Extended BeeJiveIM impressions:

OH, spoke too soon, found my first bug. Nothing earth-shattering, though. Occasionally, when you view a chat, the part that's supposed to have the chat in it goes black, and can't be brought back unless you exit the chat and try and re-view it.
But the option of a Favourites section for your most-contacted buddies is a nice touch, you can assign custom handles (I like putting in their REAL names, not some lousy string of garbage characters that most people use with smileys in it), retains your group hierarchy from whatever IM clients you previously used without any fuss, custom status messages work well, and there's TONS of UI tweaks, like setting the chat background color (though not many choices right now). Oh, and a built-in Help section right in the application (which isn't filled in yet, but I imagine that will only be a matter of time).

EDIT: So what's the verdict, Kohler? Any extra questions?

EDIT 2: Oh, and knowing this will be the most-asked question... yes, if you have MobileMe or ActiveSync, the email notifications it sends are INSTANT, no delay. I got a notification on me email 2 seconds after I closed the app.
I say... $16 well-spent, especially since the BeeJive guys seem to be pretty interested in supporting the app based on their customer needs and are already planning further updates to add smiley support and such.

I'm really, really considering buying the $20 Japanese app tonight as I start up studying 日本語 again, but I'm having a really hard time committing to an app that expensive, as it just seems like eventually it'll have to come down some, even though it looks like an excellent interface for an offline-accessible searchable dictionary.

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=290664053&mt=8

Anyone else have it that can vouch for it?
I don't have it, but it's not bad value when it looks like it has the functionality of those Wordtank electronic dictionaries that are big in Japan, and they're $200+ for a good one. If I was going there imminently I'd definitely be looking at getting it to take with me.

On Beejive, you should post a review on the iTunes Store. I'm not seeing any and now that they've blocked reviews from people who haven't bought it - which means no more bitching about price on every paid app, thank god. I'm thinking about it, but it's still £9.49 for an IM app. Where's my portable Adium? ;_;

I was wondering if there was any programs that I can use to make files ringtones. I'm not really trying to only buy the ones that have. I want the music from Mega Man.

I used to use iToner for ringtones, but recently I've switched to AudialHub, which is the audio version of VisualHub. Use Audacity or something to clip the audio down to 40 seconds or less if you need to, then you just drop it into AudialHub, set the output to AAC, and then choose to have it import the file to iTunes as a ringtone when completed.

The benefit is that it lets you use iTunes to manage them, so you don't lose them all and have to hunt down the originals if you restore the phone or something. Plus it's a great app for converting audio between formats.

Apparently GarageBand now comes with an option to export as a ringtone, but I don't have the latest version and my one doesn't include it.

I prefer to make the ringtones on the phone itself, hence my 'Ringtones' suggestion. Nice lil' app.

What the hell, Apple's removed the "Latest ... Apps" categories from the App Store in iTunes? How am I supposed to look the the most recently added apps now?

Well now I feel like a fucking idiot.

I've always made fun of people who put cases on their iPhones and tonight I dropped mine real hard on the wet concrete in the parking lot. There's now a noticeable scuff mark on the back of the phone (right near the camera). I guess I kinda got lucky all things considered as the camera lens didn't get scratched nor did my touch screen break.

Thinking of getting a case now after this. I just hate how bulky most of them are and how you'd need to remove it every time you dock it etc.
Yeah it sucks.
All it takes is one scratch to make you regret not protecting it.

Look around, there's plenty of cases that aren't bulky or ugly, though they usually cost a little bit more.

But what's the point of protecting the visual appearance by obstructing it? I don't get it.
To me, cases is equivalent to leaving the protective plastic on in that sense.

So.... has anyone taken the plunge on beejive?
It looks like everything an iPhone app should be.. but it's fuuuucking expensive.. though if it was actually usable it would be worth every penny.

Because like I said, some cases aren't obstructive.
Shop around.

The back of my first gen was pristine when I sold it.
Certainly looked a lot better than everyone else who I knew that owned one and sold mine for a lot more as a result.

