So I jailbroke to get firmware 3.0 beta 3, then went back to 2.2.1 cause it was a bit laggy and the few bugs were bothering me. Has anyone installed firware 3.0 beta 4 yet? Just wondering if it's worth trying again or are there still quite a few lags / bugs. I noticed contact list would load quite slowly on beta 3, my albums on the iPod would repeat after the "Z" sort, they would show up again under the "123" section. A few other annoyances.

For reals. I was at the Cubs game at Wrigley Field yesterday and I was trying to check out my fantasy team and watch some replays from the game and...nothing. It said I had 5 bars of 3G coverage but no internet functions would load up. Att's network is so shitty when there's a bunch of people in one place.

I was trying to use my iPhone in the MGM Grand arena during Pacquiao-Hatton, but no signal despite the five bars + 3G logo.

Thank god my brother (a member of the boxing press) gave me the press WiFi password. :lol

True, but is it like that for every carrier? Just asking. 98% of the time I have no problem with my iPhone, but at times when at a stadium or with a ton of people pulling on a signal, my internet does get effected. But not my voice.

My friend was pulling data no problem on his Storm on Verizon.

If this was the only complaint against ATT I wouldn't mind, but the dropped calls, lack of consistent 3G coverage (in downtown Chicago FFS) and the miraculous voicemails all add up to me hoping the Verizon rumors are true.

I've had this happen in various places too. I've found it sometimes can be fixed by going into settings and turning off 3G, then turning it back on again 20 seconds later or so. The phone (or at least mine) seems to forget it's connected to anything now and again.

I have found that when this happens its best to simply turn the phone off and on again. It seems that some networks that the phone roams data on don't cooperate and you have to restart the phone in order to get them to sync. This mostly happens to me when I forget to turn off my phone when its sitting in luggage and I fly to another state.

anyone?

Jailbreak iphone question

on the hack site it says: (Please ensure that you have upgraded iTunes to iTunes 8.0.2)
and should have 2.2.1 firmware on the iPhone.

Now I just updated iTunes to the NEW version 8.1.1.10.......I had 8.0.2 before and I jailbreaked my iPhone back then..now I want to help out my friend to jailbreak her iPhone but I just updated iTunes to 8.1.1.10 but she still has the 2.2.1 Firmware on her iPhone

does this matter??
is it still good to jailbreak it? or will the iPhone stop working?

That's the way I used to think but I had Verizon and they would charge you to get a new phone even if you wanted to buy a phone and re-up your contract. They basically turned down money from me on a few occasions. I'm glad to hear AT&T isn't as stupid.

I don't follow. Forgive my ignorance and elaborate please.

The original iPhone wasn't subsidized by AT&T, so they had no reason to deny previous iPhone users an upgrade (at the new price).

Now that the 3G is subsidized by carriers, there's a chance it could follow normal hardware upgrade procedures. I don't know what it is for AT&T, but up here in Canada with Rogers, you have no ability to do a hardware upgrade (well, aside from paying the full price for the phone) before 1 year is up on your contract, and even then you might be paying a little more than a standard new customer.

edit: wow, forgot there was another page left. :lol Anyway, there's the info repeated.

I finally gave in and I am getting an iPhone 3G - 8 GB even though I have fork $200 to cancel my account with TMobile who received to prorate my termination fee because I renewed my contract in April, 2 months before the termination rules. Anyway I am looking forward to using my iphone:D

The new one is getting announced in a couple months dude.

If it's not too late you should at least wait till then.

Not even that long at this point. Probably a month until the announcement, at WWDC, and new phone in late June most likely, if they stay on their established schedule.

Going from a 2.0MP to a 3.2MP (or whatever it's going to be) isn't important to everybody.

LOL I know there are probably going to be other hardware changes, but the current 3G phone is such a bargain at $99 (8GB refurb) to pass up. You know the new iPhone is going to be at least 199. It's a great time to get a 3G, such an awesome device. I probably wouldn't wait at this point either.

That's what I did, and the refurb unit is as good as new - no scratches, no defects and with the same warranty (though sans dock).

By new phone, are you guys referring to the same principles with a few new bells & whistles or an all new, more powerful device with an OS that takes advantage of said increased power and that will be the flagship/standard moving forward?

A little from column A, a little from column B.

No one knows. That's why people should wait.

But if one really has to have it now, at least spare everyone the awful "god I just bought one!" horseshit the Internet deals with regarding every Apple update. Everyone should know better.

wait, did I read this right? You paid 200 bucks to cancel your contract early (by 2 months) to get an iPhone now?

when the new iPhone is expected to be shown in around.... 2 months.

it's not a huge deal since the current iPhone is still great but... I hope you don't kick yourself when the new one comes out around one month after you would've fulfilled your T-Mobile contract.

