Until it makes mobile Safari even more unstable, which it would, and everyone complains and bickers incessantly about it.

Other than Hulu, I can't think of anything I would want Flash for. A good solid Hulu App + NBC back in the iTunes store would be preferable for me.

Flash wouldn't provide an instantly tangible usefulness to the phone outright, though. MMS is something that NEEDS to be there for the iphone, where flash would be a nice addon.

Hey, what cases are you guys using?

I have an OG iPhone and was using the Incase Leather but there are way too many exposed portions of the phone. Any thoughts?

I'm using the Switcheasy Capsule Rebel for my 3G. Gives full protection and looks good. They should have original iPhone cases on this site:

How does it need to be there? I've had my iPhone for more than a year, and it's gotten along just fine without it. Like Tobor, I appreciate that some people want it, but it doesn't effect my usage of the device one bit. In fact, I'd rather have Flash than MMS.
 
What is the overall consensus on the 3G coverage and functionality? Is it important for phone calls or only data usage? I've read some pretty conflicting reviews and now its become a major question mark for me. If it matters I'm in SE Michigan.

I've found 3G coverage around here to be great in the middle of town but fair to poor in the suburbs, which suggest a network coverage issue to me. Because it's kind of slow at handing off to a 2G connection when the 3G signal is poor I tend to leave it on EDGE unless I really want 3G to download a file or something. No sense using more battery life and giving myself a poor signal when it's in my pocket waiting for calls or checking email. If I'm not in town chances are I'm at home, where I have wi-fi anyway.

I can pretty much only notice a difference with data, and even then a strong EDGE connection seems faster than a flaky 3G one, at least when it comes to establishing the connection.

Of course, YMMV.
 
Screw Flash and MMS.

I hope they make Safari more stable. It's been horribly unstable since firmware 2.0 compared to earlier firmwares, enough to make it almost useless. Opera on my Sony K750i was more usable given that it at least didn't crash every 5 or so minutes, even if it looks like shit.
 
I don't want to start a huge debate about this (again), but have you guys who want Flash so bad ever actually thought about how it would work? Do you really want embedded Flash in Safari on the iPhone? Really?! Load any big page in Safari and you're lucky it doesn't crash. I can't even imagine what would happen if it tried with two or three embedded Flash plug-ins.

Look, face facts, embedded Flash is not something Apple is interested in for obvious reasons:

* It'd be a battery drain (unlike h.264 which has custom chips)
* Mobile Safari has a size limit for web page downloads for a reason
* Mobile Safari chokes on the simplest of animated gifs. Do you really expect wiz-bang Flash animations to perform any better?
* Apple spent a lot of time and effort to get Google to convert their video to h.264 so they wouldn't HAVE to support Flash

AT BEST, the only way I can imagine Mobile Safari supporting Flash would be in a sandbox player. Basically you'd come to a page where Flash is embedded and you'd have to tap the empty space to launch the "Flash Viewer" to download and view it. Of course, this would be retarded for all the websites that use Flash navigation but that's how it would work. This is similar to how embedded Quicktime currently works. Even pages with background media like music require a separate viewer to listen to the file. Is that really the Flash experience you are wanting?

I don't see Apple supporting embedded Flash in Mobile Safari any more than Java for the same reason they don't like Java. They want devs to use their app store and native Objective-C code base, not start building apps in Adobe Flash.

Yes this.............my safari has been crashing on me much more lately ever since I updated to 2.0.2
 
I've rarely had Safari crash on me on any websites since the release of the 1.1.4 firmware, and haven't seen that change in the upgrade to 2.0.

Also, other phones have a Mobile Flash option, and Adobe has even said they have a version that would work well on the iPhone, but Apple hasn't been very interested in implementing it.

View any monthly desktop wallpaper thread here and it'll crash. I guarantee it. There's a subtle threshold where a web page approaches the graphics memory/web page memory limitations and Safari doesn't always determine this in advance. When this happens, it crashes rather than giving you a friendly "this page is too big to display" message.

I've only ever seen one other phone/device that had true embedded Flash in it's browser and it's performance was sluggish. Flash video skipped bad. I have used stand alone Flash players (not embedded in the browser) on Windows Mobile and even a rare Sony Palm device and those weren't bad but that isn't what people are asking for here. If Apple did that, people would just complain because it wouldn't be the same embedded-in-a-webpage desktop experience they are dreaming of.
 
Oh yeah, Safari crashes at least once per session for me.
I would imagine Flash would kill it on large flash heavy pages, but for simple sites with a flash video or flash button, I could see it being very useful.

Overall, still great.

Anyone have the Tuner Internet Radio app from Nullriver?

It's $5.99 and the main reason why I want it is that I hear it streams NPR and BBC World Service.
 
I've stayed at 1.1.3 until 2.1 comes out (1.1.4 was irrelevant for me, and not worth the hassle of jailbreaking/unlocking again).

Apple was FAR too ambitious with the 2.0 update, launching the App store ontop of everything else they added. 2.1 will hopefully be what it should have been in the first place.

I haven't tried that cool NeoGAF webapp someone made, but sounds like you've never really browsed GAF on Mobile Safari :P

I agree, and I hope at least most issues are ironed out. I'm looking forward to the 2.1 firmware and iTunes 8.

Yep, browse GAF all the time actually, using both the web app and directly through Safari. I had some issues early on, but as I indicated above, I haven't had issues since the stability update months back.

That said, I do avoid the threads that I know are heavy image threads, because Safari can choke on them. Images in and of themselves aren't bad at all, but when it's a heavy thread with lots of hi-res stuff, then yeah, it will choke it out. Someone mentioned the Desktop Threads, and they are a good example, but those can bring a normal browser to it's knees while it loads depending on how the images are posted.

