Just saw that you can get the 'emoji' from the Japanese iPhones on to any iPhone without hacking now.. instructions here.

I tried it this afternoon before upgrading to 2.2.1 and it worked awesome. :lol

sweet, i ran the update, there was an error #9, so had to restore from backup, and now i have copy over all my apps, mp3s, photos, etc.

the best part is all the photos for my contacts? GONE.

fuck you apple

I noticed in 2.2.1 that when you switch tabs in mobile Safari, it doesn't reload/refresh the page you switch to anymore. Sweet :D

It never always refreshed, only if it had received a low memory warning since the last time you viewed the tab. Bet it still has to reload them, though maybe a little less frequently (dumping one cached page per warning instead of all of them maybe)

What else is popular in cases?

So far I've found..

-Incipio Feather
-goincase
-switcheasy
-griffintechnology
-vaja
-pants pocket

I'd like something with screen protection. I see some candidates. But nothing is OMG sexy.

Did you sync right before you updated to get a current backup? I actually did a DFU mode upgrade which wipes everything out, I then restored from backup and everything is back to the way it was (minus the music).

Your pocket.

You know what though I've been carrying more of a static charge lately this winter. When I carry my iphone in my pocket and walk in my slacks sometime I can feel the static electricity and when I reach into my pocket the iphone has been switched on (like when you press the sleep/wake button).

I think it's the static electricity can this hurt the iphone (3G)?

edit: what about this? http://store.apple.com/us/product/TT822LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0NA&mco=MjQzNTE2Mg

Finally decided to jailbreak my 3g yesterday and i'm really glad I did. I'm using a Winterboard theme (same one as Zozz posted earlier) and I want to know how to change app icons, can anyone help me with that? I'm doing the whole SSH thing to access the iphone files but I have no idea what i'm doing wrong.

Example: I'm trying to change the Remote app icon. Is it named icon.png? I would assume it is and I copied over that with the new icon I made but the icon is still the same on my phone and won't change. Also, why can't I view the png files I copy to my pc from the app folder? Because not all apps have the icon named as "icon.png" and I can't even view the file to see if it is the icon or not. Total noob when it comes to this stuff.

edit: nvm figured it out.

+1 iphone!!

where are some awesome/sexy cases?
I have a Black and Red case from Vaja and I love it.

It was pretty expensive though for a case, but to me it was worth it because I wanted my phone to look a little different (seeing as how everyone has one these days).

Bought my case. Vaja Black n' Red. So sessy.

Alright, so, is their a '3G essentials' post anywhere that I can be directed to? Like essential Apps, settings for better battery life, etc.

Oh wait, I need to decide if I want to jail break it or not.

So I'm confused about jailbreaking...

PwnageTool vs QuickPwn vs WinPwn? Are there any others? What's the difference?

Also, my 3g Iphone is brand new, so it has the latest firmware. Seems like there is a problem with unlocking on the latest version? I don't need to unlock tho..

Basically, you should be using QuickPwn unless you want to do custom firmwares or something fancy. You cannot jailbreak or unlock on the latest firmware yet. Check settings, general, about -> version.. if you're at 2.2(5g77) or below, you should be ok. 2.2.1 is the latest.

Ok, I see, thanks.

I got it the 28th, and .1 released the 27th. I don't have my phone on me right now to check because i'm waiting on a case to arrive and haven't bought the protection plan yet. I guess I have to wait unless you can downgrade?

It's unlikely that your iphone got packaged with the new firmware. Unless they upgraded it for you in the store. And apparently, you cannot downgrade your firmware (i assume, otherwise there wouldn't be such warnings not to upgrade)

I'm glad it's unlikely. Yeah, I see the warning now here(How they want you to wait for their custom 2.2.1 firmware.).

I don't think this has been mentioned in this iPhone thread yet but a game that has been getting a lot of attention in the Gaming iPhone thread lately is WordJong. There's an official thread in the gaming side too, check it out!

So, I checked out my new Iphone's firmware. It's apples 2.2(5g77). Will there be a problem jailbreaking it since it's not a custom firmware?

If there's no problem, I assume I follow these steps?
http://www.iphonehacks.com/2009/01/jailbreak3g-win.html
"If your iPhone 3G firmware Version is 2.2 (5G77) and Modem Firmware is 02.28.00 then you are ready to jailbreak your iPhone 3G, you can skip directly to "Jailbreak iPhone 3G using QuickPwn" below. "

did it work? Don't see any reason why it wouldn't except maybe the newest mac laptops win the latest osx update...