One thing that is a pretty safe bet is an update to the network hardware. People may not see this one initially in a big preso, but I would be surprised if they didn't do multiband wifi and some upgrade to the internal modem to support some of the hardware efficiencies gained with AT&Ts new network upgrades and better support for tethering over those interfaces. Currently I'm traveling up I-65 at about 80MPH and browsing GAF and other things over the 3G network (when its available).

I like hotmail, I have been using for almost 10 years now.

You like dealing with MS idiocy with browser support and taking time to "make" their versions compatible with the newest versions of browsers? You like just RECENTLY getting POP!? access? You LIKE not being able to forward your mail out to any non-live e-mail address?

Ability to search email and iPod in the next update please. Search for SMS and photo would be nice but not as necessary. Email search is absolutely essential and I'm surprised it isn't already there.

It would be nice if pressing the home button when you are on the main screen not only took you to the first page but also the last page of your applications if you press it again when you are on the first page... I didn't describe that well :\ press once takes you to the first page, press again when on the first page and it takes you to the last page of the home screen. Save time on scrolling through every page to find what you want.

Also, the ability to turn off the second ring when you get an SMS and don't respond to it right away. Please?

Search has already been announced for 3.0

The home button functionality you are describing won't happen (at least, not in the next update) because in 3.0 pressing the home button on the first page does something else.

You already have the ability to turn off the 2nd/3rd SMS alerts.

This waiting thing sucks. My wife is eligible for an iPhone upgrade on May 22 and she's really looking forward to it. Her current Blackberry Pearl is a piece of crap and is on the fritz.

I'm not sure I can convince her to wait on a phantom date for a supposed announcement that gives a future release date. I'm used to stuff like that, but she's not. She asks

-"is a new one coming out?"
-"everyone seems to think so"
-"when?"
-"I don't know"
-"what are the new features"
-"I don't know"
-"when will we know what the new features are?"
-"I don't know"

See, she might not even care once the features are announced. New camera, more storage space? That's all meh for her. But I'm being a little selfish here in that I'd love to wait for the new features to get announced, buy it for her, and then I get to play around with it until I upgrade my 8GB 3G next year.

If this was Microsoft, we'd know just about everything by now. :\

You can tell her June 8.

^I dunno who confirmed a new iphone?

Also we need a back button. For example: Email link opens Safari, you are done with that page but still want to go back to your email account, then there's not much you can do other than hit home and start again

Well it's to quiet her down. All signs point to WWDC, so might as well.

Spotlight search is in 3.0. A search field has also been added to every single Apple app.

Hitting the home button again goes to Spotlight search.

You can disable the multiple text notifications.

You really never read about all of this months ago? It's not even like it's obscure news. Apple had an event, every tech site in the world reported on it, and GAF talked about it in like three different threads for weeks.

Planning on getting an Iphone here soon. My brother gets a 50% employee discount on the service plan so Ill be signing up under him :D

So a new model will be announced in about a month? Guess I can wait, anyone think its going 4G?

It won't have a 4G network to run on in the US so it would be pretty pointless.

Eh. It's more of a "Well, it's how Apple works. In June." and less of "Everyone just thinks it might happen sometime soon but who knows when."

I don't see the harm in her getting the 3G if she is fine with it and doesn't want to wait the two weeks after May 22nd to see what's going on.

There is no way they'd be able to keep that under wraps. If AT&T had a 4G network anywhere close to being up and running for the summer, we would have known about it months ago.

Nope. I don't really have time to read up on everything. That's more than I was asking for... can't wait!

Is disabling multiple text notifications in 3.0 or is that something I can do now? The poster I initially quoted said it was already available...?

Yeah, I'm very interested in how to turn off the follow-up SMS alerts as well. Annoying as hell and google is being stubborn.

EDI: Oh nuts, it looks like this might be a 3.0-only feature?

Not entirely true (though valid for our purposes), as Sprint does have a bonafide 4G network. Just not a lot of places you can use it :)

It is entirely true when I based that statement off the fact that we KNOW Apple isn't going to release a CDMA iPhone here :D

Sprint's 4G implementation is WiMax and not tied to CDMA :D Check and mate!

Heads up that Beta 5 is out (and a new iTunes that I 'm sure you'll need to install before syncing again).

I don't have enough awakeness in me to handle it right now.

Oh, and big news, GAF! I just submitted my first iPhone app for approval. Can't wait to see how painful a process that's going to be. All I can say about the app for now is....
that it's going to be free!
