Are you using pop3 or IMAP? Sounds like you're using pop3. Switch to IMAP, it keeps the mail on your phone and mail account in sync.
 
Finally decided to upgrade from an unlocked/JB 1.1.4 iPhone to 2.1. What a hassle, and I ran into some serious snags, but everything is set now. Unlocked, properly jailbroken. Feels good.
 
iPhone 2.1 is already jailbroke?
I thought it was just the touches so far.

Nope. I'm running both the Installer 4 and Cydia on it. It's not a simple program, you'll have to use Total Command, but you can do it. It wasn't too bad for me since I have two computers. You'll need iTunes 7.7 and 8.0.

edit: Not sure if I can post the tutorial here but it's out there.

I've listened to some music, surfed the web, installed 2 apps, taken some calls and generall fucked around with my iPhone all day and it's only down a slither of battery. Take of that what you will.
 
Backing up is so much faster now! Installing and updating applications is also a lot faster. I was on my phone all day yesterday on email (I have push/fetch enabled), texting, Safari, camera, and installed an application, and the battery certainly seemed to last a bit longer. I started the day around 60-70% and when I went to bed I just got the 20% notification. I think it's improved, but not a huge jump from the one-day observation. Of course, we'll all have a better idea after several days of use.

I've only tested it for one day, but so far I'd have to say not even a little. We'll see.
 
I don't get it...

I'm trying to copy a podcast to my iPhone. Usually I'd do this on one of my work PCs but instead, because it's the weekend and I'm away from work, I wanted to do it on my wife's newly purchased MacBook. So I plug it in and all is cool, but moving the podcast to my iPhone doesn't work. I click "manually sync files" but a message says "you can only have one sync'd computer, do you want to erase your iPhone and replace it with this iTunes?". Of course, I click cancel. And that seems to take away the ability to copy a file to my phone.

Seriously. Is there something stupid I'm missing here or is this really incredibly retarded? I'm a new Apple convert but jesus fucking christ. Not being able to copy a file to a mobile device is the most stupid thing I've ever seen. Only one computer in the entire world can do this procedure?
 
Just like an iPod, an iPhone can only sync with one computer at a time.

The iPhone can only be synced to one computer at a time, but if you get the air sharing app you can get files on to your phone without having to sync it up to iTunes.
 
I just installed 2.1, but now my iPhone has no service apparently. I'm stuck on a message that says "Please allow the iPhone to activate - This may take some time" or something like that.

Anything I can do?

And yeah, my phone and ATT are legit.

So I was correct. It really is retarded. Only one computer in the entire world can copy content to my iPhone. That's just laughable.

I have the air sharing app. But that only allows you to use the phone as a storage device right? It doesn't allow the OS to access the files. For instance, an mp3 that you can play. Or am I mistaken?

it has to be plugged into itunes for it to activate - make sure its out of airplane mode and whatever (go in and dial an erroneous number in emergency dialer to do this - if you left it on)

after every update your phone has to be activated again

I'm plugged into iTunes. I've tried turning the phone off, closing out of iTunes, but nothing's working. Thanks for your help - anything else I can try?
 
I just installed flutter, and tried to sign up, but it is not sending me the password (via sms) is there any way you can sign up for this through a browser? or am i stuck here waiting.

A good solution is just to manually play the podcast through safari.

Yep, it's retarded. I know on my old 3rd gen ipod, I could manually add songs from any library on to it, just couldn't get songs off the ipod onto another computer. For some reason, that feature has been removed, not sure when.

You can play and view the files through the air sharing app, as long as the iPhone supports the files type. Not the most elegant way to do things but you'll at least be able to listen the the podcast.
 
So I just installed customize.
How do I disable all of the text under each icon?

It used to just be a simple slider, but now I don't see the option.

Also, SMB prefs and Freeboard prefs are grayed out, how do I make them accessable?
 
I used to use the iGlass theme on my 1.1.4. Can I put that on my 2.1? I don't see it under the installer (seems like everything's gone from there) nor Cydia. Actually, I don't see Summerboard at all. Am I missing any Sources? Or maybe it's just not available.

Another question, with Summerboard, I was able to make the background dim while the icons were still bright. How do I do that with Winterboard? I don't see the option. Is it even possible?

I'll just keep searching around but thought I'd post here to see if anyone knew anything. Thanks.
 
I think it's winterboard now.

Yep, definitely winterboard.
It just did what I was wanting to do (remove icon labels)
Christ, the homescreen looks so much cleaner without labels.
 
Yeah, I'm using Winterboard now but that background dimming option isn't there, which was great in Summerboard. Oh well, maybe it'll happen eventually. I need to find a new theme.

Also, there's something called "No Page Dots" which gets rid of those hideous page dots. Makes things look a lot cleaner.

Been like that for almost 2 hours.
Turned it off for a awhile, turned it on again, no go.

Anything I can do before I restore it?

I'm getting a "files not found" error with customize.
It says it doesnt have the files necessary to operate in offline mode, and to go online to update it.

WTF does that mean?


edit: bboy, can't you use kate to change the background image?

You can use Winterboard to just change the background image too if you want.

Choose a wallpaper, then choose "user image/wallpaper" in Winterboard.

Found it. It's called "Dim Wallpaper" on Cydia :lol
 
I read the link above, but I wasn't trying to restore or update to 2.1.

I was just installing an app from the App Store.
It crashed, rebooted and has been stuck there.
 
So, have you guys been able to get customize working for you?
I've changed the permissions and everyhting, but I still get the error saying
"files not found"
Customize could not find the required files to run offline. go online and run customize to update the files.

I've resorted to just going in and changing all the icons manually in the app folder.

speaking of which how do you find the apps you bought through the appstore, ive looked all over and i dont see them

what did u use?

im on an unlocked 1.1.4, want to make the jump but i know it requires a restore, and im not sure what all i will lose on my phone if i do

There is no way to turn off the auto correction. You can get the phone to learn words that you use, so just keep typing them (and pressing the x button to cancel the autocorrect). Eventually, it won't auto correct those words.

Okay cool. I guess I have to be a little more careful pushing the "X". I don't think they could make it any smaller.
 
My battery life is much nicer. I haven't placed mine in the dock since I updated yesterday morning, and I'm still at ~75% (EDGE model FTW)

You can tap the entire word correction bubble and it'll reject the change. try it out.

Wow! Wish I could say the same. I'm not sure what is killing my battery life. I generally have to charge everyday now and I can't decide if it's a certain app that's doing it or the fact that one of my four e-mail addresses gets a considerable about of e-mail. :(
 
What are some good iphone icon resources?
The majority of what I can find is pure CRAP.
 
For some reason my keyboard doesn't make the clicking sounds, nor are sounds made when the iPhone recieves a text or when entering a correct password.

The settings are switched to on (eg. 'Keyboard Clicks - On') etc. Anyone know what's up? :(
