To scrobble your music on your phone, you need to jailbreak it.

I know, I am jailbroken. Sorry, to clarify. I cant seem to get the Cydia app, scrobbleD, to work on 2.2, when it worked fine before. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, still not working :(

Anyone pick up the new in ear headphones yet? They're now available. I know the volume control wont work on the iPhone, but I want to make sure that the mic and call switch do, and that the plug is narrow enough for the 2G.

I just downloaded that ATT wifi finder app that KungFu recommended, it's definitely a must have.
What does it do that the phone doesn't already do?

Or is it some kind of "here are wifi hotspots in your area" type map?

Engadget just posted their impressions and a gallery of the new headphones.

We've been wanting to get some extended face time with Apple's In-Ear Headphones (yes, that's the product name) ever since we spied them at the company's Fall "Let's Rock" event. Of course, they didn't exactly hit the scene on time, and we were starting to get suspicious. Tack on the rumor they wouldn't be compatible with iPhones, and we felt downright indignant. Imagine our surprise, then, at the discovery that they not only sound really, really good (warm lows and crisp highs, a distinct lack of that modern, pushy mid-range), but they do work with the iPhone (the 3G we've got here, at least). Regular playback is a charm, and we had no problem making and receiving calls with the buds and attached mic -- though strangely the remote doesn't seem operable on the phone, thus deflating our excitement ever-so-slightly. Regardless, the sound quality is pretty boss for the price (besting other, more expensive models we've checked out), and they're a huge step up from Apple's previous offerings. Check out some looks at the beauties in the gallery below.

Edit: So Engadget findings contradict the Apple support article regarding the clicker button.

I'm thinking he meant the volume didn't work, not the clicker, it's just not clear what he means. Half of the commenters are just as confused, so I'd wait for an update.

And what is with the moron patrol on Engadget claiming these are overpriced? They are cheaper than the closest competitors product by $20-$30.

Will a firmware update to the iPhone allow it to work with the new headphones? Seems like it could be a possibility.

No. The new headphones have an extra connector ring on them to transmit volume control data. You'd need to add an extra receiver contact to the phone to get it to work.

Apple was at first adamant that they were "not compatible" with the iPhone. Recently they admitted that everything except the volume buttons would work.

We'll see. The physical interface for the connector is the same so I haven't given up hope.

As long as the clicker works, that's fine for me. I plan on getting a new iPhone when they make the bump to 32GB anyway, and I'm sure they'll add the functionality then.

Ahh... gotcha. I already have an adapter that turns any headphones into a mic and adds the pause and next track buttons for the first gen iPhone. I can wait until I upgrade to the 3rd gen for these I think.

Without it, to connect to an ATT hotspot you must login online and wait for a text message to be sent to you...from what I understand. This app just asks for your phone number and boom your connected to their free hotspots. Shaves minutes off of the wait.

The Engadget impressions have been updated just like I thought.

The clicker and mic both work perfectly, volume doesn't. I am now go for purchase.

Not sure how many folks are into spending a lot for a phone case, but maybe you have people on your holiday list who like these things. Or maybe you do. Or you like to point and laugh at people who spend $80 on a phone case.

At any rate, the Vaja Black n' Red Limited Edition is back in stock.

I've got a Vaja (got it for Christmas last year) and it's great.

Do you have a screen protector on your windshield?

Anyway, any of those screen film things would be fine. They reduce the glare and do a decent job of keeping the screen from being all fingerprint smudges.

I don't carry my windshield around with me everywhere I go nor do I constantly poke at it with my thumbs. I've found a lot of cases that come with screen protectors anyway so I'll most likely get one of those. So far case-mate.com and hdaccessory.com are the only decent sites I've found that have a wide selection of sub $50 cases. Any others?

It's hard for me to imagine myself not regretting spending more than $50 on a case.

I'm getting the iPhone next week. I have to unlock it because I'm on T-mobile's network. Are there any issues I should know about using it with T-Mobile? What are the best apps to use from the app store?

Also, is it worth jailbreaking? I hear there aren't any risks involved but are there enough applications to warrant all the trouble of jailbreaking it?
Anyone?

What Dez wrote. Also if the 3G you buy comes with the 2.2 baseband installed it's unlikely you'll be able to find a software unlock method in the near future. The only other option is looking for a hardware solution (you buy a chip and attach it to your simcard - yes it's as bad as it sounds). Your best bet is probably to pay the full price for an official unlocked phone.

About jailbreaking - you'll need to do that to soft unlock your phone anyway. Besides that it's definitely worth it for video recording, tethering etc

does the flip part stay permanently attached so that it hangs down while you use it all the time?

