I'm going to ask a really dumb question, but is your silent switch enabled on the side of your phone?

if i could make my font huge, i'd do it. now, granted, this only happened on my edge iphone, and hasnt happened on my 3g one (granted, havent used headphones a lot with it, so ymmv).

but fuck. holy hell. i have no idea what caused it, besides having used headphones previously. but the phone then gets stuck in headphones mode. turning it on and off, muting it, flipping the silent switch, everything, it just thinks it needs to output sound to the headphone jack. i dont know if there is something in the phone that detects if headphones are there and gets messed up, but if you get this error (by pulling out the headphones while sound is playing -- this was the cause once for me), then you are screwed.

however, the ONLY way i could figure out how to fix it, was mess with plugging headphones in and out, while playing/not playing music. it was never repeatable, and no surefire combination to get it to work. just plugging in headphones, listening to music, maybe pausing the music, unplugging headphones, then playing music again, hoping it comes out of the speaker, which is what should happen. it doesnt work 100%. it doesnt happen 100% in getting stuck in headphone mode.

but once you get stuck in headphone mode, the ONLY WAY i could figure out how to fix it was to plug in some headphones and keep messing with it. so i always kept the iphone white headphones in my backpack, just in case i was listening to music through my car stereo (via line in) and in unplugging it it got stuck.

man, just reading your post reminded me of the sheer frustration with the whole thing, which happened a good 8-10 times over the last year.

Wow, that sounds terrible. And yeah, it was way too frustrating for me. Anyway, I did a restore and thankfully it fixed the issue so I get sound of the iphone speakers. So it seems like a software malfunction. If that didn't work, I was calling Apple. I don't think I could handle what you went through. Thanks for the tips, and if you ever come across the problem, try restore. For sure, I'll be a lot more careful about pulling the headphones while music is playing. Though I can't recall if that's what caused this.

Yes, there's a little switch in the EDGE iPhone's headphone port that relies on the exact width of the plastic to trigger when the headphone is plugged in, and gets stuck if the plastic expands or comes loose.

The EDGE ear buds definitely come loose where all the glue is (around the buds themselves and near the jack), I had to replace my first set, but now my second set is coming apart. In both cases, the "headphones are in" switch got stuck frequently as son as the plastic started coming loose.

The problem is awful, because if it thinks headphones are plugged in, YOU CANNOT MAKE OR RECEIVE CALLS. I've made several calls and been on the line for 20 seconds without being able to hear or be heard. Really annoying.

You can make or receive calls, but you have to put the phone on speakerphone to hear. Or use the earphone/bt headset. BTW, I'm not sure if my issue was necessarily caused by that switch or whatever, since a restore seemed to have fixed it.

thanks.

Go through the whole walkthrough, this thing is amazing. It's got a full blown web server for browsing files from a browser.

I've now got it set up at juicePhone.local:8080 as a Finder favorite, as a stack, with a nifty iPhone disk logo.

I'm really impressed with how many file formats it supports, particularly movies, PDFs, and Web Archives. This will be freaking awesome for flights and storing books on here.

How do you make it a finder favorite/stack.
I would like it in my finder sidebar more so than a stack actually as I don't think I will use it incredibly often.

I could have used this the other day when I had to burn two CDs with of wedding photos to take to my mom, I could have just dropped the folder into my phone and copied it to their computer =/

From Finder, Go-->Connect To Server (Cmnd-K), then http://<phoneName>.local:8080 and hit the + button so that Finder remembers it.

From there, you can drag the icon on the desktop to the right side of the dock as a stack. What's more, you can modify the icon and it will persist.

