out Civics.

What are you talking about? They said you can have up to 9 pages of apps, as far as I know you can't go from page 9 to page 1 without scrolling back through 8 pages.

Sorry. I don't have 9 pages of apps, but I assumed that you could scroll in both directions on the screen. Doesn't appear to be the case from what I can tell with a simple test, which is a very silly decision.

So do you have sub-folders inside of those folder to further organize the apps? Or do you just have the apps in pages inside of the folders? I'd have to think that if you had 9 pages of apps, even having them in folders is a but cumbersome.

Not trying to "win" anything. I'm just amazed at how far people go to defend Apple.

Yes, you assumed wrong. Even if you could scroll in both directions it's not intuitive. Are you supposed to devote each page to a separate type of application and remember that "page 5 is games"? Wouldn't it be simpler to have a folder called "Games" which takes only one touch to open?

So it's impossible that we genuinely dislike your icons? It has to be Apple bias blinding us, right? Get over yourself.

Fixed for accuracy.

Apple has made plenty of questionable design choices in their OS and apps. eg: funky and divisive Time Machine interface, candy bar scrollbars in Leopard, ugly ass folders that are hard to identify in Leopard.

Apple "fanboys" all over the web, including Neogaf, have called that shit out as amateur hour.

But Apple pretty much nailed the look of the iPhone icons.

I hate the damn "fanboy" ad hominem argument.

Why? Touching one folder to open up all your games or all your business apps is more difficult then scrolling through multiple screens to find them? How are you supposed to remember which screen has which app on it? The folders are named, the screens aren't.

Agreed. I think I'm going to do the patch that replaces the candy bar with the iTunes scroll bars. It looks better and more unified.

Actually, the ability to scroll in both directions is very intuitive and makes perfect sense from a navigation stand point. And yes, devoting specific pages to specific types of apps is a perfectly fine way to organize them.

I won't discount the idea of having folders though, and I never said they were a bad idea. Just that when the discussion turned to your theme, I thought that it didn't look all that great either.

So, inside of these folders, can you have sub-folders to organize things further? How do you add an app to the folder? Drag and drop? If you have a lot of apps inside of the folder, are they displayed as pages?

If I have nine pages of apps, that's a lot of apps. Say I have two pages worth of games. Having them in a games folder allows me to get to that sub set of apps quickly, as I've already said, but if they're all just sitting in there, it's still a lot of apps to sort through.

And so far, I've had no problems knowing which page my apps are on. I don't have nine pages of them, but still, it's not that hard.

I did this and it's a nice improvement. Looks much better and matches iTunes

(now wait for iTunes 8 to mess around window and scrollbar styles again :)

Yes you can have folders inside folders but I don't have them set up like that. I've gone down from 3 pages of apps to only 1 page with the folders.

It's a separate 3rd party app called Categories that organizes them and it's not drag and drop, you have to run the app to organize your folders.

If Apple added it to their firmware then i'm sure a drag and drop type organization would be better.

Ok, cool. Makes sense, and the use of sub-folders would be nice if you had tons of apps. I don't, but it would allow you to categorize further. Drag and drop would be great for putting apps that you download into their right places of course. I assume the folders don't do anything to mess up with automatic update notification and when installing an update, I'm guessing it appears back on the desktop and not in the folder?

Not sure, just installed Categories the other day and haven't updated an app since installing it (app was just released). I was looking forward to it though because I had 2 full pages of apps and a 3rd page that was halfway filled. Was getting a bit annoying remembering where everything was on my phone.

I can't believe how passionate guys were getting about the design. I only posted my desktop to talk about the folders and people started ripping on me for changing the icons. Like they have to look at my screen everyday or something. :lol

Just saw the argument about the icons.
Yeah, I'll agree, that's a terrible icon set. Sorry buddy. ;)

I love using themes, but I'll admit, 90% of them out there are downright ugly.
I still think mine looks just right as everything matches and the icons are pretty polished.

Also, I am very grateful for the folders app.
I had 8 pages. And I had already grouped sets of pages for different app types.

I am picking up my new 3G tonight!
Can't wait to jailbreak it!

