just wondering how to:

a) save podcasts on the iphone
b) open link in new window and have it background load in safari.

a) download the podcast from the iTunes app.

b) you can open a new window from the button on the bottom right in mobile safari. No background loading.

Does anyone know whatever happened to third-party apps having push-notifications? They quietly never released this feature after hyping it up a lot.

You sure it's possible to download podcasts directly from the itunes app on the iphone? I thought that wasn't possible. I just tried it again today and there are no podcasts, maybe i'm doing it wrong.

You are.

It was added in 2.2.

I bought the Apple in ear headphones, and they sound fantastic with my iPhone. Anybody else pick them up?

I have them, and they're great. But I hope the volume controls work with the iPhone soon.

There have been issues that Apple has run into apparently, one of the most prominent being that it absolutely annihilates the battery life. It's still coming, but it's a case of 'when it's done' rather than 'by this date'.

What is the best twitter application on iPhone?
I like TwitterFon. I like the simple interface and it does everything I want it to do very quickly. Plus it's free, which is always nice :D

I recently got a, from what I can tell 2nd gen iTouch with the 2.2 firmware and I keep hearing about jailbreaking.. is it still impossible to do this on this type of iTouch? Some of the features and improvements that it offers would be mighty handy.

No, only the first gen. And it probably won't be done anytime soon if ever. Also, it's not called an iTouch.

From everything I read, it's a hardware issue, so it can't be fixed until the next revision. I bought the earbuds knowing that, so it's not an issue for me. I figure when I upgrade to a 32GB iPhone(Please soon), i'll gain the functionality.

Anyone else have an issue where you try to add a photo onto a contact directly through the contacts app and while it tries to save the photo it just quits to the home screen?

Actually, quite a few of my apps just randomly quit to the main screen.

Is there a cause for this?

Epix, have you tried ESPN.com? They have a really good mobile page, and you can add your favorite teams for easy tracking.

Have you tried to hard reset your iPhone (Home button + power button for 10 seconds)? This seems to solve a lot of random crash issues.

You have to call up ATnT and tell them to enable MMS on your plan.

I think you end up paying 25c a picture.

That's preposterous. I had MMS on my shitty shitshit RAZR without any additional fees yet they can't include it as part of the iphone tax I'm paying? Bah.

Well look what we have here!

Rumor sites are abuzz this morning with news from the Far East noting that two Taiwanese chip manufacturers will likely receive orders for a new "iPhone nano."

Taiwan's Economic Daily News ran a story suggesting that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and United Microelectronics Corporation will win contracts for iPhone nano components.

MacRumors suggests that the device might not be headed for the United States, either: this device could be released first in China. American Technology Research analyst Brian Marshall says that the device is not being tested by AT&T. In September, rumors suggested that China Mobile asked Apple for a limited version of the iPhone, omitting Wi-Fi and 3G networking.

This comes on the heels of a screenshot sent in by tipster John, which shows a device labeled "iPhone nano" appearing in the iTunes Connect service used by App Store developers. Earlier, drawings of protective cases surfaced inside China's manufacturing community.

Shaking the magic eight-ball, all signs point to yes. While clearly not ready for Macworld last week, the same Economic Daily News report notes that a new iPhone device might be slated for a June release at the earliest.
Not enough "I told you so"s for this little nugget. The stuff about China Mobile appeasing is something I never considered, though.

Combined with the new LG 5-year display panel contract for OLEDs, things are looking really good right now no matter how you slice it.

Instead of trying to gloat by saying rumors are the truth why don't you wait until it actually happens? With the last rumor people forgot to say that macrumors also updated the next day saying the case company stopped production in fears of the rumor being false and losing a lot of money. It's far from confirmed.

Oh, how quickly we forget. Seriously, Apple really sucks at keeping secrets nowadays so if you have enough evidence from similar sources... 2+2=4.

And how quickly you forget that not every rumor becomes fact. Why do you think the stock drops after the keynote? The products usually don't live up to the rumors. I'm not saying it will never happen or this isn't true but just because one rumor was right a year or so ago doesn't mean this is. You seem overly eager to celebrate something that still hasn't been proven.

OK... I could go find all the links that show about 80-90% of Apple rumors in the past 2 years being true (though not released when expected) so long as they're not based on idle speculation from fans and media with no actual impartial sources to them, but hey, if you want me to stifle it, I'll stifle it. Just means I'm never gonna let anyone who told me to STFU live it down when it actually happens. I'd be willing to bet a perma-ban on it, at this point, but I doubt anyone would take me up on it.

wow, Terrell. You're already saying "i told you so"? based on another rumor??

wait until this shit actually comes out before making those claims.

rumors from asian manufacturers come out all the fucking time. they're not always real.

