So can I sell my iphone 3g 16gb for around 300? If so what do I do? Ebay? Delete everything?

Just do a restore in itunes, and take your sim card out before you sell it. You can prob get more than that. The 2g 8gb models are still going for 200+ on craigslist.

Ok so this thread is huge, and I'm going to start looking through it for an answer, but I need to know what the best case is for the iphone in terms of durability, form factor, and the ability to access all ports (especially the headphone jack) with ease.

And I trust GAF more than random as blogs with this sort of thing -_-

I love the Vaja cases but they are pricey.

They look awesome though and now that everyone has an iPhone I like having a case that differentiates my phone.

Can someone give me some ideas as to what I should do?

I have an unlocked 8gb that I want to sell. It uses turbosim. Now, if I do a restore to get rid of my itunes account on it, won't it lock itself out after the restore?

God, what an embarrassment for Wired and Brian X. Chen. The guy finds out he's being misquoted by the reporter...and he reads the story on his iPhone! :lol

I have to thank Brian X. Chen for helping me diet; just before I had a late night desert in Roppongi, I used my iPhone to check what's hot in the Twitter-sphere using an app called Summizer.

One of the hottest topic read "Why Japanese hate ..."
I said "Hmmm. What could it be?" I opened the article (it has been edited since I first read it):

Why the Japanese Hate the iPhone

I found Brian's name and said to myself "Oh, I know this guy. I've got an email from him yesterday. He has already finished writing an article with my replies? Within less than 24 hours? wow, He's fast! "

I read on and found I was quoted for something I haven't told to Brian at all.
Here is how it read:

Hayashi's cellular weapon of choice? A Panasonic P905i, a fancy cellphone that
doubles as a 3-inch TV. It also features 3-G, GPS, a 5.1-megapixel camera and
motion sensors for Wii-style games.
"When I show this to visitors from the U.S, they're amazed," Hayashi told
Wired.com. "They think there's no way anybody would want an iPhone in Japan.
But that's only because I'm setting it up for them so that they can see the cool
features."

What P905i is my cellular weapon of choice?
I don't even charge it these days!!

This P905i is the phone from late 2007. Almost all Japanese manufacturers make two generations of phones in ONE year which means this phone is more than 2 generation old; and I don't even bother to use P905i. The latest from Panasonic is P01-A which has a gimmick that can WOW you all called 2 WAY-key. You want believe your eye, if you see it. But that's not my point.

My cellular weapon of choice, of course is an iPhone and my cellular weapon of choice to the foreigners is INFOBAR2 and I don't even dare to charge my P905i these days.

http://blog.nobi.cc/2009/02/my-view-of-how-iphone-is-doing-in-japan-by-nobi-nobuyuki-hayashi.html

Seems like the reporter has been in contact with Nobi for some time now, and the comments are closed, but the story is still up with the old quote still in place.

damn man, youre still using turbosim? wait 2g or 3g? i forget about the 2g now, but i think the steps for both are the same. you basically want to restore to the newest firmware then just use the appropriate program to activate and unlock the phone for the next user. really easy

What Yousef Raffah did. He went to the Mobily store in Jeddah where he asked about the new bundles, they told him that they are available. But then they told him that he cannot get any of those bundles because they are “VIP” bundles. To become a VIP that is eligible for the new iPhone 3G bundles they told him he need to:
1) Be a Mobily subscriber for at least 10 months.
2) His number was not disconnected in the last 10 months.
3) An average monthly bill of 800SR ($212).

Yousef had the first 2 requirements but not the third, so he was not eligible for the new iPhone 3G bundles! It didn’t matter to them that he was a Mobily subscriber for 4 years! An interesting quote from one of the employees to him was “نحن لا نريد أن يحصل كل من هب و دب على آيفون” which means “we do not want just anyone to have an iPhone!”.
iPhone 3G is only for VIPs in Saudi Arabia

Wow that's really bad!

Yeah, tech reporters love playing up how insular the Japanese market is, because it makes other tech companies feel better when they can't market their products there for shit. For Apple to not be immune from this forced reporting trend is expected. Nor is it unexpected that Wired won't remove the story.

My iphone has the "Light coming from the edges of the case - screen is not sealed properly" defect. I have just noticed a fair amount of dust under the screen too.

The limited warranty is has a few months left before it expires... Should I return it for a refurb?

That is a no brainer. You get a new one year warranty when you exchange it. There are no repairs on the iPhone and as long as you back up your phone you don't lose anything.

Go for it.

