Why is it that even though the Iphone has a native youtube app, 90% of the vids I click on when viewing GAF say "This movie is not supported on the Iphone"? is it because people are linking to the HD videos?

I have the same issues. Maybe not 90% but far too often. Hopefully 3.0 will have a youtube update.

Not everything has been converted to h.264 format to play on the iPhone. Plenty of YouTube content is still in Flash I believe.

There are some things in there that would lead me to believe this isn't real. FM Transmitter, OLED screen and Turn-by-Turn to name a few. Love to be wrong though.

Yeah. OLED is pretty expensive--keeping it at the same price with all the other additions is iffy. So I'd take it with a grain of salt.

Exactly what I was thinking. I'd love to see an OLED screen, I just think it's a few versions off yet.

Finally! I've waited and waited for them to make the Apple logo glow!! :lol :lol

the bluetooth chip that the next iphone will have includes FM transmission and reception, however it hasn't been confirmed that the hardware will in fact be used for those purposes

but this is fake because it says rubber tread backing. it's matte aluminum. it's like they took that leaked picture, took what they could from it and added a wishlist to it.

Quick question, guys -- I got an iPhone 3G a month and a half or so ago, and I've been using the little plastic screen protectors, but I've seen in this thread some people say off and on that they're unnecessary. I'd really like to get rid of them if that's true, but I'm paranoid about messing up the screen, so any feedback you can give me would be very much appreciated.

Also, no, I couldn't wait until the new model, but I'll likely pass this one onto my dad since he's been wanting one if the Wired specs are legit. Who could say no to a glowing logo and OLED?

Double the ram and processing speed.

I would hope that fixes a lot of slowdown and crashes in complex apps.

Those are definitely amongst most predictions/rumors for the upgrade, and I agree, it would be nice.

Something about those two things doesn't sound right

There's a version of Photoshop for the iPhone? And you're basing your interest in the phone on whether or not it runs well? Because if it doesn't you'll buy what other photoshop-running phone?

No I'll buy a phone that interests me a lot more than the iPhone does. But having Photoshop everywhere I go is a bigger priority.

Are you trolling? What good would Photoshop be on a low-res touchscreen display with a slow processor?

New version has a better processor. And I'm not going to use it to edit normal photoshops I have, just creating new ones. And I'm not trolling, stop defending your fucking phone.

There's an iPhone app called LogMeIn. It's a paid app but the service is free which lets you remotely connect to any computer you want to set it up with. That computer can have Photoshop running and give you full photoshop access (remotely) right from your iphone. I swear by LogMeIn, it makes the phone a full computer. You can even use it to check flash sites if you want.

Yeah, a new 700mhz ARM chip isn't going to help you much. Pentium III's can handle more than it can. Do you edit much on those?

I don't even have a fucking iPhone by the way.

What is wrong with you. I bought this photoshop magazine last week, and it mentioned a photoshop for iPhone. So here I am, asking if it's any good. I don't know if you've had a rough day, but take you social problems out of here.

Buy a different phone and move on then. I don't think there is a phone that will fit your needs in this department, and you're clearly not interested in the iPhone itself.

Well my apologies if I came off as rough, but it just seemed so ridiculous. Here's the skinny:

There's no Photoshop on the iPhone. Hypothetically speaking, if there was Photoshop, the processor is not powerful enough to make it useful, RAM is very limited as well (256 total), the small and low-resolution touch screen wouldn't make it practical either as its not as accurate as one usually wants to be in Photoshop, and the battery would be chewed in minutes.

If you really need Photoshop on the go, invest in a netbook.

Not every video on Youtube, especially not the really obscure ones GAF would be linking to, ever get encoded to H.264 by Google. Unless they were originally uploaded in that format, I imagine that explains it.

I'd be pretty surprised by OLED. Would definitely dramatically improve battery life / keep up with competition on premium screen quality. Resolution is definitely going to have to stay the same until the SDK is packed with something to deal with multiple resolutions and app makers have lead time to adjust.

Rubber tread backing makes total sense. A new iPhone is a slippery iPhone. 2 years later the thing slips out of my slacks pocket now and then. I wouldn't mind seeing the chrome rim retired as well. It's as dated as the pinstripe backdrop

He asked if you were trolling because Photoshop on iPhone is ridiculous. He didn't mean it to be pissy, but apparently you took that as a cue to start the pissing but blame it on him for being a defense force you've imagined.

I'd be shocked by an OLED screen.

shocked, but quite happy.

I feel it would be a good move for Apple to start pushing the hardware a bit more on the new phone. they played it safe with the 3G model upgrade and I'd like to see them push a bit harder on this revision, to keep up with the competition.

I just can't fathom this as being true at all. Some things seem reasonable, knowing what has leaked, and what we know is coming from 3.0. Some other things just seem like iPhone fans' wishlist compilations. Some things really stick out as totally off-the-mark though:

The metal band around the device is one of the antennas. It's an elegant, functional design. I don't see that going away. Why would it?

Nor can I see a rubber tread backing. That goes against everything we've seen in every iPod design ever. Ive likes something that slides in and out of a pocket or pouch with ease, and with as little possibility of snagging anything as possible. I doubt he's changed his mind on a central design philosophy for his devices. Besides, if you want a rubber tread backing there's a shitload of cases available that'll give you something similar. Besides, "sleeker design" and "rubber tread backing" seem like contradictory bullet points to me.

