I demand someone makes PhotoSwap without reporting.

I hope to hell Apple beefs up the battery life of any possible iPhone replacement. I'm looking to upgrade my ooooold G1 iPhone and I'm looking at Android phones in addition to whatever Apple has planned.

If I can get away from AT&T I'd love to. So I'm also hoping the rumors of Apple making other wireless devices for other carriers are true.

AT&T fewer bars in more places.™

Do you live in a 3G area? 3G really kills the battery on the iPhone and pretty much all smartphones. For some reason 3rd party apps really use a lot more battery than the stuff that comes with the iPhone too.

I am pretty satisfied with the battery of the iPhone though all things considered. But if I know I am going to be using it more than 4 hours in a day I definitely take a car charger with me.

Heads up that Beta 5 is out (and a new iTunes that I 'm sure you'll need to install before syncing again).

I don't have enough awakeness in me to handle it right now.

Oh, and big news, GAF! I just submitted my first iPhone app for approval. Can't wait to see how painful a process that's going to be. All I can say about the app for now is....
that it's going to be free!

Holy fuck only 1 week and a new beta?? LOL

Hmm, is there anywhere that sells standalone versions of those new iPod Shuffle remotes (as in, I can plug my headphones into them), and if so, will they work with an iPhone/Touch while the display's locked?

Sorry about the hijack, but this is the closest related thread...

Ibeleive the volume controls do not work on an iPhone, but the play/pause does. Not sure about the touch.

Apple just sent out an email stating that all Apps from this day forward need to be iPhone OS 3.0 compliant or they will not be allowed on the AppStore. Shouldn't be too long now...

What they should really do is have a "PG13" and "unrated" server, or something like that, with warnings for the latter.

Does anyone still use coverflow? I remember that being one of THE features that really sold me on this phone, but now it's just gimmicky. The list view is so much quicker for finding individual songs or artists. I only ever use coverflow to show the iphone off to friends. I don't use coverflow on Itunes either. Nothing against coverflow, it's neat, it's just inefficient imo compared to the list view.

Yeah, I'm with you. I hardly ever use it.

There are times when I don't know what I want to listen to, so I might use coverflow to browse for something as it's more visual than artist view.

but, really, it's an "oooh shiny" thing and it definitely isn't meant to be efficient

Yeah I never use it for practical purposes. Now and again when I'm on the shitter I'll use cover flow and marvel at all my cool albums. But that's about it.

I rarely know what I want to listen to, so I use it to browse my collection until I decide on something.

For sure, it's novelty. But I think it could be helped if you could somewhat arrange the order, like when you go into coverflow, it was whatever you were viewing before, not just automatically "Album by artist".

Oddly timed given the recent "I jumped in the pool" discussion, but Apple has revised its "wet iPhone" policy:

Regardless of the reason, Apple previously hadn't been too understanding about water damage to the devices. The company used to require you to buy a new phone and start a new contract, putting a real damper on the whole iPhone-owning experience.

Now, though, the company's changing its tune. Got your phone a little too damp? Don't sweat it, Apple says. Just call your local Apple Store, make an appointment with the Genius Bar, and go in to get a discounted replacement.

The deal, as explained to me by an Apple Store representative: You shell out $199, get a model of the same generation, and avoid having to sign up for a new contract. The phone could be new or refurbished -- but, unlike your current one, it'll work. And, unlike with the policies of the past, you won't be signing your cellular life away for another two years.

I just bought an 8 Gig 3g on May 1st. ATT has a 30 day refund policy, and I'm thinking about taking the phone back now since I heard the new one should be coming out in a month or less. What do you guys think? I know there is a 20% restocking fee, but I think it's better to do it now while I still can and get the latest and greatest. Thoughts? I know, I should have done research first. But Also, the new one may not be able to be jailbroken, which would obviously be a bummer...

you'll feel pretty silly in two years if you decide to keep it.

It's likely to be announced at the WWDC in a month with a release some time in late June. But, nothing is confirmed yet.

Keep or take back?

Well here's the thing, the new iPhone will most likely have a slightly better camera and the new models MAY come with more space. They will however probably be slightly more expensive than the current models. Since you purchased an 8GB model I assume space isn't a big deal for you.

So option 1: you pay ATT 20% of $200 ($40), and probably more than $199 for the newer model, or option 2: keep the iPhone, get the free 3.0 update and pay nothing more.

I'd go with option 2. Unless you really want that 3.2 MP camera.

I heard it may have a magnetometer as well, which would be swell....

It may not be able to be jailbroken the day it comes out but it will pretty quickly. People care about that stuff and work fast to get it going.