Otherwise are there any page reload bookmarklets that can be installed on the iPhone?

And what would be the killer apps for a bigger iPhone/iPod touch or a mac tablet? An ebook reader? Drawing + handwriting recognition tech?

Arrrrrrghghghghhghgh. My iPhone won't sync with my machine.

It gets to the portion where it transfers the purchases from my phone back to iTunes, and the progress bar stops moving. Actually, that implies that it started moving. It doesn't. I've had it sitting there for over an hour now. I've googled and found nothing that's helped.

Anyone know what's going on? I've rebooted everything involved several times.

did you buy anything large? just delete on the phone and download on itunes i've downloaded huge things and it would take like 30 minutes to sync

I've downloaded things that I needed to be connected to wifi for, but I don't know how large they are exactly.

I'll try that out. iTunes in generally has been flaky on my MBP lately. I might have to just use the Windows (ugh) version.

Bought an iPhone today!! Woo hoo! Excited.

Did not get a data package, but have WiFi at home and work, and downtown has hot spots like crazy so decided to save some cash.

I have the same case. It really is awesome and helps to make your phone look a little different than the other 13 million iPhone out there.

I would suggest turning off wifi and bluetooth when you are not using them as they kill the battery life. 3G is also a battery killer. It seems like the phone gets 2x as much battery life when not in a 3G area or when you turn it off.

If you live in a area that has a lot of 3G coverage I would suggest getting a cheap car charger (make sure it is made specifically for the 3G).

As for apps, I love the following: Amazon, NeoGAF (web app), ESPN (web app), Facebook, yelp, Where, Showtimes, The Weather Channel (web app), and I love the game Penguin lite.

did you buy it second hand? You cannot buy an iphone from at&t or apple without a data plan.

Any recommendations on Iphone headphones? I like that button, but hate Apple's headphones.

Ultimate ears has a range of quality headphones with iphone clicker/ mics. (from $130 to $450!)

the new super.fi 5vi are awesome.

I had the v-moda vibes a while back but disliked them. very expensive for bassy sound with not much clarity.

there's also some good ones from etymotic (hf2).

there's also the apple in-ear models that are supposed to be quite good and are less than 100. they also have the clicker/ mic.

Nope, brand new. I am in Canada...Rogers. Here you can get one without data.

I was going to ask GAF about this. My wife was interested in an iPhone but she is not interested in the data plan (I don't understand it either).

Is it possible to do this with an unlocked 2G phone? She is already on AT&T, I just wanted to know if she could just slide in a sim card and have it working right out of the box.

Yes, I had an unlocked 2G phone at first and you can run the phone without the EDGE network login info entered. you'll never be able to get on the network and incur accidental charges.

check the goodness of the usb port on your machine. also, check the iph for oxidation over the device port - i had an ipt replaced for that - would charge, but would not sync at all, or would accidentally sync but really, really seldomly, often with hang-ups in the middle of the sync. and basically, a word of advice - take care of your iph/ipt device port, as that thing is the achilles heel of the series.

So today I decided that I'm going to get an iPhone when my windfall of money comes in March. But I have a question.

I'm already in a contract with AT&T, not up for upgrade until 4/30, but I'll be able to buy the phone in the 1st or 2nd week of March. Since I have to sign a new 2 year deal anyway, do I have to wait until then, or can I get it in March?

thx! :)

Guys, really stupid question.

How do turn this thing off at night? I don't need it on at night at all - just wondering how to shut it off - is it off when it is in the "stand by" mode or a real turn off when you hold it down and then do the slide to power it off?

Just wondering if there is any disadvantage to the full power off every day - just noticed it takes awhile to load whn I turned it on if I power down.

Also, any auto on and auto off mode like my old blackberry pearl?

battery still drains in standby... approximately 12 days it would take until it would die

hold it down to power off completely

Ok. I updated to 2.2.1 the other day. Tonight I've been browsing GAF using the Neogaf app for over 2 hours and I haven't had one crash. I've been going in and out of various threads, even heavy picture laden ones like the Hot Women thread and the January desktop thread. I actually think Apple finally got Safari stable on this thing. This phone just keeps better and better. :D