I've seen a lot of cases, all of them look crap, and the bulky-ing up is more or less inevitable regardless of the design.

The resell argument I get though, if you're into that sort of thing.

iPhone, I went ahead and picked up Beejive. I'm brimming with excitement right now.
It actually works! AIM is so slow and clunky that it's more or less unusable. This is loads better.
Tons of little great interface things.. tons of settings and options. You can stay signed in when the app is off.. After I get over the buyers remorse of 16 fucking dollars! I think it will be the best purchase I've made on the app store.

I actually really hate pretty much all cases out there, but there are a couple I would consider.

When I got the 3G, I only used this small suede pouch to house my phone, I also prefer it naked.
However, a co-worker gave me a brand new Griffin Elan case he purchased from the Apple store as he wanted a different one.

I didn't really want it but I took it anyway.
The front is completely unobstructed, which is good, and the back adds about an extra milimeter (i'm guessing here) so it still feels quite small.
And it's on and off in 3 seconds or less as it's a two part case that simply slides on from each end.

I was going to go back to my suede pouch but I really like being able to place the phone down on any surface and not worrying about scratches and scuffs if it were to slide across the surface from a push or bump.

I may still go back, but I like not worrying about it.
And this is just from a cheap case, there are far more expensive ones that look much sleeker. I may consider those now.

Can I plug my recently jailbroken iPhone into iTunes and sync like normal??
Indeed.

First download AptBackup from Cydia to backup your Cydia apps.
It stores that backup info with your regular iTunes backup just in case.

K, thanks.

Also, my friend has a jailbroken and unlocked iphone on Tmobile.

Can she plug her phone into my iTunes and sync all my music to her phone?

If not, how could we go about getting all my music onto her phone??

Yes, she can plug in to your computer and sync it, however it will erase any music and videos she had on there from her computer.

If she syncs back up with her computer later, it will erase the music/videos from your computer.

Can only sync to one computer at a time.

I have the most current firmware and version of iTunes, will my iTunes brick her 2.0 firmware when I plug it into my computer??

She is not synced with any other computer.

Also, How would I go about getting her the 2.1 Firmware?? What do I have to download on her phone before I can install 2.1??

When you connect her phone, iTunes will simply detect that she doesn't have the most current FW and will begin to download the newest one for you.
It should then backup the phone (very important) and install the new FW.

Then restore so she gets her stuff back.

If you want to unlock/jailbreak her phone (and you'll have to, since she's using T-Mobile), just do it in the same way you did yours. Easy instructions all over the net (www.iclarified.com)

She's already jailbroken/unlocked but she only has firmware 2.0. iTunes will update her phone to 2.1 with no problem? Won't it brick it?

Nah, when you update a jailbroken phone with iTunes, it simply restores it to factory settings.

Jailbreaking this phone is the best decision I ever made.

This is the stuff I have on now:

Blackout UI color scheme and Macbook Black keyboard

Black Neon Agua main theme

I'm seeing some unbelievable custom stuff online but I don't think I'm gonna dive too deep into making my own themes.

Seriously ? Those are all ghastly.

(imo)

yeah I've never really seen a theme I like
I just have pulled a few icons from here and there, and have a few I've actually made.
Default dock and background with icon labels off.

-Finder icon for the Phone
-Screwdriver and Wrench icon for Documents
-HDD icon for Messages
-Why is the iCal icon so huge ?

What moron did this theme ? It makes me angry that people would take something with such an advanced and well thought out user interface and replace it with complete trash.

Most are definitely ghastly as you stated, best to make your own.

I like only the most subtle and minimal of themes. I want it to stay as sleek as possible.

I can't get over what's going on in that last one. The text is red which is already bad enough (am I supposed to be afraid of clicking the icon because it's giving me a red error/stay the fuck away vibe?), but somehow they made the text blurry as shit. It's like they made it as shitty as possible on purpose.

It completely ruins the look of the phone. I wouldn't want to look at that UI all the time.

I'd like to note that I am not praising these designs for their practicality or usefulness. I am merely praising their customization.

I would not use any of these themes either.
