What kind of benefits do I get from jailbreaking? Interesting things I've heard about are tethering and 3rd party apps not available on the apps store. Though I'm sure there are more benefits. Please let me know.

Also should I buy the extended warranty for my phone? I guess this would be pointless since jailbreaking voids the warranty. But does apple notice?

How risky is jailbreaking and how easy is it to do? I should use quickpwn right? I'm not interested in unlocking, just jailbreaking.

Also how often do these batteries go out? Is it inevitable that I will need to replace the battery by sending it into Apple?

I'm talking about an early termination fee. You should save ~$120 overall instead of the ideal $200. Better than not saving anything, and better than waiting half a year IMO.

That's why I asked, I'm sure we'll see some new functionality, but I'm tired of being like the only person on this earth not able to use a good browser on my phone, and all other cool smart-phone things. I know it's probably going to be a nice upgrade, multiple cores, more memory, camera w/flash (ZOMG!), but I think I could live without that provided that limited multi-tasking is added to the 3G. Copy/paste will probably be a software update, so that doesn't worry me either. I just want to see what rumors start happening in a few weeks to see if it's really worth it to wait. But I really want an iPhone.
Well, there's all these rumors about a new hardware SKU showing up in app stat data provided to developers. They've been seeing a steady increase of instances of "iPhone2,1" showing up. For those unfamiliar with the product identification numbering scheme:

iPhone: iPhone1,1
iPhone 3G: iPhone1,2

So the existence of an "iPhone2,1" would indicate a hugely substantial hardware change to differentiate it from previous models, as a change in the first numeral has always indicated a substantial change to the main chipset/board on their other products, whereas the 3G was merely a change to baseband components (3G and GPS) and appearance.

So yeah... WAIT.

I picked up a 8GB 3G iPhone today. What are some of the Apps I should get? And how do I change what is on the front of the phone (i.e. I don't need a YouTube link, for example).

This post is the new "here are my custom designs."

To move the YouTube button, hold your finger on it, then drag it off the screen onto a new screen.

Deadbeef, if you don't really use youtube on your phone, you can remove the icon, but you won't be able to watch youtube links either. I rarely do anyway.
Settings > General > Turn on (make a code) > Turn off Youtube.

This removes the icon.
I used to this also remove iTunes, but have since put it back ever since streaming of podcasts over 3G became enabled.

That's jailbreak stuff.

I've thought about getting an iPhone recently, even with the possible big upgrade coming later in the year.

I don't own anything by apple right now. I've tried to stay off the bandwagon but I might have to give them a shot. My one concern is mostly about putting music on the iphone. Does it have to be from itunes? I heard the stuff from the store is now drm free which is nice but can I use music I currently have on my pc? Stuff like ogg or flac?

Music isn't the main reason why I would get their phone. It would just be nice to play my own stuff instead of rebuying everything.

iTunes is capable of playing these files since Quicktime supports playback of these files, but it requires light tinkering to iTunes to get them to play there without being converted first.
FLAC is not supported by iPhone, and Apple favors their own Lossless format due to their format decoding faster and being less demanding of the hardware. And Vorbis? Well... it's an open-source codec that a lot of people don't use because few to no hardware manufacturers support it on portable players, so I guess Apple just never bothered to support it.

ogg and flac, no. Those formats are damn obscure and are barely supported by the mainstream players.

but mp3 and aac are supported as well as apple's own lossless format. I recommend high bitrate aac.

you won't have to rebuy any music. that misconception should have been debunked 8 years ago, man. (honestly not sure why you had to ask here instead of just checking apple's itunes page or checking a wiki....)

but if you want to use a wider variety of music players moving forward, you may want to convert those formats to mp3 or aac.

I jailbroke my iphone yesterday successfully. I like some of the new apps I have access to.

Currently installed:

BossPrefs
Clippy (Copy and Paste)
Cycorder
Flashlight (nice and bright!)
Quickgold (launcher)
Snapture (new camera app)
Weathericon (the weather icon actually shows the weather now!)
Winterboard (themes)

One problem I'm having is with Snapture. Everytime I try the 3 shot feature it says it is low on memory. I don't have that much background stuff running though...

Not an iphone but ipod touch 2G. Can we still talk about touch here?

Anyway, what exactly does jail breaking do? And how can I do it? I would like to get some emulators to play the old nintendo games on it. Its still on fw2.2

Why not just convert your FLAC to Apple Lossless or MP3?

I don't think Liu Kang's alluding to anything about quality comparisons. He's just saying Mikey can easily transcode his existing FLAC collection to AAC or MP3 instead of having to repurchase everything.

It would if most of the people who read this thread cared.