Built-in FM transmitter. Oh, man...here we go again. We've only been hearing this old shit trotted out since the first iPod. Obviously by now, it's pretty safe to assume that Steve Jobs thinks FM circuitry is a big waste of space in his machines.

I thought maybe we might see an OLED screen soon, but I think this is too soon. Apple would love an OLED screen in the device (and in their laptops, too) and has already made a (widely rumored/leaked) deal with LG, apparently to do so, as it would really help boost battery life, but I can't see it happening this soon. I think the first LG OLED screen will probably appear in the next premium refresh of the MacBook Air.

They changed the back of the iPhone 3G to plastic because the metal killed the reception. (iirc)

The latest iPod touch has an FM receiver. (although it isn't used, it's just part of the wifi chip)

OLED is used in a lot of mobile devices already. 13" is WAY too expensive for OLED.

I'm not even sure how much of this is more than logical reasoning.

* 32GB and 16GB storage (up from the current 16GB and 8GB models)
- We know the capacity is going to keep increasing for the various model years.

* $199 and $299 price points to be maintained
- Apple has always been a big standardized pricing company.

* 3.2-megapixel camera (up from the current 2-megapixel camera)
- Everyone has been saying this and we know they've been buying them up

* Video-recording and editing capabilities
- ...

* Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
- We know this is something that would logically come from the Messages app on the phone

* Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
- We've seen lots of grabs that show a more 'unibody' iPhone shell and this would definitely make them cheaper to make - though not as good to look at.

* OLED screen
- Its possible to do since everyone and their mother is moving to OLED, so this seems to be more deduction than actual evidence

* 1.5 times the battery life of the current models
- The logical flow from having an OLED screen a different case and more room for battery

* Double the RAM and processing power
- If you're doing video you need more memory and CPU

* Built-in FM transmitter
- Have no idea why Apple would do this (assuming they mean receiver - an FM transmitter in the iPhone is pretty useless for most people), this continues to make no sense unless its a chip that's coming along for the ride with some other chips they're putting in the phone.

* Apple logo on back will glow
- Both wasteful of battery and lame, though it would help the logo stand out since they are getting rid of chrome

* Rubber-tread backing
- The case that people keep saying is the new case suggests this but I remain unconvinced

* Sleeker design
- If by sleeker you mean thinner

* Built-in compass
- Sure why not, the G1 has it so surely the iPhone would add it

* The camera, GPS, compass and Google map combined will identify photo and inform about photo locations
- They already do this

* Turn-by-turn directions
- ...

Its an interesting list, but I'm not sure this is anything more than speculation at this point based on an aggregation of every rumor that's out there.

OLED would also contribute to the increased battery life. I don't think it's too far-fetched. I just want Peggle to run at a solid framerate :lol

The "sleeker design" is kind of weird to me, just because it's basically a single slab. I don't know how you get much sleeker than it is now. But design is hardly their weak point, so I assume they'll come up with something cool.

wait, really? I never thought that ring was connected to anything internally. i thought all the antennas in the 1st gen were located in that bottom plastic stripe.

3G model, they could be anywhere, I guess.

I believed this about the screen as well, but its just not true. The screen on the 3G is in fact scratchable (unlike the 2G from what I've heard), although it holds up MUCH better than any other cell phone screen I've ever used.

I'm super carefull with my screen (well, as carefull as you can be when keeping the phone loose in your pocket; i.e. not keeping change or keys in the same pocket, always keeping the screen to the inside of the pocket etc), and I have a couple tiny scratches. They are barely noticable and really dont affect the phone at all right now, but I've only had the phone for 6 months. I am a bit worried what it will look like in 2 years though.

IMO, If you're picky about this sort of thing, keep a screen protector on it.

One thing I wonder about OLED - since there's no light emanating from black screen color at all, wouldn't that make finger smudges really badly visible on the black portions of the screen? On one hand, I don't like how much light Iphone emits from it's black screen surfaces, on the other hand, I'd probably like even less if I would be able to see screen smudges better.

It looks like my wife is picking up the 16GB this week. :(

I won't be able to try out the new iPhone until next April when my current contract expires.

The metal parts of the iPhone are various antenna. Evn the ring around the camera!

I'm no radio expert, but perhaps they don't need to be fully attached to focus signals.

Don't laugh. If the logo glowed or pulsed when you had new e-mail/voicemail/sms, etc. that would be a damn nice feature.

When its in my pocket? Not sure how that'd be useful. Lets face it, with the logo on the back of the phone - the chances of it REALLY having some useful UI is slim. It would require that you either put the screen face down or keep the logo in front of you all the time. Just doesn't make a lot of sense that it would have some meaningful use.

This is correct. I have a 2G and 3G before me. One obviously older than the other while being used as a test device after its services as my personal phone and the 3G which has only been my personal phone. The 2G has never had a scratch on it. The 3G had small scratches on it a few months after purchase. They aren't terribly noticeable, but they do illustrate that the 3G screen protection process is definitely inferior to the 2G's.

Why? Look at your Iphone's screen while it's off. The smudges are so much more visible than when the screen is on. The backlight really helps with this, and OLED screens have no backlight. It's a potential issue because due to the nature of the device Iphones screen is always completely covered in smudges.

that's a surprisingly good point. smudges are already bad enough with the backlight on. without the backlight, it would be really hard to see some spots

man, anti-glare screen sales would skyrocket with an OLED screen. :lol