Here's mine currently, this morning I just purged any apps that I haven't been using to keep things clean:

Did you actually use the majority of those Applications? At the height of my iPhone use I had 5 pages of Applications and actively used maybe 10-15 of them.. The rest maybe once or twice a month if at all.

You had/have 132 Applications installed (Including stock Applications if my math is correct) That's kinda crazy don't ya think?

I'm not an Apple fan (iPhone's my only Apple product), and Maniacs, although I do love folders over icons through 3 pages, I agree with most people that Apple's icon is much better designed than the one you're using and the theme you were using is ugly. I really do like the folder thing though as I'm so used to Windows and make folders within folders within folders to organize my stuff =)

I have a tons of programs installed on my home computer as well.

I don't use them everyday, but I'm glad it's there when I need it.

EDIT:

I should add it was 8 pages at 12 apps per page.
I hated using that fourth line, looks cleaner this way.

How is that Jaadu working out for you? I'm intrigued, but €20 is a lot of money for a VNC client.

Which OS do you use, what resolution, experience any crashes and such?

Something strange happened to my Ipod touch right now. I plugged it to cradle as usual, and all of a sudden windows starts installing some new drivers. Few seconds later, I can access some newly formed folder on the Ipod, and I even found a screenshot of my own Ipod UI in there. When did this happen, why, and how did I make this screenshot? I heard about the screenhot feature of the OS, but I thought it was limited to devkit firware or something of that kind.

Also, does this mean that I can use this "Internal Storage" folder to copy files to and from various PCs, like I could with old classic Ipod?

*edit*
Heh, it looks like I cannot copy anything to Ipod, just copy screenshot from it :\

Does anybody have their iPhone on a FAN discount line, and have you recieved bills with the discount on it yet for the 3G?

The manager at the store said it applied, the salesperson said it applied, and the CS rep said it applied, but it takes "2-3 billing cycles for the discount to show up" and I don't want to be stuck in contract and have them pull a change-a-roo on me. The internet has been woefully unhelpful in this regard with most searches yielding 1st gen info wich did not allow the FAN discounts.

Thanks in advance

when you press the Home and Power button together, it takes a screenshot and goes into that folder.

then when you plug the ipod into your Windows system, it recognizes it as a camera device

I connect to both my Windows XP (1920x1080) and OS X (1280x800) boxes with it and couldn't be happier.. it connects fast, refreshes faster and hasn't crashed yet. It's a really well built app - almost to the point where it seems like something Apple themselves would've released.

edit: I should mention I sprung for it because Mocha VNC wouldn't support resolutions over 1680x1200 and I'd heard mixed reviews.

That's the main issue for me too. Dell 2707 here, and the 1920*1200 res makes Jaadu basically the only option.

But still, paying €20 for a VNC client... :|. Either way, thanks buddy. You just made the decision even harder :lol :lol :lol

Sorry but the stock icons that apple provides are boring as shit.

Are you honestly going to tell me that this:

looks better then the phone icon I used above?

Yes.

Then = Than.

But anyway. Does it look more like an ipod? Yeah, your icon does. Does it look as good as Apple's icon? No.

iTunes is such garbage software. My goodness. Not only does it take ridiculously long to back up my damn phone, the whole process is stupid. I wish I could use the Zune software to load up my iPhone.

I bought an mp3 file from the Zune store, and I wanted to transfer it over to my iPhone. On the Zune software, all I would have to do is drag and drop or right-click and "Add to Zune". On iTunes, I had to manually add the folder where the file downloaded (even though it was in a folder that I had already "added to Library") just to get the song to appear in the software. Next, I went through the stupidly lengthy sync process, which requires a stupid backup EVERY SINGLE TIME. Oops, it never synced the file. What the hell? Shut down iTunes, open it back up. Go through the lengthy sync process again, when all I want to do IS ADD ONE SONG!! Finally, it added the song.