It doesn't appear that it's successfully preventing sleep (you get disconnected if the phone locks or sleeps). Still, I copied 30MB of books in just a few seconds. Very pleased.

yeah, i never did a software restore. just lots and lots of plugging in/unplugging headphones while hitting play/pause, trying to get sound to come out of the speakers again

orly? you learn something new every day. i figured there was something in the plug about knowing when headphones were in hardware-wise, interesting. if the headphones are plugging in/thought they are plugged in, you can make/receive calls, at least i could. i would make a call, and bitch and moan into the phone about not being able to hear anything, then hang up. the other party would hear the whole thing, because, well, for me, the mic wasn't disabled, just the sound output from anything but the headphone jack.
trying to put it on speakerphone did nothing, as the speakers were disabled. only getting the phone out of 'headphone mode' would fix the lack of sound coming from the speaker.

but yeah, havent been using headphones much in my 3g phone, so i dont know if the issue is still there/etc. when i have used headphones, it hasnt cropped up.

i am still kinda peeved about that whole thing...once i was listening to music going to the airport w/my girlfriend, so i didnt use the mp3 player part in the airport/on the plane, i just talked to her. we landed, and i was trying to call my ride, nothing. i didnt have headphones, and it was stuck in headphones mode. eventually i scoured the airport (fucking indianapolis airport, no one that day had headphones. no ipods, no mp3 players, nothing. i spent like 30 minutes looking for headphones) and found a guy who just got off a plane with an ipod, borrowed his headphones for like 20 seconds, and got my phone 'working' again. that was in may, and from then until 3g purchase i rarely used headphones. that was like the last straw in a way.

So what exactly does this software do? I figured it was just a way to move files on and off your iPhone to use it as portable storage, but that you didn't have access to the files from the phone itself. Is that not accurate? If you drop a PDF file are you able to see and open it? You mentioned movie files, I don't imagine it can do anything other than store those files, so what's the big deal?

Actually you are able to view the files. It supports your average array of document formats, plus iPhone-happy movie files. One pretty nice thing is it supports Web Archives (save a web site from safari), and another is that it supports a number of programming language files (cpp, py, java, etc) with syntax highlighting.

This is a very sharp, very polished program.

Edit: I think this will be a more flexible way for me to store movie files on the phone, because I want to be able to easily drag-and-drop movies. I haven't tried it out yet, because I need to go through a sync before I have enough space for any movies, but if it works well I'll definitely use it that way.

Awesome
Thank you!
What icn did you use btw?
I used these

but would prefer a higher resolution icon than 64x64

So I bit the bullet and bought Spore: Origins for the iPhone and I'm loving it so far - it reminds me of Flow but with more depth and EA really nailed the motion controls on this unlike Sega with Monkey Ball. Definitely recommend it.

Wait a sec, so this app allows drag and drop of files to the iPhone? That'd be awesome. Downloaded seeing as it's free only for a limited time and I'm a sucker for saving money.

I read about this online, if something gets lodged in the jack the iPhone will think there are headphones plugged in. Use compressed air to try and remove debris

Speaking of Monkey Ball. There was a patch recently for the game that in my opinion, completely ruined the controls. I thought the controls were a bit loose before but completely reasonable. But now it feels like you're controlling a brick. I seriously had trouble just moving forward.

I hope they roll it back. They've murdered the damn game.

Is there anyway to make the phone vibrate when i receive a text? I can't seem to figure out how to do it. I can only get it to make a noise. :S xx

Speaking of the vibrator.. is it just me or does it suck ass?

If anyone's looking for a text editor, TextGuru seems to be on sale right now for 99 cents (regular price $4.99). The description makes the app sound pretty feature-rich -- cut and paste, uploading and downloading files from your PC, etc.

After a few weeks with my 3G phone, it's a mixed bag.

Pros
- Amazing browser. Can't say enough about it.
- Cydia rocks. App store ain't so bad either. A wealth of great, free apps.
- Nice screen. Touchscreen isn't as good as I hoped, but still great.
- iTunes...wait, what? Yeah, I found workarounds to do the same things MediaMonkey could. I still wish I wasn't forced to use it though.

