iPhone - Official Thread

Got my 3G and I love the feel of it, feels even more slick than the original.
The yellow tint of the screen really does bother me, but the less I think about it, the better.

Only problem now is that I can't get apps to update from the phone itself.
Whenever I click on "updates" it says the App store is temporarily unavailable, yet I'm able to browse and download new apps just fine.

Also, my computer didn't sync all the apps I had downloaded. I know I had it set to "sync all apps", and it stopped at the T's.

Also going to re-ask this... is there a tethering app for 3G? Official or otherwise?

Thanks for taking the time to address my concerns.

Backup takes longer as you add more applications or have crashes of applications. Evaluate what you really need to use on your iPhone and chuck the rest. My backup times increased from 10 seconds to 15+ minutes when I installed Aurora Feint for example. I won't comment about the ludicrous statement.

I have just three pages of applications and no crashing issues. Besides, if it's apps that are causing the backups to last more than 15 minutes, they weren't properly screened.

Is the music file with of without DRM. That alone can be a reason for a lot of problems. And why didn't you just drag the music file into iTunes? You know you can do that right? Add to Library isn't an dynamic system, because that would involve scanning that folder every time you start iTunes up. It takes too long already. So it's logical that it didn't get added automatically. And why didn't you drag that single song onto your iPhone!?

The file was a DRM-free Mp3. Thanks for the tip about dragging and dropping files, but I'd prefer for iTunes to scan everytime I open up like the Zune software so I don't miss anything. I'm assuming that's an option and I'll look for it. Also, how do you drag a single song onto iPhone? That's the functionality I was complaining about! If I click on a song, and I drag it to the phone, it doesn't work, even after it opens the subfolders. So, again, how do you perform that simple action?

You CAN cut and paste covers. Just select the song(s), right click -> get info, and paste the coverart.

Ah, I see. On WM10/Zune, you just right click on the blank cover and paste it in, rather than having to go into a menu. Much simpler, and rebuffs what jedi was saying about "overthinking" stuff.

Did you even try for more than 10 seconds?
Certainly I've tried to copy just ONE song or podcast over without having to do the whole backup/sync crap, and haven't been successful. So maybe you guys can help me out.

My comments were not meant to bash Windows users, just that many of them aren't use to approaching simple tasks in such a simple way sometimes.

I don't really understand how someone can hate a company with a passion though, unless they are just down right evil in some way.

My limited experience has been that a lot of heavy PC users who "hate" Apple are those who think that Apple ads are insulting to them and Apple's Mac products are too closed and unexpandable, which is insulting from an enthusiast perspective. :\

In addition, there are similar complaints about the ubiquitous of the iPod and how people only buy it because it's cool. anger against mainstream?

You can actually just highlight the songs you want to alter the cover for and drag the image from a web browser into the art window (or copy paste into the art window) in iTunes. EDIT: you can also add mulitple pieces of art for a song, which some people don't know. I believe the process is similar but I haven't tried it. I also don't know if hte iphone will synch the extra art or just the initial one.

switching to a separate subject:
I don't get these super long backups that everyone else does. I have never had one take more than ten minutes, And I only have more than 1-3 minutes happen when I change basically all the content on the phone at once

Sorry man, wasn't trying to be insulting. It's just that there are multiple ways to get your cover art into iTunes, like having it find it for you, coping and pasting, opening the info on the track, or drag and dropping. Just never thought it was much of an issue to add art.

Also, when adding a single song, there are a couple approaches there as well. I've created a playlist called "iPhone" that I have iTunes sync every time, and I just add new music to it and everything works super easy. Alternatively, you can set the iPhone for manual syncing, and then you can drag and drop items right to it, but you have to then do everything by hand. Both versions work well, just a matter of preference.

You hit the nail on the head. I don't know what they screen the applications on, but it's not working.

I've tried doing it again and couldn't get it to work strangely. I think I've had my iPhone on 'manually manage music' when I did that. Now that it's on 'sync only checked' I can't do it anymore. (yay for having a music library larger than the puny 16GB) That bring me to another thing I HATE about iTunes. The non-checked songs aren't being played on my PC. It plays the song I select, and when it's finished it automatically forwards to the next checked song (which can be 5 albums further). Idiots, the ones who designed that.

Ah, I see. On WM10/Zune, you just right click on the blank cover and paste it in, rather than having to go into a menu. Much simpler, and rebuffs what jedi was saying about "overthinking" stuff.
It's even simpler as scola mentioned: 'You can actually just highlight the songs you want to alter the cover for and drag the image from a web browser into the art area.'. But probably doesn't work from the Opera browser that I use.

Certainly I've tried to copy just ONE song or podcast over without having to do the whole backup/sync crap, and haven't been successful. So maybe you guys can help me out.
Try tinkering with your sync settings. I do the whole backup/sync shebang every time. And it doesn't take more than 30 seconds ever. Deactivate everything you don't want use anyway. Don't watch TV-shows or movies on your iPhone? deactivate that part of the sync. Like I said, throw some applications away that you don't use or have no function other than showing people what the phone can do.