Weird... I just got back to Japan from the U.S. yesterday, and now my Japanese iPhone is either roaming or otherwise inside a network called "UMA 3G." The Softbank people can't tell me why, and I reset the phone and reinstalled it. The phone did join T-Mobile's network in the U.S. very briefly when I was in the U.S., but I never made calls with it or anything.

I have no clue for this sort of thing. But did you ever sync it? How long were you in the states? There're carrier updates that iTunes will down load...

When is the new Iphone revision supposed to come out? Today I saw Samsung 8300, and after seeing how much its OLED screen shames the one on my itouch, I decided to definitely hold on iphone purchase before they get out the model with such screen. Its funny though how much Samsung interface sucks in comparison. Everything feels clunky and unresponsive.

Maybe June. That is when they're going to release the iPhone 3.0 software, likely to coincide with an iPhone update. In my opinion.

Funny how a shitty UI is trumped by a better screen. I know everyone's different but I place a much higher importance on how responsive a device is than how bright the colors are.

anyway, OLED from Apple seems unlikely for this year.

*Ding Ding Ding.* It's Rumor time! come and get some.

As always, rumors at this stage are to be taken with a grain of salt but I figure i'd post this anyway.

Possible iPhone specs leaked from Chinese forum:

http://www.macrumors.com/2009/05/11/chinese-forum-poster-claims-next-generation-iphone-details/

We've been keeping an eye on some reports coming out of Chinese forum Weiphone over the past couple of weeks, and it appears the reports are starting to spread. In early May, a forum poster from the Chinese site posted specs and a screenshot from what is claimed to be the next generation iPhone.

The image above was uploaded and seems to depict a new iPhone model number "MB717LL" with 32GB of Storage. If the original poster's claims are to be believed, the new iPhone will contain the following features:

- 600MHz CPU Speed (up from 400MHz)
- 256MB RAM (up from 128MB)
- Digital Compass and FM
- 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus
- 32GB size
- No major changes in battery, screen and external casing
.

The combination of the 3G features plus more RAM (less crashes, yay) compass, better camera, etc might make it an easy choice for 1st gen owners to upgrade but I don't think it's a sure fire upgrade for 3G owners at this point.

I'm sure we'll find out how accurate this rumor is by WWDC in June.

If its upping CPU and RAM, video is a 'conceptual lock' (note, I am not saying that its in the 7A312g firmware or anything). Digital compass is one of those features that's been known about for a while. FM is a bit weird and I remain skeptical of this one. 32GB size is pretty obvious as well since Apple has been eating up memory in capacities to make volume 32GB affordable for some time now.

Not sure what to make of AT&T3.5 - though that would suggest that it is ready for the new network rollout that AT&T is currently doing. No idea how they'd access that from China though since AT&T doesn't have a terrestrial network there.

the only problem I have with iPhone 3G is the battery time. if you have the setting for how bright the screen should be anywhere nere the middle or above you have to charge the phone everyday :(

I really want a 32GB model but between that and more RAM, I can't fathom how they could possibly keep it at $300. If it is $300, yeah, day one, I need the storage space, but man, that seems unlikely.

Yes, me too. That's why I did not buy Samsung 8300 and decided to wait for next Iphone. But the screen is really like a night and day. Black emits no light from what I could tell. Colors are ridiculously vibrant. If I got Iphone today and they came out with a model with OLED screen in a month or two I'd kick myself in the butt over that, especially considering that due to my situation I'd have to spend small fortune to buy an unlocked Iphone. I like to play games on Ipod Touch and those would benefit from that screen.

As for if its such screen will come out this year, I would hope it would as Apple likes to be on the edge of screen tech for their products, and they have some contract in place with LG for new screens, rumor has it OLED screens. Even if not, a 600MHz speed bump would be worth the wait for me - as it would let me play Pinball Dreams at 60FPS in vertical mode! Whatever it is, I'll get the next hardware update. If it doesn't have OLED, I'm not gonna wait one more year for it...

I'd be very suprised to see an OLED iPhone this time around. The tech is still way too expensive, from what I last saw, and Apple has enough sales data to know that cheap iPhones with subsidization discounts thrown on top of that lure a lot of buyers.

Has anybody picked up Peggle yet? I'd like to hear some user impressions. Also, what's the file size on it? I'm nowhere near wifi until I get home and I hate buying an app only to be told that I can't download it because its too big for 3g.

edit:

Ok, it's 10.2MB, does that mean I won't be able to download over 3g? I think the limit is 10MB.

I bought Peggle and really like it. It runs well and looks good, and the controls are spot on. There's even a dial to the right side of the screen so you can fine tune your shots. It's definitely better than the DS version in terms of visuals, sounds, and controls.

Possibly, but the 8300 I mentioned above is not *that* expensive, Certainly cheaper than an Ihone and has 2.8" oled screen and 8MP camera.