Cons
- Awful battery life. I browse a lot, and with WiFi and 3G it's dead in hours. With both disabled, battery life is much better, but I'm used to days of standby with my Sony-Ericsson.
- Mic is crap. It's just not as loud as other phone mics. I can barely hear my gf sometimes.
- The speaker is awful too.
- Wallpaper? Ringtones? MMS? WTF? Yeah, kinda castrated with pretty basic shit IMO. Pwned that mofo to get it right. Still no MMS though. :(
- No synching of calendar with Windows Calendar. Fuck you pos.

Great phone, but I'm itching to see what the next generation offers. I'm also looking forward to the Xperia now. I hope future firmware updates fix some of the problems. It's really a love/hate relationship thanks to some omissions. PEACE.

-Battery life is awful on all 3G phones. Nature of the beast right now, and we all knew it last year when Apple introduced the phone without 3G. GPS doesn't help either.

-Not sure I understand. Mic is poor so you can't hear your GF? Huh? For the record, I've yet to have anyone complain about not being able to hear me. Maybe you got a bad phone?

- How is the speaker bad?? When using as a normal phone? When using it as a speaker phone? Listening to music? The only time I've noticed it being especially bad was with music, which I'm not surprised about.

-You can add any image you want to be your home screen wallpaper. If you're talking about desktop image, than, Yeah, I suppose, although an image behind all my app icon is really not that interesting to me.

- Ringtones? What are you going on about? It's super easy to make any mp3 file into a ringtone. I do it all the time.

- No MMS? Yeah, yeah, we've been beating that dead horse for a year. You shouldn't be surprised about that one.

-Sync with Windows Calendar. What app is that?? Something different from the Calendar included in Outlook? Syncs fine with Outlook, it's contacts, and it's calendar. The one most people use.

That isn't my experience. Before updating Monkey Ball, I couldn't beat the second group of levels. After the patch, I whizzed through most of the single player game in thirty minutes. It was night and day, the patch improved my ability to control it.

Though it would've made more sense for them just to provide a dead spot slider in the preferences.

I'm new to this so can someone tell me how to get this:

As my wallpaper on my iphone?

My Japanese cellphone had 3G and lasted up to 2.5 days...

The iPhone is a far more intensive device, but I think "all 3G phones" isn't quite true.

Just go to this forum on your iphone web browser and put your finger on the image and save image. Then go to photos select the image and make it your wallpaper.

You're very right.
My buddy's last 3G phone could last a while.

Lasting "up to 2.5 days" doing what? Depending on your usage, the iPhone could last as long probably as well, but I get your point. Compared to the other smart phones in the iPhone's class, they all roughly have the same, rather crappy battery life, and most 3G phones have the same issue.

I just bought Text Guru, it's on sale today only for $.99. It's a full text editor with a working copy and paste. Pretty nifty.

And Spore Origins is rad. I'm really enjoying it. The ability to texture your creature from any photo on the phone is amazing.

Did the 0.1 or 0.2 update remove the "update all" option from the phones App Store update section?

I have it on my 2G which is 2.0.0 but it's missing from my 3G which is 2.0.2.

Possibly, but I update via iTunes as much as possible these days, I find the phone doesn't screw up as much that way, so I don't know for sure.

Doesn't matter though, 2.1 is real soon, let's not worry about those persistent 2.0 problems, until we find out that Apple never fixed them in 2.1 :P

Hi, Is there anyway to unlock/jailbreak a 2.0 2nd generation iphone? I got my 1.1.4 replaced by apple last night and it came preloaded with 2.0 i believe.

Firmware 2.1 set to hit on Friday. Jobs says significantly increased battery life, lots of bug fixes. I assume it'll also have Genius Playlists and the Nike+ app if they're included in the Touch update as well.

What's the deal with the nike stuff? Do we still need to buy the pedo shoes?

what is the best free software for transfering files from the iphone to the computer?

also, is there a way I can tell itunues to backup my iphone files on the D drive and not the C drive?

You never needed the shoes, but you needed a sensor. May not need that any more with the 3G iPhone and GPS built in. Looks like a sweet app though.