But yes, I read GAF all the time on my iPhone, and don't have issues with it at all. I even post from the iPhone fairly regularly.
 
What kind of battery life are GAFFers getting on their 3Gs?

Over a 24 hour period, my iPhone can get about 6 hours of voice and internet usage (going by the stats) before the battery runs down all the way. Is this about what others are getting?

And any recommendations on where to get a cheap power adapter for a 3G for the car? I have heard that OG iPhone car adapters don't work with the 3G.

I have it. It's a great app and means I'm never short of something to listen to when the iPod and SimplifyMedia have somehow left me short.

As for NPR and the BBC, I searched for 'BBC' and that came up with a few channels that stream BBC and NPR content. Not sure what exactly, though. If the stuff you want isn't in its channel database it supports any MP3 or AAC audio stream, so if you can find a stream for the relevant channel in one of those formats it'll work.

I'd say a good 1/3 of the threads I visit on GAF have a fair number of images. I wouldn't say image-intense though, I've come to expect such pages to load because I've never had problems with viewing them on computers for a long time except on horrible slow internet connections.

That's why to me, it's not all that great if I have to intentionally avoid threads I'm interested in just because it could crash the browser.
 
Speaking of Safari crashing...

Took lunch and wanted to browse CAG (cheapassgamer), kept crashing even though I have images turned off, and it's a fairly simple text forum.

I was in the middle of a reply too. :arg:

But the ONLY threads I intentionally avoid are the ones that I know are going to be very image intensive, like the desktop thread mentioned above. I go into pretty much every other thread and of course there are images in them, and they never kill Safari for me. What I'm saying is that the only time I've had issues with Safari on GAF is when it's an especially image intensive thread. Images in and of themselves are never a problem for me.
 
Apple ignoring Flash will go over as well as them ignoring Exchange Servers and standard headphone jacks with the OG iPhone release. :lol

The iPhone is a nice piece of kit in theory, but in practice and outside of the Jobs Reality Distortion Field / Apple marketing machine it's pretty annoying.
 
there is definitely a tendency for safari to crash when typing in form inputs such as the one on neogaf. You can tell that it is struggling based on the sometimes unresponsive keyboard, especially when the screen has to scroll to the right. When browsing gag through the webapp I rarely have problems.

Webapp is perfect. I love it.
CAG used to have a mobile site but they got rid of it when the forum updated.
 
The WebApp makes browsing other forums seem so horrible in comparison.

I don't care about MMS too much at all. Nobody I know really uses it. Are MMSes a free part of most standard packages in the States or something? Nobody I know seems to want to pay extra to be able to send picture/video messages.

I'd just rather pay for MMS than I would for standard SMS.

Right now, I don't even have SMS in my plan.
But I would add a cheap MMS plan as people are always trying to send me pics, and I used to use it a lot years ago to show people where I am or something cool I found.

I have to tell my buddies, "Sorry, you can't send me a picture message, I have an iPhone."

Sounds backwards. :(

We also have to pay for SMS. Per use is $0.15 unless we sign up for a value pack that includes it on top of our plan. $11 gets us Caller ID, Voicemail, and 125 sent text messages. I think we gotta go on the $15 value pack for picture/video messages.

Considering my phone's unlocked and swirlymms is almost ready for 2.0, flash would be nice. But the only "feature" i want from the iphone is for all the bugs to go away. Keyboard lag is fucking irritating, apps taking way too long to load, insane backup times (that doesn't really backup anything), and corrupted backups are really making me start to hate this damn phone. IMO 2.0 was the worst thing to happen to the iPhone!

So I just got the phone yesterday and I was trying to install some apps, mainly facebook and shazam and everytime I try to open them, it just kicks me back out to the home screen..can anyone help me why its doing this?

If that fails, well, all I can suggest is deleting them off the phone. (hold down on any icon for a few seconds until it starts wiggling) and then redownload them directly from the phone via appstore.

Did you install them through iTunes or the AppStore on the phone itself? I had an app yesterday that I installed through the phone that refused to work but worked first time when I added it using iTunes

Posted my initial impressions in the Official Spore thread may as well stick them here.

iPhone version is pretty cool so far. Although it crashed when I tried taking a picture and importing it (Not even sure what that does lol) But otherwise it's very smooth oh and even though it had crashed when I reloaded the game it went right back to were it left off.

Only on level 4 so far

Oh and to add it's pretty hard to modify your creature precisely but still fun

Top Down 3D. It's basically the first stage of the real spore game broken down into levels. You eat little sperm like things collecting there DNA while avoiding bigger creatures than you. As you progress you get to modify your creature and add parts (Like say spikes which lets you hurt the bigger creatures) to it.

It's tilt controlled but it's actually the first tilt game I've grasped first time (Still can't play Monkey ball :/)

I think Fumbleview is still better. It's a web-app but it gives you LIVE game data (ball position, down, play-by-play, etc all displayed on a field graphic. It's pretty awesome. There's Fumbleview U for college football too.

I would kill for a native version of Fumbleview U. I've emailed the creator but he's dead silent on it.

Haven't tried it yet, but the Pro Football app has play by play with graphics as well. And when I was messing around with it earlier, I clicked on one of tonight's games to find a chat session in progress with fans from both teams yacking away. Thought that was pretty cool too.
 
Dammit. I need help guys. My iphone thinks my headphones are plugged in all the time and i cant get any sound out of it except through headphones or speakerphone. Any ideas on a setting I may have inadvertently pressed? I already tried to blow on the headphone jack, and reboot the phone. Any ideas?