3g. The guy who unlocked it made it to be used with Turbosim. It was done in Aug. Sorry, I'm real unfamiliar about this. What steps do I need to take to erase my stuff from the phone without getting it lock itself after a restore?

I've googled around, but short of a screen replacement, is there a good way to fill in or repair scratches? I have a pretty gnarly scratch on my 3G's screen and it's really bothering me...

I've had the first-gen iPhone since launch and have yet to scratch it (relegated to music duty now). I've had my 3G for like a month and already it's gouged. Gr.

Wait, fuck my ass. Is there anyway I can get defucked on the amount of money I'm spending each month to pay for my iPhone because I got it last September? :(

Kindle App coming to the App Store from Amazon

now, iphone users can buy the same books and magazines as Kindle owners.

If this makes it to the canadian store, I think I'll bite. the ability to get new books from the store sounds great.

It's out now.

My reasons for hating the iPhone are these and they have been changing mildly over time. The sad thing is that it could be an amazing phone here! It's only mediocre at best, though.

Emoji doesn't work.
Emoji only works with Softbank users.

I just got a group email today and emjoi popped up! Holy shit, this is one thing finally fixed. Smilies are a big thing here. Women send them all the damn time and that can be up to 50% of an email you get. Not having anything but black bars was annoying. For a while they would destroy the Japanese font encoding from AU email addresses. I just had a friend send me a shit ton of emoticons and I could see theirs and they could see mine so for a while this seems to be adequately handled.
Finalfuckingly.

No audible alert when you get an email.
I get a little visual pop-up message telling that "You got a new mail." but no sound at all. I have to look at my phone to know if I got a mail. Now, this may not see like a big deal to anyone, but when you are somewhere where the culture is mailing over calling, it is. You can argue all day about how this is stupid, but it is what it is. The fact that when someone wants to get ahold of me that I have to actually look at my cellphone, activate it to see if I have an email is asinine. And the fact that there has been a Jailbreak hack to let us do this means that it is goddamned possible. I don't care if it lets me pick my own alert sound, but I should be able to get a damned beep and vibration when I receive an email like every other goddamned cellphone in this country.

Email is treated like a computer email.
And why is this a problem? Because so many people get spam to their cellphone email addresses, they block everyone but the main carriers. The iPhone is on one of the main carriers, but the address is i.softbank.jp for some reason and gets blocked by the computer filters of other cellphones until you add the email to a white list.

No access to Japanese cellphone sites.
I bought a Street Fighter 4 arcade rank card. The stuff is supposed to be managed online at sf4.jp. This site is blocked for computers. The iPhone counts as a computer. Capcom's site says you need a cellphone on the 3 major carriers that is not the iPhone to get access to the site.

I don't know what the solutions are, but there really should be a Softbank Config.app that has special features for using the iPhone on Japan.

I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about with cellphone email, as I never get any spam to my email, but there is a sound that comes when you get a new email..

I had this argument when I first got the phone.

When you are in the Mail application and it pulls down an email, you get a sound. This is pointless, you are already in the mail application.

If you have it set to push, it probably makes a little beep. This is pointless as the email supplied by Softbank is not push.

If you have it set to fetch, you do not get alerted the instant you get the email. This is important because someone emailed me now, not fifteen minutes from now when it decided to fetch the email.

I get a notice the exact instant that an email is sent to my phone. But it is silent. This is retarded.

Edit: This is what someone in Japan gets on their cellphone when an email is sent. This is before the actual email is pulled down to the cellphone from the servers. This is telling you that there is a message for you to pull down.
iwat.JPG

What I, and anyone in Japan with an iPhone or the thought of getting one, wants is for a sound, preferably one of your choice, to play when this happens. Vibration too.

Just a question - how DOES the iPhone receive mail, if it's not pushed to it?
edit: Oh read the post without the huge picture distracting.

I think you have discovered that the iPhone is primarily made for the American market. This is to be expected really.

It just annoys me that they decided to release this thing here without making the slight changes they should have at first. Only now are emoji working right.
Not being able to access the Street Fighter 4 site really isn't that big of a deal. Not having sound alerts, which is something that is technically feasible, is just them ignoring the problem.

I just wish Apple never released the damn thing in this country.

Can't you setup your email to push your emails to say that Push Gmail service or Mobile Me, that way your other Non-Softbank email will get the Ping and download it?

