Once you have jailbroken, start cydia and install winterboard, there are plenty of themes available through cydia. If you want to make your own themes you can use Diskaid to access your phones files.
Here is a good place to learn about where all of the files go when you create a theme.

you can still use a 3G iphone after jailbreaking it right?

unlocking it means you just can't switch it to any other company right?...

like you can still make phone calls on it, right?

This annoys me.

Apple has made an unlocked version of the iPhone 3G available in Hong Kong, letting consumers pick whichever carrier they so choose.

This is in sharp contrast to Apple's policy for the almost everywhere else on the planet. Unlocked iPhones are rampant worldwide, but that isn't something that Apple has sanctioned.

Freedom doesn't come cheap. The 8GB version is available for about $695 (5,400 Hong Kong dollars), while the 16GB iPhone costs about $798 (6,200 HK dollars), according to Apple's site.

The "iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier," the site states. "Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation."

Not dropping your phone.

Seriously, hard cases are the phone version of the plastic cups with screw-on lids and straws for kids. Just get a screen film and don't act like a clumsy oaf.
Cans of Soda share a similar design in concept with sippy cups, and people choose to drink soda out of cans over soda out of cups in many cases. I just would rather be safer, than stupid looking. Maybe a shoebox would do the trick. Graft on a handle, and I'm corporate casual!

Soft cases then?

It's like putting one of those leather bra's on your car. Don't be that guy.

Well, I kinda like having a case for mine, but it's not really to protect it from drops. I have small palms and slender fingers, so having a bit of extra width on the phone just makes it easier for me to physically handle.
But yeah, the only way to really protect a phone from getting broken is to NOT DROP IT. If a case makes it more likely for you to not lose your grip on it, then I can see the benefit and utility of it, but otherwise you're being very silly and over-protective.

Have you seen the phones they have available in Asia? The iPhone is a joke compared to them and they all cost about the same, if not cheaper than the iPhone. No one would ever get an iPhone on a plan in Hong Kong.
Oh lord, here we go again with the Asian technology superiority complex again. Is the "Asian Cell Phone Defense Force" going to unite itself against the iPhone now?

I don't have a case on my phone and I've dropped it dozens of times. Still works fine with barely any scratches on it.

hi. i used to have agile messenger on my old iphone.

i bought the 3g phone and i cant find agile messenger any where.

does anyone have the source where i can add so i can install it?

thanks

i need something to run my msn and yahoo on my iphone 3g

I just tried the QuickPwn21-1 app and it seemed to work ok, but now my phone is frozen on the pineapple logo (bootup logo)

I've left it for 20 minutes, then held the power and home button till it powered off and now turned it on again - its frozen on that pineapple again

Did this happen to anyone else? I'm looking around for a FAQ or forum online

Sorry for the (most probably) dumb question..

No, not that dumb, you're sweating it a bit and looking for an answer that will keep you from making it worse.

Put the phone in DFU mode and try it again... if you still have problems, use WinPwn to put the firmware to 2.0.2, then use QuickPwn to update to 2.1, if that's possible.

Well.. it finally just booted ok. That was weird..

All my apps etc are still intact so that is a nice bonus

Thanks Terrell !

Luck SOB. I have an expensive leather sleeve for my iPhone, and it dropped once from my desk onto the ground. And now I have a nasty scratch half an inch in my screen. And I'm one of those who is extremely careful with his stuff :(

I am also extremely careful but I'm carrying the phone almost all the time and accidents happen. I'm using the original iPhone and the aluminum casing is especially slippery in my hands. There was one time I dropped it on concrete when I swore it was broken for good because part of the casing popped up, but I snapped it back in place and I never had any problems. I've even submerged it in water (don't ask) and it still works. Mind you that I'm not advocating any kind of carelessness with your phone as I've probably been luckier than most :lol

I'm sure this has been asked a million times, and I am too lazy to go through the thread, is there a store or website selling the protective screen film for a decent price? I just purchased mine last night and the store was selling them for $20, which is ridiculous.

Alright, I'm all jailbroken and good to go.

So far I have:

Cydia
Installer
Boss Prefs
Winterboard
NES Emulator
Video Recorder

What else should I get??

I downloaded and installed KATE but it doesn't work. Dunno whats up with that...

I just thought of a perfect app. It would be nice if you could schedule the time of day when your phone goes into silent mode and automatically takes it out of silent mode at a time you specify. It's always a hassle taking my phone in and out of silent mode when I am at work or at home.

Kate is a piece of shit, remove that immediately! Get Cycorder and Mxtube.

What makes Mxtube different from YouTube??

All these guides are telling me to get BSD Subsystems but I can't find it anywhere? Do I need it?

I also can't get my ROMs to work. I created both folders on the iPhone and SSH-ed the .nes files into the NES folder but they are not coming up when I run the emulator on my iPhone. Any suggestions?

You can download and save the videos with Mxtube. You put them in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/NES it has to be exactly like that, oh and use Diskaid to transfer files to your phone.

I believe MXTube allows you to save the youtube videos onto your phone.

If you're into broadcasting live to the internet from your camera, download Qik, I tried it last night and it was kinda cool, about a 10 second delay from what you're seeing to what's being shown online.

Yeah thats where I'm putting the .nes files but they still aren't coming up on my phone. Maybe I have bad ROMs

Shouldn't be roms be .rom and not .nes?
Unless you're just writing it out that way. :)

Here's my suggestions for Winterboard add-ons you might want.

"Transparent Dock" (use unless the theme you use has a dock pic you like)
"Transparent Sliders" (removes the the background on the slider when your phone is locked, looks much cleaner, especially if you have a nice wallpaper that is obscured by the background.

However, I use "Un-Unlockable", that completey removes the background from the slider, and also the slider itself. You slide to unlock as normal, you just can't see the slider.

I'd take a pic if I could of my lock screen, but it really is the best not to have anything obscured by the slider.

I also use the cute "Zelda Battery" charging meter. It has the little Link hearts that fill up as your battery is charging, with original NES look to them.

What's the best Hard case for the 3G? At risk of screen break screw-age, I want a good case when I get one next month.

I'll put it this way. I have dropped my 3G from about 5 feet onto a hard concrete floor with no ill results of any kind. A hard case for the 3G seems to be a waste unless you are going to drop it from great heights or drop it out the window or a moving car or something.

For a hard case, I purchased a PixelSkin case last night: https://www.speckproducts.com/products/pixelskin/iphone-3g/143. I hope it will bounce off the ground when I drop it out of a hundred story window.

I've dropped my iPhone 3G from waist height, in a hard case, and the phone still went out. It was out for about 3 hours until it magically turned back on. Now, everytime I drop it even a little the screen will go white and I have restart it.

I'll try to one-up you, I was in a high-speed (~45mph) head-on collision in a towncar while using my iPhone and it flew all around the cabin, hitting windows, etc. Landed at my feet and worked perfectly fine for calling 911 (and for a year since).