I was re-watching the conference where Jobs introduced the iPhone, and he wasn't too keen on the slide out keyboards. Now I believe the iPhone Nano will have a virtual keyboard, BUT it will have the accelerometer activate the keyboard to rotate in SMS and emails, at the same time the classic & 3G iPhones will also get that software update.

The iPhone nano will be too small to only have a vertical keyboard; that is IF there even is an iPhone nano

I think you meant to say another TWO rumors occurring in the same week with no Apple event in sight to automatically signal it's being faked.

But I was told to stifle.

Yeah, this is possible. It's just a completely irrelevant product to anyone with some sense, hence the backlash against Terrel. If Apple want's to make a tard pack, then whatever, but they better introduce a 32GB real iPhone at the same time. I need to upgrade my old 2g.

I gotta admit, I really did not expect Apple to release standalone browsers on the app store.

Considering the early submission dates for these projects, it appears that thee was a lot of back and forth about the subject within Apple.

I took a quick look at the browsers out now and the only one that seems interesting is the one where you can queue up links in new tabs for reading.

But now I'm more interested in the likes of, say, Opera submitting an app to the store.

From what I understand, these aren't standalone browsers, but just modifications of Safari Mobile which is an API. Or something. Maybe I'm just talking out of my buttocks.

yeah. they should combine all those separate features into one app. i just want a browser with adblock (or flash) but weblink queing is nice (i don't think myfox in cydia has that)

It also opens the door for other big-name browsers like Firefox and Opera to try and get on the device, both of which we know are trying to do just that.
Update: It's just been brought to my attention that all of the third party browsers released were based on the same version of WebKit used by Mobile Safari. That means that they are all essentially the same browser at the core. The third party ones are kind of like a Safari plug-in that can only be used one at a time. This means that browsers like Firefox and Opera may still not stand a chance in the App Store approval process, as neither browser are WebKit-based.

:(

Alright, when I lock my iPhone there is a little black line that appears on the screen for a split second before the screen goes entirely blank; it usually happens when I'm locking it while already on the lock screen (at least that I've noticed). I was just wondering if this occurs on everyone elses phone? I've seen some people say yes, and others no, so I was curious to see what the people on here have...

What are you guys using to send Picture text messages? I try to do it from email but it never lets me attach anything from the phone itself when I click on the attach button.

Are you trying to do this from the mail app, or clicking the picture itself and hitting "Email Photo"?

At first I was trying to do it from the email app, then the browser with no luck, so after a few minutes with google I figured out that you can do it from the photo section. I had no idea you could do that up until today and I've had the phone for months.

How come when I plug in my headphones (nothing is playing on the iPod part) it automatically starts playing a playlist that shuffles all of my music? Can this be disabled?

This is a bug or problem with your hardware. It won't happen when you use a headphone with mic.. and it happens for some iphones with some standard headphones. It's annoying as hell, if you get your phone replaced, it might work fine.. or buy a mic adapter for your headphones.

RichardSolo show discounts still in effect
If you were wandering the halls of Macworld Expo last week, you might have seen a familiar face -- no, not the everpresent TUAW video crews, but the gadget-loving visage of Richard Thalheimer, founder of The Sharper Image and current head honcho of RichardSolo. The RS booth was a brief walk away from The Sharper Image's floor presence, but I believe maturity prevailed and no miniature helicopters or USB missile launchers were seen to buzz the competition's displays.

The RichardSolo iPhone and iPod extended-life batteries were visible at the show on attendees' iPhones, and most people visiting the booth seemed to be satisfied customers or would-be customers (Steve reviewed the latest model in November). Buyers at the show were eligible for a $30 discount on the original and newer 1800 models, but if you missed that opportunity you can still save: through the end of January, use coupon code 'Macworld' at checkout and get $20 off either product (usually $50US for the lower-capacity model and $70US for the 1800 model).

There's a good list of still-running Macworld Expo discounts at dealmac, but if you know of any that aren't on the list, shout them out.
Seems like a steal but why don't they make them in white? I'm leaning towards these types of batteries (instead of the cases) since they should work with future models of the iPhone. DaringFireball reviews of The Richard Solo 1800 iPhone/iPod Backup Battery and The Richard Solo 1800 iPhone/iPod Backup Battery.

You mean it starts playing automatically?

My iPhone didn't start automatically, but if I had synced it it always started at this one particular song and I thought it went random from there - but just today, I found out that it was actually by song order.