Also stuff like photos, do you really need your entire picture library on your iPhone? If I want to show people my vacation pics, I'm not going to do it from my iPhone. Just take a cricital look at what you want to use your phone for and your backup/sync times will drastically increase

Hmm, I'm going to try that. I generally don't use playlists at all as I always want to hear an album as a whole (YAY METAL :D) so playlists are kinda redundant...

Let's see how this goes :) (oh thank god it actually sees the songs seperately even though it's now a playlist instead of checks. I don't have to resync 12GB of music :lol)

Are you guys sure on Spore being released today? Most places online say the 7th, but that could very well be old info...

Yeah, the date I saw was the 7th as well, although some places are expected to break street date, and if you read the Spore thread on the gaming side, you'll see a number of people have it already.

Considering that the iPhone version is Spore: Origins, which is already out for the iPod, I think it could still come today though.

Oh, I'm with you. I only use playlists on rare occasions, and generally listen by album too, but one giant, auto-synced playlist works great though.

It's even simpler as scola mentioned: 'You can actually just highlight the songs you want to alter the cover for and drag the image from a web browser into the art area.'. But probably doesn't work from the Opera browser that I use.

That's not simpler. In any scenario, you have to drill into the get info page, then to album art area BEFORE you can add cover art. To contrast, using WM10 or Zune software, you can do the browser drag/drop and cut/paste DIRECTLY onto the album art, without having to go into a menu. The equivalent in iTunes would be to drag/drop or cut/paste the cover art into cover flow directly, without having to highlight individual songs and going into the menu. I tried doing that, and it doesn't work. Not a big deal now that you guys told me where I need to go, but definitely not simpler.

Yeah, I think doing the manual sync last night would've saved me a ton of time, so thanks for pointing that out. Definitely the way to go when you just want to add a few files.

Also stuff like photos, do you really need your entire picture library on your iPhone? If I want to show people my vacation pics, I'm not going to do it from my iPhone. Just take a cricital look at what you want to use your phone for and your backup/sync times will drastically increase

I'm not syncing photos or videos. That's not what's slowing down my sync times to ridiculous levels, it's the backup part, which seems to be related to one or more of the apps I installed. Sucks, cause I don't feel like spending time testing to see which app(s) is causing the issue.

Edit: Also, for those looking for games, besides Spore, EA has announced that the Sims and SimCity are both coming to the iPhone as well. I may not be able to resist SimCity.

Oh man.. Those are some real games!! I hope they're accurate to the real versions and not the usual dumbed downed portable versions.

SportsTap is free and a pretty damn good scores/stats app for all the major sports.

Yeah, it is pretty nice, but really slow to update when I gave it a shot last weekend prepping for the football season, which is why I recommended the new ESPN iPhone site a few days back. Very nice, and a model for how to make an iPhone website.

That said, I'd love an NFL app like the MLB one.

Wow, I knew using 3G would be a battery killer but I thought I'd be safe if I kept it plugged into an outlet as I listen to the radio.

Slowly but surely, the battery indicator is going down. :(

Okay GAF, I need some input on the iPhone OG.

- After the 2.02 update my phone still runs a bit slowly.
- My iPhone is regularly taking corrupted images. Where the image was basically two portions of the image but divided in half, or sometimes three sections. It's weird.
- Writingpad is pretty damn laggy for me when creating a new note, and prone to crashing.
- Sometimes my Home button will not bring the phone to attention, meaning when I press it nothing happens the phone remains black until I hold the power switch to get the On/Off screen to appear.

Is this behavior normal glitches, or does it sound like my phone is unreasonably buggy?

I just need additional input as I'm considering taking it to the Apple store to get it looked at.

I've had a few of those things happen. The camera thing happened to me yesterday for the first time. Very strange. I just closed and reopened the app and it fixed it. I also used to have slowdown problems until I did a clean firmware install and chose not to restore from a backup (clean slate). Now my phone's performance is much better.

The 2.1 release can't get here soon enough. There are some rumors that it'll drop next week at the Sept. 9th event, but I personally don't expect it until later in the month. Hopefully it'll clear up all these odd bugs and stability issues.

I've started having issues with battery life once again. I'll have a battery at 2/3 full and leave the phone for a few hours and come back to find the "20% warning" on the screen. Usually this occurs after messing with a third party app.

I would accept this performance from a Windows based product, but honestly - this is really ticking me off. I have information on here I do not want to just toss down the drain. Work access codes and such.

So if I have to use Windows tactics to repair it (REFORMAT lol), then that really defeats the point of buying Apple product IMO. :\

Still I may just suck it up and do it. >:|

Phew, I'm not the only one!
Seems quite a few people around the net can't hit the updates tab in the store without getting the same error message as me.

They said it started sometime yesterday which is true for me too.

Working for everyone here?