Still, if music is only secondary for a potential iPhone purchaser, re-encoding just a subset of one's music to throw onto the iPhone seems sensible.

I buy a lot of content on iTunes because frankly, CDs are a waste of space.

I upgraded by library to iTunes and the difference is pretty noticeable, especially since I have high-grade earphones.

I really want to go back and rerip the CDs I do own and put them in Lossless.

On another note, I'm glad I'll be able to Jailbreak my iPhone and use it in Japan next month with Softbank. Just have to buy a regular Softbank phone/plan with a different cellphone. :D

So I noticed Circuit City now has at least 25% off of their car audio decks, and I'd like to get one that is compatible with my (1st gen) iPhone. Does anyone have any recommendations? I don't need crazy iPod-specific displays necessarily, just something that'll allow me to play music/podcasts in good quality and maybe charge the phone at the same time.

Long story short, my iphone decided to take a swim early this week. I let it dry out, put it in a bag of rice, and low and behold, the thing actually works. Sort of. There is no water damage to the touch screen from what I can tell. However, within five minutes of being unplugged from a charger, it stops working. Sounds like my battery is shot correct?

I'm surprised that the thread hasn't budged yet, but maybe you missed the news that Google announced its licensure of MS Exchange today and is now offering Push Contact and Calendar syncing OTA via Exchange and readily connectable in Address Book, iCal, and Google's web apps.

I had a lot of fun setting this up for myself tonight and I've gotta say, it works GREAT.

damn them not supporting push mail! argh :P

Figured this would be the best place to ask. I want to unload my iPhone. I can't afford the $90 a month payment anymore since I've been laid off from my previous employment. I found new work but I don't make as much and I'm trying to save to return to the city to find more gainful employment. How hard would it be to sell the phone and furthermore, how much is ATT going to wrap me for ditching them? I'm not happy with the service they provide one bit. Guess I'm trying to ask: how hard is it to sell an iPhone and what would I need to do to get rid of ATT?

You're right, you labeled it wrong. I've never even looked at this Restrictions thing.
Ah, I just noticed I forgot the "Restrictions" part of my post.
I always miss words when posting from the phone.

But yes, just simple parental controls that can remove icons from view.

does anyone know how to transfer photos from the iphone (not in the camera roll) to a pc?

i backed up pictures from my pc to the iphone before i re-installed and now i'm trying to get them back from the iphone onto the computer. syncing only gets me the pictures in camera roll, but i have more photos in other photos that i cannot access.

i'm trying touchcopy but it won't even recognize the iphone.

Oh man, no flash is going to have people bitching. I have a 3G and unless this thing gives me the ability to remotely drive my spaceship, I'll wait for the next iteration.

hardware-wise, I'm fine with this model for at least 1 more year. possibly two.

what I'm looking forward to is a 64GB model. plus fast CPU/ more Ram to reduce further app crashing (although that's pretty good now with 2.2.1)

I don't need a better camera nor do I need a secondary video conferencing cam. honestly, Apple has gotta have some major tricks up their sleeve if they want the bulk of 3G owners to upgrade soon.

I've got an EDGE phone, but if the new one has video conferencing, I'm in for two of them.

Also, that Oregon Trail screen looks awesome

hi
few questions (new to the party)

-how can i change background, icons , on 2.2 (jailbreak)
-is there any way to go "home" button without closing the application (then resume)
-how can i be sure that a failed download (like 90%) is deleted? any "temp" storage?
-i use videora ipod converter for my video and yet i cant drag them on itune , how come?

thanks

I'm in the same boat. Passed on the 3G to wait for the real upgrade, which by early indications is going to come this year. The fact that the new hardware is listed as 2,1 shows that it's more of a substantial upgrade than adding 3G and GPS last year, and I'll most likely be glad I waited.

The back of the phone doesn't matter a whole lot to me, so I really don't care if that's a real case design or not. It's going to be all about what on the inside. Hopefully faster CPU and more RAM, plus some nice upgrades to the feature set.

And yeah, I'm probably going to have to buy that Oregon Trail game when it's released. :lol

1. The simplest way is to use winterboard, after you download it from cydia. you can then find themes and other things like that in cydia and apply them through winterboard.

2. download backgrounder from cydia.

3. It doesn't.

4. IDK

-Backgrounder is the best it can be right now, nothing else.

-All failed downloads don't get stored elsewhere they're not saved.

-You can't change the landscape, but if you really wanted to, I'm sure it would require you doing a lot of technical work.

-just do it manually.

you have too many questions that can easily be answered by google and specific iPhone mod forums. Google, use it.

I do not recommend backgrounder. It only works for ~15 minutes and causes a whole bunch of other glitches.