Does Apple do anything for people that like headphones rather than earbuds? Or is there a 3rd party headphone that will allow me to pause playback? I don't care about volume control, I just wanna be able to stop playback without pulling the thing out of my pocket, sliding to unlock, and hitting the pause button. I guess yanking out the headphones works in a pinch, but I'd rather have a more proactive solution.

Double click home and tap pause. You don't have to slide to unlock. Otherwise, you're out of luck. Most people prefer earbuds for the convenience of portability. I've never seen headphones with iPhone controls.

you dont have to unlock to pause ;) just double click home.

In all seriousness though, doesn't the shure mic cable extender thing have a click button for pause/play/answer?
EDIT:
Something like this
http://www.newertech.com/products/iph14.php

unfortunately you are bound to have extremely long cable after this, though if you had some headphones or cans with a replaceable cable you could potentially get a shorter one.

Personally I am still looking for a male-male 3.5 mm stereo cable with the pause button function on it for car use since I use an aux input to play my iphone in the car.

So go with the 2G? That's cool because I can get it cheaper anyway.

I see the iPhone can not use normal earphones. When I first got an iPod, I thought the headphones were horrible. I'm guessing the earphones that come with it are the same?

Also, why not get a screen protector? I've seen scratches on iPhones before. I'd think it'd be a good idea.

So my friend has a jailbroken, unlocked 1st gen iPhone. Not sure what firmware version or anything.

What would I need to do to get it up to date, but obviously still jailbroken and unlocked?

Edit: Oh, the 2G? Yeah you might need an adapter for the recessed jack if you want to use different headphones.

Are you sure about this?
I've heard conflicting reports but I think the consensus is that the connector on the new in-ear is the same as the old headphones, i.e. four connections: left, right, ground and mic.

I really need some help here.

I have a first gen jailbroken iPhone (ziphone + tmobile) and today when I dropped my iPhone on the carpet (on the CARPET and I have a solid case on it!) the home button stopped working. It still makes the click sound but I can not get to the home screen at all. I've tried holding it, pushing it a few times and no luck.

This is a major problem and since it's jailbroken I can't go into Apple for help. I've had the phone for over a year and have had no problems until today.

Has anyone heard of this issue before? Am I totally screwed?

Way, way, way back in the days of the 3G iPod, Apple sold an inline remote that let you use any pair of headphones you wanted.

It completely blows my mind why they don't bring that back, especially when their two best products are touch-based and there's a clear demand for some kind of solution to the problem.

Unjailbreak it and take it to Apple.

So I just bought an iPhone 3g. I was planning to Jailbreak but the following note on the QuickPwn site scares me:

GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone and want potential soft unlock in the near future do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool

What's this all about? It was my understanding that jailbreaking an iPhone could always be undone through iTunes. Is that not true?

Am I going about this the wrong way entirely?

My phone is now not even charging correctly. I plug it to the wall or computer, it looks like it's charging for a little bit and then starts back up at the home screen with a "10% battery remaining" message. A few seconds later, the Apple logo appears and this cycle continues.

What's going on?

I believe he can just update it in iTunes, or use the Pwnage tool to build a custom ipsw update file.

My phone is an unlocked, 1st gen phone. The iPhone dev team blog said to just update (from 2.1 to 2.2) in iTunes, I didn't need a special program.

That message is talking about a possible soft unlock solution that might be coming soon to users who haven't updated to the newest firmware. If you have any interest in unlocking your phone, don't update. This has nothing to do with jailbreaking.

I don't even know if he has 2.0 or newer. Is it really safe to update via iTunes?

Is there a way to set certain numbers to always ring? I turn my phones to silent every night but would like to allow family/close friends to contact me at any time.

So what if you have a unlocked iPhone 3G already, will a jailbreak worry it?

Oh, so they think they can get software unlock working on a previous version of the firmware and not the new one? If that's the case, the ship has sailed. iTunes asked me to update my firmware and I went ahead and did it.

You can update as long as you do it to a version of 2.2 made with PwnageTool with the option to keep the 2.1 baseband file enabled. If you update to 2.2 without using that option, which isn't available in QuickPwn, you can't go back and it could be a long wait before the software unlock.

So I havea NZ iPhone 3G, which is supposedly fully unlocked. I have arrived in US (Northwest) would like something like a prepay plan, as I may not be here for more than a year.

What is the going thing to do? Currently, I am leaning towards an AT&T prepay. Verizon has probably the nicest plan, but with no GSM, it's definitely no go. T-mobile doesn't work with the 3G side of the iPhone, but supposedly works with the edge part. T-mobile seems to have a better set up for minutes, but absolutely no data. Then again AT&T have a ridiculous pricing for data on prepay, so maybe that doesn't matter.

It would be nice to occasionally check email or something, though.

So I'm at work and I want to get an mp3 on my phone.

No cable. Song is available online. Any way I can do this or am I waiting till I get home?