I'm having this problem too, I think the update server is down.

Also going to re-ask this... is there a tethering app for 3G? Official or otherwise?

If you jailbreak your iPhone you can tether, but just cross your fingers that AT&T doesn't notice the huge spike in data usage.

If you make a backup before you restore, everything will be on the phone as you left it before you restored. It's not like formatting Windows, more like replacing the engine in a car and leaving the rest of the car the same.

What happens if you tether and ATT calls you on it? If you're still under their "soft limit" is everything peachy? If you go over do you get cancelled and hit with a fee?

I believe I posted about my problems with that earlier in the thread.

My last backup / restore point is borked.

My phone is currently borked.

So if I restore and then backup, my phone will continue to be borked. :\

I haven't had ANY of the issues you describe above. I've had laggy SMS input, but if I close and open it back up, it works fine. If I had your issues happen often, I'd return the phone.

They can charge you for the data used as you have to pay extra for tethering.

I don't know if it is true, but supposedly AT&T and cell phone companies can tell if you are using a laptop or phone. So if they get suspicious they can check the data log and see you are outside their plan and then rape you with a $5,000 dollar bill for surfing Neo-GAF and watching Youtube.

Sportacular is pretty good too. I actually prefer it to Sportstap, though it has less sports.

For sports scores, just put ESPN's iPhone webapp on your home screen, it's awesome. I like it better than all the other sports apps.

I've always found syncing the checked songs wasn't that great. A more optimal method for me was to just make an "iPhone" smart playlist and then I tagged every song I didn't want on the phone as "nophone" under grouping. Then in the smart playlist I said include every song except those tagged "nophone".

I moved on from that though, now I just have a ton of smart playlists geared towards getting songs I want to listen to on the device, and just let them sync themselves. The only times they've failed me is if there's a specific song I want to listen to that I usually wouldn't listen to, but then I probably wouldn't have synced it to the phone myself anyway.

oh god I want an iphone so bad all of the sudden. But I don't want to get rid of my Blackberry. I'm gonna have to start double fisting both like Samantha Ronson.

Has anyone tried using the iPhone as a voice recorder for meetings/interviews? Any good? If so is there a particular app you'd recommend? I know there's a few.

I don't know about voice--but I've been using Cycorder for video and I like that a lot.

SpeakEasy Voice Recorder is the one I use, it has a great interface and is cheeeap ($1.99) , though you cant transfer the files to pc so I dont know how useful that would be to you.

To those who have Jaadu, can it connect to XP RDC connections?

I have tried the mocha RDC light, which connects to my work PC fine, though its short on features.

I am a n00b about these network issues so I don't know if there is a fundamental difference between RDC or VNC etc. that would keep Jaadu from hooking up to my work PC (without installing anything else to it).

The reason I am eyeing Jaadu, even at its large cost, is that it could potentially work for my work PC AND my Mac at home.

Thanks everyone.

EDIT: also still looking if anyone has gotten their bill with their FAN discount intact on the 3G. I am still leery that I was being misinformed by the salespeople that it applied to the whole service plan (voice + data).

eMac says STFU.
And after all, why blame the product because you forgot to do something? Y'know, aside from it being a convenient punching bag? I don't understand this place sometimes... we've been through HOW MANY pages of pissing and moaning about this phone by the same people over and over, saying it's a shitty product, and yet they STILL HAVE IT. Just sell it and spare the rest of us the melodrama.

It's not too hard to understand people's complaints, considering they are all valid. Is it such a hard concept to grasp that people absolutely adore the phone, and yet be incredibly frustrated and annoyed with all its problems at the same time?

I love the iPhone as much as anyone in this thread. It has revolutionised the way I work and many things in general. I could never imagine not having one anymore, because it really does give you so many amazing benefits. But to love it so uconditionally that you don't voice your concerns over the horrible problems with it? Well that's a bit silly in my opinion.

Last week I was away from work and at training in another part of the city. I was excited to have a device like the iPhone at something like this for the first time, because if I got bored I could IRC, I can check my emails, I can do a number of things. But all last week, pretty much exactly after lunch time, I lost full coverage while everyone else using other phones still had coverage. My phone wouldn't even let me receive phone calls or send sms.

Then there's the horrible lag when it does work. Using google maps to find your way around a part of the city you haven't been in before I thought was going to be a dream. Instead it became very furstrating. Trying to type in something while there's horrendous keypad lag was killing me. You sort of need something with a lot more responsiveness while you're travelling in a car navigating your way around 1 way streets etc. But instead typing and even backspacing spelling errors was a chore, rather than a joy.

Then there are all the application crashes, lags etc. I've lost count how many times I've died in some of my games because the phone lags for about half a second every now and again. Not to mention the game just dropping to the 'desktop' every now and again, losing my progress entirely.

So really, defending the phone is one thing. I love it too, beyond any device I've ever owned. But for fucks sake, I'm going to whinge about its faults as much as I like because they are so fucking frustrating.