I'd assume someone else would have thought to do this but I never came across anything in my searches. Point is, I shouldn't have to.
Every day I'm so close to jailbreaking this thing just to have basic functionality, but I can't bring myself to do something as stupid as putting custom firmware on my cellphone.

I mean that's just it - I realise the sound thing IS a big deal (I know how email is the default system in Japan for mobiles), so it may be destined to fail. But there's nothing you can do about it. They will either fix it or not - and if they did, it would actually be surprising.

American companies tend not to pander to other territories, and Apple even more so. Somewhat. Actually, maybe I take that back - when they released the iPhone 3G, they made huge strides in becoming international. But Japan is just one country.

I remember when they ignore the new daylight savings time for NZ, resulting in all mac users to have their clock out by 1 hour for a few weeks. They fixed it after daylight savings time ended. THAT was a simple fix.

Right, you shouldn't have to do it, but it might be a decent work around rather than jail breaking.

Well, it's just annoying to see stuff like "Japan must hate foreign products." because you'd have to be deaf, dumb and blind to believe that. It's just Apple said "Here, you'll buy this because we tell you to."

I realize the importance of a cell phone in Japan, I've been living here a hell of a lot longer than you and I use mine for contacting clients and for business as well as for social stuff.

If browsing SFIV websites and emoji is at the top of your list in terms of cell phone importance than I doubt your cell phone is any more important to you than anyone else's.

just restore it to its newest firmware, download the newest quickpwn from http://www.quickpwn.com/ and follow instructions to jailbreak and unlock. done.

also, about the mail beeping...doesnt sound like apples problem. you said it yourself, it beeps when you set it to push, fact. its not apples fault whatever you are using doesnt support push. i get a sound no matter what my phone is set on, and its as soon as i get it in gmail, so...i dont know what the problem is.

Slightly off topic, but do other Japanese iPhone users think they're getting ripped off by Softbank via 'packets'?

Previously, I was on Docomo. I made a few calls, sent a few emails and my bill was around 6000yen-8000yen a month.

Now, I'm on Softbank. I make a few calls, send a few emails and my bill is around 15000yen! Pretty much double. A large chunk of this comes packets usage; my last bill showing 16,389yen worth of data trasnfer, but as I'm on the unlimited tariff, this maxes out at 5700yen.

So the question is, where the hell does 16,389yens worth of data transfer coming from? I don't browse the web, check google maps, use apps or send/receive photos... all I do is email approx 100 text-only mails a month. Do the really cost 160yen each? Of course not. What on earth is going on? I've only been with Softbank for 3 months and I'm going to dispute my next bill.

What are you actually being charged for, then? Are you on the White Plan or Double White? If you're on the White Plan, remember you are ¥20 for 30 seconds.

RevenantKioku said:

-White plan is 5120yen
-Call charges are 934yen
-Packets are 5700yen
-'iphone charge' is 3360yen
-and then a bunch of other, smaller charges for various options.

Which is all fine, apart from the packet charge... I barely send/receive anything.

White is 5120? WTF? I'm going to have to look at my shit (Never have.) But white should be ¥990 or something like that and double white is ¥1980 or whatever.

Sorry, made an error when posting, the 5120 is the plan + call charges themselves. The 934 is listed on my bill as 'white'... not particularly descriptive.

Is Save Benjis the best iphone price comparision app? I'm looking for a price checker.

I want to enter a product's name or barcode and get price comparisons from different places.

Marvelharvey. Pakehoudai per packet rates are calculated a maximum. Basically, it is rigged to get you to above the 5700 yen threshold quickly.

BTW - I call and surf much more than you do and I only pay 11000 yen a month. Essentially, you are calling people that aren't on softbank too much.

Are we back to this topic again too?

RK why don't you just ditch the iPhone and get something suits your needs more fully. It's been months since we had that first conversation.

Just had to come in and cheer for the Kindle app. Slightly disappointing that you can't browse Amazon's Kindle library from within the app (or even from Amazon's native Store app) and have to go through the browser to buy.

How do I jailbreak my phone? Version 2.2

Do I upgrade to 2.2.1 and follow this website?

"But If you don't want to unlock your iPhone 3G
now or anytime in the future and only want to jailbreak it to install jailbreak iPhone apps then you can update your iPhone 3G with firmware 2.2.1 using iTunes and then use QuickPwn 2.2.5-2 to jailbreak it."

Oh, and very important... if I fuck it up, can it be reset using itunes?

Same way that you originally bought it, just click the download button in iTunes. It'll say some kinda prompt like "since you already purchased this app, it's free to redownload" and then it'll begin.