There HAS to be an easier way to get my stuff on the iPhone (without jailbreaking it). The software is pure garbage. Another quick example: CoverFlow. Like the best thing ever, except that I if the iTunes store doesn't have the cover (and that's the case with a LOT of my music), I get the dumb black generic cover. Shouldn't I be able to cut and paste a cover, or am I missing that too? I think I messed up by owning a Zune first and getting used to the Zune software. It's not perfect (video podcasts take WAY too long to be converted, while they load perfectly on my iPhone), but in terms of usability, it's way ahead of iTunes. At least for the things I do most on my portable devices.

Oh, and my iphone 'desktops'.

No one else so far seems to use their phone for work as much as I do. Or at least, in a sys admin way. SSH, VNC, IRC, and RDP are pretty much required for mine.

You know I was gonna let this go, but people have to keep harping on it. So let's look at this iPhone stock icons and see how well they fit together as a theme.

2n0vl9u.jpg

The phone, ipod, SMS, app store and iTunes icons all look like part of the same set. They have a solid colour background with a white picture on it to indicate what the button does.

What about the others? If the Apple design gurus are such geniuses why didn't they follow a consistent look and feel for ALL the buttons? You're telling me the TV screen that is supposed to represent YouTube looks like part of the same set as the first icons I mentioned? BS. What about the flower representing photos? Exactly HOW does a flower represent pictures? Sure all the icons might look fine on their own, but don't go telling me this crap that they all look like they belong to the same theme or set. You only are accustomed to them because you've seen them so often on ads or if you have an iPhone.

Apple's icons are just as disjointed as any other themed set of icons for the iPhone and in fact, some themes that people have created have a more consistent look across ALL icons. Sure you may not LIKE the icons as much, but they're more consistent because they're all of the same style.

Good God mate, I hate iTunes as much as the next person, but you're overreacting!

Backup takes longer as you add more applications or have crashes of applications. Evaluate what you really need to use on your iPhone and chuck the rest. My backup times increased from 10 seconds to 15+ minutes when I installed Aurora Feint for example. I won't comment about the ludicrous statement.

Is the music file with of without DRM. That alone can be a reason for a lot of problems. And why didn't you just drag the music file into iTunes? You know you can do that right? Add to Library isn't an dynamic system, because that would involve scanning that folder every time you start iTunes up. It takes too long already. So it's logical that it didn't get added automatically. And why didn't you drag that single song onto your iPhone!?

You CAN cut and paste covers. Just select the song(s), right click -> get info, and paste the coverart.

Did you even try for more than 10 seconds?

Thank you for taking the time to answer his questions. I was about to post the same things you did. Honestly, iTunes is so easy and intuitive to use, that I think users who have been on Windows too long tend to over think it a bit.

Faster way is to just drag the mp3 file(s) from the windows folder to the iTunes window. This will automatically add it to the iTunes library and then you can sync it over to the iPhone.

I like to keep a smart playlist called "recently added" where there's a rule to keep a list of the last 200 songs Ive added to iTunes. This playlist always syncs up to the iPhone ensuring I always have the latest stuff on the iPhone (since i don't have enough space to sync everything on the iPhone).

I hate Apple with a passion, I love MS and I love Vista. I really hate iTunes (moreso due to it's sluggyness). There's a lot of things that are just stupid with iTunes, but the issues he brought up were unfair. Like basically 95% of the bullshit spouted about MS is unfair.

which icons have the most macro contrast? itunes, ipod, and sms. which icons are at the screen edge (easy to access)? itunes, ipod, and sms. they're meant to stand out together because they are the most accessed 'apps'.

blocky shapes with strong silhouettes are easier to recognize at a glance than photo-real objects with more subtle shapes.

Despite the fact that I've been labeled as the Apple Fanboy of the forum because of my participation in Apple threads, I'm not an MS hater nor do I dislike Windows. I own both Mac's and PC's, and use them both equally well, and I fully admit that iTunes on Windows isn't nearly as good as it is on the Mac. My comments were not meant to bash Windows users, just that many of them aren't use to approaching simple tasks in such a simple way sometimes.

I don't really understand how someone can hate a company with a passion though, unless they are just down right evil in some way.

Edit: Also, for those looking for games, besides Spore, EA has announced that the Sims and SimCity are both coming to the iPhone as well. I may not be able to resist SimCity.
